Quick answers — read this first
Why does my soy candle have white patches? There are six common causes and they are not interchangeable: frosting (soy crystal growth), wet spots (air gaps at the glass), mottling (oil separating in the body), dye or mica separation, trapped air, and bloom after transit. Identify by location and timing before changing anything.

How do I tell frosting from wet spots? Location settles it. Frosting appears on the top surface and against the glass as fine, even, directionless feathering. A wet spot is only ever visible through the glass, has a clean edge, and will fade for a few minutes if you cup the jar in warm hands — frosting will not move.

Are white patches a defect I should not sell? Most are cosmetic. The ones worth stopping for are a pull-away groove at the rim you can catch a fingernail in, large trapped air pockets, and anything caused by using a pillar wax such as Soy Pillar Wax in a jar — that grade is sold for moulds, not containers.

Do white patches change how the candle burns? Usually not at all. Frosting, bloom and mottling are surface and structural effects that burn away with the first melt pool. The exceptions are large air voids near the wick and a fragrance load pushed past the wax page's stated maximum — up to 10% for CSI 464, up to 13% for the Chunks and CSI 468.
The short answer
Start with location: a mark you can only see through the glass is an air gap; one on the top surface is frosting, bloom or trapped air; one in the body is mottling, dye or mica.
Then timing: anything visible in the first hour was decided at the pour and will never change; anything that arrives on day 3–14 is crystal growth and will keep moving.
Then one test: cup the jar in warm hands for three to five minutes — a wet spot fades and returns, frosting ignores you, and dye does not care at all.

Straight answer
So why does my soy candle have white patches?
Because six unrelated things produce the same colour, and you have been treating them as one. Work in this order. Location first: a patch visible only through the glass is an air gap at the wall — a wet spot; one on the top surface is frosting, transit bloom or trapped air; one suspended in the body is mottling, dye streaking or a settled mica band; a white line at the rim you can catch a fingernail in is shrinkage and pull-away. Timing second: anything you saw within the first hour was fixed at the pour and will never change, and anything that arrived on day three to day fourteen is crystal growth that will keep moving. One test third: cup the jar in warm hands for three to five minutes — an air gap fades and returns as the glass cools, frosting does not move, pigment problems do not care. Only then does the shopping decision make sense. Moving from CSI 464 (page: low frosting, minimal blooming, up to 10% load) to CSI 468 (page: minimal frosting, up to 13%) costs ₹28.52 per 200 g candle and helps with exactly one of the six. A remelt of fifty jars costs about ₹421.85 in wicks and wax loss and a working day — cheap in September, ruinous in late October.

Six white patches, and what each one actually is

The candle is white. The patch is whiter. That is the whole symptom most makers have to work with — and it is not enough to act on.

Soy wax is a plant fat, and plant fats do not freeze into a single uniform solid the way a sheet of glass does. They build a crystal structure as they cool, and that structure is sensitive to how fast the heat left, what was dissolved in the wax at the time, and what the wax was touching while it set. A white patch is that structure, or an absence of it, becoming visible. Six different situations produce a mark a customer would describe the same way, and they have almost nothing in common except the colour.

This page does one job: it tells you which of the six you are looking at. It does not run through prevention protocols — the frosting guide and the wet spots guide already cover those, and the identification has to come first anyway. Fixing frosting when you have a dye problem wastes a fortnight.

Only two of the six are pour-day faults you can cure with process alone. Two are inherent to the material and will come back on some jars whatever you do. One is a colouring mistake that is permanent the moment the wax sets. One happens after the candle has left you. Treating them as a single problem called “frosting” is why so many makers remelt batches that were never faulty.

Calling every white mark frosting. Frosting is the crystal one: fine, even, directionless, and it keeps developing. A mark with a clean curved edge that you can only see through the glass is an air gap, and no change to your cooling routine will remove it once it has formed. A pale band a centimetre above the base with a level top edge is settled pigment, and it was decided in the pitcher, not in the jar. Get the name right and the fix is usually obvious; get it wrong and you will change three variables and learn nothing.

There is an honest caveat to state before the method. CSI publishes finish claims for its waxes — Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 is described on its page as having low frosting and minimal blooming, Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 as having minimal frosting, and the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page says the wax produces smooth tops and minimal frosting or wet spots when used correctly. What is not published, by CSI or by most suppliers, is a measured frost rating, a photograph standard, or a percentage of jars that will show a patch under given conditions. So this page works from what you can observe on your own bench rather than from numbers nobody has published.

Location first: the four zones of a jar candle

Where a patch sits eliminates more suspects in five seconds than any amount of staring at its texture.

Pick the jar up and look at it three times, in this order. First look through the glass from the side, at eye level, with a window or lamp behind you. Then look straight down at the top surface. Then tilt the jar and run your eye along the rim where the wax meets the glass. Those three looks map onto the four zones in the diagram above, and each zone hosts a different short-list.

Zone D is the only one you can also feel. Run a fingernail along the top edge where the wax meets the glass: if it drops into a groove, the wax has shrunk away from the wall and the white line you can see is the glass showing through an air gap. That single check separates a cosmetic rim ring from a serious adhesion failure faster than any photograph.

A jar in frosted, matte or coloured glass hides zones B and C almost completely, which is worth knowing in both directions. That is a presentation decision, not a fix — and for diagnosis it is a handicap. Pour your test jars in clear glass even if you sell in matte, because a defect you cannot see is a defect you cannot name.

POUR ONE CLEAR TEST JAR PER BATCH
Add a single clear jar to every production run, wick it and pour it from the same pitcher, and keep it on the shelf. It costs one jar and about ₹181.91 of wax and oil, and it is the only window you have into zones B and C for the whole batch. When a customer sends a photograph three weeks later, you have a reference candle from the same melt to compare against.

Three bench tests that name the patch in fifteen minutes

Each test changes one condition and watches what the patch does. A patch that responds to warmth is a different animal from one that ignores it.

None of these need equipment you do not own. They are general candle-making bench practice rather than CSI laboratory procedures, and they work on any supplier's soy wax. Run them on one jar from the batch, in order, and write the result down before you move on — the point is the sequence of answers, not any single one.

The torch rake, thirty seconds. Take a phone torch and hold it almost flat against the top surface so the light rakes across at a shallow angle. Texture throws shadows; colour does not. If the patch disappears when the light is flat and reappears when you light it from above, you are looking at a change in surface roughness — bloom, frosting or a re-set surface. If it looks the same under both, it is in the wax rather than on it, which points to dye, mica or mottling.

The fingernail scrape, one minute. Drag a fingernail gently across the patch. Frosting and transit bloom are a skin of fine crystals a fraction of a millimetre thick: they will burnish under a nail and go briefly translucent, and the polished line stands out against the untouched surface. Mottling and dye streaks will not change at all, because they run through the body. Never do this on a candle you intend to ship — do it on the clear test jar.

The warm-hand test, five minutes. Cup both hands around the outside of the glass over a wall patch and hold for three to five minutes, or rest the jar against a warm mug. Skin is around 32–33°C, well under any pour temperature, so nothing melts. What can happen is that the outer millimetre of wax softens just enough to re-contact the glass: if the white island fades while the jar is warm and creeps back as it cools, it is an air gap — a wet spot. Frosting will not move. This is also the cleanest way to prove to yourself that a wet spot is not water.

The warm-room hold, twenty-four hours. Leave the jar somewhere steady at about 30–32°C — a shelf away from the fan, not a windowsill in the sun — photograph it at the start and again a day later from the same angle. Frosting tends to spread and become more even. Bloom after transit reappears if it was wiped. Dye and mica patterns are identical to the pixel, because nothing about them is still moving. That comparison, rather than any single photograph, is what settles arguments.

Reaching for the heat gun before the patch has a name. Reflowing a top destroys the evidence: it melts and re-sets the surface layer, which erases frosting, erases air pockets, and creates a brand-new surface texture that may frost differently from the rest of the batch. Worse, warming the glass can close a wet spot temporarily, so the candle looks cured, ships, and the gap reopens in the courier's van. Identify first on one jar, then decide what the other forty-nine deserve.

Timing: when the patch appeared narrows it to two

Half the diagnosis is already in your head. You just have to remember when you first saw it.

Every one of the six has a characteristic moment of arrival, because each depends on a different physical process with its own clock. Trapped air is decided in the two seconds the wax leaves the pitcher. A dye band settles over the minutes while the wax is still fluid. Frosting is a slow rearrangement that needs days and thrives on temperature cycles. Bloom needs a journey. Write the date on the base of the test jar with a marker and the timeline does most of the work for you.

That last row deserves its own sentence, because it catches a lot of people out. The first burn melts the top few millimetres and lets them set again in a room you do not control, under a lid that may go straight back on. The surface a customer sees after one evening is not the surface you poured. If a candle looked perfect when it left and patchy after a burn, you are looking at the customer's room temperature, not your pour temperature — and the honest answer to them is about how soy behaves, not an apology for a defect.

What the wax, the dye, the oil and the jar each contribute

Four inputs, four different signatures. Once you know the signature, the shopping decision follows.

The wax grade

Grade choice changes the odds, not the physics. Every soy container wax on the market can frost, because frosting is the wax doing what plant fats do. What a formulation can do is make the crystals finer and slower to appear, which is what the low-frosting language on the product pages is describing. Read those claims as relative, not absolute — “minimal” has never meant “none” on any wax page anywhere, and CSI does not publish a frost-test figure you could hold it to.

The last row is there because it is a real cause of white patches that nobody suspects. Soy Pillar Wax is formulated to shrink and release from a mould — that is the whole point of a pillar wax. Pour it into glass and it does exactly what it was designed to do: pulls away from the wall, leaving pale gaps all round. A maker who bought it because it was in stock and looked like the same thing will spend weeks blaming their pour temperature. Moving from CSI 464 to CSI 468 for a genuinely frost-prone line adds ₹28.52 per 200 g candle, or ₹1,426.00 across fifty; moving out of a pillar wax into a container wax costs nothing extra at all and fixes the problem outright.

Dye and mica

Liquid candle dye is the most common source of a permanent, unfixable patch, and it is the easiest to prevent. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for dye at full melt, before the fragrance goes in, which is the right order: the wax has the most heat and the lowest viscosity then, so the colour disperses instead of streaking. At an illustrative 0.2 ml in a 200 g candle, Candle Dye Liquid at ₹236.00 for 15 ml works out at about ₹3.15 a candle, so there is no economic reason to rush the stir.

Mica is a different material with a different failure. It is a mineral powder that gives shimmer; it does not dissolve in wax, it is suspended in it. Suspended solids sink, and a slow-setting jar gives them time to do it — which is why a pale, level, slightly chalky band near the base is nearly always mica rather than anything to do with crystals. At ₹57.82 for 10 gm, half a gram of White Mica in a candle is about ₹2.89; the cost of the mistake is the whole candle, because you cannot stir a set jar.

The fragrance oil

Fragrance oil rarely makes a candle whiter. It makes it yellower. Oils containing vanillin darken white and light-coloured wax over time — the Dark Vanilla page states that plainly, and the Apple Cinnamon page lists vanillin as present and asks you to test in white wax. If your patches are cream or buff rather than white, and they are worst where the candle has seen light, you are looking at discolouration, not a white patch at all. The Sandalwood Fragrance Oil page, by contrast, states 0% vanillin and no discolouration, and a flashpoint of 203°C.

Where oil does produce white marks is at the top of the load. Push past what the wax is formulated to hold and the excess has nowhere to go: it beads at the surface, sits in micro-pockets, and shows up as mottling or a greasy sheen that reads as patchy. Two ceilings apply and the lower one governs — the wax page's maximum and the oil page's range. Sandalwood's page gives up to 10% for soy; CSI 464's page gives up to 10%; so 10% is the ceiling for that pair. Put the same oil in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, whose page allows up to 13%, and the oil's own 10% still governs. At the series unit of 200 g of wax with 16 g of oil, you are at 8% — 16 g of Sandalwood is ₹80.43 — and comfortably inside both.

The jar

Glass does two things to this problem. It decides how much you and your customer can see, and it decides how fast the wax next to it loses heat. Thick apothecary glass holds warmth and lets the wall set slowly; thin glass in an air-conditioned room strips heat out of the first millimetre and sets a shell before the body has finished moving. Cleanliness matters as much as thickness: residue and fingerprints are exactly where an air gap starts. A 2 ml wipe of Isopropyl Alcohol Spray from the 1 litre bottle is about ₹1.04 a jar, which is the cheapest line in this entire page.

Two things stand out. The first is how cheap a remelt is in rupees — ₹421.85 against a ₹12,930.44 batch is about three and a half per cent — and how expensive it is in days. In the first week of October, three per cent is nothing and a day is everything. The second is that the only genuinely costly mistake is shipping a real fault, and that is also the only one you can prevent for free, by looking at zone D with a fingernail before the lids go on.

There is a presentation lever as well, and it deserves an honest framing rather than a sales one. Switching a line from clear glass to matte hides zones B and C, and across fifty jars that is ₹1,180.00 of extra spend for jars that conceal rather than correct. If the patches are genuinely cosmetic, that is a legitimate design decision many brands make. If they are not, you have paid to stop seeing your own defects, and the customer will still find them when the candle burns down.

Indian conditions that manufacture white patches

The same jar, the same wax and the same oil behave differently in a Kochi monsoon and a Delhi December. Most Indian patch problems are seasonal, not procedural.

Frosting feeds on temperature cycling, and Indian rooms cycle hard. A workshop that reaches 34°C by three in the afternoon and drops to 24°C by six, with a ceiling fan running over the cooling tray for part of it, is putting the wax through exactly the kind of warm-cool swing that grows surface crystals. Candles stored on a shelf against a west-facing wall get the same treatment every day for a fortnight. None of this is a fault in the wax.

Pouring on the same bench in June and in December without changing anything. A Chennai workshop at 34°C and a Delhi one at 10°C are two different processes with the same recipe. The wax has not changed; the rate at which it loses heat has changed by a factor you can feel with your hand on the glass. If your patches appeared when the season did, log the room temperature on every batch card for a month before you change wax. The log costs nothing and it will tell you more than a new grade will.

Festive timing turns all of this from a cosmetic worry into a scheduling one. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November 2026. Working back a 14–21 day cure for soy — the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for at least 48 hours and ideally one to two weeks, and 14–21 days is standard practice for soy container candles — plus courier time to reach a customer before the festival, festive stock should be in the jar by about the middle of October. A batch diagnosed on 20 September can be remelted and re-poured with room to spare. The same batch diagnosed on 25 October cannot, which is the real reason to learn the six names now rather than in the middle of the rush.

One last piece of context that Indian makers ask about constantly: humidity itself does not get into wax. Soy wax and water do not mix, and a damp Mumbai afternoon is not soaking into your candle. What humidity does is condense on cool glass — a jar taken from an air-conditioned cupboard into a 32°C, 85% humidity room will fog on the inside in seconds, and if you pour into it while it is fogged, you get air gaps and occasionally a genuine moisture mark at the wall. The fix is not a dehumidifier. It is letting jars reach room temperature before they are wiped and filled.

Frequently asked questions

Is frosting on soy wax a sign of poor quality wax?
No. Frosting is soy behaving like the plant fat it is, and it appears in expensive and cheap soy alike. Grade changes the odds: the CSI 464 page describes low frosting and minimal blooming and the CSI 468 page describes minimal frosting, but no soy container wax is sold as frost-proof and CSI publishes no frost rating. What poor practice looks like is different — streaks, a settled band, or a groove at the rim.
Why do the white patches on my candles only appear a week later?
Because two of the six causes are slow. Frosting is a gradual rearrangement of surface crystals that feeds on warm-cool cycling, so a candle poured on Monday can look flawless and dusty by the following weekend, especially on a shelf that gets afternoon sun. Anything decided at the pour — trapped air, dye streaks, a mica band — is visible within the first hour and never appears later.
Can I wipe white patches off a soy candle?
Frosting and transit bloom sit on the surface and will burnish under a fingernail or a soft cloth, but they return, because the conditions that grew them have not changed. Nothing you can do from outside touches mottling, dye separation, a mica band or an air gap at the glass — those are inside the wax or behind it. Wiping a candle before photographing it is honest styling; wiping one before shipping it is not a repair.
Does fragrance oil cause white patches in soy wax?
Not white ones, usually. Oils containing vanillin cause yellowing over time — the Dark Vanilla page says so directly, and the Apple Cinnamon page lists vanillin as present. Oil above the stated ceiling can produce mottling and a greasy sheen. Where both the wax page and the oil page give a figure, the lower one governs.
Will changing to coconut soy wax stop white patches?
It may reduce frosting — the Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 page describes a rich, opaque appearance with minimal frosting and an ultra-smooth finish — and it costs ₹28.52 more per 200 g candle than CSI 464, or ₹1,426.00 across fifty. It will do nothing for dye streaks, a mica band, trapped air or a rim groove, so identify the patch before you pay for the upgrade. Note also that CSI 468 melts at 50–53°C and pours at 58–60°C, a completely different temperature routine.
Do white patches mean water got into my candle?
Almost never. Soy wax and water do not mix, and the patches makers call “wet spots” are air, not moisture — they will fade for a few minutes under warm hands, which water would not do. Genuine moisture marks are rare and come from pouring into a jar that was fogged with condensation, which happens when cold-stored glass is filled in a humid 32°C room. Letting jars reach room temperature before wiping and filling removes the cause.
