How to Choose Soy Wax for Candle Making

Does a 13% fragrance ceiling make a soy wax better? Only if your oil’s page allows more than 10% and your cured burn test needs it. Moving from 10% to 13% in a 200 g candle adds ₹48.32 of materials, 62% of it extra oil.
How much does a proper soy wax test cost? For three 150 g test jars: three 500 g trial packs (₹884.00), a 100 gm oil, a 10-pack of jars and wicks — ₹2,387.00 out of pocket, of which about ₹821.10 is used; the rest carries over.
How long should I test before choosing? About three weeks: day 1 top, day 2 adhesion, day 7 frosting and cold throw, day 14 and day 21 burns. The Chunks page asks for at least 48 hours’ cure, ideally one to two weeks, before burn testing.
The six decisions, in the order that saves money
Choosing a soy wax feels like one decision. It is six, and the order matters because each one is cheaper to answer than the next. Deciding what you are making costs nothing. Reading a fragrance oil page costs two minutes. Pricing a candle takes a calculator. A jar test costs real wax, real oil and three weeks. If you start with the jar test — buying whatever a video recommended and pouring it — you pay the most expensive price for information you could have had free.
The method below narrows any list of soy waxes, from any supplier, to two or three finalists on paper, then lets a controlled three-jar test pick between them. It deliberately does not end with “the best soy wax”, because there is no such thing without your format, your oil, your city, your volume and your price. What it gives you instead is a decision you can defend and repeat when you reorder, change a scent or move into a new season.

Steps 1 to 5 are filters: they remove options. Step 6 is a contest: it ranks what survives. Step 1: decide the format before you look at a single wax
Format is the first filter because it removes whole families at once. Soy waxes are formulated for a job: container waxes are soft enough to stay bonded to glass as they cool; pillar waxes are firmer and shrink slightly so a candle slides out of its mould; dessert or whipped waxes hold a piped shape. In general candle-making practice, most “this wax is bad” complaints from new makers trace back to the right wax in the wrong format.
Write your format down as specifically as you can: not “candles” but “150 g scented candles in clear glass jars with lids”, or “7 cm pillars from silicone moulds”, or “heart-shaped wax melts in clamshells”. If you sell more than one format, run this method once per format. Trying to find one wax for jars, pillars and melts is how makers end up with a compromise that is second-best at everything.

Two honest gaps show up at this step. First, CSI does not publish a soy grade for wax melts. Several CSI oil pages give melt loads well above their candle ranges — Japanese Cherry Blossom says 10–18% for wax melts, Lavender 10–15% — and both reach above the highest published CSI soy ceiling of 13%. The lower figure governs, so a melt formula cannot be planned from the pages alone. Second, only the pillar and dessert formats have a single obvious candidate, which means the real choosing happens in container candles, where most Indian makers work.

Step 2: match the fragrance headroom to the oil you will actually pour
Every CSI soy page that publishes a fragrance ceiling states it as a percentage of wax weight: 200 g of wax at 10% takes 20 g of oil. The ceiling is the wax manufacturer’s stated formulation maximum — the most oil the wax is formulated to hold — not a target. Many oil pages state their own candle range. Your working maximum is the lower of the two, and step 2 is simply writing that number down for each candidate wax.
Start from the oil, not the wax. List the one to three scents that will make most of your sales and look up each oil’s stated candle range. Then decide the load you expect to pour — most makers start at 8% of wax weight, which the Chunks page calls its “starting point”, and move up only if a cured burn test is weak. Only then check which waxes can hold that load.

Headroom has a price, and most of it is not the wax. Take a 200 g candle with Japanese Cherry Blossom at the 500 gm rate (₹5.00/g). At 10% in CSI 464 the oil costs ₹100.00; at 13% in Chunks it costs ₹130.00. Add the wax difference at the 1 kg packs — ₹18.32 — and the move from 10% to 13% adds ₹48.32 of materials per candle, 62% of it extra oil. Across 100 candles that is ₹4,832.00. Pay it when a cured burn test shows the scent needs it, not because the label allows it.
For each wax on your shortlist, note the working maximum (the lower of wax and oil ceilings) and your planned load. A wax passes step 2 when the working maximum is at or above the planned load with a little room to adjust after the first burn test — in general practice, about 1–2 percentage points. A wax that can only just reach your planned load leaves you nowhere to go if the cured candle is weak.
One more reason to start from the oil: vanillin. Oils with vanilla or caramel base notes — the Roasted Coffee and Dark Vanilla pages say so explicitly, and Cinnamon Vanilla lists vanillin content — can warm or yellow white wax over time. That does not remove a wax at step 2, but if your range is gourmand and your jars are clear, note it now; it changes how you score finish in the jar test. Fragrances least likely to discolour white wax lists the safer options. Step 3: account for where the candle is poured, stored, shipped and burned
Climate is a filter on paper and a test in the jar. On paper, it mostly filters format and packaging rather than grade, because no CSI soy page publishes a heat-resistance or transit rating. The only published melting point in the range is CSI 468’s 50–53°C; the other grades do not publish one, so you cannot rank soy waxes for heat from the pages. What you can do is write down the conditions each candle will meet and make sure step 6 tests for them.

The practical effect is that step 3 rarely removes a container grade, but it decides what you will look for in the jars. A maker in Kochi scores adhesion and frosting after two humid weeks. A maker dispatching from Jaipur in May adds a warm-room hold to the test. Both write that into the worksheet before pouring, so the test answers the question that matters in their city. Storage belongs here too. The CSI 464 page asks for a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture and states a 60-month shelf life in cool, dry storage; the CSI 468 page adds “keep sealed when not in use”. Those shelf lives assume the storage. If your workspace is a monsoon-damp flat, choose pack sizes you will open and finish in weeks rather than a bag that sits open for months — which leads directly to step 4.
Step 4: size the batch and check the pack ladder
Work out how much wax you pour in a normal month, then check three things on each candidate’s product page: the pack sizes, whether the price per kilo actually falls as packs get bigger, and how deep the stock is in the size you will use. The last point is the one makers skip. A grade that suits you perfectly but has a handful of 5 kg packs in stock is a risk the week before a festive run.
To size a month, multiply candles by wax grams per candle and add a spillage allowance of your own (this page uses 5% as an illustrative figure). Forty 150 g candles a month is 6 kg of wax, about 6.3 kg with the allowance. Sixty 200 g candles is 12 kg, 12.6 kg with it.

Three conclusions come straight out of the ladder. First, for most CSI soy grades a bigger pack does not buy a lower price; its value is fewer parcels and fewer chances of running out mid-batch. Only CSI 468 and Natural Soy Pearl reward larger packs. Second, depth varies a lot: CSI 464 had dozens of packs at every size, while Chunks had 13 of its 5 kg and CSI 468 had 8, and Natural Soy Pearl had three 10 kg packs and one 50 kg. Third, the 500 g packs exist for testing — a small premium on CSI 464, none on Chunks or CSI 468.
For a maker using about 8 kg a month, the monthly wax bill on each candidate is simple to compare: 5 kg + three 1 kg packs of CSI 464 is ₹4,059.20; the same combination of Chunks is ₹4,792.00; of CSI 468, ₹5,135.00 — or ₹6,370.00 for a 10 kg pack with 2 kg carried into next month. Match pack size to storage, not just to price. A 10 kg bag that takes five months to use in a humid city is opened and closed a hundred times. Two 5 kg packs finished in five weeks each are fresher at the bottom of the bag. The price per kilo is the same for most grades, so the smaller, more frequent pack costs you nothing but an extra delivery charge — which is a real cost, and two CSI reviewers have said so; get a delivery quote to your pincode before you decide.
Equipment sets a quiet limit too. A Mini Electric Wax Melter holds 1 litre (₹2,360.00); one reviewer on that page asks for a 2–3 litre version, which tells you where small makers hit its ceiling. If a monthly run of 8 kg means eight separate melts, your practical batch size — and how consistent each batch is — belongs in this step as much as the pack size.
Step 5: price the candle, not the bag
The wax in one candle costs its price per kilo multiplied by your fill weight in kilos. Nothing else about the calculation is complicated, but doing it changes decisions: the wax is often a smaller share of the candle than the jar, and the gap between two container grades can be less than the price of the wick sticker you forget to count. Do it for your real fill weight, at the pack size you will actually buy.

Now put the wax inside a whole candle. Take a Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 g fill capacity, ₹94.40 each in a pack of 10), 150 g of wax, 12 g of Eucalyptus Spearmint at 8% (₹36.82 at the 1 kg rate) and one Eco C1 wick at ₹5.90. With CSI 464 at the 1 kg rate the materials come to ₹213.23; the wax is ₹76.11 of that (36%) and the jar ₹94.40 (44%). Swap in CSI 468 at the 1 kg rate and the candle rises by ₹21.39 to ₹234.62 — 10.0% more. Chunks gives ₹226.97, Eco Soy CSI 400 ₹196.97, and Premium Coconut Soy Wax ₹275.12; even the widest gap in the range, between the dearest and cheapest soy grades, is ₹78.15 per 150 g candle.
The budget filter works best as a ceiling. Decide what materials may cost per candle from your retail price — the 2026 candle pricing formula shows how to work back from a shelf price — then strike out any grade that breaks it with your jar and oil. For most container candles the wax will not be what breaks the ceiling. The jar, the oil load and your reject rate usually are. That is the honest reason to keep the wax decision in proportion: a difference of about twenty rupees per candle matters over a thousand candles and barely matters over twenty.
Step 6: the three-jar test that makes the final choice
By now you have two or three finalists. The jar test pours one candle of each in identical conditions so that the wax is the only thing that differs. It is not a lab trial, and it will not give you a universal ranking of soy waxes. It gives you a ranking for your jar, your oil, your wick and your room — which is the only ranking you need.
If only two waxes survived steps 1–5, use the third jar as a control: the cheapest container grade that passed steps 1, 3, 4 and 5, poured at the highest load it allows. The control answers the question makers most often skip — whether the dearer finalist is actually better in your candle, or just allowed to hold more oil.

For the worked example in the diagram — a Kochi maker pouring 150 g clear jars with Japanese Cherry Blossom at 12% — the round needs three 500 g trial packs (₹884.00), a 100 gm bottle of the oil (₹500.00), a 10-pack of the jars (₹944.00) and a 10-pack of C1 wicks (₹59.00): ₹2,387.00 out of pocket. The scoring worksheet: turn six steps into one number per wax
Copy the worksheet into a notebook or spreadsheet. First set a weight of 1–3 for each criterion according to what matters in your business: a D2C brand that ships gourmand scents in clear jars might weight frosting and heat hold at 3; a maker selling white candles in opaque ceramic at a weekend market might weight them at 1. Then score each finalist 0–3 using the rules in the table and the record sheet above. Multiply, add, compare. Format is a pass/fail gate, not a score: a wax in the wrong family is out, however well it would otherwise do.

The weights are hers: headroom 3 (her signature scent wants 12%), working figures 2, storage 1, packs 2, cost 2 against a ₹300.00 materials ceiling. The jar-test rows are deliberately left blank, because those scores can only come from her candles.

The paper totals are 26, 25 and 22 out of 30 — close enough that paper cannot choose, which is exactly the point. At her volume of 40 candles a month, Chunks and CSI 468 differ by only ₹228.00 of wax a month (₹11,206.00 against ₹11,434.00 in materials), so the jars will decide on finish, adhesion after a Kochi monsoon fortnight and hot throw. The control jar matters too: if the 10% CSI 464 candle throws nearly as well once cured, she has learned that her 12% plan was buying less than it cost, and she can re-score on that basis.
Keep the completed worksheet with your batch records. When you reorder, change a scent or move into summer, you are not starting again — you change one weight or one row, re-score, and decide whether the change is big enough to justify a new jar test. That is what a method buys you that a recommendation cannot.
