Seven stages, seven numbers to hit

A hobby candle is made. A commercial candle is made to a number — and the equipment exists to hit that number every time.

The difference between hobby and commercial production is not volume; it is repeatability. A customer who reorders a candle expects the same smell, the same burn and the same look. That only happens if every stage lands on the same measurable value in every batch. So before listing equipment, list the numbers. The table pairs each stage with its target, where the target comes from, the equipment that hits it, and what to record.

Read the "where the number comes from" column carefully, because it is the most common source of commercial failure. The melter's dial shows the melter's temperature, with a stated ±10°C deviation; your wax's product page gives the temperatures that matter; your jar's product page gives the heat the glass is rated for. Three different pages, three different numbers, one thermometer to reconcile them. Which is why the thermometer, not the melter, is the most-used piece of equipment on the line.

Used to confirm the melter's reading, time the fragrance add, catch the pour temperature and check the cure room. The product page describes it as designed for accuracy and suited to professional and DIY makers; it does not state a temperature range or accuracy, so check it against a known reference — melted wax at the add temperature your wax page gives — before you trust it with a production batch. A commercial line runs two: one at the melter, one at the pouring bench.

A digital scale with an LCD that reads in grams or ounces, described for measuring wax, dye and fragrance oils. Its page does not state a maximum capacity, which matters on a commercial line: a full 10 kg melter load for 54 × 200g candles is 9,936g of wax and 864g of oil. Weigh the wax in portions you know the scale handles, and keep a second scale for oil so a spill on one never stops the other. Weigh oil into the 250 ml silicone beaker (₹600) rather than measuring by millilitre.

CSI Pro Mixer — Cordless Handheld Mixer
A USB-C rechargeable handheld whisk with a stainless-steel spring coil head. For candles, its page says to add fragrance to wax at 80–85°C, then run the mixer for 60–90 seconds until uniform, and to avoid using it in wax above 95°C. It turns "stir well" into a timed step you can write down. The page states a battery life of 30–45 minutes of continuous use per charge, which covers many batches at 90 seconds each. Keep a silicone spatula (₹175.82, stated heat-resistant to 250°C) beside it to scrape the vessel clean.

Stage 7 · finish
Hot Air Gun
The finishing tool that rescues rough tops, frosting marks and small sinkholes without a second pour. The page states it reaches about 200°C within a few seconds, that the temperature cannot be adjusted, and that you should keep 5–6 cm from the work at about a 45° angle. Because it cannot be turned down, distance and time are your controls: pass across the surface briefly and stop as soon as the top glosses. One CSI customer has used it "for the past 3 years", which is the kind of durability a finishing station needs.

Stages 1–3: weigh, melt, blend

These three stages decide the candle's chemistry: how much oil, in how much wax, added at what temperature. Get them right and the rest of the line is handling. Get them wrong and no amount of careful pouring will fix the throw.

Weigh. Fragrance load is a percentage of the finished candle. A 200g candle at 8% is 184g of wax and 16g of oil; at 10% it is 180g and 20g. A 54-candle batch at 8% needs 9,936g of wax and 864g of oil — so a 1 kg bottle of fragrance covers about 62 candles at that load. Some wax pages phrase their load as a share of wax weight instead; pick one convention for your whole line and record it on every batch sheet.

Melt. The commercial melter is the Electric Wax Melter (Imported). Its page states 9.5 litres, 10 kg of soy wax in approximately 30 minutes at 100°C, a 60–100°C display and a ±10°C deviation. The 20 kg model is ₹25,960, ₹4,720 more. Keep the 1 litre Mini Electric Wax Melter (₹2,360; Gear I approximately 70–85°C, Gear II up to 100–120°C; 1-year warranty stated) for test batches, so a new fragrance never means draining the production tank. The mistake: trusting the dial for a low-pour wax. If you move a line to CSI 468, its stated pour temperature of 58–60°C is at or below the lowest temperature the melter's display shows (60°C), and the display carries a stated ±10°C deviation. Holding the melter "at 60" and pouring straight from the melter can put wax in the jar well above or below the stated window. Draw into a steel pitcher, read the pen thermometer, and pour when it is inside 58–60°C. Stages 4–5: wick and pour

Wicking and pouring are where a batch is either identical or merely similar.

Wick. Fix each wick with a wick sticker (₹2.50 each in sheets of 40), then hold it upright with a Steel Wick Holder (₹50 a position, stated for jars up to 9 cm). Buy positions for your largest pour round: 25 for a 25-jar tray. Vessels wider than 9 cm need a different holder — the Apothecary Glass Candle Jar, for example, states an outer rim of approximately 10 cm, so use the magnetic Wick Setting Tool (₹399) for that line. A ₹59 wick inserter completes the station.

Pour. The Wax Pouring Funnel with 4 nozzles (₹1,888) fills a tray in rounds; its page describes food-grade stainless steel, a lever, a rack and a silicone plug, but states no capacity, so time a tray of your own jars before planning with it. The 600 ml Steel Pouring Pitcher (₹708) handles small runs, top-ups and temperature-sensitive waxes. Check the jar's page before the first pour: the Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid and the Apothecary jar both state they are safe for hot pour up to 85°C. Label the tray, not the jar
On a commercial line, the batch number goes on the tray the moment wicks are fixed — before wax arrives. Every jar on that tray then shares one batch record: wax lot, oil lot, add temperature, pour temperature, wick size, pour date. If a customer reports a problem three months later, a tray label is the difference between recalling 25 candles and recalling a month's output.

Stages 6–7: cure, test, finish

Cure and test. Soy container candles are normally cured for 14–21 days before sale, and the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page advises at least 48 hours, ideally one to two weeks, before burn testing. The equipment here is mostly space, which CSI does not supply: shelving or racks out of sunlight, away from heat, with lids on. Plan it from your pour rhythm. As an illustration: three 54-candle pours a week is 162 candles a week; with a three-week cure, about 486 candles sit on shelves at any time once production is steady. From every batch, pull one candle for a burn test after cure and light it with an electric lighter — the Candle Lighter Electric (₹354) states it charges in about an hour and gives more than 500 sparks. Finish. After setting: glossy tops with the hot air gun, wicks trimmed with a wick cutter (₹295, stated 5.5 cm blade), spills lifted with a steel scraper (₹236), and a care label on every candle from a care sticker roll (500 for ₹413, 1,000 for ₹699). The Candle Wick Trimmer page suggests trimming to 1/4 inch before every burn — a useful line for the customer care label.

The mistake: skipping the burn test because the batch "looks the same". A batch can look identical and burn differently: a new wax lot, a new oil lot, a humid week or a wick that sat in a holder slightly off-centre. The cost of one test candle from a 54-candle batch is under 2% of the batch (1 ÷ 54 = 1.9%). The cost of shipping a batch that tunnels is the customer. Keep the test candle's result on the batch record and release the tray only when it passes.
The CSI principle
Commercial equipment is not what makes more candles. It is what makes the next candle the same as the last one.
A ₹21,240 melter increases output. A ₹354 thermometer, a ₹354 scale and a written batch record make that output sellable twice to the same customer. Buy both, but never buy the first without the second.

The scale-up column shows the real pattern of commercial growth: the second phase is not new kinds of equipment but duplicates of the first — a second melter so two waxes run side by side, a second funnel so two people pour, more positions. The batch record that makes it commercial

Every instrument on the checklist produces a reading, and a reading nobody writes down is wasted. One sheet per batch — or one row in a spreadsheet — turns the equipment into a controlled process. Here is the order in which the record fills in as the batch moves down the line.

How do I make every candle batch consistent in commercial production?
Give every stage a number and record it. Weigh wax and oil to the gram (184g and 16g per 200g candle at 8%), add fragrance at the temperature your wax page states and mix for a fixed time, centre wicks with holders, pour at the stated pour temperature below the jar's hot-pour limit, cure 14–21 days, and burn-test one candle per batch before release. A five-line batch record per tray makes all of it traceable.
