How to Buy Soy Wax in Bulk for a Candle Business

Bulk starts with your pour calendar, not the wax page

The most expensive bulk orders are the ones placed from the product page. You see a 10 kg pack, you know 10 kg sounds serious, you buy four of them, and six weeks later you are pouring a grade you have not burn-tested at that fill weight while 14 kg sits in a cupboard in a Nagpur summer. Work the other way. A bulk order is arithmetic that starts at the far end: the date, the number of candles, the fill weight, and only then the kilograms.

Fill weight is the number most makers get wrong, because it is not the jar's stated capacity. A jar sold as a 200 ml container does not take 200 g of soy wax — wax is lighter than water, and you leave headroom below the rim. The only reliable way to find your fill weight is to pour one jar the way you actually pour it, let it set, and weigh the difference. Do that once per jar in your range and write the number on the shelf label. Every bulk order you ever place will use it.

The second number is the allowance. Wax that leaves the pack does not all reach a jar: a film stays in the pitcher, you top up sink holes, you pour two test candles per fragrance, and somebody spills. This series plans with 5% — a general planning figure, not a measured CSI one, and yours may be higher if you pour small jars or run many fragrances in a batch. Measure it for one month by weighing what you buy against what you actually fill, and then use your own number.

What CSI actually publishes: the largest pack of every soy grade

There is no hidden trade portal. The buy sizes on each product page are the buy sizes, and for a first bulk order the honest advice is to stay inside them: you get the published price, the published specifications and a normal checkout with an invoice at the end. Above 10 kg of a single grade in one consignment, the sensible route is a WhatsApp message rather than nine separate line items in a cart.

Two operational notes before you build an order from that table. First, check the per-kilogram rate on each pack size of the grade you have chosen before you mix sizes — the rates are printed on the product page and they are not always identical across the ladder. Second, stock depth is part of the specification when you are buying in quantity: a grade with dozens of 10 kg packs behind it will refill differently from one where the largest size is down to single units. If a season depends on a grade, ask what is coming and when before you commit a pour calendar to it.

How to ask for a bulk quote so you get a useful answer

Bulk pricing above the published packs is quoted, not listed, and a quote is only as good as the question. The message that gets a same-conversation answer contains the grade, the quantity, the delivery pincode, your GST number, the documentation you need and the date you must pour by. The message that gets a follow-up question contains none of those, and now you are two days into a season you have not started.

Two things a supplier cannot tell you on WhatsApp, and you should not ask them to guess at: exactly what your courier will charge before they have your pincode and weight, and whether a grade will behave in your jar. The first needs the consignment defined; the second needs your own burn test. GST invoicing, MSDS and IFRA: settle the paperwork before you pay

Listed prices on CSI product pages are inclusive of taxes — the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page states this plainly. That is a consumer-facing price, and it is the right price for a maker who is not registered. If you are registered, the number that matters is on the invoice, not the product page: give your GSTIN with the order and ask for the invoice to be raised against it, so that ₹31,966.20 of wax lands in your books as a business input with your registration on the document. Retro-fitting a GST number to an invoice already raised is an amendment, and amendments take longer than typing the number in the first message.

MSDS and IFRA documentation is available on request through WhatsApp. You do not need it to pour a candle, and most home makers never ask. You do need it the first time a marketplace asks for a safety data sheet before listing, a corporate gifting client's procurement team sends a vendor form, a courier asks what is in the box, or an export consignment needs a file. Ask at quote stage: the request costs nothing, and the documents arrive with the order instead of during a deadline.

Consolidate: one consignment beats five

This is the part of bulk buying that actually saves money for most Indian makers, and it has nothing to do with the wax rate. Freight on a consignment is a function of weight, distance and handling, and handling is largely fixed per consignment. Five orders placed across a month — wax in the first week, oil when a fragrance runs out, wicks when you notice, jars when the design is signed off — carry five sets of that fixed element. The same materials on one order carry one. Nothing about the products changes; only the number of times something is picked, packed and moved.

We should be straight about this, because two of our own published reviews say it. One customer writes that the products are premium but “the delivery charges are very high which is restricting me to purchase more”; another asks the team to work on “the pricing and delivery timelines”. Those are real reviews on a supplier's own page and they are fair. CSI does not publish a freight table, a free-shipping threshold or a delivery-time promise, and this page will not invent one. What is within your control is the number of consignments you pay for. Plan the season, order once, and ask for the freight figure to your pincode in the same WhatsApp message as the rate.

The thirty-minute check when the consignment arrives

A bulk consignment is the last moment at which a problem is somebody else's. Once the packs are open, decanted and half-poured, the conversation is harder for everyone. So treat the delivery as a process with an output: a goods-inward note that says what arrived, in what condition, on what date, and which of your batch codes it will feed. It takes about thirty minutes for a twenty-three-pack consignment and it is the record your batch documentation will point back to for the next six months.

Storing 60 kg of soy wax through an Indian year

The product pages are specific where they can be: both CSI 464 and CSI 468 state a shelf life of 60 months in cool, dry storage, the CSI 464 page adds to store away from sunlight and moisture, and the CSI 468 page adds to keep it sealed. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page does not publish a shelf life, so we will not quote one for it — ask on WhatsApp if you are planning storage around that grade specifically.

Five years is far longer than any candle business will hold a pack, which tells you the real constraint is not the wax's age. It is the room. A Delhi or Ahmedabad workshop hits 40°C and above through May and June; a top-floor room under a concrete slab is hotter still. Soy in a sealed bag does not spoil at those temperatures, but flakes soften and cake into a block, which is a nuisance rather than a defect — a caked pack still melts and pours normally, it just will not scoop. Chunks handle heat with fewer complaints than flakes for the same reason a lump of sugar handles it better than caster sugar.

Monsoon is the one that matters. In Mumbai, Kochi and Kolkata, an unsealed pack in a humid room takes on moisture at the surface, and moisture in wax shows up later as spitting when you melt and as poor adhesion at the glass. This is why every one of those pages says sealed and dry. A bulk order multiplies the exposure: one open 1 kg pack is a small mistake, and six open 10 kg packs is your season.

A worked bulk order: 300 candles for Diwali 2026

Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November 2026. Soy container candles want 14 to 21 days of cure before they smell the way you intend them to, and gifting stock has to reach a customer before the festival rather than during it. Work backwards: dispatch in the first week of November, cure from mid-October, pour by about mid-October, materials in hand a week before that. Today is 11 September 2026, which makes this a comfortable timetable and makes the order this month's job rather than next month's crisis.

The plan: 300 candles, 200 g of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 each, Woody Oud at 8% of wax weight — comfortably inside the 10% the CSI 464 page states as its maximum — one Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) per jar, and a 200 ml Salsa glass jar with a lug cap. Wax in the candles is 60 kg; the order is 63 kg. Oil at 8% of 60 kg is 4.8 kg, bought as five 1 kg bottles, which leaves 200 g for test pours and top-ups.

Two honest observations about that table. The fragrance oil is 34.7% of the material cost and the wax is 49.0%, which means the grade you agonise over is not where the money is going — a point worth remembering the next time a cheaper wax looks like the saving. And every figure assumes you pour all 300 successfully. If you scrap ten jars because the wick was wrong, you have not lost ten candles, you have lost ₹2,174.74 of materials and a pour day you needed for something else. That is the argument for buying one 1 kg trial pack in September and testing it properly, rather than discovering the problem in 63 kg.

If the oil changes, the arithmetic changes more than most people expect. Citrus Lemon Fragrance Oil at 1 kg pricing is ₹2.83 per gram against Woody Oud's ₹4.53. Five kilograms of Citrus Lemon is ₹14,160.00 against ₹22,656.00 for Woody Oud — a difference of ₹8,496.00 on a single consignment, which is more than the gap between any two soy grades at this quantity. Neither oil is the right answer on price alone, and a citrus and an oud are not selling to the same customer. The point is that on a bulk order the fragrance line moves in thousands, so decide the oil, test it, and only then fix the wax quantity around it.
