Which wick do I order? Measure the internal diameter of your jar in millimetres and use the table below as a starting point. Under roughly 55 mm start with Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) at ₹5.90 a wick; from roughly 65 mm start with Thick (C2) at ₹9.44; above roughly 85 mm plan on two wicks.Is that a guarantee? No, and no supplier can honestly give you one. Wax type, fragrance load and dye all change how much wax a wick can pull. Every recommendation on this page is a place to start burn-testing, not a specification.
How do I test? Three identical jars, three wick sizes, poured the same day and cured the same number of days. You want a full melt pool reaching the glass in two to three hours, a steady flame, no soot and no mushrooming.

Pure geometry, not test data. Because pool area grows with the square of the radius, a pool that stops 5 mm short of the glass in a 70 mm jar is releasing fragrance from under three-quarters of the available surface — and to the eye it looks almost correct. This is why under-wicking survives so long in a range, and why the fix is a ruler and three jars rather than a stronger fragrance oil.

Which candle wick should I order, and in what format?
Order by jar diameter, not by candle weight. Measure the internal diameter across the inside of the opening in millimetres, then start with Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) at ₹5.90 a wick below about 55 mm, Thick (C2) at ₹9.44 from about 65 mm, and two wicks above about 85 mm. Between 55 and 65 mm, buy both and burn them side by side — that band is where the answer genuinely depends on your wax. Treat every one of those as a starting point. Wax type, fragrance load and dye all change how fast a wick can pull wax, so the same jar wicks differently in CSI 464 flakes than in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks. On format: buy pre-tabbed wicks for consistency, loose lengths for moulds and odd vessels, and the 61 m braided roll at ₹706.82 only once you are cutting in the hundreds. Wick size by jar diameter — where to start testing
There is no such thing as the right wick for a 150 gram candle. There is only the right wick for a 68 millimetre opening, in your wax, at your fragrance load.
Most sizing mistakes start at the same place: a maker asks which wick suits a 200 gram candle. Weight tells you almost nothing, because a 200 gram candle can be a tall narrow vessel or a wide shallow one, and those two need completely different wicks. The number that matters is the internal diameter where the melt pool will sit — measure across the inside of the opening with a steel rule, and if the jar tapers, measure the widest part the pool has to reach.
CSI lists containers by fill weight and capacity — 70 gram votives, 85 and 135 gram tins, 150 gram jars with lids, 200 ml salsa jars, 130 ml Yankee-style jars, 300 and 600 gram borosilicate — rather than by internal diameter, so measure the vessel that is actually on your bench. Read that table as a starting point and nothing more. Three things move the answer, all of them independent of diameter. Wax: a soft container wax liquefies more readily than a firmer blend, so the same wick opens a wider pool in CSI 464 flakes than in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks or a coconut-soy blend. Fragrance load: oil in the wax changes how it melts and what the wick draws up, so a candle at 10% wicks differently from the same candle at 6%. Colour: pigment and dye load add solids the flame has to cope with, and heavily dyed candles frequently need a step up. Change any one of those three and the wick trial has to be repeated. That is not a sales line — it is the reason a supplier who cannot tell you which wax you bought cannot tell you which wick you need.
Measure the pool, not the flame
Makers judge wicks by looking at the flame. The flame is a symptom; the pool is the product. Put a strip of masking tape down the outside of one test jar and mark where the melt pool edge sits at one, two and three hours. You then have a written record instead of an impression, and something to compare the next batch against. A jar that reaches the glass at 2 hours 40 minutes is a pass. This is the only method that settles a wick question, and it takes one pour and one evening. The discipline is not in the burning — it is in making the three jars genuinely identical apart from the wick.

Pour three identical jars from one meltSame vessel, same wax, same fragrance oil at the same load, same dye, same pour temperature, same day, same room. Melt enough for all three in one pitcher and pour them back to back — three separate melts means three extra variables and a worthless test. Label the base of each jar with the wick in it before you pour, not after.

Fit the wick straight, centred and stuck downA wick leaning 3 mm off centre will burn a lopsided pool and you will wrongly conclude the size is wrong. Use a wick sticker at ₹2.50 each so the tab cannot shift, and hold the top with a bamboo wick holder at ₹23.60 each or a wick centering device at the same ₹23.60. For a tall or narrow vessel a steel straw wick inserter at ₹59 gets the tab flat on the base without you reaching in with your fingers.

Cure all three the same number of days, then burn them togetherCure with lids on, out of sunlight, then burn all three at once on the same table with no draught, no fan and no air conditioning across them. Trim each wick to roughly 5 mm before lighting. A draught across one jar drags its flame sideways and hands you a false failure.

Run the first burn for three to four hours and log four thingsTime to full pool — you want the melt to reach the glass all the way round between two and three hours. Flame height and steadiness — a tall, restless, flickering flame in still air means too much fuel. Soot — any black deposit on the inside of the glass or a smoking tip is a fail. Mushrooming — a carbon ball on the wick tip means the wick is drawing more wax than it can burn. One fail on any of those four is a fail overall.

Do a second and third burn before you decideThe first burn sets the memory ring, and a first-burn pass can still tunnel later. Let each jar cool completely, trim, burn again, and watch for the pool narrowing on the second burn. Only after three burns do you order — and then for one product line, not the whole range, because a different jar means a different test.
An oversized wick is not a shortcut to more throw. The logic is seductive: pool area is release area, therefore a bigger wick makes a wider pool faster, therefore more fragrance in the room. It fails in practice for four reasons. The pool gets deeper as well as wider, and a deep pool burns fragrance off rather than releasing it — you lose top notes to the flame. The flame runs hotter and taller, which soots the glass and gives you a black rim that customers photograph and return. The candle burns down faster, so a customer who expected forty hours gets thirty and reads the candle as poor value. And a wick that is drawing more wax than it can consume mushrooms, which drops carbon into the pool and makes each relight worse than the last. The correct wick is the smallest one that reaches the glass in two to three hours cleanly — not the largest one that reaches it fastest.
The CSI principle
A wick recommendation is a hypothesis. A burn test is evidence. Never ship a candle on a hypothesis.

Buy it when the vessel is not a standard jar: pillar moulds, tall narrow containers, anything you thread from the base and trim to length. What a wick actually costs you per candle. Take a 150 gram jar candle: Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at ₹507.40/kg gives ₹76.11 of wax, a Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid at ₹944.00 per 10 gives ₹94.40 of vessel, and an Eco C1 wick plus a sticker gives ₹8.40. That is ₹178.91 of wax, glass and wick — and the wick and sticker are 4.7% of it. Swap in a wooden wick at ₹41.30 and the same candle costs ₹214.31, with the wick now 20.4% of your material cost. This is the decision that looks like a saving and often is not. Buying wick by the roll is cheaper per metre by a very large margin, so cutting your own must be cheaper than buying finished wicks. The per-metre figure is real. The conclusion does not follow.

Read the third column against the fourth. On the hundred tabs that ship with it, the roll costs ₹7.07 a wick against ₹5.90 for a ready-made Eco C1 — so for its first hundred wicks it is the more expensive option, not the cheaper one. Everything after that is where the saving lives: fifty-one metres of wick remain at ₹1.16 per 10 cm cut, which is a fifth of the price of a finished C1. But those metres are only wick. To turn them into candles you need tabs, and tabs are a separate sourcing problem you have just taken on.
There is one comparison here that settles the format question for anyone working with moulds. The 10 metre loose pack is ₹708.00. The 61 metre roll is ₹706.82. They cost within ₹1.18 of each other and one contains six times as much wick. If your work is pillar candles, tapers, designer moulds or anything else where the wick is threaded through the base rather than tabbed to it, the roll is the obvious buy and it is not close. If your work is tabbed container candles, the roll is a volume tool and not a beginner's economy.
The honest answer on when cutting your own starts paying. It pays when three things are true at once: you are pouring in the hundreds per month, so the fifty-one leftover metres actually get used rather than sitting in a drawer; you are pouring into one or two vessel sizes, so every cut is the same length and you are not re-measuring; and you either do not need tabs at all or you have a reliable tab supply. Below that, ready-made wins on the only two things that matter at small scale — your time, and your consistency. Wooden wicks — when they are worth ₹35.40 more
A Performance Wooden Wick at its best tier costs ₹41.30 against ₹5.90 for an Eco C1. On a 150 gram candle that ₹35.40 is more than a fifth of your material cost, and it buys exactly one thing: a different product. Not a better burn, not a stronger throw — a different product, with a crackle, a wide flat flame and a look that reads as premium behind glass.
That is worth paying for when the customer is buying an object rather than a scent, when the candle is a gift or hamper item, or when your price point is high enough that ₹35.40 disappears into the margin. At ₹1,200 retail the wooden wick is 3% of the price and it changes the unboxing. At ₹350 it is 12%, and it comes out of your margin, not the customer's.
What actually changes when you switch to wood

Who should not bother with wooden wicks
Three types of maker. Anyone still fixing a burn problem — if your cotton candles tunnel or soot, a wooden wick will not fix it and will hide the cause. Anyone at a low retail price point — at ₹41.30 a wick you are spending a fifth of your material cost on a feature, and a customer paying ₹350 is buying scent, not crackle. Anyone selling into a market that will not be told how to use it — wooden wicks generate more "it keeps going out" messages than any other component, and if you cannot get a care card in front of the customer you will pay for it in returns. Test them, price them properly, or leave them alone.Why it matters that your wick supplier also sells you the wax
This is the argument that makes a wick supplier worth choosing rather than just worth buying from, and it is a testing argument, not a convenience one. Wick performance is not a property of the wick. It is a property of the wick-and-wax pair. The same Eco C2 opens a different pool in CSI 464 flakes than it does in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, in a coconut-soy blend or in beeswax. Add a fragrance load and a dye and you have a four-way interaction.
When wax and wick come from two suppliers, every batch that goes wrong is a two-variable problem. The wax lot changed, or the wick lot changed, or both, and you cannot tell which — so you re-test both, which is four combinations instead of two and a fortnight instead of a weekend. When they come from one supplier, you have one point of contact who can tell you whether anything moved, and when you do re-test, you re-test one variable. That is the whole of the argument, and it is worth more than any bulk discount on this page.
The practical version: settle your wax first, then wick to it, then hold both constant and change only fragrance. Choosing between soy grades is a separate decision. What size wick do I need for a 7 cm jar?
For a measured internal diameter of 70 mm, start with a single Eco Thick (C2) at ₹9.44 and test two Thin (C1) at ₹5.90 each against it. A full pool in a 70 mm jar is 38.5 cm², and you are looking for the melt to reach the glass all the way round in two to three hours with no soot and no mushrooming. This is a starting point, not a specification — your wax, fragrance load and dye all move it, which is why you burn three jars before you order five hundred wicks.
Is it cheaper to buy a wick roll and cut my own?
Per metre, yes, by a long way — the 61 metre Braided Wick Roll at ₹706.82 works out at ₹11.59 a metre against ₹70.80 for the ten-metre loose pack. Per finished wick, not necessarily. The roll ships with 100 wick tabs, so out of the box it makes 100 tabbed wicks at ₹7.07 each — more than a ready-made Eco C1 at ₹5.90. The roll wins when you are threading wick through moulds and need no tabs at all, or when you are pouring in the hundreds and have your own tab supply.
Do I get a discount if I buy 1,000 wicks?
On the eco and cotton wicks, no — and we would rather say so than let you over-order. Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) are ₹5.90 a wick at 10 and ₹5.90 a wick at 1,000; Thick (C2) are ₹9.44 throughout; Cotton Braided Wicks are ₹12.00 throughout. The one wick with a genuine volume break is the Performance Wooden Wick: ₹59.00 each at 10, ₹47.20 at 50 and ₹41.30 at 100. Will a bigger wick make my candle smell stronger?
A correctly sized wick will, because the melt pool surface is where fragrance leaves the candle — a pool that reaches only 60 mm across in a 70 mm jar is releasing from 28.3 cm² instead of 38.5 cm², under three-quarters of what is available. An oversized wick will not. It makes the pool deeper as well as wider, burns top notes off in the flame rather than releasing them, soots the glass, mushrooms and shortens the burn time your customer paid for. Aim for the smallest wick that reaches the glass cleanly in two to three hours.
Are wooden wicks worth the extra cost?
They are worth it when the crackle and the flat flame are part of what you are selling and your price point can carry them. At ₹41.30 each in a pack of 100 against ₹5.90 for an Eco C1, a wooden wick adds ₹35.40 to a candle's material cost — around 3% of a ₹1,200 retail candle and around 12% of a ₹350 one. They also need their own burn test from scratch, a large wick sticker at ₹6.23, and a care instruction telling the customer to let the flame establish and to trim before each relight.
Which wick accessories do I actually need?
Two, at ₹2.50 and ₹23.60. A wick sticker at ₹2.50 stops the tab moving during the pour, and a bamboo wick holder at ₹23.60 each in a set of 5 holds the wick straight while the wax sets without clamping it. Everything else is a scale or a vessel-shape problem: a steel straw inserter at ₹59 for narrow jars, a wicking needle at ₹472 for moulds, a wick setting tool at ₹399 for volume, and a trimmer from ₹177.
