When Should a Candle Business Move From 10 Kg to Bulk Wax Purchasing?

At what monthly usage is bulk wax buying worth it? Our working threshold is 25 kg a month — about 125 candles at a 200 g fill — sustained for three months, with the grade, fill weight and wick settled. Below that the ladder saves too little to matter: on CSI 464 the whole break is ₹2.52 a candle, and only if you were buying 500 g packs before.
What does 60 kg of soy wax actually cost? At CSI 464's ₹507.40 per kg, 60 kg is ₹30,444.00 — 300 candles at a 200 g fill. The same 60 kg of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks is ₹35,994.00 and of Natural Soy Pearl Wax at its 5 kg rate ₹25,488.00. Which grade you choose moves the bill far more than which pack size you choose.
Is there a bulk discount on candle wax in India? CSI publishes no discount schedule. What is published is the pack ladder on each product page, and quantities above the listed packs — more than 10 kg of one grade in a single consignment — are quoted individually on WhatsApp. So ask for a quote before you build a budget round a saving, rather than assuming one exists.
The honest version: bigger packs mostly do not cut the price per kilogram
The idea that buying more makes each kilogram cheaper is so deeply held that most makers never test it against the page in front of them. It takes two minutes. Every CSI wax product page prints the price of each pack size; divide by the weight and you have the per-kilogram rate. Do it across the soy range and the pattern is not the one you expected.
On Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, the rate is ₹507.40 per kg at 1 kg, 5 kg and 10 kg — identical. The only step on that ladder is leaving the 500 g pack, which is ₹520.00 per kg, a difference of ₹12.60 per kg. On Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, the 10 kg pack works out at ₹599.90 per kg against ₹598.00 for the 500 g pack — the big pack is ₹1.90 per kg dearer, not cheaper. On Eco Soy CSI 400 the 5 kg pack is ₹399.20 per kg against ₹399.00 at 1 kg. Soy Pillar Wax is ₹600.00 per kg at every size on the page.
Two grades do pay you. Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 steps from ₹650.00 to ₹637.00 per kg at the 5 kg pack and holds it at 10 kg: ₹13.00 per kg, or 2.0%. Natural Soy Pearl Wax steps from ₹450.00 at 1 kg to ₹424.80 per kg from 5 kg upward and holds that rate all the way to its 50 kg pack: ₹25.20 per kg, or 5.6%, the largest published break in the soy range. Stock at Pearl's largest sizes is limited, so confirm availability before a season depends on it, and note that its working figures and fragrance ceiling are not published — ask on WhatsApp.

Put the biggest of those breaks into a quarter's pouring and it stops feeling like a strategy. Sixty kilograms of CSI 464 — three hundred candles at a 200 g fill — saves ₹756.00 by moving off 500 g packs, which is ₹2.52 a candle. Sixty kilograms of Natural Soy Pearl Wax at its 5 kg rate saves ₹1,512.00 against buying it in 1 kg packs. Sixty kilograms of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks bought as six 10 kg packs costs ₹114.00 more than the same weight in 500 g packs, which nobody would do for other reasons, and that is the point: the pack ladder is a rounding error in your costing.
Where bulk actually pays: consignments, lots and pour days
Consignments. Freight is charged per consignment, and a good part of it is fixed regardless of how much is in the box. Five wax orders across a quarter carry five sets of that fixed element; one order carries one. CSI does not publish a freight table, a delivery-time promise or a shipping threshold, and this page will not guess at one — but the number of consignments is entirely your decision, and it is the saving most makers actually bank when they move to bulk.
One lot across a season. Wax made at different times is not identical, in the same way that two sacks of flour are not identical. Buying a season's wax in one go means one set of behaviour to learn: one set-up time, one surface finish, one relationship between your pour temperature and your top. Five smaller orders across the same season means up to five, and every change lands in the middle of a production run rather than in a test batch. For a business shipping to customers, that consistency is usually worth more than ₹756.00.
Pour days you do not lose. Running out of wax on a Tuesday in October is not a wax problem, it is a calendar problem. If you pour 25 candles on a good day and you lose five days waiting for stock in the Diwali run-up, that is 125 candles that will not be cured in time for 8 November 2026. You cannot make those days up: cure time does not compress. The materials for those 125 candles are recoverable; the fortnight is not.

One of the reviews on this page asks us directly: “Hope to get some discount in future for bulk buys”. It is a fair request and it deserves a straight answer rather than a marketing one. CSI publishes the pack ladder on every product page and nothing beyond it; quantities above the listed packs are quoted individually on WhatsApp, taking the grade, the quantity and the delivery pincode into account. So the honest instruction is: ask for the quote, then decide. Do not build a margin plan on a discount nobody has offered you.

The cash test: what the order locks up, and for how long
A bulk wax order converts working capital into a solid that only becomes money again after you have poured it, cured it for a fortnight, packed it and sold it. That is a long round trip, and it is the single most common reason a growing candle business runs out of cash while looking profitable on paper. The arithmetic is simple enough to do in one line: order value ÷ monthly usage = months of cover. Anything beyond about three months of cover is a decision you should make deliberately rather than because a 10 kg pack was there.

The storage test: can you actually keep it
The wax itself is patient. The CSI 464 and CSI 468 pages both state a shelf life of 60 months in cool, dry storage, with CSI 468 adding to keep it sealed and CSI 464 adding to store away from sunlight and moisture. Five years is longer than any of this matters for. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page does not publish a shelf life, so we do not quote one — ask on WhatsApp if your plan depends on it.
What is not patient is an Indian room. A 60 kg order is six or seven packs that have to live somewhere for months, and in most small workshops the honest answer is a corner of a bedroom, a loft or a stairwell. In Delhi, Ahmedabad or Nagpur, the top-floor version of that corner passes 40°C through May and June; the flakes soften and cake into a block in the bag. That is a nuisance rather than a fault — caked wax melts and pours normally — but it means scooping becomes chiselling, and chiselling during a production week costs you time you budgeted for pouring.
Monsoon is the real risk. In Mumbai, Kochi or Kolkata an open pack in a humid room takes on surface moisture, and moisture in wax shows up as spitting on the melt and poorer adhesion at the glass. One open 1 kg pack is a small annoyance. Six open 10 kg packs is a season. If your storage plan is “we will keep the bags folded over”, you have failed the storage test and the fix costs less than the order: airtight bins, a raised shelf, and a room away from an outside wall.
Before you place a bulk order, go and stand in the place the wax will live and answer five questions. Is there room for the packs on a shelf or pallet, a hand's width clear of the floor? Can each pack be sealed airtight after opening, or are there bins to decant into? Does direct sun reach that spot at any hour of the day? In May, would you be willing to sit in that room for an hour? And can you get the packs in and out without carrying 10 kg up a ladder every time you pour?
If the answer to any of those is no, order half and fix the room. Wax stored badly is not cheaper wax — it is the same wax with a shorter list of things it will do well.
When not to switch, even though the arithmetic says yes
Your range is still moving. If you are still deciding between a 150 g and a 200 g fill, still trying wicks, or still choosing between a soy and a coconut-soy, bulk locks in a decision you have not made. The cost of staying on 5 kg packs for another quarter is small — on CSI 464 the ladder is flat from 1 kg up, so it is nothing at all — and the cost of committing 60 kg to the wrong grade is ₹30,444.00 and a season.
Your volume is one festival. A brand that sells 400 candles in October and 40 in February is not a bulk buyer; it is a seasonal buyer who should place a large dated order in September and go back to 5 kg packs in January. Size the standing order on February, not on October.
You are buying to chase a saving you have not been quoted. This happens constantly, and the published ladder above is why it usually disappoints. If a bulk rate is the reason for the decision, get the rate in writing on WhatsApp first — with your grade, quantity and pincode — and then run the arithmetic. Deciding first and asking later is how a business ends up with a quarter's wax and the same per-kilogram price it was paying before.
Your cash is tight this month. Wax is the most patient thing in your workshop and the least liquid. If the order would leave you short for jars, labels, packaging or advertising in the six weeks before a festival, it is the wrong month. Buy 25 kg at ₹12,685.00, pour it, sell it, and place the bigger order from the proceeds. Nothing about the pack ladder gets worse for waiting — that is the one genuinely comforting consequence of a flat price list.
Three Indian workshops at the switch point
Bengaluru — 8 kg a month, three fragrances, still testing wicks
A two-year-old Instagram brand pouring roughly 40 candles a month at a 200 g fill, currently buying 1 kg packs of CSI 464 and one 500 g pack of CSI 468 to compare. The answer is no, and it is not close. At 8 kg a month, moving off 500 g packs would save ₹100.80 a month, and most of the wax is already on the flat part of the ladder where there is nothing to save. What this workshop should buy instead is a Pen Thermometer at ₹354.00 and enough Eco Candle Wicks — C1 at ₹5.90 each, C2 at ₹9.44 — to finish the wick ladder properly. Settle the formulation; the wax quantity question answers itself six months later.
Surat — 45 kg a month of wedding favours, one grade, one fill
A wedding-favour supplier pouring 225 small candles a month, same grade and same 200 g fill for eleven months, with a dry ground-floor unit and shelving. This is a yes, and the sizing is straightforward: three months of cover is 135 kg, which at CSI 464's ₹507.40 per kg is ₹68,499.00 of wax, plus roughly 10.8 kg of fragrance at 8% of wax weight on top. The per-kilogram rate will not change, because CSI 464's ladder is flat above 1 kg — so the entire case here rests on consignments, one lot across a wedding season, and never stopping a run. That case is strong enough on its own. Place the quote request with the quantity, the pincode and the GST number, and ask what is possible above the published 10 kg pack.
Kolkata — 25 kg a month, monsoon, first floor above a shop
Right at the usage threshold, formulation settled, cash available — and storage is a first-floor room with a shared wall onto a stairwell that runs wet from June to September. This one is a yes on three tests and a no on the fourth, which makes it a no for now. The fix is cheap relative to the order: airtight bins, a raised shelf away from the damp wall, and a rule that no pack is ever left open overnight in the season.
