Oud economics · 6% vs 10%
If 6% passes a proper burn test, the extra oud at 10% has to earn its place. Most of the time it does not.
₹5,120.00
extra Royal Oud per 100 candles of 200 g at 10% instead of 6%
Quick answers — read this first
Is there any reason to go above 6% if it works? Occasionally: a larger jar, a bigger room brief, or a burn test showing throw fading in the last third of the candle. Without a specific reason like that, stay at 6%.

How much more does 10% cost? In a 200 g candle, Woody Oud rises from ₹54.37 to ₹90.62 of oil, and Royal Oud from ₹76.80 to ₹128.00.

Could 6% look better later? Royal Oud's page states a 72–96 h cure because oud takes longer to express. A 6% candle tested early may improve, so test after the stated cure.

Can too much oud hurt the candle? Overloading can leave oil unbound in the wax, raise soot risk and change the wick you need. More is not automatically stronger.
The short answer
Short answer: If 6% passes a cured, full burn test, keep it; raise load only for a specific, tested reason.
Cost of 10%: Woody Oud +₹36.25, Royal Oud +₹51.20, White Royal Oud +₹64.82 of oil per 200 g candle versus 6%.
Test first: Burn 6% and 8% side by side after the full cure before committing to any increase.

The step from 6% to 10% adds between ₹36.25 and ₹64.82 of oil per candle across CSI's three ouds.
Straight answer
My Oud Fragrance Is Expensive and Performs Strongly at 6% — Is There Any Reason to Push It to 8% or 10% If Lower Loading Already Works?
Only for a specific reason you can test. Oud is a slow, dense base-note family, and CSI's oud pages give room to go up: Woody Oud states 6–10% in soy, and Royal Oud says to start at 6–8% and work up to 10%. But room to go up is not a reason to. In a 200 g candle, moving from 6% to 10% adds ₹36.25 of Woody Oud, ₹51.20 of Royal Oud or ₹64.82 of White Royal Oud per candle. Valid reasons are a larger jar or room brief, throw that fades late in the candle's life, or a blend that loses its oud character at 6%. Confirm 6% after the full cure first, then burn 6% against 8% before you buy the extra oil.
One line: if your oud works at 6%, every extra point is a cost that needs a tested reason.
Royal Oud is a perfume-grade concentrate; its page advises starting at 6–8% and working up to 10%, with a 72–96 h cure because oud takes longer to express.
View Royal Oud Fragrance Oil

Start from the fact that 6% already works

An oud candle that performs at 6% is not a candle that needs rescuing.

It is worth being precise about what performs strongly means, because the rest of this page depends on it. A good 6% result is one where the candle has had the full stated cure, the wick gives a clean pool to the wall, and several people in a closed room agree that the scent is clearly present at a reasonable distance across the burn. If your 6% candle has passed that kind of test, you are not guessing. You have a working formula.

The question then becomes commercial, not technical. You can almost certainly make the candle stronger with more oil, because oud pages give headroom. CSI Woody Oud states 6–10% in soy and 6–8% in paraffin. CSI Royal Oud's page says to start testing at 6–8% and work up, to a maximum of 10% in soy or paraffin. White Royal Oud and Dark Vanilla Oud both state 6–10%. The real question is whether stronger is better for your product, and whether it is worth the money.

One caution on timing. Royal Oud's page states a 72–96 h cure because oud takes longer to express. If you judged 6% before that point, test it again. An oud that seemed adequate at 48 h can open up noticeably later, which strengthens the case for staying low.

The rupee cost of each extra point

Using the series convention for a 200 g candle: 6% is 188 g wax + 12 g oil, 8% is 184 g + 16 g, and 10% is 180 g + 20 g. Per-gram prices come from each oil's 1 kg price: Woody Oud ₹4,531.20 ÷ 1000 = ₹4.5312, Royal Oud ₹6,400.00 ÷ 1000 = ₹6.40, White Royal Oud ₹8,103.00 ÷ 1000 = ₹8.103.

Load versus cost
Oil cost per 200 g candle, CSI oud range
Oil 6% (12 g) 8% (16 g) 10% (20 g) 6% → 10% per candle
Woody Oud ₹54.37 ₹72.50 ₹90.62 ₹90.62 − ₹54.37 = ₹36.25
Royal Oud ₹76.80 ₹102.40 ₹128.00 ₹128.00 − ₹76.80 = ₹51.20
White Royal Oud ₹97.24 ₹129.65 ₹162.06 ₹162.06 − ₹97.24 = ₹64.82

Scale that to a production run. The step from 6% to 10% adds 8 g of oil per candle, so 800 g per 100 candles. For Woody Oud that is 800 × ₹4.5312 = ₹3,624.96. For Royal Oud it is 800 × ₹6.40 = ₹5,120.00. For White Royal Oud it is 800 × ₹8.103 = ₹6,482.40. Every 100 candles.

There is a small offset. Each extra gram of oil replaces a gram of wax, so at 10% you use 8 g less wax per candle than at 6%. With CSI 464 at ₹507.40 per kg, that is 8 × ₹0.5074 = ₹4.06 back per candle. For Woody Oud the net extra is ₹36.25 − ₹4.06 = ₹32.19 per candle. The offset is real but small; it does not change the conclusion.

What it does to the purchase order

Load also changes how far each bottle goes, which matters for cash flow when the oil is expensive. One kilogram of oud fills 1,000 ÷ 12 = 83 whole candles at 6%, 1,000 ÷ 16 = 62 at 8%, and 1,000 ÷ 20 = 50 at 10%.

Purchase example
Woody Oud for 100 candles of 200 g
Load Oil needed Packs to buy Outlay
6% 100 × 12 g = 1,200 g 1 kg + 500 g ₹4,531.20 + ₹2,265.60 = ₹6,796.80
8% 100 × 16 g = 1,600 g 1 kg + 1 kg (400 g left over) ₹4,531.20 × 2 = ₹9,062.40
10% 100 × 20 g = 2,000 g 1 kg + 1 kg ₹4,531.20 × 2 = ₹9,062.40

At 6% the run needs one 1 kg pack and one 500 g pack. At either 8% or 10% it needs two 1 kg packs, an extra ₹9,062.40 − ₹6,796.80 = ₹2,265.60 in cash tied up before a single candle is sold. For Royal Oud, note that the 100 g pack was out of stock on the pull, so small top-ups for testing come from the 500 g pack at ₹3,300.00 (₹3,300.00 ÷ 500 = ₹6.60 per gram) rather than the 1 kg rate.

The legitimate reasons to push higher

There are situations where 8% or 10% is the right answer even though 6% works in your test jar. Each one is specific and testable.

A larger vessel or a bigger room brief. If the same oud is going into a wider jar or is being sold for large living spaces, the 6% result from a 200 g jar does not automatically transfer. Test the new format on its own terms.

Throw that fades late in the candle. Some makers find a candle strong in its first burns and weaker in the last third. If your logs show that, a modest step up, or a wick review, may be justified. Burn a test candle all the way down before assuming it.

Character, not strength. In blends, load can change which notes lead. If your oud reads as mostly spice or citrus at 6% and the dark woods only arrive at 8%, the higher load is buying the scent you are actually selling.

Customer feedback you can verify. If repeated, specific feedback says the candle is too quiet, and your own panel agrees, act on it. Anecdote alone is not enough.

What 10% can cost beyond the rupees

More oil changes the fuel, so the wick that was right at 6% may not be right at 10%. Heavier oud material travelling up the wick can increase carbon on the tip, and an overloaded candle can leave oil unbound in the wax, which shows as sweating or a greasy surface. As a general principle, overloading can also make a candle smell muddier rather than stronger, because the heavier notes crowd out the brighter opening.

A different oud can be cheaper than more oud

If the argument for 10% is really about richness rather than volume, compare oils before you compare loads. Woody Oud at 10% costs ₹90.62 of oil per 200 g candle. Royal Oud at 6% costs ₹76.80, which is ₹90.62 − ₹76.80 = ₹13.82 less, and it is a perfume-grade concentrate with a heart of oud, rose and cedarwood over sandalwood, ambergris and musk. A lower load of a denser oil may give you the depth you are after with less fuel for the wick to handle.

That is not a promise that Royal Oud will outperform Woody Oud in your jar. The two have different structures, and Woody Oud's citrus and spice top gives it a brighter opening that some ranges need. It is a reason to put a 6% Royal Oud candle into the same blind test as a 10% Woody Oud before you order two kilograms of either. The test costs a handful of candles; the wrong bulk order costs thousands.

Common mistake. Moving to 10% because the page allows it, keeping the 6% wick, and then chasing the soot that follows. Any load change is a new wick test.

A two-candle decision test before you commit

1
Pour 6% and 8% from one wax batch. Same jar, same wick, same temperatures. Two candles each is a suggested starting point.
2
Cure to the stated minimum. 72–96 h for Royal Oud; 48–72 h for other soy candles per CSI's pages.
3
Burn blind. Have someone else label the candles so scorers do not know which is which.
4
Score throw and character. Ask whether 8% is clearly better, not merely stronger, and log soot and pool behaviour.
5
Decide with the numbers. If 8% is not clearly preferred, stay at 6% and keep the difference, ₹18.13 of Woody Oud per candle (₹72.50 − ₹54.37), in the business.
Safety
Royal Oud's page states a flashpoint above 93°C. Add it below that figure and at your wax's stated temperature. Woody Oud's flashpoint is not published on its page, so request the MSDS on WhatsApp before setting your process.

Argue against interest
If 6% works, do not pay for 10%.
The step up costs between ₹3,624.96 and ₹6,482.40 per 100 candles across CSI's three ouds. Spend it only when a blind burn test shows a clear improvement.
Room to go up is not a reason to go up.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general fragrance and burn science from what CSI's own product pages state (loads, flashpoints, vanillin, cure guidance), and labels every suggested test length, sample count or score as a starting point for your own validation.

Prices are live CSI prices from September 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as an oil's vanillin percentage or a wick's burn rate — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Frequently asked questions

what percentage of oud fragrance oil should I use in soy candles
Follow your oil's stated range. CSI Woody Oud states 6–10% in soy and 6–8% in paraffin, and Royal Oud advises starting at 6–8% and working up to 10%. If 6% passes a cured burn test, there is no need to go higher.
does more oud fragrance oil make a candle stronger
Up to a point. Beyond what the wax holds and the wick burns cleanly, extra oil can sit unbound, increase soot or muddy the scent. Test 6% against 8% blind before assuming more is better.
how much does oud fragrance oil cost per candle
In a 200 g candle at 6%, CSI Woody Oud costs 12 × ₹4.5312 = ₹54.37, Royal Oud 12 × ₹6.40 = ₹76.80, and White Royal Oud 12 × ₹8.103 = ₹97.24 in oil.
how long should an oud candle cure
Royal Oud's product page states 72–96 h because oud takes longer to express. Other CSI soy pages state 48–72 h. Re-testing later, for example at day 7, is a reasonable starting point to validate.
do I need a different wick at 10% oud
Possibly. More oil changes the fuel the wick carries, and heavy oud material can increase carbon on the tip. Treat every load change as a new wick test, with the same jar and wax.
how many candles does 1 kg of oud fragrance oil make
In a 200 g candle, 1 kg gives 83 whole candles at 6%, 62 at 8% and 50 at 10%, using the convention that load is a percentage of total candle weight.
