Quick answers — read this first
What are the beads on top of my candle? Fragrance oil. Not water, not condensation, not humidity. It is oil the wax could not hold in solution, migrating upward and collecting on the surface. Sweating is a solubility failure.

What causes it? In order of how often it is the answer: (1) a load above the wax's stated ceiling, (2) fragrance added at the wrong temperature so it dispersed instead of dissolving, (3) heat in storage or transit pushing oil back out, (4) a wax and oil pairing that simply does not hold well together.

What is my ceiling? It is set by the wax. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks: up to 13%. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464: up to 10%. These are wax-manufacturer formulation limits, not a universal rule.

Will it go away if I wipe it? No. Wiping removes the beads that have already surfaced. The surplus still in the wax will come back, and it will come back faster in an Indian summer than it did in December.
The short answer
What it is: fragrance oil that the wax is not holding. Wax dissolves oil the way water dissolves sugar — up to a stated limit, then no further. Past that limit the surplus never binds; it migrates to the surface and beads.
Check the load first: up to 13% on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, up to 10% on Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464. Weigh the oil, do not measure it by volume.
Then check the add temperature: Eco Soy CSI 400 specifies fragrance in at 80–90°C with two minutes of stirring; CSI 464 melts and pours in the same band. Added cool, oil is suspended rather than dissolved, and it will separate later even at a legal load.

Why is my candle sweating oil?
Because the wax is not holding the fragrance you put into it. Sweating is a solubility failure, not condensation. Wax dissolves fragrance oil up to a limit the wax manufacturer states, and past that limit the surplus stays as free oil, travels to the surface during cooling, cure and storage, and beads there. Four things cause it, in this order of frequency: a load above the stated ceiling — up to 13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and up to 10% for Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464; fragrance added at the wrong temperature, when Eco Soy CSI 400 specifies 80–90°C with two minutes of stirring; heat in storage or transit driving oil back out of a marginal recipe; and a wax and oil pairing that never held well together. Fix them in that order, using a scale and a thermometer rather than judgement, and confirm with the four-jar test below. Sweating is closely related to the other surface and structural faults in soy, and it is worth learning to tell them apart before you change the recipe.
One line: the beads are fragrance oil your wax could not dissolve — check the load against the wax's stated ceiling first, then the temperature at which you added the oil.

What sweating actually is

The wax is not perspiring. It is failing to dissolve something, and the something is the most expensive ingredient in the jar.

Pick the candle up and touch the surface. If your fingertip comes away oily and the residue smells of the fragrance you poured, you are looking at fragrance oil that came out of solution. That is the entire diagnosis in one sentence, and everything else on this page follows from it. The industry word for it is sweating, and the word is unhelpful because it invites the wrong mental model — moisture, humidity, a monsoon problem. It is none of those things.

The useful model is dissolution. Solid wax is a crystalline matrix and fragrance oil sits in the spaces between the crystals, of which there is a finite amount. Every wax has a quantity of oil it has been formulated to hold, stated by the manufacturer as a percentage. Below it the oil is bound — locked into the structure, invisible, released only as the wax melts under a flame. Above it the oil is free, and free oil is mobile: it moves through the setting wax toward the path of least resistance, which is the top surface and the gap between wax and glass, and pools there.

The condensation myth, and why it costs you money. Makers who believe sweating is humidity do three things that cannot work: they run a dehumidifier in the pouring room, they cure with the lids off "to let the moisture out", and they wipe the jars before dispatch. Wiping is the actively harmful one, because it removes the evidence at your end and lets the candle ship with the surplus still in it — the customer gets a clean candle that beads again a fortnight later, and a batch problem becomes a refund and a review. If the residue smells of your fragrance, it is your fragrance. Water does not smell of Sandalwood.

Sweating also sits in a family of related faults that people routinely confuse with each other, and the confusion leads to the wrong fix. Beading on top is oil. A rough, crystalline white bloom on the top or sides is frosting, which is the soy crystals themselves and is cosmetic. A dip or cavity under the surface is a sinkhole, which is a contraction problem, not a solubility one. Wet-looking patches against the glass with no smell are usually adhesion. If you are not certain which one you have, work through the full diagnostic for candle wax problems before you change a single variable — and note that fragrance load pushes on more than one of them at once, which is why oil load also changes frosting behaviour and why an over-loaded candle can tunnel as well.

A thirty-second confirmation
Take a clean white tissue and press it flat onto the beaded surface for five seconds. If it lifts away translucent and scented, it is fragrance oil and this page applies. If it lifts away damp, unscented and dries clear with no oily halo, look at your storage humidity and your jar sealing instead. Do this before you touch the recipe.

The four causes, ranked

Ranked by how often each one turns out to be the answer when a maker sends us a photograph of a beaded candle. Work down the list; do not skip to the interesting one at the bottom. Load above the ceiling — the commonest answer by a wide marginThe mechanism is capacity. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states up to 10%; Luxury Soy Wax Chunks state up to 13%. Pour CSI 464 at 12% because a forum said "soy takes 12%" and you have put 24 g of oil into a 200 g candle that can hold 20 g. The 4 g difference is not absorbed slowly over the cure; it is never absorbed at all. The evidence is arithmetic: open the batch sheet, take the actual weight of oil and the actual finished weight, and divide — do not trust the percentage you intended. Makers who dose by volume are frequently two or three points above where they think they are, because oils differ in density and a millilitre is not a gram. Drop to the ceiling and repour; the sweating batch is not recoverable, and remelting does not remove oil that is already in the jar.

Wrong temperature at addition — the one that survives a correct loadThis is the cause that confuses experienced makers, because their maths is right and the candle sweats anyway. Dissolving requires energy and contact time. Eco Soy CSI 400 specifies fragrance added at 80–90°C with two minutes of stirring, and CSI 464 melts and pours in the same band. Add at 65°C and the oil breaks into droplets and stays as droplets — dispersed, not dissolved. It looks identical in the pitcher. It behaves completely differently in the jar, because those droplets coalesce and rise as the wax sets. The tell is patchiness: the first jars poured are cleaner than the last, because the melt was in band at the start and out of it by the end. Full detail in the section below.

Heat in storage or transit — the trigger, not usually the causeHeat does not create surplus oil. It reveals a recipe that had no margin. A candle poured at 12% in CSI 464 in a Delhi December might hold together on a cool shelf for months and look like a success. The same candle in a warehouse in May, or in the back of a delivery vehicle parked in the sun, is warm enough for the wax to soften and give up what it was only just holding. This is why sweating complaints cluster in the hot months and why a maker will insist the recipe never changed — it did not, the weather did. The fix is margin: pour below the ceiling rather than at it, keep finished stock out of direct sun and away from west-facing walls, and do not stage cartons on a loading area in the afternoon.

A wax and oil combination that simply does not holdReal, but the fourth thing to check and not the first. Fragrance oils are compositions of many materials and their solubility in a given wax varies, so you will occasionally find one scent that separates where every other scent in your range is clean at the same load, temperature and stir time. The evidence is strictly comparative: it is only a pairing problem if a side-by-side batch on the same day with the same method proves it. Either run that scent in a different wax — Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 and Luxury Soy Chunks behave differently from CSI 464 — or keep the wax and run that scent two points lower.
Indian summer is the exam, not the illness. A candle that is clean in December and sweats in May was always marginal. Ambient temperature in most of India moves through a very wide band between the cool months and the peak of summer, and a soy container candle sitting in a shop, a warehouse, a courier hub or a customer's flat experiences all of it. If your production plan is built around Diwali on 8 November 2026, you will be pouring and curing through the tail of the hot season and shipping into the cool one, which flatters the recipe. The batch you pour in April for a summer wedding order is the one that will tell you the truth. Build the margin now: pour a point or two under the ceiling on anything that will be stored or shipped in the heat, and test a sample jar by leaving it in the warmest place you have for a week before you commit the run. The ceilings, stated correctly

There is no universal soy fragrance load, and the number circulating in maker groups is usually somebody else's wax. The figure that governs your candle is the maximum load stated by the manufacturer of the wax you actually bought. It describes how much oil that specific formulation will hold in solution. Two waxes from the same supplier can carry different numbers, and they are not interchangeable.

This is the wax most sweating reports arrive with, for a straightforward reason — it is popular, it is a single-pour container wax, and 10% is a lower ceiling than the number most makers have in their heads. On a 200 g candle that is 20 g of oil and 180 g of wax, and 22 g is not a rounding error, it is 2 g of surplus that will surface. Melt and pour in the 80–90°C band. If you need more headroom for a heavy gourmand or oriental scent, move the scent to a wax with a higher stated ceiling rather than pushing this one.

Stated fragrance load: up to 13%. Three percentage points of extra headroom sounds small and is not: on a 200 g candle it is 26 g of oil instead of 20 g. If you are running heavy woody, gourmand or oriental scents and want load at the top of the range without separation, this is the wax that is formulated to take it. It does not make 13% compulsory — the ceiling is a maximum, not a target, and on anything destined for summer storage you should sit below it deliberately.

Above the ceiling, nothing gradual happens. The surplus does not partially bind, or bind more slowly, or find room during a longer cure. It is sitting in the candle from the moment you pour, waiting to come out, and cure time is simply how long it takes to reach the surface. This is why a longer cure does not fix sweating and sometimes makes it look worse: you have given the free oil more time to travel. It is also why a candle can pass a two-day inspection and fail at day twenty-one, which is precisely when it is being packed for dispatch.

The CSI principle
Fragrance you cannot dissolve is not fragrance. It is a defect you paid extra for.
Oil above the ceiling does not reach the customer's nose. It reaches the surface of the wax, the inside of the lid and the packaging. You bought it, you carried it, and it works against you.

The cause people miss: temperature at addition

If your load is inside the stated ceiling and the candle still beads, this is almost certainly where the fault is. It is missed because nothing about it is visible at the time: a pitcher of wax with oil stirred in at 65°C looks exactly like one stirred in at 85°C, and the jars look the same when poured and the same the next morning. The difference declares itself a week or two later, on the surface.

Eco Soy CSI 400 specifies fragrance addition at 80–90°C with two minutes of stirring, and CSI 464 melts and pours in the same band. Two mechanisms are at work in that specification. The first is energy: the wax needs to be hot enough that the oil goes into solution rather than sitting between wax molecules as suspended droplets. The second is time: two minutes is a long stir, far longer than it feels, and most makers stop at thirty or forty seconds because the mixture already looks homogeneous. It looks homogeneous long before it is dissolved.

Suspended is not dissolved, and the candle can tell the difference even when you cannot. Oil that is merely dispersed exists as microscopic droplets held apart by the viscosity of the melt. As the wax cools and the crystal structure forms, those droplets are squeezed out of the growing crystals, meet each other, merge into larger droplets and rise. That is the same physical outcome as an over-load, arrived at by a different route, which is why a candle at a perfectly legal 9% in CSI 464 can sweat exactly like a candle at 13%. The two causes are distinguishable only by testing them separately — which the four-jar test below does.

Going too hot is a different mistake. Above the band you flash off the lighter, more volatile materials before the wax is even in the jar, which costs you cold throw and the opening of the scent. Over-hot addition does not usually give you sweating; it gives you a candle that smells thinner than the one you designed. The band exists because both edges are real.

Two practical points that matter more than they sound. First, a pen thermometer at ₹354 is the cheapest instrument in the workflow and there is no substitute for it — pouring "when it looks right" is how a batch drifts out of band halfway through. Second, the melt cools while you work, so on a large pour the last jars are being filled from wax that may be twenty degrees below the first. Either work in smaller batches, hold the melt in a mini electric wax melter at ₹2,360 that maintains temperature, or add fragrance to each pouring vessel rather than to the master melt. For the stir itself, bamboo stirring sticks at ₹118 for five are fine for small batches and a CSI Pro Mixer at ₹349 gives a genuinely even two-minute incorporation on larger ones.

The confirming test: four jars, fourteen days

Two causes produce one symptom, so guessing has a fifty per cent hit rate and costs a production run either way. The test separates them. It holds the wax, the oil, the vessel, the wick and the room constant and varies exactly two things — load and add temperature — across four jars. After fourteen days, the pattern of which jars beaded names your cause; if all four are clean, the fault is storage heat or a pairing issue and you can go to cause three or four with confidence.

Cure fourteen days and inspect at fixed intervalsLids on, closed carton, room temperature, out of sunlight, all four together in the same place. Inspect at day 3, day 7 and day 14 and write down what you see each time, including "nothing". Photograph each surface under the same light. Fourteen days is the minimum useful window because beading is progressive and a day-three inspection will under-report.

What over-loading actually costs

Take a 200 g candle in CSI 464 with Sandalwood at 1 kg pricing — ₹5,026.80 per kilogram, or ₹5.03 per gram. At the stated 10% ceiling that is 20 g of oil, ₹100.54. At 14% it is 28 g, ₹140.75. The surplus alone is ₹40.21 per candle, and it is the eight grams that will end up on the surface.

Read the bottom row twice. Over-loading a sixty-jar run costs ₹2,169.00 more in materials than pouring it correctly, of which ₹2,412.60 is surplus Sandalwood that will not stay in the wax. That is the cheap half of the loss. The expensive half is that the ₹17,017.20 of finished stock is not sellable: a beaded candle either fails your own inspection, in which case you have destroyed the batch, or it passes and reaches a customer, in which case you have a refund, a return, a replacement pour and a public review. There is no version of this where the extra oil earns anything.

And the candle does not even smell stronger. This is the part that makes over-loading indefensible rather than merely expensive. Oil sitting on the surface of the wax is not in the melt pool, so it is not being released into the room in any controlled way; it evaporates off the top or gets wiped away. Meanwhile the free oil interferes with the wick, which starts drawing oil rather than wax and burns badly. Why is my candle sweating oil on top?
Because the wax is not holding all the fragrance oil you added. Sweating is a solubility failure, not condensation. Wax dissolves oil up to a limit stated by the wax manufacturer; anything above that limit stays as free oil, migrates upward through the setting wax and beads on the surface. Check the load in grams against the stated ceiling for your wax first — up to 13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and up to 10% for CSI 464 — then check the temperature at which you added the fragrance.
Is candle sweating caused by humidity?
No. Humidity and condensation are the standard wrong answer. Press a clean white tissue onto the surface for five seconds: if it lifts away translucent and smelling of your fragrance, it is fragrance oil, and no amount of dehumidifying the pouring room will change it. Heat, unlike humidity, genuinely does contribute — warm storage or transit softens the wax and pushes a marginal recipe over the edge — but heat reveals the fault rather than creating it.
Can I fix a candle that is already sweating?
No, and remelting does not help. The surplus oil is already in the jar; melting the candle and letting it set again does not remove any of it, so it will separate a second time. Wiping the surface removes the beads that have surfaced and leaves the rest behind, which is worse than useless if the candle then ships. Treat a sweating batch as scrap or as burn-test stock, fix the recipe, and repour. That is exactly why the four-jar test is worth ₹454.98 before a production run rather than after it.
My load is inside the ceiling and it still sweats. Why?
Almost always the add temperature. Eco Soy CSI 400 specifies fragrance added at 80–90°C with two full minutes of stirring, and CSI 464 melts and pours in the same band. Add the oil below that band and it disperses as droplets instead of dissolving — suspended, not in solution — and those droplets coalesce and rise as the wax sets, producing beading that looks identical to an over-load. A pen thermometer at ₹354 and a timer settle it.
Why did my candles only start sweating in summer?
Because the recipe had no margin and the season found it. Warmth softens the wax matrix and reduces how much oil it will hold, so a candle poured close to the ceiling that looked perfect on a December shelf can bead in May, in a warehouse, or in a delivery vehicle standing in the sun. Nothing about your process changed. The fix is margin, not a new wax — pour a point or two under the ceiling on anything that will be stored or shipped in the heat, and leave a sample jar in the warmest place you have for a week before committing a run.
Does sweating mean my fragrance oil is bad quality?
Usually not. Sweating is about how much oil the wax can dissolve and how well you dissolved it, and both are properties of your process rather than of the oil. There is a genuine fourth cause — a particular wax and oil pairing that does not hold well together — but it is only diagnosable by comparison: same wax, same load, same temperature, same day, and one scent separates while three others are clean. If that is what you see, run that scent in a different wax such as Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468, or keep the wax and drop that one scent two points.
