Soy vs paraffin: the verdict, factor by factor
Soy wax is made from soybean oil, a farmed crop, hydrogenated into a solid. Paraffin wax is refined from petroleum. That difference in origin is real and some customers care about it. But a candle maker choosing between them needs answers to narrower questions: what each costs per candle, how much fragrance each is allowed to carry, how each looks in the jar, how each behaves in an Indian summer, how long each needs before it can be sold — and what the buyer in front of you expects to be paying for.
The table separates three kinds of evidence, because the soy-versus-paraffin debate mixes them freely. Some figures are published on CSI’s own product pages. Some come from CSI’s fragrance oil pages, which state separate usage rates for soy and paraffin. The rest is general candle-making practice, labelled as such. Nothing here is a lab result, because CSI publishes no side-by-side test data for these waxes.

Read the Edge column and a pattern appears. Paraffin wins almost everything that can be counted in rupees and hours: cheaper wax, less oil, shorter cure, brighter colour, no frost. Soy wins on documentation — CSI publishes ceilings and working temperatures for its soy grades and not for its paraffin — and on what a particular kind of buyer wants to hear. The honest conclusion is not that one wax is superior. It is that paraffin is the efficient choice and soy is the positioned choice, and your market decides which of those you are selling.
Cost per candle with live prices
At the 1 kg pack, Fully Refined Paraffin Wax Pellets cost ₹354.00/kg, Eco Soy CSI 400 ₹399.00/kg and Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 ₹507.40/kg. The paraffin saving is ₹45.00 a kilo against the cheapest soy and ₹153.40 against CSI 464. In a 200 g candle that becomes ₹9.00 and ₹30.68 of wax.
The larger difference hides in the oil. CSI’s fragrance pages set different usage rates by wax: Verbena states “Up to 10% for soy wax” and “Up to 6% for paraffin wax”. A maker costing honestly will load paraffin lower. At the series costing unit — 16 g of oil in 200 g of soy, 8% — Verbena adds ₹75.52; at 6% in paraffin, 12 g adds ₹56.64. That ₹18.88 is larger than the entire wax saving against CSI 400.

The paraffin candle comes in at ₹133.34 against ₹182.90 for CSI 464 at 8% — ₹49.56 a candle, ₹4,956.00 per hundred, about 27% cheaper. Against CSI 400 at 8% the gap is ₹27.88, and 68% of that is the extra oil, not the wax. Load CSI 400 at 6% as well and the gap shrinks to ₹9.00. Whether 6% throws well enough in soy is a question for a burn test with your oil, but the arithmetic makes one thing clear: the “soy is expensive” argument is mostly an argument about how much fragrance you put in it.
Buying at volume. CSI sells Fully Refined Paraffin Wax Pellets in 500 g and 1 kg packs only, so 10 kg of paraffin is ten 1 kg packs at ₹3,540.00. Ten kilos of CSI 400 is two 5 kg packs at ₹3,992.00; ten kilos of CSI 464 is one pack at ₹5,074.00. Throw: what CSI’s oil pages imply about each wax
Many CSI fragrance pages publish separate usage rates for the two waxes. The table lists the ones used in this guide. The pattern is consistent: soy is allowed more oil, paraffin less, and paraffin is quoted a shorter cure.

As general practice, paraffin is known for giving a strong hot throw at modest fragrance loads, and soy is known for needing more oil, a well-sized melt pool and more patience to reach its best. The lower paraffin rates on these pages fit that reputation. They do not mean soy cannot smell strong — plenty of soy candles fill a room — but they do mean you should not expect a soy candle to match a paraffin candle scent-for-gram. Remember which ceiling governs. CSI’s paraffin wax page publishes no fragrance ceiling of its own, so the oil page’s paraffin rate is the only published guide for a paraffin candle. For soy, both pages publish a figure — CSI 464 up to 10%, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks up to 13% — and the lower of the wax and oil figures governs. With Verbena that is 10% in either soy grade.
Customers judge the result, not the percentage. Preethi Prasath, reviewing Apple Cinnamon Fragrance Oil, writes: “My customer was very happy with this apple cinnamon fragrance. As soon as they entered their home this smell is warmth and pleasing.” That is the outcome to test for in either wax: the room, not the recipe card.
A fair soy-versus-paraffin test does not use one load for both. Pour the paraffin candle at its oil page’s paraffin rate and the soy candle at a soy rate the oil page allows, each in the same jar with a wick sized for that wax. Burn both for two hours, one at a time, in the same closed room with the fan off, and note how far from the candle you first notice the scent at 30, 60 and 120 minutes. Test soy after a proper cure — the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for ideally 1–2 weeks before burn testing — or you will be comparing a finished paraffin candle with an unfinished soy one.
Finish, colour, frosting and adhesion
Look. As general practice, paraffin sets smoother and glossier and, depending on grade and dye, can be slightly translucent. Soy sets opaque, with a creamy, matte surface that many Indian D2C brands deliberately feature in their photography — the “natural” look. Neither is better; they signal different things. A layered rainbow candle for a child’s birthday wants paraffin’s clarity. A minimal white candle in a ribbed glass for a wedding favour wants soy’s creaminess.
Colour. The same drop of dye generally looks brighter and more saturated in paraffin and softer, more pastel in soy, because soy’s opacity scatters the colour. CSI’s liquid dyes are reported to work across waxes; Antara Srinivas Iyer writes “I loved the way they work with all kinds of waxes.” If your range depends on deep reds, vivid blues or jewel tones, paraffin gets there with less dye. Frosting. In general practice, frosting — the white crystalline bloom on the surface and against the glass — is a characteristic of soy, not paraffin. CSI’s soy pages all claim low or minimal frosting, and good pouring practice keeps it small, but it can appear, especially on dark colours and after temperature swings. Paraffin does not form that bloom. Some paraffin candles show mottling instead; the Vybar page describes the additive as preventing mottling and suggests up to 2% for paraffin and pillar blends (about ₹12.48 per 200 g candle at 2%). Adhesion. CSI’s paraffin page claims “superb adhesion”; its soy container pages claim “excellent glass adhesion”. No page publishes a measurement, so there is no honest winner. General practice is more useful than the adjectives: container waxes of both kinds are formulated to grip the jar, pillar waxes of both kinds are formulated to shrink and release from a mould, and wet spots in either come mostly from cold jars, draughts and uneven cooling. The grade matters more than the family.
Heat, working temperatures and cure time
Heat. A common belief is that paraffin copes with Indian heat better than soy, or the reverse. On CSI’s own data, neither can be shown. None of CSI’s 100% soy grades publishes a melting point, and the Fully Refined Paraffin page describes its wax as having a “low melting point” without a figure. As general practice, container waxes of both families are soft by design, because a soft wax gives a wide melt pool in a jar, and both will soften on a Delhi balcony in May or in a closed delivery vehicle. Pillar waxes of either family are harder. The wax that survives heat is the harder one, not the one with the more virtuous origin — and every summer shipment deserves a trial parcel in real packaging, whichever you pour.
Working temperatures. Here soy is simply better documented at CSI. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks publishes melt to approximately 80–85°C, fragrance at 80–90°C with 2 minutes of slow stirring, and pour at 75–80°C; the CSI 464 page gives 80–90°C as its working range for melting and pouring; Eco Soy CSI 400 publishes fragrance at 85°C (80–90°C). The paraffin page publishes no melting, fragrance-add or pour temperature, so ask on WhatsApp before your first batch. Cure. Several CSI oil pages quote 48–72 hours for soy and 24–48 hours for paraffin. Treat those as the earliest sensible test points. Soy throw keeps developing well beyond three days — the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page itself says ideally 1–2 weeks before burn testing, and 14–21 days is standard practice for soy container candles — while paraffin generally reaches its best sooner. For a business, that is cash flow: a paraffin batch is sellable days after pouring, a soy batch weeks.
Consider a corporate order that lands on 20 October for delivery before Diwali on 8 November 2026. Nineteen days is not enough for a soy candle to cure 14–21 days and then travel. A paraffin candle poured the next day can be given its quoted cure and several more days besides, then packed and shipped with far more margin. The same maker, taking a similar order in mid-September, has time to pour soy properly. The calendar can make the wax decision for you.
In the workshop: shared melters, cleaning and storage
One melter, two waxes. Many small Indian workshops own a single melter. If you pour both soy and paraffin, a film of paraffin left in the bowl ends up in the next soy batch — harmless to the candle, but it quietly turns a “100% soy” label into a blend. Drain the melter fully, wipe it while warm with paper towel, and pour a small sacrificial batch of the next wax before production, or keep a separate Mini Electric Wax Melter (₹2,360.00) for each wax if you sell soy on its label.
Spills and cleaning. As general practice, soy wax residue on steel pitchers, spatulas and worktops lifts with hot water and dish soap more readily than paraffin, which tends to need scraping first and then wiping while warm. Never pour molten wax of either kind down a kitchen sink: it sets in the drain. Scrape spills once cool, and melt the scrapings into test candles rather than wasting them.
Storage. The CSI 464 page states a 60-month shelf life in cool, dry storage; the paraffin page publishes no shelf life. Both waxes want the same Indian storage habits: sealed containers, off the floor, out of direct sun and away from monsoon damp. Label tubs clearly — white paraffin pellets and pale soy flakes are easy to confuse once decanted, and that mix-up is the other way a soy label goes wrong.
What Indian buyers believe — and what you can honestly say
In Indian D2C candle selling — Instagram shops, Shopify stores, gifting boutiques in Bengaluru, Pune and Hyderabad — “soy” has become shorthand for a premium, natural-feeling candle, and buyers often ask for it by name. In price-led markets — festive bulk orders, temple and church candles, hotel and restaurant supply, birthday and party candles, tealights sold by the hundred — few buyers ask what the wax is, and the price per piece decides the sale. These are observations about how the market behaves, not survey figures; watch your own customers’ questions and you will see which market you are in within a month.
That expectation is worth money, which is exactly why it attracts exaggeration. This guide makes no claim that soy is healthier, “non-toxic” or “chemical-free”, and no claim that paraffin is harmful — CSI publishes no comparative emissions data, and you should not imply any. What you can say honestly is what the candle is made of, where the wax comes from (soybean oil, a farmed crop, or petroleum), and how to burn it well. As general practice, visible soot from either wax comes mainly from an oversized or untrimmed wick, a draught, or more fragrance than the wax is rated to carry — so good wicking is a better “clean burn” story than the wax family.
Honest labelling follows naturally. A paraffin candle should not be sold as soy. A soy-paraffin blend should be described as a blend. A 100% soy candle can say so if the wax page supports it — CSI 464, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and Eco Soy CSI 400 are described as 100% soy on their pages. Ranjita RAO, reviewing Orchard Pear Fragrance Oil, describes the real test of any label: “I used it in champagne candle and received a very positive review from my customer.” A candle that performs keeps the customer; a claim that fails costs you more than the wax saved.

When paraffin is the right answer — and when soy is
The page describes a fully refined paraffin in pellet form that melts evenly, with a “low melting point” and “superb adhesion”, suitable for styles “from traditional pillars to elegant container candles”. It is the cheapest candle wax in this comparison at ₹354.00/kg, and CSI oil pages allow it a lower fragrance rate, which cuts the oil bill further. Choose it for festive bulk, tealights and votives, bright or layered colours, unscented decorative work, and orders too close to a deadline for soy to cure.
What it does not give you: published melting, fragrance-add or pour temperatures, a published fragrance ceiling of its own, or packs above 1 kg on the store. Ask CSI for the temperatures and for bulk supply before a large run.

For the market that asks for soy by name, CSI 464 is the documented choice: 100% soy flakes for single-pour containers, up to 10% fragrance, 80–90°C as the working range for melting and pouring, and a 60-month shelf life in cool, dry storage, at a flat ₹507.40/kg from 1 kg to 10 kg. It costs ₹49.56 more per candle than paraffin in the example above, and it needs a proper cure. In return you can put “100% soy” on the label with the product page behind you.

It narrows the wax gap with paraffin to ₹9.00 per 200 g candle. Its fragrance ceiling is not published, so confirm your planned load with CSI before loading heavily, and test-burn — a 6% soy candle that throws well enough is the closest a soy candle gets to paraffin economics.
