Pillar & Mould · Manufacturing
At production scale a pillar line is mostly wax by weight and mostly oil by cost, and it is often limited by moulds rather than either. This page sizes runs from 100 to 1,000 pillars, shows what buying oil by the kilo really saves on each pillar, and prices a 500-pillar run at listed rates.
10 kg
of fragrance oil for 500 illustrative 250 g pillars at 8%, plus 115 kg of wax · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How much fragrance oil do I need for 500 pillar candles? For 500 illustrative 250 g pillars at 8%: 10 kg of oil and 115 kg of wax, plus a 3–5% working allowance. For 400 g pillars, 16 kg of oil and 184 kg of wax. Run sizes covers 100 to 1,000.

Is bulk fragrance oil cheaper for pillar production? Only for some oils. Lemongrass and Lime saves ₹14.00 per 250 g pillar at the 1 kg rate; Woody Oud saves nothing, because its 100 g and 1 kg cost the same per gram. Beyond the listed 1 kg packs, ask for a quote on WhatsApp. No discount figure is published.

What limits pillar output? Usually moulds, not materials. Each mould holds one pillar until it has set and been demoulded. Demould time depends on your wax and pillar size and is not published, so measure it. Moulds, the hidden constraint works through it.

What does a 500-pillar run cost in materials? At listed prices, ₹1,55,369.30 for 10.5 kg of oil, 120 kg of Soy Pillar Wax, 550 braided wicks, 25 moulds and sealer. That is ₹310.74 per pillar including the moulds, before dye, labour, packaging, freight and GST.
The short answer
Run maths: Oil = pillars × weight × load; wax = pillars × weight − oil. 500 × 250 g at 8% = 10 kg oil + 115 kg wax. Add 3–5% as a working allowance.
Kilo saving: Per 250 g pillar at 1 kg vs 100 g rates: Lemongrass and Lime ₹14.00 · Pumpkin Spice ₹11.80 · Woody Oud ₹0.00.
Throughput: Pillars per day = moulds × pours per mould per day. Pours per day depend on demould time, which you must measure; the 25-mould figure on this page is illustrative.
A 500-pillar run, in materials — 500 × illustrative 250 g pillars at 8% Oil 10.0 kg needed 10.5 kg bought (+5%) 3 scents · 1 kg packs Wax 115 kg needed 120 kg bought 12 × 10 kg Soy Pillar Wax Wicks 500 needed 550 bought braided, ₹12.00 each Moulds 25 per day ÷ 1 pour = 25 moulds illustrative throughput Materials at listed prices: ₹1,55,369.30 · ₹310.74 per pillar including moulds Volumes beyond the listed packs are quoted on WhatsApp; no discount figure is published. Pillar weight, load and pours per mould per day are illustrative — measure your own.
All four boxes come from one set of inputs: 500 pillars, an illustrative 250 g weight and an 8% working load, plus a 5% allowance on oil. The mould count assumes 25 pillars a day from one pour per mould per day, which is illustrative. Your real demould time sets it.
Straight answer
How should I buy fragrance oil in bulk for pillar candle manufacturing?
Plan the run in grams first. A pillar at an 8% working load holds 8% of its weight in oil, so 500 illustrative 250 g pillars need 10 kg of oil and 115 kg of wax, plus a 3–5% allowance. Then buy each scent the cheapest way the listed catalogue allows. For oils with a real kilo break, such as Lemongrass and Lime (₹5.20/g at 1 kg against ₹5.90 at 100 g) or Pumpkin Spice (₹5.31 against ₹5.90), buy the kilo. For flat-priced oils such as Woody Oud (₹4.53 at every size from 100 g), the kilo is convenience, not a discount. Soy Pillar Wax is ₹0.60 a gram at every bag size, so 10 kg bags save handling, not money. Past the listed packs, ask for a WhatsApp quote; no discount figure is published. Then check the real limit, which is usually moulds. Each one holds one pillar until it can be demoulded, so output is moulds × pours per day. At listed prices, our 500-pillar run costs ₹1,55,369.30 in materials, including 25 moulds.
One line: size the oil and wax by arithmetic, buy the kilo only where it breaks, and count your moulds before you promise a date.
The two biggest lines in a pillar run: Soy Pillar Wax 10 kg at ₹6,000.00 (230 g in each of 43.48 illustrative 250 g pillars at 8%) and Lemongrass and Lime 1 kg at ₹5,200.00, which scents 50 of those pillars at ₹5.20 a gram.

Run sizes: oil, wax and wicks from 100 to 1,000 pillars

A pillar run is three sums and one allowance. Do them before you order anything.

The inputs are the number of pillars, the pillar weight and the load. Oil = pillars × weight × load. Wax = pillars × weight − oil. Wicks = one per pillar, plus spares. The table works these out for four run sizes and two illustrative pillar weights. The weights are examples, because CSI does not publish mould volumes, so weigh a wax fill of your own mould and redo the sums. The load is an 8% working point from your own tests. CSI does not publish a fragrance ceiling for its pillar wax.

8% working load · +4% = midpoint of the 3–5% working allowance · wax cost at Soy Pillar Wax ₹0.60 / g
Material quantities by run size
Run Oil needed Oil with allowance Wax needed Wax with allowance Wax cost (needed) Wicks
100 × 250 g 2.00 kg 2.08 kg 23.00 kg 23.92 kg ₹13,800.00 100
100 × 400 g 3.20 kg 3.33 kg 36.80 kg 38.27 kg ₹22,080.00 100
250 × 250 g 5.00 kg 5.20 kg 57.50 kg 59.80 kg ₹34,500.00 250
250 × 400 g 8.00 kg 8.32 kg 92.00 kg 95.68 kg ₹55,200.00 250
500 × 250 g 10.00 kg 10.40 kg 115.00 kg 119.60 kg ₹69,000.00 500
500 × 400 g 16.00 kg 16.64 kg 184.00 kg 191.36 kg ₹1,10,400.00 500
1,000 × 250 g 20.00 kg 20.80 kg 230.00 kg 239.20 kg ₹1,38,000.00 1,000
1,000 × 400 g 32.00 kg 33.28 kg 368.00 kg 382.72 kg ₹2,20,800.00 1,000

Two patterns stand out. Wax is 92% of the weight of every pillar at 8%, so at 1,000 × 400 g you are moving 368 kg of wax. That is 37 bags of 10 kg, and storage, handling and freight matter as much as price. Oil is only 8% of the weight, but it costs nearly as much as the wax. With the three oils on this page, a 250 g pillar holds ₹90.62 to ₹118.00 of oil against ₹138.00 of wax, and a premium oil overtakes the wax. The next section shows how much the pack size changes that. Wick count is simply the pillar count. At ₹12.00 each at every pack size, braided wicks cost the same per pillar whether you buy 10 or 1,000. Wick size for your pillar diameter is not published, so fix it with burn tests before the run, not during it.

Order oil in whole packs, not exact grams
Oil comes in 1 kg, 500 g and 100 g packs, not in 10.4 kg. Round each scent up to whole packs, check that the rounding covers your allowance, and keep any spare sealed for the next run. For oils whose 500 g carries the same per-gram rate as the kilo, the 500 g is a useful way to top up without an extra kilo on the shelf.

What the kilo actually saves per pillar

Bulk buying is supposed to lower unit cost. On CSI's listed prices it does for some oils and not for others. Of 91 oils that list both sizes, 52 cost within 1% per gram at 1 kg and at 100 g, and 24 save 5% or more. The table converts that into rupees per pillar for three oils suited to a manufacturing line: one flat, two with a real break.

8% load · oil at 100 g and 1 kg rates · total = oil at 1 kg + Soy Pillar Wax + braided wick · excludes mould, dye, labour, packaging, freight, GST
Per-pillar oil cost at 100 g and 1 kg rates
Oil Pillar Oil at 100 g rate Oil at 1 kg rate Pillar total at 1 kg rate Saved per pillar
Woody Oud 250 g ₹90.62 ₹90.62 ₹240.62 ₹0.00
Woody Oud 400 g ₹145.00 ₹145.00 ₹377.80 ₹0.00

Lemongrass and Lime 400 g ₹188.80 ₹166.40 ₹399.20 ₹22.40
Pumpkin Spice 250 g ₹118.00 ₹106.20 ₹256.20 ₹11.80
Pumpkin Spice 400 g ₹188.80 ₹169.92 ₹402.72 ₹18.88

On a 500-pillar run of 250 g pillars, Lemongrass and Lime at the kilo rate saves ₹7,000.00 against 100 g bottles, and Pumpkin Spice ₹5,900.00. Woody Oud saves ₹0.00. Its 100 g, 500 g and 1 kg are all ₹4.53 a gram. For Woody Oud the kilo is still the right production pack, because ten 100 g bottles are ten times the handling. But it is not a discount, and you should not plan it as one.

Note one detail. Pumpkin Spice's 500 g costs the same ₹5.90 a gram as its 100 g, so its whole saving sits at the kilo. Lemongrass and Lime's 500 g is already at the kilo rate of ₹5.20. Read each oil's full ladder, not just its end points. Buy 1 Kg Fragrance Oil for Pillar and Mould Candle Making goes through the kilo decision for pillar and mould oils in more detail.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. The easy advice for a supplier is "manufacturers should buy everything by the kilo, or more". For more than half our oils, the kilo costs the same per gram as the 100 g, so it saves you nothing but reorders. On a first production run, buy your break oils by the kilo and your flat oils in the packs that exactly cover the run. Keep the spare cash for moulds, which are usually what limits your output. Buy multiple kilos of a flat oil when you are sure of the next run, not before.

Moulds, the hidden constraint

You can buy 120 kg of wax in an afternoon. You cannot pour it faster than your moulds let go.

Every pillar mould holds one pillar from the pour until the pillar has set enough to demould. How long that takes depends on your wax, pillar size, room temperature and pour temperature. CSI does not publish it, and it is the single number that decides your daily output. Measure it on your pilot run: pour, note the time, and demould at intervals until a pillar comes out clean every time. That tells you how many pours each mould can give in a working day.

Illustrative only · pours per mould per day must be measured on your own pilot run
Moulds needed for a 500-pillar run

10 50 50 25 ₹47,141.00
20 25 25 13 ₹23,570.50
25 20 20 10 ₹18,856.40
40 12.5 13 7 ₹12,256.66

The Pillar Candle Mould costs ₹942.82 in either size (Tall 11.2 × 6.3 cm or Short 8.6 × 6.5 cm). The Ribbed Pillar Mould costs ₹1,060.82 (5 × 10 cm) or ₹1,414.82 (5 × 15 cm), and the 5 × 7 cm was out of stock on the pull date. Mould quantities matter here. For more than a few of one mould, check stock on WhatsApp before you promise a delivery date, because a production run cannot use a mould that is not on the shelf. Remember mould wear too. Silicone moulds dull with use, and a run of hundreds of pours will show you when one needs retiring. Fragrance Oils for Silicone Mould Candles covers mould care.

The CSI principle
Output = moulds × pours per mould per day.
Oil and wax set what a run costs. Moulds and demould time set how long it takes. Measure the second on a pilot before you quote a delivery date to a buyer.

Pilot run, then production

Never let the first pillar of a new oil, wax, mould or wick be the first of 500. A pilot run of 10 to 20 pillars, poured exactly as production will be, catches problems while they cost rupees, not lakhs. Here is the sequence.

1
Lock the recipe on a pilotSame wax, mould, wick, load and pour method as production. For the load, use the ladder in How Much Fragrance Oil Should I Use in Pillar Candles?; for scent comparisons, Strong Fragrance Oils for Scented Mould Candles.
2
Measure demould time and pours per dayThis sets your mould count. Write it down per mould type.
3
Shelf-test the pilotLeave pilot pillars in a warm room for one to two weeks. Check the surface for oil beading (sweating) and for colour change. These are general practice checks, not CSI measurements.
4
Buy one lot of each oil for the runIn general practice, makers ask for a whole run's oil at once so it comes from the same lot. Ask on WhatsApp when you order, and mention quantities beyond the listed packs for a quote.
5
Store oil and wax properlyKeep oil tightly closed, cool and out of sunlight. Keep wax bags sealed and dry. General practice, not a published shelf-life.
6
Pour in batches you can traceLabel each batch's base with the date, scent and load. If a customer reports a problem, you know which pillars to check.
The run that sweated in April. A maker pours 400 pillars in January, where they look perfect in a cool workshop. By April, the stock in a warm storeroom is beaded with oil. A pilot shelf-tested in a warm room would have shown it. In general practice the fix is a lower load, a longer cure or a different oil-and-wax pairing. None of those can be applied to 400 pillars that are already poured. Shelf-test the pilot in the heat your stock will actually meet.

A 500-pillar run, priced

Here is a complete run at listed prices: 500 illustrative 250 g pillars at 8% across three scents. The oil is bought with about 5% allowance (10 kg needed, 10.5 kg bought). The wax is 120 kg against 115 kg needed. There are 550 wicks and 25 moulds (the illustrative 1-pour-a-day, 20-day case). For volumes like this, ask for a quote on WhatsApp. No discount figure is published, so the table shows listed prices as a baseline to compare the quote against.

Candle Mold Sealer — 2 2 ₹944.00
Listed-price total ₹1,55,369.30

That is ₹310.74 per pillar with the moulds included. Moulds are reusable, so on the next run the per-pillar figure drops to the oil, wax and wick cost alone: ₹261.71 per pillar here. Dye, labour, packaging, freight and GST are extra. The oil is 39.9% of the consumables, and wax 55.0%. Wax is the larger line here because these are mid-priced oils. Swap in a premium oil and the balance flips, so quote oil and wax together on the next run.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A manufacturing page is the natural place to sell kilos. This one shows that for flat-priced oils the kilo saves nothing per pillar, that bigger wax bags save nothing per gram, and that moulds rather than materials usually limit a run.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. Mould and sealer prices come from the 24–25 September 2026 catalogue pull, and wick prices from Blog 760's figures verified on 10 September 2026, rechecked on 25 September. Run quantities, per-pillar savings and totals are plain arithmetic, shown so you can check them.

Pillar weights, the 8% load, the 3–5% allowance, pours per mould per day and the 25-mould case are illustrative working figures; mould volumes, demould times and a pillar-wax ceiling are not published. Lot, storage, sweating and colour notes are general practice. Volumes beyond the listed packs are quoted on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926; no discount figure is published.

Frequently asked questions

How much fragrance oil do I need for 1,000 pillar candles?
For 1,000 illustrative 250 g pillars at 8%: 20 kg of oil and 230 kg of wax, plus a 3–5% working allowance. For 400 g pillars: 32 kg of oil and 368 kg of wax. Weigh your mould's wax fill and redo the sums.
Where can I buy bulk fragrance oil for candle manufacturing in India?
CSI lists oils up to 1 kg per pack (73 in stock at 1 kg on 24 September 2026), with Soy Pillar Wax to 10 kg, braided wicks to 1,000 and pillar moulds. For volumes beyond the listed packs, ask for a quote on WhatsApp. No discount figure is published.
Is 1 kg fragrance oil cheaper per pillar?
Only where the oil has a kilo break. Per 250 g pillar at 8%, Lemongrass and Lime saves ₹14.00 and Pumpkin Spice ₹11.80 at the 1 kg rate. Woody Oud saves nothing. 52 of 91 oils are within 1% per gram at both sizes.
How many pillar moulds do I need for production?
Divide pillars per day by pours per mould per day. Pours per day depend on your demould time, which is not published, so measure it on a pilot run. At one pour a day, 500 pillars in 20 days needs 25 moulds.
How much wax do I need for 500 pillar candles?
For 500 illustrative 250 g pillars at 8%, 115 kg of wax, or 184 kg for 400 g pillars. Soy Pillar Wax is ₹0.60 a gram at every bag size, so 12 × 10 kg bags (₹72,000.00) cover the 250 g run with an allowance.
How should I store bulk fragrance oil?
In general practice: tightly closed, cool, dark and away from heat sources, with the lot and date labelled. CSI does not publish a shelf-life figure in this data. Ask on WhatsApp if you need guidance for a specific oil.
