What Happens If You Pour Soy Wax Too Cold?

What temperature is too cold to pour soy wax? Below the bottom of your grade’s published window: under 75°C for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (75–80°C), under 80°C for CSI 464 (page range 80–90°C), under 58°C for CSI 468 (58–60°C).
Can a cold-poured soy candle be fixed? Almost always. A heat-gun reflow fixes pitted tops at no material cost; seized fragrance needs a remelt, which costs a new ₹5.90 wick and a little wax — and restarts the cure.
Does a cold pour affect hot throw? Only if the fragrance did not incorporate. Pitting, lines and wet patches are mostly cosmetic; seized oil gives uneven throw between jars and oily tops.
What counts as “too cold” — it depends on the grade
A pour is too cold when the wax leaving the pitcher is below the lowest pour figure published for that wax — and it gets worse the further below you go and the colder the jar and room. The definition catches a common mistake: carrying one temperature habit across every wax on the shelf. CSI’s soy container grades do not share a pour window, and one is sold with a figure that would be a badly cold pour for another.

Two readings matter most. First, the Chunks page’s steps form a tight downhill run — melt to about 80–85°C, add oil at 80–90°C, stir two full minutes, pour at 75–80°C — with almost no slack. Add oil at 82°C, stir, then spend five minutes lining up jars and wick stickers, and you can be pouring below 75°C without doing anything that felt slow. Second, CSI 468 is not a “cold” wax because its numbers are lower. At 58–60°C it is on target; at 52°C it is at its own melting point and sets almost as it touches glass.
This page stays on the cold side. Pouring above the window has its own set of problems — sinkholes and heavier shrinkage are the usual ones — and those are explained in the pouring temperature truth about wet spots and sinkholes. Soy Pillar Wax is left out on purpose: it is sold for pillars and moulds, not jars, and publishes no pour temperature.
Five things a cold pour does inside the jar
Liquid wax levels and wets the glass because it is well above the point where crystals start to form. Near that point it thickens; below it, it stiffens. A fluid pour has time to spread, meet the glass fully and let air escape before it sets. A cold pour does not: the first wax to touch cool glass sets as a thin shell, the wax behind folds over it instead of merging, and the top skins over before it has levelled.

Lumpy tops: the defect everyone notices first
A cold stream no longer spreads into a flat pool. It lands, thickens and stacks, and the edges — cooled by the glass — set first and pull the rest into ripples, from a faint orange-peel finish to a crater field. It is the most visible cold-pour sign and the least serious: the candle burns just as well once the top few millimetres melt. It matters for the Instagram photo and the gift box opened under shop lights, which is why most makers fix it.
Layer lines: a pillar-candle term that turns up in jars
In pillar work, “jump lines” are rings where a pour stopped and restarted. In soy jars they show as faint bands through clear glass — usually from pouring in two or three passes, pausing to top up, or pouring so slowly that the lower fill sets before the rest arrives. Coloured wax in clear jars shows them; frosted and matte jars hide them. They do not change the burn.
Poor adhesion and wet patches
CSI 464, CSI 468 and Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are all described on their pages as having excellent glass adhesion — but wax can only adhere to glass it has properly met. Poured cold into a cool jar, it sets before full contact, and the bond has gaps from the start. They show as wet spots, at once or days later when the candle moves between AC and a warm room. Trapped air
The Chunks page asks you to pour slowly to minimise air bubbles; in a well-heated pour most small bubbles rise and burst. Thickened wax holds them, as tiny beads along the glass or a pocked layer under the top. Most are harmless. A larger void near the centre can make the flame flicker when the pool reaches it — rare, but a reason not to ignore a heavily pitted top on a candle you sell.
When the fragrance seizes: the cold-pour defect that is not cosmetic
The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page puts the risk in one line: adding fragrance too cool causes it to seize, while adding at 80–90°C with a slow two-minute stir ensures full incorporation. Strictly that is an add-stage problem, but the two travel together: the maker who lets wax cool too far before the oil usually pours cold too, because 16 g of room-temperature oil in 200 g of wax pulls a small pitcher down a few more degrees.
Makers describe seized or poorly mixed oil consistently: streaks or a grainy, curdled look in the pitcher, oil pooling on the wax instead of vanishing, and — once set — greasy patches or beads on top, especially near the edges. Across a batch, jars from the same pour smell different cold, because some got more oil. This is the pattern makers commonly report, not a CSI test result.

Is it really a cold pour? Five look-alikes
The quickest separator is your pour log. If the pitcher reading was inside the window, the pour was not cold — look elsewhere. If you did not write it down, the table helps you guess; pour the next batch with a reading on paper.

One pattern helps most: cold-pour defects appear at once. Pitting, lines, trapped air and seized oil are visible within an hour or two. Defects that turn up days later — bloom, fresh wet spots after a courier trip, sweating in a hot godown — are rarely about pour temperature.
Where the heat goes between the melter and the jar
Most cold pours are not a maker choosing the wrong number; they are heat lost after the reading. It goes to five places, and Indian workrooms make some of them worse than any recipe card assumes.
The pitcher. Steel conducts heat away fast, and a small volume of wax cools faster than a large one. A cold pitcher straight off the shelf takes a few degrees out of the first pour by itself. The Steel Pouring Pitcher (600 ml, ₹708.00) and the Candle Wax Pouring Jug (₹531.00) both work; warm the pitcher before the first transfer and refill little and often (choosing a pouring pitcher).
The oil and the wait. Oil goes in at room temperature — 38°C on a Nagpur afternoon, 22°C in an AC studio — and the colder the oil and smaller the batch, the bigger the drop. Two minutes of stirring is the method; five more spent lining up jars or answering a WhatsApp order is not. Stage every jar and wick before the wax reaches the add temperature.
The jar and the counter. Glass at 14°C on a December morning in Lucknow, or 22°C under the AC in Chennai, pulls heat from the first wax it meets. Against the Chunks page’s lowest pour figure of 75°C, the wax-to-glass gap is 61°C for a 14°C jar, 51°C at 24°C and 41°C at 34°C — half as much again to lose in winter as in a Mumbai summer. Granite, marble and kota stone counters, and steel trays, draw heat out of the base far faster than wood; a folded sheet of cardboard under the tray costs nothing.
An electric melter fixes the start of the chain, not the end. The Mini Electric Wax Melter page gives Gear I (300 W) as 70–85°C for controlled melting, and a reviewer above (not recorded as a verified purchase) says the imported 10 kg melter (₹21,240.00) takes temperature worry away. True inside the melter; once wax leaves it, pitcher, oil, wait, jar and counter still apply. The reading that counts is taken in the pitcher, just before you tip it.
For CSI 468 the log matters more. Its published pour window is 2°C wide (58–60°C): a pitcher losing a degree a minute gives you about two minutes, and at 53°C you are at the top of its stated melting range. Pour it in smaller, faster fills into jars that are not cold.
Rescue: what to fix, what to remelt, what to leave alone
Match the rescue to the defect, not to how annoyed you are with the batch. Every rescue below is general candle-making practice rather than a CSI procedure; do anything involving heat on a heat-safe surface, away from fabric and paper, and never leave it unattended.

Heat-gun reflow for a cold-poured top
The CSI Hot Air Gun page gives the method: keep a 5–6 cm distance at about a 45 degree angle; it reaches about 200°C within seconds and cannot be adjusted. So keep it moving. Sweep the top in slow circles until the surface is glossy and liquid from edge to wick, then stop — you want a thin film that re-levels, not a pool that runs into the bubbles below. Keep air off the wick base, avoid holding it on one spot of glass, and let the candle set with the fan off. It is low in stock (one unit at the time of writing); a hair dryer on its hottest setting softens a thin skin, slowly, and blows dust about.
Full remelt for seized fragrance
Expect a remelted candle to lose a little of its brightest top notes — one more reason to remelt only when the defect is the mixing, not the look. Unsure? Remelt one jar and compare it cold against an untouched jar from the same batch on day 3. If they smell the same and the untouched top is dry, the rest may only need a cosmetic fix.
What a cold pour really costs — and why festive timing is the expensive part
Take the series unit — 200 g of wax + 16 g of fragrance oil at 8% of wax weight, 216 g poured. With Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹599.00/kg, Woody Oud Fragrance Oil at 1 kg pricing (₹4.53/g) and an Eco C1 wick, one candle is ₹119.80 + ₹72.50 + ₹5.90 = ₹198.20 before the jar. A tray of 24 is ₹4,756.80.
If the whole tray seized, binning it throws away ₹4,756.80 of materials plus 24 jars. Remelting costs 24 new wicks (₹141.60) and, assuming an illustrative 5 g of wax lost per candle, ₹71.88 of wax — ₹213.48, about 4.5% of the tray. The oil comes back with the wax. On materials alone a cold pour is a cheap mistake.

That is the real cost. Found in late September, a cold-poured batch loses a day. Found on 22 October, it cannot finish a 14–21 day cure — standard practice for soy containers (why a 14-day cure matters) — and still reach customers in time. It will be sold under-cured or after the festival.
Scale matters too. A studio pouring 300 corporate-gift candles in Clear Glass Jars with Golden Lid (₹94.40 each in the 10-pack, 150 g fill) is putting about 139 g of wax and 11 g of oil in each — ₹233.84 a candle with a ₹5.90 wick and the jar — so find the problem on tray 1, not tray 30. That jar’s page says it is hot-pour safe to 85°C, which covers the Chunks pour window and is one more reason not to “fix” cold pours by overshooting.

None of this needs expensive kit. A thermometer, a timed pitcher and a sheet of cardboard prevent most cold pours; a melter removes guesswork at the start (double boiler versus electric melter; 1 L mini melter review). If cold pours keep appearing on one grade only, ask on WhatsApp before changing the wax — the answer is usually the number on the bag (ten mistakes new candle makers make).
