Quick answers — read this first
What is the single most effective way to prevent wet spots? Narrow the temperature gap between the glass and the wax at the moment of the pour, then cool slowly and evenly. Everything else on this page is a refinement of those two ideas. The cheapest way to make them invisible instead is a matte, frosted, coloured, ceramic or tin container — a White Matte Glass Jar is ₹70.80.

What temperature should I pour at to avoid wet spots? Inside the range the grade publishes. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks pours at 75–80°C, CSI 468 at 58–60°C, and CSI 464's page gives 80–90°C as the working range for melting and pouring. How long should candles stand before I move them? Leave the tray untouched for at least four hours, and leave lids off for 24 hours. Moving a jar while the plug is still setting breaks contact you cannot rebuild, and a lid trapped over warm wax puts moisture back on the glass.

Can I guarantee a batch with no wet spots at all? No, and no supplier should claim otherwise. A candle poured in Mumbai and opened in Ludhiana has seen swings you do not control. What a good protocol does is cut the rate a long way and move the remainder into containers where nobody can see them.

How do I prevent wet spots in my container candles?
By controlling two things — the temperature gap at first contact, and how evenly the candle cools afterwards — and by choosing a container that forgives whatever is left. In order of how much they return for the effort: pick the jar first, because matte, frosted, coloured, ceramic and metal containers make the effect invisible and a White Matte Glass Jar at ₹70.80 is ₹23.60 cheaper than a clear one. Then clean every jar with Isopropyl Alcohol Spray and let it flash off completely, because wax cannot bond through a fingerprint. Then close the temperature gap: bring jars into the pour room the day before so glass and air match, and warm them if the glass is genuinely cold. What prevention can and cannot do for you

Start with the honest ceiling. A protocol lowers the rate a long way. Nothing takes it to zero in a country this size.

A wet spot is a patch where shrinking soy released from the glass. Everything that follows in this guide is aimed at two outcomes: making release less likely in the first place, and making whatever release does happen invisible to the person holding the candle. Both are legitimate. Only one of them is usually attempted.

The limit is worth stating before the method. You control the room you pour in, the glass you pour into and the first day of the candle's life. You do not control the courier van that parks in the sun at Sanpada at two in the afternoon, the shop window in Jaipur that faces west, or the customer who puts a candle on top of a refrigerator. A candle poured perfectly can still show a patch six days later, and a supplier who tells you otherwise is selling certainty rather than wax.

Prevent what you can, hide what you cannot, and stop apologising for the rest.
A matte jar costs ₹23.60 less than a clear one and removes the complaint entirely. No process change on this page is that efficient.

Decision one: pick a container that forgives

Two makers with identical process can have completely different reject rates, purely because of what light does when it reaches their glass.

Clear glass displays every millimetre of the wall. Matte and frosted surfaces scatter light before it arrives, coloured and black glass absorb it, and ceramic and metal stop it entirely. The air gap is unchanged in all of them; only the visibility changes. For most Indian D2C ranges — festive gifting, corporate hampers, wedding favours — that is the whole problem solved, at a lower unit cost.

Shape matters too, and gets less attention. A straight-sided jar lets a shrinking plug settle evenly. A shouldered or tapered jar gives the plug somewhere to lever against, and a heavy base cools at a different rate from a thin wall, which sets up the uneven contraction that produces patches. If you are choosing new stock and have a free hand, straight-sided and even-walled is the easier candle to make.

There are good reasons to stay in clear glass and this guide is not an argument against it. A layered or embedded design has to be seen. A brand built on showing the wax cannot hide it. Some gifting buyers specify clear. If that is you, read the rest of this page twice — the protocol is what stands between you and a reject pile. If it is not you, the decision you just read is worth more than the next six sections put together.

The pour-day protocol, step by step

Eight steps. Six of them are free. The two that cost money cost less than one kilogram of fragrance oil.

The night before: bring the jars into the pour room. Unbox them, stand them upright on the bench where you will work and leave them. By morning the glass and the air are at the same temperature, which removes most of the gap you would otherwise have to manage with a heat source. This step costs nothing, needs no equipment and is the one most makers skip. In monsoon months it does a second job: jars that have already equalised do not fog when you pick them up.

Thirty minutes before: clean every jar, then let it dry. Spray the inside with Isopropyl Alcohol Spray and wipe with a lint-free cloth, then stand the jars upright and leave them until the smell has gone. Wax cannot bond through a fingerprint, packing dust or a film of anything, and alcohol that has not fully evaporated is itself a film. At an illustrative 2 ml a jar, the 1 Litre bottle at ₹520.00 works out to ₹1.04 a jar against ₹5.11 from the 150 ML bottle — a real saving once you are pouring by the tray.

Fifteen minutes before: warm the jars only if they need it. Touch the glass. If it feels cool against the back of your hand, warm it gently — a closed room with the fan off, a low oven that has not been preheated, or a hair dryer played across the outside — until it is warm to hold but never hotter than the wax. In a 34°C Ahmedabad afternoon skip this entirely; the room has already done it. In a Delhi January morning it is the most useful fifteen minutes of the session.

Melt, dose and stir to the grade's figures. Work to what the page publishes rather than to a number you read elsewhere. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks: melt to approximately 80–85°C, add fragrance at 80–90°C and stir slowly for two full minutes. Eco Soy CSI 400: add fragrance at 85°C, stir gently for two minutes, pour directly. Keep the load at or below the lower of the wax ceiling and the oil's own range — Roasted Coffee Fragrance Oil gives 6–10% for candles, CSI 464 gives up to 10%, so 10% is the ceiling for that pair and 8% is a sensible working figure.

Pour once, down the centre, at a steady rate. Use a spout you can control — the Steel Pouring Pitcher at ₹708.00 for the 600 ML holds a line where a saucepan does not. Aim at the middle of the jar, not the wall: wax that runs down the glass cools on the way and lays down a poorly bonded skin. Fill in one continuous pour where the grade is sold as a single-pour wax, and check the temperature with a Pen Thermometer at the moment of pouring rather than when you took the pitcher off the heat.

Set the wick and then stop touching it. Centre the wick with a Wick Centering Device at ₹118.00 or a Bamboo Wick Holder at ₹23.60 each in a set of five, and leave it. Nudging a wick at twenty minutes drags the skin of setting wax with it and starts a release patch at the wall.

Four hours, untouched, on the right surface. Wood, a folded towel or a corrugated sheet under the tray; not tile, marble or steel, which pull heat from the base and set up a ring of patches. Cover the tray loosely with an upturned carton to slow the air over the tops. Fan off, AC off or the tray moved out of the airflow. Do not lift a jar to look at it.

Lids at 24 hours, then cure. Leave lids off for a full day so the last of the heat and any moisture in the headspace can go. Then lid, label and box upright. Cure 14–21 days before you judge a candle, which is general practice for soy containers; the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for 48 hours minimum and ideally one to two weeks before burn testing.

Pouring down the side of the jar to avoid splashing the wick. It feels careful and it is the opposite. Wax running down the wall loses heat before it reaches the bottom and lays a cool, poorly bonded film against the glass exactly where you will later see patches. Pour at the centre and let the wax find the wall from underneath, at full temperature.

The four hours that decide how the jar looks

Almost everything you can still get wrong after the pour happens in the first four hours, and all of it is free to get right.

Once wax is in the jar, the only remaining variable is how heat leaves it. Even, slow cooling lets the whole plug contract together while it is still soft enough to stay in contact with the wall. Uneven or fast cooling sets one region hard while the rest is still moving, and the moving part pulls away from the set part. Every rule below is a way of making the heat leave evenly.

Putting jars in a refrigerator or in front of the AC to set them faster. This is the fastest known way to manufacture wet spots, and it usually produces cracks and sunken tops at the same time. Chilled glass sets the outer wax instantly while the core is still liquid; the core then shrinks against a shell that has already stopped moving. If you need candles set faster, pour earlier in the day, not colder.
THE CARTON TRICK
Keep one clean carton the size of your pour tray and turn it upside down over the jars for the first four hours. It costs nothing, it slows the air over the tops, it evens out the difference between the jars at the edge and the jars in the middle, and it stops anyone in the studio moving a jar to look at it. Makers who adopt one habit from this page usually adopt this one, because the difference across a tray is visible on the first batch.

Cure, storage and the courier: keeping what you gained

Clean jars leaving the tray is half the job. Clean jars arriving at a customer in Guwahati is the other half.

A candle continues to respond to temperature for as long as it exists. The plug is bonded to the glass at a few points and floating free at others, and every warm-cool cycle works on that boundary. This is why a maker can be certain nothing left the studio spotted and a customer can be equally certain it arrived that way. Both are usually telling the truth.

Two honest notes about the parts you cannot control. The first is that courier interiors in an Indian summer get far hotter than the air outside, and no packing material available to a small maker changes that — insulation slows the rise, it does not prevent it. The second is cost. Real CSI customers have said in their reviews that delivery charges are high enough to limit how much they order, and one of those reviews is on this page. Shipping insulated packaging adds weight and therefore adds cost, so this is a judgement call: for a ₹237.99 matte-jar candle, heavy protective packing is usually not worth it, and for a clear-glass gifting order it usually is.

There is also a simple product answer for shipped orders that is worth considering before you engineer a packing solution. If a line exists in both clear and matte, ship the matte version and keep the clear version for local pickup, studio sales and exhibition stalls where you control the handling. The candle is the same. The risk is not.

One scheduling note that follows from the table. If your range includes both a clear-glass line and a matte line, build the production calendar around the weather: clear glass in October and the cooler, stable months; matte and tin through the monsoon and the deep winter. It costs nothing, it uses the seasons instead of fighting them, and it is invisible to the customer.

Find your own pour window with a nine-jar trial

Published ranges are ranges for a reason. Your room, your jar and your grade have one best point inside them, and nine jars will find it.

The grid is three jar states against three pour temperatures, one jar in each cell, poured from a single melt so that the wax, the oil, the load and the wick are identical everywhere. Use clear glass for the trial even if you sell in matte: you are trying to see the fault, not hide it. Keep a note card under each jar.

Score each jar three times — at 24 hours, at 72 hours and at day 14 — with two numbers: how many separate patches you can count, and the longest dimension of the biggest one in millimetres. Photograph every jar at every reading, in daylight, against white paper. Two numbers and a photograph beat any amount of remembering.

Cost, at the series unit of 200 g of wax plus 16 g of fragrance oil at 8% of wax weight: with CSI 464, Roasted Coffee Fragrance Oil at 1 kg pricing and one Eco Candle Wicks C1, a candle is ₹167.19 before the jar, ₹237.99 in a matte jar and ₹261.59 in a clear one. Nine clear-glass trial jars are ₹2,354.29 of materials, and every one of them is a saleable candle at the end of the fortnight. That is the cheapest process knowledge you will ever buy.

Running the trial with a different oil, wick or jar in each cell. The moment two things change between jars you have learnt nothing you can repeat. One melt, one oil, one load, one wick, one jar model, one room — and exactly two variables on the grid. If you want to test the oil or the grade as well, that is a second trial, not a bigger one.

Read the result as a window rather than a point. If jars 5, 6, 8 and 9 are all clean at day 14, your answer is the middle-to-top of the range with an acclimatised jar, and you now have room to move on a cold morning. If only jar 6 is clean, your process is sitting on a knife edge and something else — the surface under the tray, the AC, the jar shape — is eating your margin for error.

If your wax temperature is the thing that drifts, a Mini Electric Wax Melter at ₹2,360.00 holds a melt steadier than a pan on a hob, which matters most in a cold room where the pitcher loses heat between the first jar and the last.

Two things deliberately not on that list. An additive is not there because it is not a fix for a thermal problem: the Vybar Additive page suggests 0.5–2% of wax weight and the lower end, 0.5–1%, for soy, and it is worth a controlled trial once your process is stable — but Eco Soy CSI 400 is sold as needing no additives, and reaching for one before you have fixed the temperature gap buys you a more expensive version of the same jar. A hot air gun is not there either — CSI lists one at ₹531.00 but stock is low, and reflowing a top after the fact is a rescue technique rather than prevention.

Frequently asked questions

How do I stop wet spots in my candle jars?
Narrow the temperature gap at the pour and cool slowly and evenly: acclimatise jars overnight, wipe them with alcohol and let them dry, warm them if the glass is cold, pour inside the grade's stated range down the centre of the jar, then leave the tray untouched for four hours on wood with no fan or AC draught. Lids at 24 hours, cure 14–21 days.
Does preheating jars prevent wet spots?
It helps when the glass is genuinely colder than the wax — a north-Indian winter morning, an AC studio, or a low-pour grade like CSI 468 at 58–60°C. It does nothing useful when jars have been sitting in a 34°C room all afternoon. Warm to hold is the target, never hotter than the wax.
What pour temperature prevents wet spots in soy wax?
The one your grade publishes, found precisely with a nine-jar trial. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks gives 75–80°C, CSI 468 gives 58–60°C and CSI 464's page gives 80–90°C as the working range for melting and pouring. Pouring hotter than the stated range to fix a cold jar trades one fault for another.
Which jars hide wet spots best?
Matte, frosted, coloured, ceramic and metal. A White Matte Glass Jar at ₹70.80 hides them completely and costs ₹23.60 less than a Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid at ₹94.40. Tin Containers at ₹70.80 show nothing, though metal cools quickly, so slow the tray down.
Will an additive like Vybar prevent wet spots?
