Quick answers — read this first
How many candles can one person actually pour in a day? With wax continuously available, roughly 40 finished 200g pours an hour, or about 220 in a six-hour bench day. With a 1 litre Mini Electric Wax Melter it drops to about 12 an hour and 65–70 a day, because you stop to refill and re-melt.
So what is the real bottleneck? Almost never melting. It is cure space. A 14–21 day cure at 2,000 candles a month means roughly 1,400 candles standing on shelves at any moment — about 11.7 m² of shelving you have to find before you pour anything.
When does the ₹21,240 imported melter pay for itself? At around 1,700 candles of cumulative output, assuming labour at ₹200 an hour. The full working, and the sensitivity to that rate, is further down.
What should I not buy yet? Below roughly 150 candles a month, not the big melter. And CSI does not sell shelving — at 500 a month, buy racking before you buy a second melter.
The short answer
Four constraints, in the order they usually bind: melt capacity, pour cycle, cure space, hands. Work out which one is binding on you now — buying equipment that removes a constraint you do not have changes nothing.
Cure is the ceiling nobody plans for: at 500 candles a month you need about 2.9 m² of shelf standing full permanently; at 2,000 a month, about 11.7 m². Most workshops hit that wall long before they hit a melting limit.
Read each column as "given the sensible kit at the level before it". At 100 candles a month on a double boiler, melting binds: the ₹2,360 mini melter clears it. By 500 a month the melter is no longer the problem and cure shelving is — and it stays the problem at 2,000, where hands become the second wall. Pour is never the first constraint at any of these volumes.
What equipment does a professional candle workshop in India actually need?
Buy against the constraint that is binding, not against a list. Melt is cleared for ₹2,360 by the Mini Electric Wax Melter and cleared again at scale for ₹21,240 by the imported 10 kg melter. Measurement costs ₹708 in total — a pen thermometer and a weighing scale at ₹354 each — and without it nothing you learn is repeatable. Pour is a 600 ml steel pitcher at ₹708 or a pouring jug at ₹531. Incorporation is a CSI Pro Mixer at ₹349. Rework is a hot air gun at ₹531. That is the whole professional core for ₹2,296 plus one melter. Cure space is the constraint no supplier sells you — 14 to 21 days of shelving, sized in square metres, and it binds long before your melter does. One line: melting is the constraint you can buy your way out of for ₹2,360; cure space is the one you cannot buy from anybody, and it is the one that stops most Indian candle workshops from growing.

Capacity is not a feeling about how busy you are. It is a number, and you can work it out on the back of an invoice in ten minutes.
Everything below rests on four assumptions, stated so you can replace them with your own measurements — which you should, because your jars and your hands are not mine.
The assumptions, stated openly
1. The unit is a 200g finished candle at an 8% fragrance load — 184g of wax and 16g of oil, the same basis CSI uses in its costing guides. 2. Molten soy is taken at about 0.9g per millilitre, so a 1 litre reservoir holds roughly 900g. Weigh a full melter on your scale and use your own figure. 3. One practised operator, jars pre-wicked and lined up, completes a pour in about 45 seconds — decant, wipe, check the wick, move to the tray. That is 80 an hour in theory; a realisation factor of about half, for dosing, refilling, interruptions and fatigue, gives 40 finished pours an hour. 4. A bench day is six hours of actual pouring, not eight, because labelling, packing and orders are also your job.
CSI does not publish a melt time for the mini melter and I am not going to invent one. What exists is customer testimony, and it is consistent: Arzoo Vyas writes that "it took me seconds to melt my wax", Priya Singh that it "melt wax very quickly", and Tanya Walia that after double boiling she now "just leave my wax in the melter and thats it". Those say the mini melter is not slow. So the model treats its limit as reservoir size, not heating speed.

The 10 kg figure in that table is not a manufacturer claim. It comes from a published review by Sonal Sahani, nine months into owning the imported melter: "In terms of melting time, 10 kgs of wax melts in mere 20-30 minutes, the funnel is soo good, the wax is never stuck. I do not have to worry about temperatures at all, since the temperature knob does everything for me." Two things there matter for capacity. The thermostat holds working temperature unsupervised, so the melter stops being a task and becomes a tap; the funnel removes a transfer step from the pour cycle.
Notice what changed, and what did not. Going from the mini melter to the imported one moves you from 12 candles an hour to 40. But 40 an hour is not the melter's number — it is your number. The melter holds 54 candles' worth of wax at temperature; you can only decant it as fast as one person picks up a jar, fills it and puts it down. Past that point more melt capacity buys nothing. What buys more is a second person, or a four-nozzle pouring funnel at ₹1,888. I have no measured pour rate for the funnel and will not quote one — buy it, time it against your 45-second baseline.
Unit size changes all of this more than any equipment decision does. The same 10 kg charge is 54 candles at 200g and about 155 votives at 70g. Pour 70g votives at ₹31.86 each and your melter goes three times as far while your pour cycle barely moves, because a small jar takes the same time to handle as a large one. Smaller units are a capacity decision, not only a pricing one — worth knowing before Diwali, when sets of three small candles outsell single large ones anyway.
The CSI principle
A machine only helps if it is standing in front of the constraint. Anywhere else, it is inventory you plugged in.
Work out which of the four — melt, pour, cure, hands — actually stops you tomorrow morning, and spend there. A ₹21,240 melter in a workshop whose cure racks are already full is ₹21,240 of unused capacity sitting next to a wall of finished candles waiting to be sold.
Cure space is the ceiling nobody budgets for
A soy container candle needs 14 to 21 days of cure — 14 for fresh and citrus blends, longer for woody, gourmand and oriental oils. That is not idle time you can compress by spending money. It is why a candle business carries far more physical stock than its monthly sales figure suggests, and it is the commonest reason a maker with good equipment still cannot grow.
The arithmetic is unforgiving and takes one line. Standing stock in cure = monthly output × cure days ÷ 30. At 21 days of cure, that is 70% of a month's production sitting on shelves at all times, every day of the year, doing nothing except waiting.

How the area is worked out: a 200g candle in a 70 mm jar is given a 90 × 90 mm footprint — the finger clearance to lift one from a row without knocking the two beside it. That is 120 candles per square metre. A five-tier rack with 900 × 450 mm shelves gives 0.405 m² per tier, 2.03 m² per rack. Shorter cures scale down: at 14 days the 2,000-a-month figure falls to 933 standing candles and about 7.8 m². Use your own jar diameter and your own rack — the method matters more than my numbers.
Now put the two halves of this page together, because this is the whole argument. At 2,000 candles a month the imported melter and one operator need about ten pour days; the melter is switched off for the other twelve working days. The cure racks are full on all thirty days, and by design never empty. The expensive machine is idle over half the month. The shelving that looks free runs at 100% permanently. Ask which one you should have bought first.
This is where growth actually stalls in India. Most small workshops here run out of a spare bedroom, a garage bay or a corner of a shop. Two racks is a wall. Six racks is a room you no longer have. Long before the melter is working hard you will be stacking candles in cartons on the floor, losing pour dates, and shipping at day nine because the shelf is needed. A candle sold at day nine will be described as weak, and you will spend the next month blaming your fragrance oil. Plan the racks first, date every tray, move stock strictly first in, first out. The one product that sidesteps the cure queue
Wax melts have no wick, no melt pool and no burn test, so they do not tie up the testing and cure pipeline a container candle does. Counting back from Diwali on 8 November 2026: a 21-day cure puts the last useful pour date around 18 October, roughly five weeks out. A solo maker on the mini melter, pouring three days a week, can put through about 1,000 candles in that window. Whether you can cure 1,000 is a shelving question, not a melter question. The imported 10 kg melter costs ₹21,240. The mini melter costs ₹2,360. The decision is not about the ₹21,240; it is about the ₹18,880 difference, and whether the hours it buys back are worth that to you. Here is the working, with the assumption you must replace stated first.

State the labour rate, because everything turns on itI am using ₹200 per hour as the base case. That is an assumption, not a published figure — CSI does not publish wage data and will not pretend to. Read it as either what you pay a workshop hand, or what an hour of your own time is worth spent on photography, listings and customer messages instead. Substitute your own number; the table shows how far it moves the answer.

Work out hours per 1,000 candles on each machineOn the mini melter at 12 an hour, 1,000 candles is 83 hours. On the imported melter at 40 an hour the pouring is 25 hours; 1,000 candles is 184 kg, about 19 charges, and although refills overlap with pouring, add roughly 3 hours for the first melt and the top-ups — call it 28 hours. The saving is 55 hours per 1,000 candles.

Convert to rupees per candle, then divide55 hours at ₹200 is ₹11,000 per 1,000 candles, or ₹11.00 of labour saved per candle. The ₹18,880 gap divided by ₹11.00 gives 1,716 candles. That is break-even in units, not months — months depend on how fast you get there.

Test whether the saving is real moneyHours saved only become rupees if you were paying for them, or if you put them into something that earns. A solo maker with quiet evenings and no marketing backlog has bought comfort — a legitimate purchase, but not a return. Be honest about which one you are buying.

Read the middle row as the decision rule. At ₹200 an hour and 500 candles a month the imported melter clears its own cost in about three and a half months — fast enough that if you are reliably at that volume, the argument is over. At 150 a month it takes the better part of a year, and a year is long enough for plans to change. If your honest figure is ₹100 an hour because the time is your own and unsellable, the same machine takes nearly two years at 150 a month. Same equipment, same price, opposite answer. What not to buy yet — the list against our own interest.Below about 150 candles a month, do not buy the ₹21,240 melter. The ₹2,360 mini melter plus a ₹531 pouring jug is the whole correct answer, and the ₹18,880 you did not spend buys 31 kg of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks instead. Do not buy the 20 kg melter at ₹25,960 or the 20 litre unit at ₹23,600 while you work alone — the 10 kg already outruns one pair of hands. Do not buy the ₹1,888 four-nozzle funnel before the melter it feeds; it speeds a step that is not stopping you. Do not buy the ₹399 wick setting tool at 100 candles a month — ₹118 of bamboo wick holders covers it. And the biggest one: at 500 candles a month, buy shelving before a second melter. Hot wax burns are the injury that actually happensCSI 464 states melt and pour at 80–90°C. Wax at that temperature scalds and, unlike water, clings and keeps transferring heat. One rule prevents most of it: bring the jar to the wax, never carry full wax across a room. Melter and jars on the same bench at the same height. Closed shoes, tight sleeves, no loose dupatta near the melter, nothing on the floor between you and the bench, and cool water within reach.

Electrical load is the one that trips you mid-pourA melter and a hot air gun are both resistive heaters and both draw properly. Running them plus your lights off one extension board is how you lose power mid-batch and find 10 kg of wax setting solid in the tank. Give the melter its own wall socket, keep the heat gun on another, and do not daisy-chain boards. If you are unsure what your circuit will take, ask an electrician before you buy a second melter, not after.

Ventilation stops mattering to you long before it stops matteringAt ten candles a month you notice the fragrance. At two thousand you are inside it six hours a day, and your nose adapts within about fifteen to twenty minutes — which makes you the worst available judge of your own air. Work with cross-ventilation: a window plus a fan moving air out rather than around. Step outside every hour, for comfort and because you cannot assess a scent you are saturated in. Keep oil bottles capped between doses; open bottles evaporate money.

Burn testing means open flames in a building full of fuelYou cannot skip burn testing and you cannot do it near your stock. A cure room is cartons, soy wax and fragrance oil — a fuel store. Test in a different room, on a non-combustible surface, away from curtains and packaging, candles spaced apart rather than in a row. Stay in the building for the whole burn. Photograph the pool at 30, 60 and 120 minutes so a test leaves a record rather than an impression.

Label everything, including the things that look obviousA cooled pouring jug of fragranced wax looks identical to plain wax, and a cure tray without a pour date is a tray you will guess about. Scent, load and date on masking tape, at the moment you fill it. It costs nothing and it is the difference between a workshop and a pile.
One habit worth building at volume: clean down at the end of every pour day, not the week. Wax set in a pitcher overnight is a ten-minute job with a hot air gun; five days of fragranced wax in the same pitcher is a contamination problem in your next batch. How much space do I need to cure candles for a candle business?
Standing stock in cure equals monthly output × cure days ÷ 30, so a 21-day cure puts 70% of a month's output on shelves permanently. Allowing a 90 × 90 mm footprint per 200g candle in a 70 mm jar — 120 candles per square metre — that is 2.9 m² at 500 a month and 11.7 m² at 2,000 a month, roughly two and six five-tier racks. Figures and assumptions: The only measured performance figure on this page — 10 kg of wax melting in 20–30 minutes — is taken from Sonal Sahani's published review of the imported melter. Everything else is a stated model: a 200g candle at an 8% fragrance load (184g wax, 16g oil); molten soy taken at 0.9g per millilitre, giving ≈900g in a 1 litre reservoir; a 45-second pour cycle with a 50% realisation factor, giving 40 finished pours an hour; a six-hour bench day; a 15-minute re-melt into an already hot mini melter; and workshop labour valued at ₹100, ₹200 and ₹300 per hour, with ₹200 as the base case. Cure times of 14–21 days reflect standard practice for soy container candles. Cure area assumes a 90 × 90 mm footprint per candle (120 candles per m²) and five-tier racks with 900 × 450 mm shelves (2.03 m² per rack). Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states melt and pour at 80–90°C.
