Quick answers — read this first
Why does my soy candle have bubbles in it? Because air went in during stirring or pouring and the wax set before it could rise out. Soy is thick and it skins quickly against cold glass, so a bubble only has to survive a few minutes to be trapped for good. The common culprits are a fast whisk, a long pour, a cold or damp jar and the air caught under the wick tab.

How do I stir fragrance in without making bubbles? Slowly, deeply and for a fixed time. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for a slow two-minute stir after adding fragrance at 80–90°C. Keep the stick or the CSI Pro Mixer head fully submerged, move in wide figures of eight along the bottom, and stop the moment the wax starts to cloud.

Does pour height really matter? Yes, more than most makers expect. Pour from 2–3 cm above the surface, down the inside wall or along a stirring stick, in one continuous stream. A 20 cm drop folds air under the wax as it lands, and every restart of the stream leaves a fresh set of pinholes.

Can bubbles be fixed after the candle has set? Surface pinholes, yes — a brief reflow closes them. Bubbles trapped deep in the body or against the glass cannot be reached without remelting, which costs a new wick and sticker (₹8.40) plus a fresh cure. Prevention is far cheaper than rescue here.

Why does my soy candle have bubbles, and which step is putting the air in?
Bubbles in a finished soy candle are trapped air. Every one of them entered as a pocket somewhere between the melter and the bench, and stayed because soy wax is viscous and skins quickly — especially against cool glass, where a surface film can form within a minute of the pour. Read the pattern and you can name the step. Fine froth in the top third is the whisk: stirring too fast, or with the head near the surface. Pinholes scattered across the top are the pour: too high, too fast, or restarted mid-stream. A band of bubbles flat against the glass is a cold jar, and in an air-conditioned room that is most jars. Round scattered bubbles, sometimes with a hiss as you pour, point to moisture — a jar washed and not dried, a wet stirrer, steam off a double boiler. Four kinds of bubble, and what each one is telling you

A bubble is evidence. Where it sits in the jar tells you which minute of your process it came from.

Makers describe all of these as “bubbles”, then change the wax, which almost never helps. Look at the jar properly first. The four patterns below come from four different steps, and three of them are free to fix.

One distinction worth making early, because it saves a lot of wasted effort. A bubble is air inside the wax. A wet spot is a patch where the wax has released from the glass, and it looks like a damp shadow rather than a round void — the live guide on wet spots in candles covers that separately. Bubbles move with the wax; wet spots appear and disappear as the jar warms and cools.

Blaming the wax grade. Bubbles are a process fault, and the grades behave more alike here than most makers assume. Per 200 g, Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 is ₹101.48, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks is ₹119.80, Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 is ₹130.00 and Eco Soy CSI 400 is ₹79.80. Switching between them changes the pour temperature you work at, not whether a fast whisk folds air in. Fix the technique on the cheapest grade you already own, then decide.

Where the air comes from: five entry points

Air does not appear in the jar. It is carried there, and there are only five vehicles.

The diagram above ranks them by how often they turn out to be the real cause on an Indian bench. Here is what each one actually does inside the wax.

1 · The whisk

Stirring is the only step where you are deliberately putting energy into the liquid, and it is the easiest place to fold air in. A fast whisk near the surface creates a vortex that drags air down; so does lifting the stirrer clear of the wax and dropping it back. Soy at pouring temperature is thick enough that those bubbles rise slowly, and if the jar is poured within a minute or two of stirring, many of them never make it out.

The published instruction is a good one: the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks you to add fragrance at 80–90°C and stir slowly for two full minutes. Eco Soy CSI 400 asks for a gentle two-minute stir at 85°C. Two minutes is long enough to disperse the oil properly and slow enough that the surface never breaks.

2 · The pour

Wax falling into a jar behaves like any other liquid: it folds a sheet of air under itself as it lands, and the faster and further it falls, the more it folds. A 20 cm drop straight into the middle of a jar is the single most common source of surface pinholes. Pour from 2–3 cm above the rising surface, aim at the inside wall or run the stream down a stirring stick, and do not stop and restart — each restart leaves a new set of dots.

3 · Cold glass

This one is specific to container candles. Wax touching cool glass sets a thin film almost immediately, and anything caught in that first film stays there as a flattened bubble on the wall. It is also why the same recipe can look flawless in a Chennai workroom in May and pocked in an air-conditioned Gurugram studio in January. Jars at room temperature are usually enough; jars taken straight out of a cold store or an air-conditioned cupboard are not.

4 · Water

Water in wax does not dissolve; it boils off or sits as a pocket. A jar washed and dried with a cloth that left it damp, a stirring stick that was rinsed, condensation on a jar carried from an air-conditioned room into a humid one, steam off a double boiler — all put water where it will become a bubble. Isopropyl Alcohol Spray at ₹383.00 for 150 ML and ₹520.00 for a litre is the practical way to clean jars, because it takes the residue off and evaporates instead of leaving a film.

5 · The wick tab

The last one is small but very visible, because it sits where the eye goes. A wick sticker that is only pressed at the edges leaves a dome of air under the tab; the first wax over it seals the dome in, and you get a ring of bubbles around the wick base. Press the tab flat with a thumb or the end of a Wick Centering Device (₹118.00), and pour the first centimetre slowly so the wax has time to creep under the metal rather than bridge over it. Pour one jar, wait ten minutes, and look at it against a light before you pour the other twenty-nine. Almost every bubble pattern is visible by then, and a ten-minute check costs nothing next to a batch that has to be remelted.

Stirring without whipping: technique, time and the mixer

Two minutes of slow stirring disperses fragrance better than thirty seconds of fast stirring, and it does not aerate the wax.

Three variables decide whether stirring adds air: speed, depth and duration. Depth matters most. A whisk or stick that stays fully submerged moves wax against wax; one that breaks the surface moves wax against air. Speed matters next: you are trying to fold the oil through the wax, not to emulsify it. Duration is the one people cut short, and cutting it short is what tempts them to go faster.

The honest verdict: a powered mixer does not automatically mean fewer bubbles. Used badly — head near the surface, full speed, lifted in and out — it will aerate a melt faster than any stick. Used properly, with the head down near the bottom of the pitcher and the wax moving in a slow circle, it is more repeatable than a hand, which is why it earns its place on a long batch rather than on a single test jar.

One more timing point. Stop stirring when the wax starts to go cloudy at the edges of the pitcher. Past that moment you are stirring a partly crystallised liquid, which is thicker, holds air harder and will take pockets straight into the jar. If the melt has cooled that far before you are ready, reheat it gently rather than stirring it back to life. Whipping the wax to “mix the fragrance in properly”. Fragrance oil disperses into soy at 80–90°C with very little help; speed adds nothing except air. If the oil is genuinely not going in, the problem is temperature or load, not agitation — and the ceiling is set by the lower of the wax and the oil figures: Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states up to 10% of total wax weight, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 up to 13%, and the Jasmine Fragrance Oil page gives up to 10% for soy. The lower number governs.

The pour: height, angle and one unbroken stream

The wax is only falling for about a second. That second decides how the top looks for the life of the candle.

This is the four-step pour that keeps air out. It assumes the series costing unit: 200 g of wax plus 16 g of fragrance oil at 8% of wax weight, 216 g poured, which at Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 and Jasmine Fragrance Oil prices is ₹101.48 of wax and ₹62.77 of oil, with an Eco Candle Wicks C1 wick at ₹5.90 — ₹170.15 a candle before the jar.

Two refinements worth knowing. First, a slight tilt of the jar for the opening centimetre lets the wax run rather than fall, which almost eliminates the first-contact bubbles at the base. Second, the bench tap works only while the wax is fully liquid; once the surface has dulled, tapping marks the top instead of clearing it.

Monsoon and festive season overlap. Jars that were damp in August become bubbles in September. Moisture: the monsoon bubble

In July in Mumbai, the air itself is a raw material you did not order.

Water is the one bubble source that has nothing to do with technique and everything to do with the room. It also produces the most alarming symptom: a faint hiss or crackle as the wax hits the jar, which is a small amount of water flashing to steam. If you hear that, stop and dry everything before pouring another jar.

Two seasonal habits make most of this go away. Between June and September, wash jars a day ahead and store them upside down on a rack; on pour day, a quick pass with Isopropyl Alcohol Spray is all they need. And keep opened wax in its bag inside a lidded box rather than in the bag alone, which is a five-rupee habit that protects a ₹5,074.00 sack.

Some of these are fixable in thirty seconds. Some are not fixable at all, and knowing which is which saves an evening.

The last row deserves defending. A band of flattened bubbles against the glass is invisible in a White Matte Glass Jar at ₹70.80 and obvious in a clear one. If the batch is going into opaque or matte containers, the honest commercial decision is usually to ship it and fix the process next time. Remelting a whole run of 50 candles to remove a defect nobody will see costs ₹8,507.40 worth of handling and a second 14–21 day cure — and the wax and oil have both been through another heat cycle.

Reheating the surface until the bubbles “come up”. They will not. A reflow melts a layer perhaps a millimetre or two deep; anything below that stays exactly where it is, and the extra heat can dish the top or discolour a heavily loaded candle. Reflow is a finishing tool for pinholes, not a repair for the body of the candle.

If you want to run the diagnosis properly before a festive batch, the smallest sensible kit is a kilogram of wax, a 50 gm bottle of oil, a 20-pack of wicks, a thermometer and the mixer: ₹1,558.40. Pour five jars from one melt — one stirred fast, one poured from 20 cm, one into a jar straight from an air-conditioned cupboard, one into a jar you deliberately leave damp, and one done properly. A bench routine for Indian workrooms, season by season

The wax does not change between May and August. Everything around it does.

Summer: 38–42°C in Delhi, Ahmedabad and Nagpur

Hot rooms are kind to bubbles. Glass is warm, wax stays fluid longer, and air has time to rise out before the surface skins. The risk in summer is the opposite: makers move jars in front of an air conditioner or a fan to speed things up, and a cold draught across a warm jar produces exactly the wall band this page is about. Pour in the hot room, then let the jars cool in the hot room.

Monsoon: Mumbai, Kochi, Kolkata

Humidity is the season’s signature. Assume every jar and tool is slightly damp unless you dried it yourself, keep wax sealed, and give the melt an extra 30 seconds of rest after stirring — thicker, cooler air in the workroom means the wax also cools a little faster on the way to the jar.

Winter: north Indian mornings

A 10°C Delhi morning is the hardest condition for container candles, because the glass is genuinely cold. Bring jars into the workroom the night before, pour late morning rather than at dawn, and consider a grade with a lower pour temperature where it suits the product: Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 publishes 58–60°C against the 75–80°C you would treat as the Chunks pour temperature, which narrows the gap between wax and glass.

Festive weeks

Volume is the enemy of technique. When you are pouring 60 jars in an evening, the pour gets faster, the stir gets shorter and the pitcher gets refilled mid-jar. Build the batch around the constraint instead: melt in 1 kg lots, pour in trays of ten, and check the first jar of every tray. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November 2026, and with a 14–21 day cure plus courier time, mid-October is the last comfortable pour date.

Are bubbles in a soy candle a sign of poor-quality wax?
Almost never. Bubbles are trapped air, and air enters during stirring, pouring and jar contact rather than in the bag. Per 200 g the grades cost ₹101.48 (Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464), ₹119.80 (Luxury Soy Wax Chunks), ₹130.00 (Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468) and ₹79.80 (Eco Soy CSI 400), and all four will bubble if the wax is whipped and poured from height. Change the technique before the grade.
Will bubbles affect how the candle burns?
A scatter of small bubbles is cosmetic. A large void in the body can let the melt pool drop suddenly when the burn reaches it, which makes the first hours behave unpredictably — the same reason a hidden cavity matters. If a jar rattles or sounds hollow, treat it as a structural fault rather than a blemish and remelt it.
How long should I stir fragrance oil into soy wax?
Two minutes, slowly, with the stirrer fully submerged. That is what the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for after adding fragrance at 80–90°C, and what the Eco Soy CSI 400 page asks for at 85°C. Longer does no harm as long as the wax stays above its pour temperature; faster does harm, because speed is what folds air in.
Does a wax melter cause fewer bubbles than a double boiler?
Indirectly, yes. A double boiler puts steam near an open melt, and the lid drips condensation back in; a Mini Electric Wax Melter (₹2,360.00) heats the wax directly, so there is no water anywhere in the process. It also holds temperature, which removes the reheat cycle where wax is stirred while it is already clouding.
Can I pour hotter to let the bubbles escape?
Only within the published range, and it is a poor trade. Hotter wax is thinner, so bubbles do rise faster — but a hotter pour also shrinks more as it sets and is more likely to leave a crater. Stay inside the stated figures: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 75–80°C, Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 58–60°C, and the 80–90°C working range the Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 page gives for melting and pouring.
Why do the bubbles only show against the glass?
Because that is where the wax froze first. Glass conducts heat out of the melt far faster than the air above the jar does, so a film forms on the wall within seconds of contact and anything caught in it is pinned there. Warm jars, a slower first centimetre of pour and a bench tap while the wax is fully liquid deal with nearly all of it.
