Why do soy candles sweat in summer but not in winter? Because the amount of fragrance oil a soy wax holds comfortably falls as the wax warms. A candle poured at 13% can sit right at the edge of what the wax holds and look perfect at 22°C, then bead at 38°C. Nothing changed in the candle — the temperature it lives at did.

What fragrance load stops soy candles sweating in Indian summers? Work in a band of 8–10% of wax weight rather than at the ceiling. In a 200 g candle that is 16–20 g of oil. Where a wax page states up to 13% and the oil page states a soy range of 6–10%, the lower figure governs.

Does sweating mean the candle is unsafe? No. Beads of fragrance oil are a cosmetic and a returns problem, not a safety one. Wipe the surface with a clean tissue, keep the candle cool and level, and burn it normally. What it does mean is that the recipe has no summer headroom, and the next hot week will do it again.

Is it my wax, my oil or my storage? In summer it is usually all three at once, and storage is the cheapest to change. A candle needs a load near the ceiling, weeks at 33–40°C, daily heating and cooling, and trapped air against the surface. Remove any one of those four and the beading usually stops.

Summer sweating is not one cause; it is four conditions arriving together, which is why it appears suddenly in a recipe you have poured for months. The right column is the order to attack them in, cheapest first. Deliberately left out: the non-seasonal causes of sweating — incompatible oils, under-mixing, adding fragrance at the wrong temperature — which are covered in the linked guides and apply in every month of the year.

Why do soy candles sweat during summer in India, and what stops it?
Because a soy candle is a fragrance oil held inside a wax structure, and a warm structure holds less than a cool one. That is general candle-making practice rather than a published CSI figure, and it explains the thing that confuses makers most: the recipe did not change in May, the temperature did. A candle poured at 13% in a wax whose page states up to 13% is sitting exactly at the edge of what that wax will carry, and at 22°C in a Bengaluru January that is fine. Put the same candle through six weeks of 33–40°C afternoons in Nagpur, Ahmedabad or Delhi, with the structure loosening every afternoon and re-setting every night, and the excess arrives at the surface as beads. Four conditions have to line up: a load with no reserve, sustained heat rather than one hot day, daily cycling between hot and cooler, and trapped warm air against the surface from a sealed bag, a stacked carton or a shrink wrap applied while the candle was still warm. Remove any one and the beading usually stops, so attack them in order of cost. Move the stock off the warm shelf and out of the sealed bag first — that is free. Then bring the load into the 8–10% band, taking the lower of the wax page's ceiling and the oil page's soy range: Dark Vanilla states 6–10% of total wax weight, so in a 13% wax the oil is what governs. That change also saves money — dropping a 200 g candle from 26 g to 16 g of Dark Vanilla saves ₹76.46 a candle, or ₹7,646.00 across a hundred. Changing the wax is the last lever, not the first.

Why a candle that was clean in February beads in May

Nothing about the candle changed. The temperature it lives at changed, and that is enough.

Sweating is fragrance oil arriving at the surface of a set candle instead of staying inside it. The general causes — incompatible oils, under-mixing, adding fragrance at the wrong temperature, simply overdosing — apply in every month of the year, and the live guides on why your candle is sweating fragrance oil and the eight real causes of candle sweating cover them properly. The mechanism is one sentence. A soy wax holds a certain amount of fragrance oil inside its solid structure, and the amount it holds comfortably falls as the wax warms and the structure loosens. That is general candle-making practice rather than a published CSI measurement, and it is why the same recipe behaves differently in two seasons. If you poured with a margin — the wax could have held more than you gave it — there is room to lose some capacity and still hold everything. If you poured at the maximum stated on the wax page, there is no margin, and the first sustained warm spell pushes the excess out.

That explains the timing, but not the accumulation. A candle does not bead on one warm afternoon and then stop. It beads a little on the first hot day, re-sets overnight into a slightly different structure, beads again the next afternoon, and after two or three weeks there is a visible film. Oil that has reached the surface does not simply go back in when the room cools, which is why the problem always looks worse in the third week of a heatwave than in the first. It is also why a candle that sat in a shop for six weeks in May looks worse than an identical candle you burned the day you made it.

Blaming the fragrance oil because the batch is new. The oil you bought in March is often blamed for a problem that the load, the shelf and the packing created together. Test it properly before you condemn it: pour the same oil at 8% into three jars and store one cool, one on the warm shelf and one in a sealed bag, all from the same melt. If the cool jar is clean and the warm one beads, the oil is not the variable — the temperature is. If all three bead at 8%, then the oil genuinely does not suit that wax, and that is worth knowing before you buy a kilogram of it.

Dwell time and cycling: the two things Indian summers do that a hot afternoon does not

It is not the peak temperature that gets your candles. It is how long they sit near it, and how many times they go up and down.

Dwell time is how long the candle spends warm. A candle that reaches 38°C for two hours in the afternoon and cools to 27°C by ten at night has a very different summer from one that sits between 33°C and 38°C for three weeks without ever properly cooling. The second is far harder on a load with no reserve, and it is the normal condition of stock in a closed storeroom, in a stacked carton in the middle of a pallet, or in a shop that shuts at nine and opens at eleven.

Cycling is the number of times it goes up and down. Each warm phase moves a little oil towards the surface and each cool phase re-sets the wax around what is left. Repeating that daily for a season is what turns an invisible margin into a visible film. This is why the same candle sold in two Indian cities can behave differently for reasons that have nothing to do with which city is hotter on paper.

None of those temperature descriptions is a CSI measurement — they are the patterns Indian makers describe, listed so you can recognise which one you are in. The useful step is to stop reasoning about your city and start measuring your shelf. A Pen Thermometer at ₹354.00, read at 3 p.m. and at 9 p.m. on the shelf where your finished stock actually waits, for one week in May, will tell you more than any regional generalisation.

Stock rotation beats everything
Dwell time is the one variable you control completely. A candle that is poured, cured for 14 days and sold in week three never accumulates a summer film, whatever the load. A candle poured in April and still in the carton in July has had ninety days of cycling. Date every carton, sell oldest first, and keep summer production closer to demand than you would in winter — that alone solves a large share of Indian sweating complaints without touching the recipe.

Headroom: the number that decides whether summer shows

A ceiling is a maximum, not a target. The difference between those two words is what your summer costs.

Fragrance load here, and on CSI's product pages, is a percentage of wax weight. For a 200 g candle: 8% is 16 g of oil, 10% is 20 g, 13% is 26 g. The wax page states a maximum for the grade — CSI 464 up to 10%, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and CSI 468 up to 13%, with Eco Soy CSI 400 not publishing one. The oil page, where it states a range, gives its own figure for soy: Dark Vanilla states 6–10% of total wax weight. When the two differ, the lower one governs. A 13% wax carrying a 6–10% oil is a 10% candle.

That last figure is the part worth arguing with your own instincts about. Pouring at the ceiling all summer does not only put the surface of the candle at risk; it also spends a kilogram of oil more per hundred candles than an 8% pour of the same oil. Measuring fragrance by volume, by cap, or by eye. A load only means something if it is weighed. Estimating 26 g of a viscous oil from a bottle cap can put you several grams either side, and several grams either side of a 13% pour is the difference between a clean candle and a beading one. Stock is limited, so a kitchen scale that reads to a gram is a perfectly good substitute.

Storage and packaging: where summer sweating is actually created

Most beading candles were made correctly and then stored badly for six weeks.

The candle you poured is only half the story. Between the pour and the sale it sits somewhere, usually for longer than you think, and that somewhere decides whether the recipe's headroom is ever tested. This is the cheapest part of the whole problem to fix, and the part makers change last.

Two details that are specific to Indian production. First, most small makers store stock in the same room they pour in, which is the warmest room in the house on pour day — move the finished stock out before you start the next melt. Second, festive production compresses everything: if you are pouring for Diwali on 8 November 2026, the candles need to be poured by about mid-October to allow a 14 to 21 day cure plus transit, which means a large batch sitting boxed through the last warm weeks of October. Date the cartons, keep them low and internal, and do not wrap anything that is still warm from the pour.

Packing a batch the same evening you poured it. A candle that feels cool on top can still be warm through the middle of the wax, and sealing that into a polybag gives you the perfect conditions for a film to form: warmth, no ventilation, and a surface pressed against plastic. Leave candles uncovered and level for a full 24 hours before any wrapping, and finish the cure before packing. The ten-day summer sweat test

Nine jars, three loads, three storage conditions, ten days. It tells you which of the four conditions is yours.

This is deliberately a small test, because the point is to isolate one thing. Everything is identical except the load and the storage: same wax, same oil, same wick, same jar, same melt, same pour temperature, same day. Nine jars in CSI 464 with Dark Vanilla come to ₹2,388.58 in materials.

Buy the headroom, not the ceiling. The margin you never use is what carries the candle through May.
Nine test jars cost ₹2,388.58 once. A hundred candles poured at 13% cost ₹30,617.60 and give you no reserve at all; the same hundred at 8% cost ₹22,971.60 and leave the wax something to hold in reserve.

Fixing it in order of cost

Four levers. Three of them are free, and makers usually reach for the fourth.

Work down this list and stop at the first thing that fixes it. Each step is cheaper than the one below, and each is easier to undo.

1 · Move the stock, and unwrap it

Lowest shelf, internal wall, out of any sealed bag, single layer rather than stacked. Wipe the existing beads off with a clean tissue and leave the candles uncovered and level for 48 hours in the coolest place you have. Re-photograph. If the beading does not return over the following fortnight, you have fixed it for nothing.

2 · Bring the load into the band

Move to 8–10% of wax weight, weighed, and take the lower of the wax ceiling and the oil page's soy range. This saves money as well as surfaces: ₹76.46 a candle from 13% to 8% with Dark Vanilla. Re-pour a small batch, cure it 14 days, and store it beside the old one so you are comparing like with like.

3 · Change the container or the pack

A lid protects a summer surface from dust and airflow, and it is the change that most improves how a slightly softened candle looks to a customer. If you have been shrink-wrapping, stop wrapping warm candles. If cartons are stacked, restack weekly or store in a single layer through the hottest weeks.

4 · Change the wax, last

A grade change follows every candle you make afterwards, so it belongs at the bottom of the list. If you do get here, the useful direction is usually towards a lower stated ceiling rather than a higher one — CSI 464 at up to 10% makes it harder to over-dose than a 13% grade does. Compare two grades side by side at the same load, in your own room, with everything else identical, and give the comparison 14 days before you decide.

Adding more fragrance because the sweating candle smells weaker. This is the trap that turns one bad batch into a bad season. A candle that has pushed oil to the surface has less oil left inside it, so it does smell weaker — and raising the load on the next batch takes you further past the point where the wax can hold it. Fix the headroom and the storage first; judge the throw at day 14 on a candle that is not beading.

What sweating is not

Three honest clarifications, including one that costs us a sale.

It is not a safety problem. Fragrance oil at the surface of a candle is a cosmetic and a customer-confidence issue. Wipe it with a clean tissue, keep the candle level and cool, trim the wick and burn it normally. If a wick is coated in oil, wipe it and let it dry before lighting. Sweating does not make a candle dangerous, and telling a customer it does helps nobody.

It is not frosting, and it is not a wet spot. Frosting is a white crystalline bloom on the surface of soy and is normal in natural wax — the live guide on why soy wax frosts covers it honestly. A wet spot is an air gap where wax has released from the glass and it feels dry to the touch. Sweating is oily and transfers to your finger. Three different problems, three different fixes, and confusing them wastes a season.

It is not automatically a reason to buy something. The three cheapest fixes on this page cost nothing, and the fourth is to buy less fragrance oil. A maker who moves stock off a hot shelf, waits for candles to cool before packing and drops from 13% to 8% has spent nothing, saved ₹7,646.00 per hundred candles, and usually solved the problem. That is a worse outcome for a raw-material supplier and a better outcome for you, and we would rather write it down than have you re-pour a Diwali batch in October.

Finally, what is not published. CSI does not publish sweating, hot-storage or heat-resistance data for any grade, and the fragrance ceiling for Eco Soy CSI 400 is not published either. Where a number exists on a product page it is quoted here; where it does not, the answer is to test conservatively and to ask on WhatsApp rather than to work from a figure somebody guessed.

Why do soy candles sweat in Indian summers?
Because warm soy wax holds less fragrance oil inside its structure than cool soy wax does. A candle poured near the wax page's stated maximum has no reserve, so weeks of 33–40°C with daily heating and cooling push the excess to the surface as beads. Four conditions have to line up — a load with no headroom, sustained heat, daily cycling and trapped warm air from packing — and removing any one usually stops it.
What fragrance load should I use in summer to stop sweating?
Pour in the 8–10% of wax weight band. For a 200 g candle that is 16–20 g of oil. Take the lower of the wax page's ceiling and the oil page's soy range: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and CSI 468 state up to 13%, CSI 464 states up to 10%, and an oil like Dark Vanilla states 6–10% for soy, so in that pairing 10% governs. Dropping from 26 g to 16 g also saves ₹76.46 a candle at Dark Vanilla 1 kg pricing.
Can I still sell or burn a candle that has sweated?
Yes. Sweating is cosmetic, not a safety fault. Wipe the surface and the wick with a clean tissue, keep the candle level and cool, trim the wick to about 5–6 mm and burn it normally. It will smell slightly weaker than it should, because some oil has left the wax. What you should not do is sell it looking like that — wipe it, re-check it 48 hours later, and fix the cause before the next batch.
Does changing to a different soy wax stop summer sweating?
Sometimes, and it is the most expensive lever, so try it last. A grade change follows every candle you make afterwards. If you do change, the useful direction is often a lower stated ceiling rather than a higher one, because it caps the dose you can talk yourself into: CSI 464 states up to 10% against 13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and CSI 468. Compare two grades side by side at one load for 14 days before deciding.
Why does my candle sweat in the carton but not on the table?
Because a carton has long dwell time and no ventilation. The middle of a stacked pile never properly cools at night, so the wax stays loose for days instead of hours, and a sealed polybag traps warm air and vapour against the surface. Store finished stock in a single layer on a low, internal shelf, and never bag or shrink-wrap a candle that is still warm from the pour.
Is sweating the same as frosting or wet spots?
No. Sweating is oily and transfers to your finger. Frosting is a white crystalline bloom that is normal in natural soy and feels dry. Wet spots are air gaps where the wax has released from the glass; they look damp and are completely dry to the touch. Each has a different cause and fix, so identify which one you have before changing anything in the recipe.
