Yes, then no: the shape of the answer
Plot what a room notices against fragrance load and you do not get a straight line. You get three regions. Low down — roughly the first six points of load — every gram counts and the difference between 3% and 6% is obvious to anybody. In the middle, around 8% to 10%, the line bends: each extra gram still adds something, but less than the gram before it. Above that, in the region each wax page marks as its maximum, the line is nearly flat, while the cost of the oil carries on rising in a perfectly straight line. That divergence is the whole answer to this question.
Three separate things cause the bend, and it is worth naming them now because the rest of this page works through them one at a time. First, what reaches the room is what evaporates from the melt pool, and the pool has a fixed surface area that does not grow when you add oil. Second, the nose responds to proportion, not to grams, so each step up is a smaller relative change than the one before. Third, the wax has a stated limit on what it can hold, and oil beyond that limit is not fragrance any more — it is free oil sitting where it causes problems.

None of this is a reason to pour thin candles. It is a reason to know which region you are standing in before you buy another kilogram of oil. A maker at 4% who moves to 8% will hear the difference across a room. A maker at 8% moving to 10% is paying ₹18.97 more per 200 g candle in Apple Cinnamon for a change that may not survive a blind comparison (why more fragrance oil does not always mean stronger candles).
What reaches the room is what leaves the pool
Think of a pan of water on a low flame. Doubling the water in the pan does not double the steam; widening the pan does. A candle behaves the same way. Fragrance leaves a lit candle from the surface of the melt pool, driven by the heat of the flame. The wax below the pool is a store, not a source. So the two things that set output are the area of that pool and how hot it runs — and only one of those is under your control at the bench.
Pool area is decided by the jar width and the wick, and it scales with the square of the width. Three real CSI containers make the point. A Heart Cutout Velvet Candle Jar is 5.3 cm across on its page, giving a full pool of about 22.06 cm². A Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid at roughly 6.5 cm across the base gives about 33.18 cm² — 50% more surface for a width that is only a quarter larger. Here is the same point in grams, as illustrative arithmetic rather than a measurement. Take the 6.5 cm jar with a full pool about 6 mm deep: that is roughly 19.9 cm³ of molten wax, or about 17.9 g at a typical soy density near 0.9 g per cm³ — a general figure, not a CSI specification. At 8% that pool holds around 1.43 g of fragrance oil at any moment; at 10%, about 1.79 g. The candle contains 12 g or 15 g in total, but the room only ever gets what is in that thin hot layer. Raising the load raises the concentration in the layer; it does not make the layer bigger.
This is also why the same oil reads louder in paraffin than in soy. Soy runs a cooler, shallower pool and holds its fragrance more tightly, so the release is slower and steadier — pleasant in a bedroom, underwhelming in a hall (why the same fragrance smells strong in paraffin but weak in soy). If your candle has to fill a large open-plan room, the honest fixes are a wider jar, a larger or additional wick, or both, and a CSI buyer’s note that Eco wicks are “quality wick, works very well” for jar candles is more relevant to that problem than any load table.
Why the nose counts proportions, not grams
Human senses are proportional. A room lit by one candle becomes obviously brighter with a second; the twentieth candle changes almost nothing, even though each one adds the same light. Smell behaves the same way: what registers is the ratio between the new concentration and the old one, not the number of grams added. This is ordinary perceptual science, taught in every perfumery course, and it has a blunt consequence for fragrance load.
Each step up the load ladder costs the same rupees per point and delivers a smaller proportional change. On the series costing unit of 200 g of wax, a percentage point is 2 g of oil — ₹9.49 of Apple Cinnamon or ₹9.06 of Woody Oud at 1 kg pricing. The table shows what that buys at each step.

Read the middle column and the pattern is unmistakable. The step from 6% to 8% is a third more fragrance; from 8% to 10%, a quarter more; and you have to spend half as much again, ₹28.46 a candle, to get from 10% to 13%. Meanwhile the cost column never bends. That is the mathematical reason the curve flattens even before the wax or the pool has anything to say about it — and it is why so many makers report that the jump from 6% to 8% was obvious and the jump from 8% to 10% was a matter of opinion.
There is a practical corollary. If you want a genuinely noticeable step up in perceived strength, a single percentage point will rarely deliver it; you need a proportionally large move, which for most soy grades means jumping straight into the flat region or past the ceiling. That is the trap. The better answer is to stop pushing the one lever that has flattened and change a different one — pool, cure, wick or oil — because those are not on the flat part of any curve.
Past the ceiling, extra oil stops being fragrance
Every CSI soy grade that publishes a fragrance load publishes it as a maximum, and those maximums are the wax manufacturer’s formulation figures, not a target. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks state up to 13%, with 8% named as a starting point and 10% as the recommended load. Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 states up to 13%. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states up to 10%. Eco Soy CSI 400 does not publish a figure at all — ask on WhatsApp before planning a range around it.

What happens if you go past? The oil that the set wax cannot keep does not disappear and it does not throw. It shows up as a greasy sheen or beads on the surface, as an oily film where wax meets glass, and as marks under a lid or inside a gift box after a week in an Indian October (why candles sweat fragrance oil). None of those symptoms is scent reaching a customer; all of them are scent leaving the candle in the wrong direction, plus a returns conversation.
There is a second, less obvious effect. Fragrance oil is fuel as well as scent. A wick sized for a candle at 8% is being asked to burn a different mixture at 13%, and the usual result is a taller flame, soot on the glass and a carbon mushroom by hour two. A sooty candle reads as cheap to a customer regardless of how much fragrance went into it. If you do move up a load, re-test the wick at the new load rather than assuming the old one still fits.
The oil’s own page sets a ceiling too, and where the two differ the lower figure governs. Most CSI single notes give 6–10% for candles: Apple Cinnamon states 6–10% of total wax weight for soy with a 48–72 hour cure, Woody Oud gives 6–10% for candles, Lavender gives 6–10%, while Japanese Cherry Blossom runs wider at 6–13%. A wax rated to 13% does not lift an oil page that stops at 10% — so for most oils, the flat region and the published limit arrive at almost the same place.

What the climb costs across a range
The arithmetic is worth keeping on the wall, because it converts a decision that feels sensory into one you can actually sign off. On 200 g of wax, one percentage point is exactly 2 g of oil. Five hundred candles at 200 g therefore consume exactly 1 kg of extra oil per percentage point — which makes the 1 kg price of your oil the price of one point across a 500-candle run. For Apple Cinnamon that is ₹4,743.60; for Woody Oud, ₹4,531.20.

Put that beside a whole candle. In Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, a 200 g candle with an Eco C1 wick costs ₹201.60 in wax, oil and wick at 8%, ₹220.57 at 10% and ₹249.03 at the page’s 13% ceiling — jar, lid, label, box and courier excluded. Moving from 8% to the ceiling raises materials by roughly a quarter to buy the flattest part of the curve. The same money, spent on wicks and jars, changes the physics of the candle rather than the concentration inside it.
There is one more cost that never appears on an invoice: consistency. A range poured at four different loads because each fragrance “needed a bit more” is a range you cannot quote, cannot reorder oil for, and cannot troubleshoot. Pick a house load per format, document it, and let the levers in the previous section carry the differences between fragrances.
When more oil genuinely is the answer
This page is not an argument for thin candles. It is an argument against reaching for the load lever first. Raise the load when all four of these hold, and the money is well spent.

Where those four hold, raise by a single point and judge it properly: pour two candles from the same melt, change only the oil weight, cure them together, and have somebody who does not know which is which tell you whether they can name the stronger one from the doorway. If two people out of three cannot, the point did not pay and you have learned it for ₹9.49 a candle rather than ₹4,743.60 a season. Evidence from CSI customers fits this pattern — a Lavender buyer reports that “hot throw is also very good after burn candle”, and a Woody Oud buyer describes “a warm, long-lasting scent and strong performance in candles”, both at the loads those pages recommend rather than above them.
Certain products genuinely justify sitting higher in the range. A large, wide candle burned in a hall; a light floral or aquatic whose volatile top notes leave the pool fast; a gift candle that has to announce itself the moment a box is opened. Even then, stay under the lower of the two published figures, re-test the wick at the new load, and put a point of margin between yourself and the ceiling if the stock will travel in an Indian summer.
Indian rooms, Indian heat, Indian expectations
Indian homes make life difficult for a soy candle in three specific ways. Rooms are often cross-ventilated by design, and air movement carries fragrance away from the pool before it can build. Ceiling fans run for much of the year, and a fan on speed three empties a small room faster than any load can fill it. And open-plan kitchen-living spaces give a single 150 g candle four or five times the volume it was designed for. None of that is fixed by a percentage point.
Heat pushes the other way. In a Delhi, Ahmedabad or Nagpur April, a candle poured at its grade’s maximum has no margin left when a parcel spends an afternoon in a van, and the first thing you will see is a greasy top or an oily film at the glass — scent leaving the candle before the customer ever lights it. In a Mumbai, Kolkata or Kochi monsoon, the practical priorities are lids on through the cure, prompt packing, and dry storage. In both cases a point of margin below the stated ceiling costs ₹9.49 a candle and buys real protection.

Customer expectation is the last variable, and the least discussed. Many Indian buyers compare a soy candle to an agarbatti or a dhoop cone — products designed to scent a whole house in minutes. A soy candle is a slower, quieter thing, and no load makes it behave like incense. Saying so on the product page, and putting candle care instructions (₹413.00 for 500) on the base of every jar asking for a first burn to a full pool and a trimmed wick, protects the throw you did pay for. A wick trimmer at ₹295.00 is the tool most customers do not own and most candles need.
