A wider melt pool from a flat burning edgeCotton burns from a point; wood burns along a flat edge, delivering heat across a line, which tends to open the pool wider and shallower for the same heat. That helps in a broad vessel, and the pool surface is the area fragrance evaporates from — mechanics in the wick guide by diameter. Note tends: geometry, not a guaranteed result in your wax.

The crackleThe sound is the actual selling point. Wood releases moisture and volatile compounds as it chars, giving an intermittent crackle at a low, fireplace register. It is quiet — not a bonfire, and a customer expecting one will be disappointed. It lets a candle occupy a room audibly, which is almost impossible to convey in a listing photograph.

A flame that photographs, and a jar that reads expensiveThe flat wick gives a broad, low flame rather than a teardrop — on camera, a band of light instead of a point. If you sell through Instagram that is a commercial property, and it means the range has to be reshot, lit. Unlit, the wick still reads as the expensive one on a shelf — a merchandising reason, which only pays back if the sticker price moves with it.

This is the section most suppliers leave out, and it is why makers buy wooden wicks once, get three bad candles out of ten, and go back to cotton. None of it means the wick is defective — it means the wick is less tolerant than the one you are used to.
1 — It will not light, or will not stay lit. Wood does not draw molten fuel to a flame the way braided cotton does; a fresh wick needs longer flame contact, held for several seconds and tilted so it runs along the edge. Put this on the care card. A customer who cannot light your ₹1,200 candle will not conclude that they lit it wrong.
2 — It drowns and goes out mid-burn. Two causes that look identical from outside: the pool is too deep and floods the burning edge, or the wick is too short to hold a flame clear of it. A candle that burns well for forty minutes and then quietly goes out is almost always one of the two — the first a wick-size problem, the second a trimming problem.
3 — The fragrance load and the wax are fighting it. Oil is fuel, and a heavily loaded wax behaves differently in a wick that chars rather than draws. At the top of your wax's stated ceiling — up to 13% on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, up to 10% on CSI 464, both wax-manufacturer formulation limits rather than regulatory ones — a wooden wick is likelier to struggle than cotton, and softer waxes compound it by pooling faster and deeper. If it keeps drowning, test the load down early, and re-test the wick whenever you change wax.
Trim height matters more than it does with cotton
With cotton, an untrimmed wick gives soot and a mushroom head and most customers get away with it. With wood it is closer to a functional setting: too long and the flame is tall, smoky and burns down unevenly; too short and it drowns. Snap the charred edge off before every burn so each starts at a consistent height — a wick cutter at ₹295 does it cleanly. Put a wooden wick in a narrow jar and you have paid a premium for a wick whose one advantage — spreading heat along a line instead of a point — has nowhere to spread. Nobody can tell you which wick suits your candle without knowing the vessel and the wax. That is as true of cotton as of wood — it just costs seven times more to guess wrong here.
On wax, a slow, shallow pool is the friendlier partner. Testing them properly before you commit a range
The same three-jar burn test you should already run for cotton, with one difference: here you are not allowed to skip it. A cotton wick slightly wrong gives a slightly tunnelled candle. A wooden wick slightly wrong gives a candle that goes out.

"It seemed fine" is not.

Burn them down, not just onceThe step almost everyone skips. The first burn of a full jar is the easy case. Burn in two-to-three-hour sessions, trimming the char before each, and watch the halfway point and the last quarter, where the pool is deepest relative to the wick left. Most drowning shows up there.
Test in your exact recipe, not in someone else's. A wooden wick that performs perfectly in CSI 464 at 8% in a wide 150 g jar tells you nothing reliable about the same wick in coconut soy at 10% in a 600 g borosilicate.
