A Corporate Client Wants Premium Fragrance but a Low Candle Price — Where Can I Reduce Cost Without Making the Finished Product Feel Cheap?
Aktie
Can I use a cheaper fragrance oil and still smell premium? Sometimes, if it stays in the same family and passes a blind side-by-side test. In a 200 g jar, Sandalwood at ₹5.03 a gram costs ₹267.35 in materials, against ₹332.84 for Santal Noir at ₹9.12. Only the client's nose can say whether it passes.
Should I just reduce the fragrance load? Only within what your burn tests support. In an 85 g tin of Santal Noir, 6% instead of 8% saves ₹15.51 a candle. It is the smallest lever of the three, and the one the client is most likely to notice.
What should I never cut? The things the client touches and smells first: a clean, even top, a trimmed wick, a label that is straight, and a scent that is noticeable when the lid comes off. Also the fill you promised. A premium oil in a half-empty container reads as cheap.
The format × oil matrix
The example is a company that wants a gift candle that feels premium, with a woody, sandalwood-oud character, at ₹399.00 a piece for 300 employees. You want at least a 45% gross margin on the order, so your all-in cost ceiling is ₹399.00 × 0.55 = ₹219.45. Four oils from CSI's list fit the brief at different price tiers. Santal Noir is ₹9.12 a gram at 1 kg, White Royal Oud ₹8.10, Sandalwood ₹5.03 and Woody Oud ₹4.53. The formats are three containers with published prices and fills. The White Matte Glass Jar is the series' 200 g standard, the Golden Aluminium Tin is listed at an 85 g fill, and the Heart Cutout Velvet Jar at 50 g wax capacity.
| Format | Santal Noir | White Royal Oud | Sandalwood | Woody Oud |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 200 g White Matte Glass Jar (200 g: 16 g oil, 184 g wax · container ₹70.80) | ₹332.84 all-in ₹399.84 |
₹316.57 all-in ₹383.57 |
₹267.35 all-in ₹334.35 |
₹259.42 all-in ₹326.42 |
| 85 g Golden Aluminium Tin (85 g: 6.8 g oil, 78.2 g wax · container ₹30.00) | ₹144.76 all-in ₹196.76 ✔ |
₹137.84 all-in ₹189.84 ✔ |
₹116.92 all-in ₹168.92 ✔ |
₹113.55 all-in ₹165.55 ✔ |
| 50 g Heart Cutout Velvet Jar (50 g: 4 g oil, 46 g wax · container ₹45.00) | ₹114.93 all-in ₹166.93 ✔ |
₹110.86 all-in ₹162.86 ✔ |
₹98.56 all-in ₹150.56 ✔ |
₹96.57 all-in ₹148.57 ✔ |
Three things stand out. First, in the 200 g jar nothing fits, not even the cheapest of the four oils: Woody Oud comes to ₹326.42 all-in. The jar and the 184 g of wax cost ₹181.02 before any fragrance. Second, in the 85 g tin every oil fits, including the most expensive. Third, the heart jar holds less wax than the tin but costs more as a container, so with Santal Noir it saves only ₹29.83 while giving the client 35 g less candle. It is a presentation choice more than a cost one. The oil tier moves a 200 g candle by up to ₹73.42. The format moves the Santal Noir candle by ₹188.08.
Lever 1 — change the format
A corporate gift is judged on the unboxing. A well-finished 85 g tin with a strong scent and a good label feels considered. A 200 g jar with a thin scent feels like a compromise, however much wax it holds. So the first conversation with the client is about the format, not the fragrance. Show them the tin and the jar side by side, both filled with the premium oil, and give them the price of each. Most budget-led buyers choose the smaller candle with the better scent once they have smelled both.
| Format | Oil | Wax | Wick + container | Materials | All-in (example) | Gross margin at ₹399 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 200 g White Matte Glass Jar | 16 g · ₹145.92 | 184 g · ₹110.22 | ₹76.70 | ₹332.84 | ₹399.84 | -0.2% |
| 85 g Golden Aluminium Tin | 6.8 g · ₹62.02 | 78.2 g · ₹46.84 | ₹35.90 | ₹144.76 | ₹196.76 | 50.7% |
| 50 g Heart Cutout Velvet Jar | 4 g · ₹36.48 | 46 g · ₹27.55 | ₹50.90 | ₹114.93 | ₹166.93 | 58.2% |
The tin earns a 50.7% gross margin at ₹399.00, a markup of 102.8% on its all-in cost. The 200 g jar version would make no profit at all at that price (-0.2%). Gross margin is profit divided by price, and markup is profit divided by cost, so keep the two separate when you report the numbers to yourself. To offer the client the 200 g jar with Santal Noir, the price would need to be about ₹726.98 to hold the same 45% margin. That makes a useful second option on the quote, and it shows the client why the tin is the value choice.
Lever 2 — tier within the family
If the client is committed to the 200 g jar, the oil is the next lever. The four oils here share a woody, sandalwood-oud direction at very different prices. In the 200 g jar at 8% they cost ₹145.92, ₹129.65, ₹80.43 and ₹72.50 of oil per candle. We have not published throw measurements for any of them, and price does not measure how well an oil performs in your wax. Choose between them with a blind burn, not with the price tag. At the very top of the catalogue, a designer-inspired oil like Club De Nuit Intense Inspired at ₹24.06 a gram would put ₹384.90 of oil into the same jar, and ₹571.82 of materials in total. That is worth knowing if a client asks for "that perfume" by name.
Lever 3 — load, carefully
Load is the lever makers reach for first and should reach for last. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13% by the wax maker, which is a formulation ceiling, not a target. Our default is 8%. Dropping to 6% saves oil, but a premium scent that barely reads when the lid comes off is exactly what "feels cheap" means. Here is what the load does to the tin of Santal Noir:
| Load | Oil | Wax | Oil cost | Materials | All-in (example) | Gross margin at ₹399 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6% | 5.1 g | 79.9 g | ₹46.51 | ₹130.27 | ₹182.27 | 54.3% |
| 8% | 6.8 g | 78.2 g | ₹62.02 | ₹144.76 | ₹196.76 | 50.7% |
| 10% | 8.5 g | 76.5 g | ₹77.52 | ₹159.24 | ₹211.24 | 47.1% |
Each two-point step moves the tin by about ₹15.51, which is small against a ₹399.00 price. Put the other way round, the premium oil at a full load in the tin is affordable. So test at 8%, and move to 6% only if the blind burn shows no loss of character. If anything, consider 10% for a small format that needs to fill a room quickly, as long as the wick keeps up and your burn tests show a clean burn. What makes it feel premium — cheaply
Once the cost is inside the budget, a few small things decide whether the gift reads as premium. Most of them cost time rather than money.
Costing the 300-gift order
Say the client picks Santal Noir in the tin. For 300 gifts at 8%, each tin holds 6.8 g of oil and 78.2 g of wax. With a 4% allowance on wax and oil, 5% spare wicks and 2% spare tins (working assumptions), in whole CSI packs:
| Item | Need | Packs | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Santal Noir Fragrance Oil | 2.122 kg | 2 × 1 kg + 2 × 100 g | ₹20,078.00 |
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | 24.398 kg | 5 × 5 kg | ₹14,975.00 |
| Golden Aluminium Tin, 85 g | 306 tins | 26 × 12-pack | ₹9,360.00 |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 | 315 wicks | 320 wicks | ₹1,888.00 |
| Premium Packing Tissue Paper | 300 sheets | 3 × 100 sheets | ₹1,950.00 |
| Total | ₹48,251.00 |
That is ₹160.84 of CSI materials per gift, including the tissue and all allowances and leftovers. The box, label and delivery are your own quotes. If the client comes back asking for a lower price at a higher quantity, go back to the cost lines rather than the scent. CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. Recommending a smaller format means we sell you less than half the wax and oil per gift. We recommend it anyway where the budget calls for it, because a premium scent in a smaller candle keeps both the client's brief and your margin intact.
Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026. Tin, velvet jar, tissue and tool prices were pulled 24–25 September 2026. Eco wick, White Matte Jar, scale and thermometer figures are Blog 760's, verified 10 September 2026. Per-candle figures are arithmetic on those prices at the 1 kg oil rate, shown to two decimals.
Packaging, labour and the 45% margin target are examples to replace with your own figures. The allowances are working assumptions. No throw measurements have been published for these oils, so the tier choice must come from your own blind burn.
