Each step is narrower than the one above it because the tolerance narrows as you go. You can be casual about how you melt the wax. You cannot be casual about the ten-degree window in which the fragrance goes in, and you certainly cannot be casual about the two minutes of stirring that follow it.

Too hot vs too cool: two different failures, one invisible

Nobody adds fragrance at the wrong temperature on purpose. They add it at whatever temperature the wax happened to be when they finished weighing the oil, which is not the same thing as a decision.

The reason this step is the one most makers get wrong is that molten soy wax gives you no feedback. It looks the same at 75°C as it does at 95°C — clear, thin, moving. There is no colour change, no smell, no viscosity shift you can read across a ten or fifteen degree spread. So the step gets done by feel, and "by feel" in practice means "whenever I was ready", which drifts by fifteen degrees across a single afternoon of pouring. Both errors are real, both are common, and only one of them can be fixed.

Too hot: you lose the top notes, permanently

A fragrance oil is not one substance. It is a blend of dozens of aroma molecules with very different volatilities, deliberately arranged so that the light ones announce the scent and the heavy ones sustain it. The light ones — citrus terpenes, green notes, delicate floral facets, the sparkle in a bergamot or a lemon — are the first to evaporate when you introduce them to wax that is hotter than the specified window. They leave through the top of the jug, in the minute or two before the wax begins to set, and they do not come back.

This is why overheating is the more damaging of the two errors. It is not recoverable. You cannot cure the brightness back into a candle, you cannot re-melt and re-dose it, and you cannot compensate with a bigger wick. What you are left with is a candle that smells like the base of the fragrance without its opening — flat, slightly muddy, and unmistakably "off" against the oil you smelled in the bottle. Makers usually diagnose this as a weak oil and change supplier, when the oil never reached the candle intact.

Citrus and light florals are the canaries. If your Citrus Lemon or Lavender candles read dull while your Vanilla Bean and Sandalwood candles are fine, the fault is almost certainly heat, not the fragrance. Heavy gourmand and woody molecules survive an overheated addition; light ones do not. A catalogue where only the bright scents underperform is a temperature problem wearing a fragrance costume. Too cool: the oil never binds

Adding fragrance below the specified window fails in the opposite direction and, mercifully, more visibly. Soy wax needs to be hot enough and fluid enough for the oil to go into solution. Add it below that point and the two do not fully combine — the oil remains a separate phase suspended in a wax that is already thickening around it.

You will see one or more of four things. The set wax shows streaks or marbling where the oil sat in bands. The surface sweats, developing beads or a slick oily film a day or two after the pour. The fragrance pools at the bottom of the vessel, so the top third of the candle is barely scented and the bottom is over-concentrated. And, tying all of these together, the candle reads weak when lit, because throw depends on fragrance being evenly distributed through the melt pool — a melt pool that is 3% oil at the top of the burn cannot behave like a candle dosed at 8%.

The diagnostic that separates the two
Cut a cooled candle in half vertically. If the wax is uniform and the scent is simply flat, you added too hot. If you can see streaks, a darker oily band, or wetness concentrated near the base, you added too cool or under-stirred. The first is a scent fault with a clean cross-section; the second is a physical fault you can see with your eyes.
The CSI principle
Too cool is a batch you can re-melt. Too hot is a batch you have already lost.
Wax that separated because it was too cool can usually be brought back to the specified range, re-stirred for two full minutes and re-poured. Wax that flashed off its top notes cannot be repaired by any process, because the molecules that carried the character of the fragrance are no longer in the jug. If you are going to err, err downward — then fix it.

The full temperature sequence, start to set

Pour steadily into a room-temperature vesselOne continuous, unhurried movement down the inside wall of the jar. Stopping and restarting leaves a visible line in the set wax. A pouring jug with a spout makes this repeatable in a way that tipping a saucepan never will. Jars brought in from a cold store room should be allowed to reach room temperature first.

Control the cooling environmentLeave the candles undisturbed on a wooden or insulated surface, away from fans, air conditioning, open windows and cold stone or steel counters. Drafts and cold surfaces cause cracking, frosting, wet spots and poor glass adhesion. None of these are fragrance faults, and all of them get blamed on the oil.
The cooling step is not optional in an Indian workshop. A ceiling fan running over a tray of freshly poured jars is the most common cause of cracked and pitted tops in home production, and an air-conditioned room set to 18°C is the second. If you must work in a cooled room, pour into a closed cupboard or a cardboard box laid on its side and leave the candles there overnight.
