Now the dye. A mid shade at 0.05% of wax weight is 0.092 g. Liquid dye at the 100 tier is ₹900.00, or ₹9.00 per unit: ₹0.83. A pastel at 0.02% is ₹0.33; a deep shade at 0.10% is ₹1.66. No usable dose costs two rupees.

Colour consistency across batches is the real production problem

At ten candles a week you can eyeball colour: the week's output sits on one table in one light. At a thousand a month you cannot. Production is poured across days, at different room temperatures, sometimes by different hands, and the customer sees the jars side by side. The failure mode at volume is not bad colour. It is drift — batch three a shade deeper than batch one, unnoticed at the bench, obvious to the client who ordered 500 matching jars.

Drift has one dominant cause: dosing in drops. A drop is not a unit — its volume changes with the nozzle, with how full the bottle is, with room temperature and therefore flow, with squeeze pressure, and with who is holding it. Drops are how hobby colour is dosed. Weight is how production colour is dosed.

Step four surprises people. You never see the dye. You see it through the wax, and the three common waxes present it differently. Soy sets opaque and cream-toned and crystallises as it cools; that surface scatters light, so the colour reads paler and chalkier. Coconut-soy sets whiter and smoother, so the same dose reads cleaner. Paraffin sets translucent, so light passes through the body and the identical dose reads deeper and truer to the pigment.

Time matters too: soy keeps crystallising for days, so a jar judged at four hours and the same jar at two weeks are not the same surface. Judge colour on a fully cured candle, in daylight, against a retained reference jar — one sealed, dated reference per SKU settles every argument about drift.

Liquid versus chips at production volume
