Before development starts you need three documents: a brief that fixes weight, oil, jar and load; a small development kit that tests wax, wick and load in the real jar; and a production list written only after the kit passes.
₹6,054.22
the 20-candle CSI development kit for a 200 g lavender candle in the White Matte jar · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
What do I need before development? A brief and a kit. The brief: 200 g, Lavender at 8% (16 g oil + 184 g wax), the White Matte jar, soy wax. The kit: 20 candles testing 2 waxes, 3 wicks and an 8% → 10% load step.

What does the kit cost? ₹6,054.22 in CSI materials (wax, Lavender, three wick types, 20 jars, stickers), or ₹6,880.22 with a scale, thermometer and centring devices.

Which jar is "frosted"? The White Matte Glass Jar, ₹70.80 each in packs of 5 or 10. Its fill weight is not published — confirm 200 g with a weighed test pour first.

What about production? After the kit: 50 candles with labelled allowances cost ₹15,622.02 in Chunks or ₹14,667.02 in CSI 464. See the production list.
The short answer
Answer: Write a brief (200 g, Lavender 8%, White Matte jar, soy), then buy a 20-candle development kit: Chunks and CSI 464, Eco Thin C1, Thick C2 and Cotton Braided wicks, Lavender for an 8% → 10% step — ₹6,054.22 at CSI.
Why: CSI publishes no wick-per-diameter chart, no jar fill for the White Matte jar and no throw data for any oil, so wax, wick and load must be tested in the real jar before production quantities are bought.
Method: Brief → fill check → stage A wick screen at 8% → stage B load step with the winning wick → full-life burn → production list with allowances in order → round to real packs. The general BOM method.
From a product brief to a CSI purchase: three documents, in order Example: 200 g luxury lavender soy candle in frosted (white matte) glass · 8% working load 1 · PRODUCT BRIEF decided before buying 200 g finished weight Lavender, 8% working load White Matte Glass Jar Soy container wax Fill: weigh a test pour ₹0 · paper 2 · DEVELOPMENT KIT the variables you test 20 candles in the real jar 2 waxes: Chunks, CSI 464 3 wicks: Thin, Thick, Cotton Load step 8% → 10% Wax 500 g / 1 kg bags ₹6,054.22 3 · PRODUCTION LIST only after the kit passes 50 candles + 2 QC 3% rejects · 5% pour loss 2% glass breakage Rounded to real packs Leftovers valued in ₹ ₹15,622.02 Buy now: the brief costs nothing and the kit is small. Buy after the kit passes: production wax, oil and the winning wick. Jars and stickers are the same whichever wax wins, so they can be ordered earlier.
The three documents in order. The brief fixes what is decided and costs nothing; the development kit tests only the open lines — wax, wick and load — in the real jar (₹6,054.22); the production list is written after the kit passes, with allowances applied in order and rounded to real CSI packs (₹15,622.02 for the example 50-candle run in Chunks).
Straight answer
I want to make a 200 g luxury lavender soy candle in frosted glass — what exact raw materials do I need before starting development?
You need a written brief and a 20-candle development kit — not production quantities. The brief: 200 g finished weight, Lavender at an 8% working load (16 g oil + 184 g wax), the White Matte Glass Jar (CSI's frosted-look option; fill not published, so confirm 200 g with a weighed pour), undyed soy wax. The kit tests what is still open: two waxes (Chunks, up to 13%, and CSI 464, up to 10%), three wicks (Eco Thin C1, Thick C2, Cotton Braided) and an 8% → 10% load step. Buy 4 × 500 g of Chunks, 2 × 1 kg of CSI 464, 3 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g + 1 × 15 g of Lavender, wicks in their smallest packs and 20 jars: ₹6,054.22. Production wax, oil and wick wait until the kit passes; the 50-candle run then costs ₹15,622.02 in Chunks.
One line: fix what you have decided, test what you have not, and buy production quantities only of what has passed.
The development kit on this page — 20 test candles of 200 g in the White Matte Glass Jar, two soy waxes, three wick candidates and Lavender at 8% and 10% — costs ₹6,054.22 in CSI materials. Start with the oil: Lavender Fragrance Oil from ₹105.02 for 15 g, ₹540.00 for 100 g.

Write the product brief before you buy anything

A product idea is a sentence. A product brief is a list of numbers. Only the second one can be turned into a shopping list.

"A 200 g luxury lavender soy candle in frosted glass" sounds specific, but four of its words still hide decisions. 200 g — of what: wax, or the finished candle? Luxury — does that mean a higher fragrance load, a dearer oil, a heavier jar, or packaging? Soy — which soy wax, at what ceiling? Frosted glass — which jar, and does it actually hold 200 g at the fill line you want? Until each of those is a number or a named product, any order you place is a guess, and guesses are expensive in the one material that cannot be returned once opened: fragrance oil.

So the first document is a one-page product brief. It fixes what is decided and names what is still a variable. This page uses CSI's convention throughout: fragrance load is a share of the finished candle weight, so a 200 g candle at an 8% working load is 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax. The 8% is a working assumption, not a recommendation for lavender in particular — CSI publishes no per-oil dosage or throw data, so the load is one of the things the development kit tests.

Fragrance load 8% working load (16 g oil); 10% step (20 g oil) TEST Wax maker's ceiling: Chunks 13%, CSI 464 10%

Cure checkpoints 48 hours, 7 days, 14 days (labelled examples) Fixed Chunks page: at least 48 hours, ideally 1–2 weeks

Two lines in that brief deserve a second look. The jar is fixed but its fill is not: CSI does not publish the fill weight of the White Matte Glass Jar, so the 200 g target has to be confirmed by weighing before the kit is poured (the method is two sections down). And colour is deliberately left out. A pastel or deep colour is a third variable that interacts with both wick and load — the pastel-pink rose post and the black oud post build that into their kits. A white candle in a white matte jar is the cleanest first test.

The CSI principle
Fix what you have decided. Test what you have not. Buy production quantities only of what has passed.
Every number on this page follows from that sentence: the brief fixes four lines, the kit tests three, and the production list is written only after the kit.

Confirm the frosted jar actually holds 200 g

The most expensive mistake in a 200 g product is a jar that holds 185 g.

Frosted glass, in CSI's range, means the White Matte Glass Jar: ₹354.00 for 5 or ₹708.00 for 10, ₹70.80 a jar either way. Its fill weight is not published, and neither is its internal diameter. That matters twice. If the jar holds less than 200 g at a sensible fill line, every number below changes and the label is wrong. And the wick choice depends on the melt-pool diameter, which depends on the jar's internal diameter — which is why three wick candidates go into the kit rather than one.

1
Mark the fill line you wantDecide where the candle surface should sit — commonly a little below the shoulder so the flame has headroom. Mark it with a pen on tape, on one jar.
2
Weigh water to that lineTare the empty jar on a scale (CSI Weighing Scale, ₹354.00), fill with water to the mark and read the grams. Water is close to 1 g per ml, so the reading is roughly the volume to your fill line.
3
Convert with a labelled wax factorSolid soy wax is lighter than water. A commonly used approximation is about 0.86–0.90 g of wax per ml — an assumption, varying by wax and temperature. Example only: if your water reading were 230 g, the wax-and-oil fill would be roughly 197.8 g–207.0 g.
4
Confirm with one weighed wax pourPour one candle of the real wax-and-oil mix to the line, let it set, and weigh it minus the jar. That number — not the water estimate — is your finished weight. If it is not 200 g, change the brief (fill line or label weight) before you pour the kit.
Pour the fill-check candle from the kit, not on top of it
The weighed wax pour can be the first candle of the development kit, so it costs nothing extra. Use it as the shelf candle for one of the waxes, and record its weight on the base.

The development kit: what goes in, and why

The development kit exists to answer three open lines in the brief — wax, wick and load — with as few candles as possible. Testing every combination at once (2 waxes × 3 wicks × 2 loads, three candles each) would take 36 candles. A two-stage kit does it in 20: first a wick screen at 8% in both waxes, then a load step to 10% using only the wick that passed. That is the same method the product-idea-to-BOM post generalises for any candle.

Stage Wax Load Wick Candles Wax per candle Oil per candle

Shelf One per wax 8% Winner of stage A 1 + 1 184 g 16 g
Total 20 1,828 g per wax 344 g in all

Stage A uses two candles per wax–wick pair because its job is elimination, not proof: a wick that tunnels badly or flares and soots in both of its candles is out. Stage B then uses three candles per wax at the 10% step, which is the commonly used working minimum for a comparison you intend to act on. CSI 464's page states a fragrance load of up to 10%, so its stage-B candles sit exactly at its published ceiling; Luxury Soy Wax Chunks' page states up to 13%, so Chunks has headroom above the step. Neither ceiling is a target — the vanilla hot-throw post shows when a load ladder past 10% is worth buying.

Three pack details are worth knowing before you click. Chunks are cheapest here as four 500 g bags (₹299.00 each, ₹598.00 a kilo), a rupee a kilo less than the 1 kg bag; CSI 464 runs the other way, two 1 kg bags at ₹507.40 beat four 500 g bags at ₹260.00. The oil is bought as 3 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g + 1 × 15 g because Lavender's 50 g and 100 g are both ₹5.40 a gram while its 15 g is ₹7.00 a gram — the 15 g only closes a small gap. And the Eco Thin C1 10-pack is out of stock on the 4 October re-check, so the smallest Thin pack is 20 at ₹118.00.

The 8 wicks for stage B and the shelf candles are deliberately not in the kit as a separate line: they come out of the leftover wicks of whichever type wins stage A. If Eco Thin C1 wins, the 20-pack has 16 left — enough. If Thick C2 or Cotton Braided wins, each has 6 left, so you top up after stage A with one more 10-pack (₹94.40 or ₹120.00). Buying it in advance would mean buying production-style quantities of two wicks that will lose.

What the kit needs that you might not have
Tool Why it is on the list Price
Candle Making Weighing Scale Every number on this page is a weight — oil to 0.1 g, candles before and after burns ₹354.00
Pen Thermometer Chunks' page states oil addition at 80–90°C and pour at 75–80°C; CSI 464's page gives an 80–90°C range ₹354.00
Wick Centering Device (5) An off-centre wick ruins a wick screen; five centre five candles at a time ₹118.00
Kit + tools ₹6,880.22
The shortcut: "buy one wick, the one everyone uses." CSI does not publish wick sizes per jar diameter, and the White Matte jar's internal diameter is not published either, so there is no chart to look up. A single-wick kit either passes by luck or sends you back for a second kit and another cure cycle. Fix: screen the three candidates together. The extra two wick types cost ₹214.40 — less than one finished candle's materials at retail.

Running the kit: what to record so the production list writes itself

A development kit is only worth its price if the results can be read by someone else. Number every candle on the base (wax, wick, load, pour date), weigh it to 0.1 g, and keep one sheet per stage. The test conventions below are labelled working practice, not a standard; the oud large-room post adds a room-size throw protocol, and the three-wick 500 g post shows how much longer the same tests take in a bigger candle.

1
Pour stage A in one sessionTwelve candles, one lavender lot, both waxes handled to their own pages: Chunks' page states oil addition at 80–90°C and pour at 75–80°C in the spec table (its step list also shows 70–80°C); CSI 464's page gives an 80–90°C melt/pour working range. Same stirring time, same cooling shelf.
2
Cure to the same checkpointScore cold throw at 48 hours and 7 days (labelled checkpoints). Do not light any candle earlier because it looks ready — compare at the same cure age or you compare calendars, not waxes.
3
Burn in matched cycles of 3–4 hoursLight candles of the same wax together, spaced apart, away from draughts. Record melt-pool diameter and depth at the end of each cycle, time to a full melt pool, flame height against a ruler, mushrooming, soot and the jar-side reading at a fixed point.
4
Eliminate wicks, not waxesA wick is out if it fails a safety line (bigger flame, soot or hotter jar than the others) or never reaches a full pool. The wick that survives in each wax goes to stage B. It can be a different wick in each wax — that is a result, not a problem.
5
Pour stage B and the shelf candlesThree candles per wax at 10% (20 g oil, 180 g wax), plus one shelf candle per wax at 8% kept in your warmest storage spot. Score 8% against 10% blind, in the same room, at the same cure age.
6
Burn one candle per wax to the endLate tunnelling, a growing flame and a hot lower jar only show up in the last third of a candle. A wick that passes three cycles can still fail here.
Copy per burn cycle · one column per candle · CSI publishes no numeric safety limits
Stage A record sheet
Line How you record it Pass rule (yours to set)
Time to full melt pool Minutes from lighting Reaches the glass within your normal burn
Pool depth at 3–4 h Ruler, centre Not deeper than the other candidates
Flame height Ruler behind flame, mid-burn No worse than the other candidates
Mushrooming / soot 0–3 with photo 0–1
Jar-side reading Same point, same minute No hotter than the others; within your jar supplier's guidance
Hot throw, blind 0–5 at a fixed spot Recorded, not yet decisive in stage A
Weight before / after 0.1 g Consumption g/hour = loss ÷ hours

Safety is a knock-out, never a trade. CSI publishes no flame-height or jar-temperature limit; the acceptance line is "no worse than the other candidates, within your jar supplier's guidance and the recognised candle fire-safety standard you work to" (ASTM F2417 is a commonly cited US standard — read it for its own requirements). A wick that throws better but runs the jar hotter has failed, and more lavender will not buy it back.

The production list, written after the kit

Only now does the order get big. And only now does it get certain.

Once a wax, a wick and a load have passed, the brief becomes a bill of materials and the BOM becomes a purchase order. The example below is a first production run of 50 candles — a labelled example, not a forecast — at the 8% load, with Eco Thin C1 as the example winning wick. The allowance stack follows the series order: whole test candles first, then rejects, then pour loss on wax and oil only, then breakage on glass only, then rounding to real CSI packs. The 2 QC candles, 3% rejects, 5% pour loss and 2% breakage are labelled working assumptions; replace them with your own figures after the kit.

50 × 200 g · 8% · Lavender · per candle 184 g wax + 16 g oil · labelled allowances
The allowance stack, in order
Stage Candles Wax Oil Jars Wicks
Net requirement 50 candles 9,200.0 g 800.0 g 50 50
(1) + 2 test/burn candles 52 9,568.0 g 832.0 g 52 52
(2) ÷ (1 − 3%) rejects 53.61 9,863.9 g 857.7 g 53.61 53.61
(3) + 5% pour loss (wax and oil only) — 10,357.1 g 900.6 g no change no change
(4) + 2% breakage (containers only) — no change no change 55 no change

Note what does not stack. Pour loss is applied to wax and oil only — you do not lose 5% of a jar when you pour. Breakage is applied to glass only — wax does not break in transit. And the reject allowance is applied once, to consumables and jars alike, because a rejected candle uses a full set of everything. Applying a percentage twice, or rounding before adding allowances, is how a 50-candle order quietly becomes a 60-candle order. The 105-or-110-pieces post and the glass-versus-wax buffer post go deeper on both.

CSI subtotal ₹14,667.02

Read the two orders together and the wax decision is worth ₹955.00 on this run — real money, but smaller than the oil line, which is ₹4,885.02 either way. The oil is bought as 1 × 500 g + 4 × 100 g + 1 × 15 g for ₹4,885.02, cheaper than the 1 kg pack at ₹5,221.00 because the need is 900.6 g, just over 900 g. For the wax, 2 × 5 kg + 1 × 500 g of Chunks costs ₹6,289.00; twenty-one 500 g bags would be ₹6,279.00, ten rupees cheaper, but twenty-one bags to open, label and track. That is a real per-kilo quirk, and it is the kind the minimum-leftover post works through.

The shortcut that over-buys: "50 candles × 200 g = 10 kg of wax, plus some lavender." That treats the finished weight as pure wax and buys the oil on top. The candles hold 9,200 g of wax, not 10,000 g; the shortcut over-buys 800 g before any allowance. Fix: wax = candles × weight × (1 − load), then allowances in order, then packs. The 100 × 200 g lavender calculator runs the same arithmetic at twice the volume.

Buy now, buy after the kit: the split

The rule for the whole series is that production quantities of the wick — and of anything that a test could still change — are bought only after the test candles pass. Materials that are the same whichever candidate wins can be ordered early. For this product that gives a clean split.

The point of the split is not a rule about jars; it is to hold back anything a test can still change.

What one finished candle costs in materials

With the 5 kg Chunks rate (₹0.60/g), Lavender at its 1 kg rate (₹5.22/g), Eco Thin C1 at ₹5.90, the White Matte jar at ₹70.80 and one sticker at ₹2.50, the material cost of one 200 g candle is ₹272.95; with CSI 464 at ₹0.51/g it is ₹256.10. That excludes labour, packaging, freight and GST, and the lid, label and box above. At 10% load in Chunks it rises to ₹291.44: each extra point of load in a 200 g candle adds 2 g of lavender, ₹10.44.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. "Luxury" does not have to mean a dearer wax or a bigger oil pack from us. On this page the jar is the single biggest line after the oil, and the wax choice moves the candle by only ₹16.85. We publish no throw or performance data that would justify telling you Chunks makes a more luxurious candle than CSI 464 — if CSI 464 passes your kit at 8%, buy it. And do not buy Lavender in 1 kg for a 50-candle run: the 1 × 500 g + 4 × 100 g + 1 × 15 g mix costs ₹335.98 less and leaves 14.4 g spare.
Where luxury actually shows
If the brief says luxury, the levers a buyer notices are usually the jar, the lid, the label and a clean, full melt pool without soot — not a rupee difference in wax. Spend the development kit's effort on the pool. For a heavier or multi-wick luxury format, the three-wick 500 g post prices the extra testing.

Lavender Fragrance Oil
Lavender is near the top of CSI's best-selling sort. CSI publishes no throw or dosage data for it, so the load is tested, not assumed. Its 50 g and 100 g are both ₹5.40 a gram and the 1 kg is ₹5.22, so above 100 g the price per gram barely moves.

Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026. A kit poured this week can be cured to 14 days and burned through stage B with time to place the production order before the festive peak. Send us your brief — weight, oil, jar, run size — on WhatsApp and we will price the development kit and the production list together. Larger quantities are quoted on WhatsApp; no volume discount figure is published.

Which product brief in this cluster is yours

This page is the hub for the "product brief → exact raw-material list" cluster. Every post below starts from one product idea and ends in the same three documents — a brief, a priced development kit and a production list — but each one carries a different difficulty: an oil with no small pack, a dye that changes the wick, a jar CSI does not list, a format that needs three wicks.

The other three clusters in the series start from a different place. If you already know how many candles you need, the exact-quantity calculator cluster starts from 100 × 200 g lavender. If a customer order is driving the purchase, the large-order cluster starts from 500 wedding candles. If the budget is the fixed number, the budget cluster starts from ₹10,000. And once the formula is final, the formula-to-purchase-order cluster turns it into a 30-day production order.

A brief costs nothing, a kit costs a few thousand rupees, and a production order costs whatever the first two got wrong.

Changing one line of the brief? A different oil changes only the oil line and its pick card; a different jar changes the fill check, the wick screen and the jar line; a colour adds a dye ladder and moves the wick screen after it. Message the change on WhatsApp and we will re-price the kit.
Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A supplier could sell you production quantities on day one. This page tells you to buy a small kit first, to hold back the wax, oil and wick order until the kit passes, and not to buy Lavender in 1 kg for a 50-candle run because a smaller mix of packs costs less.

Wax prices are CSI live pricing, re-checked 1 October 2026. Oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 4 October 2026. Wick and jar prices are re-checked 4 October 2026; tool prices verified 10 September 2026. Candle splits, pack rounding, leftovers and per-candle costs are arithmetic shown to two decimals so you can check them.

The 8% load, the 10% step, two and three candles per cell, 3–4 hour burn cycles, cure checkpoints, the 5% pour-loss, 3% reject and 2% breakage allowances, the example wax factor and the example lid, label and box prices are labelled working assumptions, not standards. Frequently asked questions

What raw materials do I need to start making lavender soy candles?
Soy container wax, lavender fragrance oil, wicks, jars and wick stickers — plus a scale and thermometer. For development, buy small: wax in 500 g or 1 kg bags, Lavender from 15 g to 100 g, two or three wick types in their smallest packs and only as many jars as test candles. This page's kit is 20 candles for ₹6,054.22.
How much fragrance oil for a 200 g soy candle?
At an 8% working load, 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax (load is a share of the finished weight). At 10%, 20 g of oil and 180 g of wax. Stay inside the wax's published ceiling: Chunks 13%, CSI 464 10%.
What is a frosted candle jar called on CSI?
The White Matte Glass Jar, sold in packs of 5 (₹354.00) and 10 (₹708.00). Its fill weight and internal diameter are not published, so weigh a test pour before you rely on a 200 g label.
How many test candles before production?
This kit uses 20: a two-candle wick screen per wax–wick pair at 8%, three candles per wax at the 10% step, and one shelf candle per wax. Three candles per variant is a commonly used working minimum for a decision you will act on.
Which wick for a 200 g soy candle in a frosted jar?
No supplier chart can tell you for an unpublished internal diameter. Screen Eco Thin C1, Eco Thick C2 and Cotton Braided in the real jar, knock out any with a bigger flame, soot or hotter jar, and keep the one that reaches a full melt pool.
Should I buy wax in bulk before testing?
No. Wax is the material most likely to change after the kit, and CSI's container soy bags show little or no per-kilo break with size anyway (CSI 464 is flat; Chunks' 10 kg bag costs more per kilo than 5 kg). Buy the production bag after the kit passes.
Brief, kit, then production
Test the three open lines in the real jar. Then buy the production list once.
Lavender from ₹105.02 for 15 g, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks from ₹299.00, CSI 464 from ₹260.00, Eco wicks from ₹94.40, White Matte jars at ₹354.00 for 5. Send us your brief and we will price the kit and the production order together.

Non-price figures and assumptions: CSI convention: fragrance load is a share of the finished candle weight (200 g at 8% = 16 g oil + 184 g wax; at 10% = 20 g + 180 g). What CSI's product pages state (quoted, not CSI test results): Luxury Soy Wax Chunks — maximum fragrance load 13%, fragrance addition 80–90°C, pour 75–80°C in the spec table (the step list also shows 70–80°C), cure minimum 48 hours, ideally 1–2 weeks; Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 — fragrance load up to 10%, an 80–90°C melt/pour working range in the spec table, shelf life 60 months cool and dry; Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 — melting point 50–53°C, pour 58–60°C, fragrance load up to 13%, shelf life 60 months cool and dry; Natural Soy Pearl — no melt point, pour temperature, fragrance ceiling or shelf life published. The White Matte Glass Jar's fill weight and internal diameter are not published; the 0.86–0.90 g/ml wax factor and the 230 g water reading are labelled examples. Kit design, burn cycles, cure checkpoints, the 5% pour loss, 3% rejects, 2% breakage, 2 spare wicks per type and the 50-candle run are labelled working assumptions. Lid, label and box figures are examples, not CSI prices. CSI publishes no throw, dosage or wick-per-diameter data and no numeric safety limits; ASTM F2417 is named only as a commonly cited standard. Material costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
