Quick answers — read this first
What actually breaks a candle jar? Not heat — a temperature difference across the glass. The inside face gets hot and tries to expand, the outside face stays cool and refuses, and the outer surface is pulled into tension. Glass is strong in compression and weak in tension, so the crack starts at the coolest, most flawed outside surface and runs.

Why does the base fail more than the wall? Because the base is usually the thickest part of the jar, and thickness makes the temperature difference across the glass larger, not smaller. It is also where the flame ends up, and where the wax that was absorbing the heat has gone.

Can I use any pretty glass jar? Only after you have burned one to the bottom three times. A jar that is sound for storing pickle has never been asked to take four hours of one-sided heat, forty times over.

Which CSI glass takes heat best? Borosilicate, at ₹200.00 for the 600 g jar — borosilicate expands far less for the same temperature rise, so the same heat generates much less stress.
The short answer
Judge glass on four properties, in this order: whether it is annealed and sold for candles, base thickness, wall thickness, and internal diameter. Colour and finish are the last decision, not the first.
Burn-test every new vessel to the bottom before you sell in it. Three jars, three full burn-downs past the 10 mm line, on a test unit you are willing to destroy. Photographing a filled jar proves nothing about how it behaves in hour thirty-eight.

The failure is almost never at the moment of lighting. It is at the end of the burn, at the base, where the glass is thickest, the flame is nearest and the wax that was absorbing the heat has been consumed. That is the whole argument for the 10 mm stop line and for burning a test jar all the way down before you ever sell in that vessel.
Straight answer
What makes a glass jar suitable for a candle, and how do you buy it in India?
A candle jar has to survive sustained, one-sided, repeated heating — three to four hours at a time, forty or more times, with the heat source moving steadily closer to the base. Glass fails under that when one part of it is hot and an adjacent part is cool, because the hot part expands against the cool part and puts the cool outer surface into tension, which is the one load glass is bad at. Three things decide the outcome: how evenly thick the glass is, how well it was annealed after forming, and how much wax is left to absorb heat at the moment you are testing. That last one is why the end of the burn is the dangerous part, and why the only meaningful test is to burn a jar to the bottom, three times, before you sell a single candle in it. One line: glass breaks on temperature difference, not temperature — so buy for even walls, a sane base and a known diameter, then burn one to the bottom before you trust it.

Glass and heat: what is actually happening in that jar

Glass does not break because it got hot. It breaks because one part of it got hot while the part next to it did not.

Start with the load case. A candle is not a brief heat event: it is three to four hours of continuous, one-sided heating, repeated thirty to fifty times, with the heat source descending through the vessel as the fuel is consumed — and the thing absorbing most of that heat gets smaller every hour. A jam jar is filled hot once and then sits cold for a year. Nothing else a jar does looks like a candle.

Now the material. Glass expands when heated, and the property that matters is the coefficient of thermal expansion — how much a given length grows per degree. Ordinary soda-lime container glass, which is what nearly every candle jar in India is made from, has a relatively high one; borosilicate has a much lower one.

The mechanism, in order. The flame heats the wax and the inner face of the glass. Glass is a poor conductor of heat — that is why a glass mug keeps tea warm — so heat does not cross the wall quickly. A gradient develops through the thickness: the inner face hot, the outer face cooler because it is losing heat to the room. The hot inner face tries to expand and the cooler outer face restrains it, so the inner face ends up in compression and the outer face in tension.

This is the fact to carry away. Glass is enormously strong in compression and weak in tension. Every candle-jar failure you have seen is a tensile failure on the cooler surface, usually the outside, and it starts at a flaw — a transit scratch, a chipped base rim, a mould seam, a microscopic defect from forming. The flaw concentrates stress at its tip, the crack initiates there, and once it starts it runs faster than you can react.

Which leads to the counter-intuitive part, and the one that costs Indian makers most. Thicker glass is not safer glass. Thickness is the distance over which the gradient develops: make the wall thicker and, for the same heat going in, the inner face runs hotter relative to the outer face, so the temperature difference is bigger and the tensile stress is bigger. Heavy glass also stores more heat between burns. Thin, even glass sheds heat quickly and runs closer to one uniform temperature, which is the safe condition.

So the word to insist on with a supplier is even, not thick. A jar with a 3 mm wall on one side and 6 mm on the other — an ordinary outcome of cheap mould work — has a built-in temperature difference the moment you light it. Run a finger round the inside and you can often feel the wall change. That five-second check catches more bad vessels than any specification sheet.

The CSI principle
Heat does not break glass. Differences in heat break glass.
Even walls, a centred wick, no draught across one face, no cold surface under a hot jar, and a wax level that never drops so low that nothing is left to absorb the flame. Each is the same instruction, stated about a different part of the system.

Annealing: the property you are buying and cannot see

A jar is formed soft and hot. Cool it quickly and the outside sets while the inside is still contracting, freezing permanent internal stress into the finished jar. Annealing is the controlled slow cool through the band where glass can still relieve stress, gentle enough that those stresses relax out before the glass rigidifies. A properly annealed jar starts at near-zero residual stress, so its full strength is available to resist what your candle adds. A poorly annealed one has already spent part of its strength holding itself together, and goes over the limit sooner — sometimes only on the fortieth burn, which is the worst case commercially, because by then the candle is in a customer's home.

You cannot inspect for annealing
Residual stress is invisible without polarised light, and no maker is setting up a polariscope. That is exactly why the burn test below is not optional: annealing quality is inferred from behaviour, not from looking. It is also why reordering the same vessel from the same supplier beats saving a few rupees on an unknown one — consistency of process is what you are paying for.

Why borosilicate sits in its own category

Thermal stress scales with the coefficient of expansion. Borosilicate's is a fraction of soda-lime's, so the same temperature difference across the wall generates proportionally less stress. It is not stronger glass in the ordinary sense — it is glass that cares much less about temperature differences. Two caveats: tolerance is not permission to abuse the candle, because a wick licking the wall still overheats one spot and the 10 mm rule still applies; and at 600 g this is a large, long-burning candle, not a drop-in replacement for a 150 g gift jar.

Why a jar that is fine for storage cracks with a candle in it

This failure catches new brands late, usually after the first hundred units have shipped. A maker finds a beautiful vessel — a pickle jar from a wholesale market, a decorative piece from a homeware supplier. Thick, heavy, clearly good glass. They fill it, photograph it, burn it for an hour, and put it on sale. Six weeks later a customer sends a photograph of a jar split around the base.

Nothing was wrong with the glass. It was designed, formed and annealed for a different load case: internal pressure, the vacuum of a cap, one brief near-uniform hot-fill cycle, and being knocked about in crates — not forty sessions of localised heating from a flame inside it. "Food-safe" describes what will not leach into your pickle. It says nothing about how the jar behaves with a wick in it.

The three ways it typically goes wrong. One: the base is a thick moulded slab with a punt or seam, so it develops the largest gradient in the jar exactly where the flame ends up. Two: wall thickness is uneven because the mould was cut for volume and cost, so the two sides can never reach the same temperature. Three: the glass was annealed to a schedule adequate for packaging, which is a lower bar than a vessel thermally cycled dozens of times. Any one of the three survives photograph day and fails in week six.

The burn test, in full

Three jars, three wicks and about a day and a half of unattended time per vessel. Run it for every new container, and re-run it whenever you change wick size, wax or fragrance load, because all three change how much heat reaches the glass.

If it cracks, it cracks here — better in your workshop than on a customer's shelf.

Inspect cold, and keep the evidenceCheck the base rim and lower wall in strong light for hairline crazing — a fine network of surface cracks that has not yet run. Crazing is a pass-with-warning, not a pass. Photograph each jar, note vessel, wick, wax and pack batch, and file it: when you reorder from a different production run you have a baseline to test against.
Reject the combination, not the jar
A cracked test jar usually means too much wick for that vessel, not bad glass. Every rule below follows directly from the mechanism above. None is decorative safety language — each stops a specific temperature difference forming in a specific place. Which is the argument for printing them: a customer who understands why follows the rule, and one who follows the rule does not send you a photograph of a broken jar.

Add two more if you have room: never move a lit or hot jar, and never set a hot jar on cold stone, marble or metal — that pulls heat out of the base in seconds, thermal shock from the opposite direction to the one everybody worries about. Both are common household habits and both break jars.

Votives earn their place for a reason that has nothing to do with price. At ₹31.86 each for the Clear Glass Votive 70 g and the White Matte Votive 70 g (₹159.30 for five, ₹318.60 for ten), or ₹36.00 for the pink, a votive is the cheapest full burn test you can run: 70 g reaches the dangerous last 10 mm far sooner than 150 g, and a small internal diameter means a small wick. Internal diameter drives the wick

One paragraph, because this belongs to the wick guide. The only jar dimension that sets wick size is the internal diameter at the level the wax sits — not fill weight, not the outside measurement, not the family. The wick must open a melt pool that reaches the wall in two to three hours and no faster: too small and you tunnel, too large and you overheat the glass, which loops straight back to the failure mechanism at the top of this page. Measure across the wax line in millimetres, write it on your record sheet, and choose from there. What to ask a glass supplier before you commit

The last is the expensive one. When a vessel changes, everything attached to it changes: the wick you validated, the carton that fitted it, the label die-cut to its curve, your photography, and the burn-test record that justified all of it. Treat a container choice as a two-year commitment. If the answer is vague, buy two years of stock now or design with a vessel that is clearly a repeat line.

Where our glass range is thin — check before you design around it

This is the section a supplier is not supposed to write, and the one most likely to save you money. A glass range is only as good as the parts of it in stock when you need them, and on the 10 September 2026 pull the CSI container range has real, specific gaps. Confirm stock before you build a collection, not after.

Borosilicate is effectively one SKU. Having spent several hundred words on why borosilicate is the material answer to thermal stress, the honest position is this: of three borosilicate listings, only the 600 g jar at ₹200.00 is in stock. The 300 g at ₹120.00 and the 250 g pack of 5 at ₹375.00 are both out. If your plan was a borosilicate range across three sizes, you do not have a range — you have one large jar. Ask about restock dates before you commit artwork.
The entire bamboo-lid category is out of stock. Coloured votives and coloured frosted finishes have holes in them. A structural point against ourselves, too: the most useful specifications on this page — internal diameter, wall thickness, base thickness, annealing schedule — are not published on our listings, and not on most Indian suppliers' listings either. That is a weakness of the market, not a feature. The workaround is to ask, which is why the WhatsApp number appears twice here — but a workaround is not a spec sheet and we will not pretend otherwise.

And most simply: if the vessel you want is not here, buy it where it is. A brand held together by a jar it cannot reorder is worse off than one buying glass from a second supplier while buying wax, wicks and fragrance here. Consolidation is a real efficiency — the case is in the one-supplier guide — but it is an efficiency, not a principle, and glass is where it is most often worth breaking.

Why did my candle jar crack at the end of the burn and not at the start?
Because the end of the burn is the hardest moment for the glass. Three things happen at once: the flame is at its closest to the base, the base is usually the thickest part of the jar and therefore develops the largest temperature difference across it, and the remaining wax — which had been absorbing and spreading the heat — has been consumed. The glass is taking more heat, in a smaller area, with nothing left to buffer it. That is the whole reason for the 10 mm stop line, and the reason a test jar must be burned past it deliberately so that you find out in your workshop rather than in a customer's home.
Can I use ordinary food or pickle jars for candles?
Sometimes, but never without testing. Food-packaging glass is designed and annealed for internal pressure, a cap seal and one brief near-uniform hot-fill cycle — not for forty sessions of localised heating from a flame inside it. "Food-safe" describes what will not leach into the contents; it says nothing about thermal cycling. Is thicker glass safer for candles?
No — and this is the most expensive misconception in container buying. Glass is a poor heat conductor, so thickness is the distance over which a temperature gradient builds up. A thicker wall means the inner face runs hotter relative to the cooler outer face, which means a larger temperature difference and more tensile stress on the outside surface, which is where cracks start. Thick glass also stores more heat between burns. What you want is glass that is even in thickness and properly annealed, not glass that is heavy.
Which CSI glass jar handles heat best?

Borosilicate has a much lower coefficient of thermal expansion than ordinary soda-lime container glass, so the same temperature difference across the wall produces far less stress. How many jars should I burn-test, and for how long?
Three jars per vessel-and-wick combination, burned all the way to the bottom. Use four-hour sessions with a full cool-down between them, on a trivet or tile, away from draughts, poured to your real production recipe. Three rather than one, because glass varies within a pack. Re-run the test whenever you change the wick size, the wax or the fragrance load, because all three change how much heat reaches the glass. Budget roughly a day and a half of unattended time — on a ₹70.80 jar that is about ₹212 of glass to validate a whole product line.
