Quick answers — read this first
Does assembling my own wicks save money? It depends entirely on which bought wick you are replacing. The Braided Wick Roll with 100 wick tabs at ₹706.82 carries 100 tabs, so it makes 100 wicks at ₹7.07 each. That is ₹1.17 dearer than an Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) at ₹5.90 — so against that wick, in-house loses before you spend a minute. Against Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made at ₹12.00 it is ₹4.93 cheaper, and that difference is your entire labour budget.

What is my time worth in this comparison? Exactly the material saving, divided by how long a wick takes you. Against the ₹12.00 wick the saving is ₹4.93 a wick, so at 30 wicks an hour your labour budget is ₹147.95 an hour, at 60 it is ₹295.91 and at 120 it is ₹591.82. Whether that beats what your time is worth is your figure — labour is not a CSI cost and this page puts no number on it.

How many wicks does the 61-metre roll really make? One hundred, because it ships with 100 tabs and the tabs are the binding limit. At a 12 cm cut those 100 wicks use only 12 metres of the 61, leaving 49 metres of wick with nothing to crimp it into. The wick material itself is only ₹1.39 a wick at that length — it is the hardware, not the cotton, that sets the price.

What is a wick worth as a share of the candle? Small, which is the uncomfortable part of this question. On 200 g of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at 8% with Orchard Pear Fragrance Oil, the scented wax alone is ₹161.29. A ₹5.90 wick is 3.53% of that plus the wick; a ₹12.00 one is 6.92%. Trimming a wick line is a real saving, but it is a small lever next to wax, fragrance and vessel.
The short answer
The order of operations: price the materials first. In-house is ₹7.07 a wick from the roll-and-tabs kit. Bought finished, a C1 wick is ₹5.90 and a ready-made braided one is ₹12.00. Only where in-house is cheaper does a labour question exist at all.
The labour budget, never a labour rate: against the ₹12.00 wick the material saving is ₹4.93, which is ₹295.91 an hour at 60 wicks an hour. Your own hourly cost is a blank on this page — CSI does not sell labour and will not assume a figure for it.
The limit nobody prices: the roll is sold with 100 tabs, so it makes 100 wicks whatever length you cut. At 12 cm that strands 49 of the 61 metres. CSI does not sell wick tabs separately, so the leftover roll needs a tab source of your own.

What it shows: one wick priced four ways on a single rupee scale — bought finished as an Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) at ₹5.90, assembled from the Braided Wick Roll with 100 wick tabs kit at ₹7.07, bought finished as Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made at ₹12.00, and the bare wick material at a 12 cm cut at ₹1.39. The dashed line is the C1 benchmark. The open dashed box on the last bar is where your own tab source and your own minutes go, and it is left empty on purpose: neither is a CSI cost. Deliberately left out: any labour rate, any assumption about how fast you work, and any claim about which of these wicks suits a given candle diameter — wick size is decided by melt pool diameter and a test burn, not by price.
Straight answer
How do I compare the material saving on home-made wicks against the labour they take?
Run the material half first, because it decides whether the labour half exists. CSI sells finished wicks and it sells a roll with tabs, and the two sides are close enough that the answer flips depending on which finished wick you are replacing. The Braided Wick Roll with 100 wick tabs is ₹706.82 and carries 61 metres of braided cotton with 100 metal tabs. The tabs are the binding constraint, not the cotton, so the kit as sold makes 100 wicks at ₹7.07 each. Now compare. An Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) is ₹5.90 a wick, the same rate at every C1 pack size. Assembling is therefore ₹1.17 dearer per wick than buying, before you have picked up a pair of scissors — across 100 wicks, ₹116.82 spent to give yourself work. No labour rate rescues that, because the labour is on the wrong side of the ledger. Against Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made at ₹12.00 a wick the picture reverses: assembling saves ₹4.93 a wick, ₹493.18 across a hundred, and that is the number your minutes have to beat. Convert it at your own speed rather than at an assumed one: ₹147.95 an hour at 30 wicks an hour, ₹295.91 at 60, ₹591.82 at 120. Whether those figures clear your own hourly cost is the one input this page will not supply, because labour is not something CSI sells and no honest number for it exists on the store. Two practical footnotes. First, both routes still need something to fix the wick to the base of the vessel — Candle Wick Stickers are ₹100.00 for 40, ₹2.50 each — and because that cost lands on both sides it cancels out of the comparison entirely. Second, the roll strands material: cut at 12 cm, the 100 tabs use 12 of the 61 metres and the remaining 49 metres has no hardware to go with it. CSI does not sell tabs on their own, so that leftover only becomes wicks if you have a tab source of your own.
One line: In-house is ₹7.07 a wick: ₹1.17 dearer than a finished C1 wick and ₹4.93 cheaper than a ready-made braided one. Labour only matters in the second case.
The two sides, priced. Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) at ₹5.90 a wick and Thick (C2) at ₹9.44, each the same rate at every pack size of that thickness · Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made at ₹12.00 a wick · Braided Wick Roll with 100 wick tabs at ₹706.82, 61 metres with 100 tabs, which works out at ₹7.07 a wick. What CSI actually sells on each side of this question

Make-or-buy is only a real question when both sides are genuinely on the shelf.

This comparison is worth running because both halves exist here, priced, rather than one half being a hypothetical. On the buy side, Eco Candle Wicks come in Thin (C1) and Thick (C2), described on the page as cotton and paper fibres made for natural waxes, and Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made are described as engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm at a stated height of 10.16 cm. On the make side, the Braided Wick Roll with 100 wick tabs pairs a spool of braided cotton with 100 metal tabs, and its page says plainly what the tabs are for: a stable base that makes the wick easier to secure in the container.

One thing to establish before you cost anything, and it is worth a message rather than an assumption. The roll product’s page states explicitly that 100 metal tabs are included and that they attach to one end of the wick. The finished-wick pages describe the wick itself and do not state whether a tab is already attached, and this page will not infer one either way. If your costing turns on that detail — and a make-or-buy costing does — ask on WhatsApp before you commit to a pack.

The CSI principle
Price the materials before you price your minutes.
Against a ₹5.90 finished wick the in-house route is ₹1.17 dearer, and no hourly rate can rescue a material deficit.

The per-wick arithmetic, and the number that ends the argument

Divide by the tabs, not by the metres. That single choice decides the answer.

The kit costs ₹706.82 and contains two things in fixed proportions: 61 metres of braided cotton and 100 tabs. Almost everyone divides by the metres, gets ₹11.59 a metre, multiplies by a 12 cm cut and concludes that a wick costs ₹1.39. That figure is true about the cotton and false about the wick, because a length of cotton with no tab on the end is not a wick you can stand in a jar. Divide by the hardware instead and the kit makes 100 wicks at ₹7.07.

Put the two numbers side by side and the argument is over in one line. A finished Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) is ₹5.90. Assembling your own from the kit is ₹7.07. In-house is ₹1.17 more expensive per wick — ₹116.82 across a hundred — and that is before your scissors, your ruler, your time and the wicks you crimp badly on the first afternoon. When the material side loses, labour cannot win the argument; it can only make the loss larger.

Priced above: Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) ₹5.90 a wick; Braided Wick Roll with 100 wick tabs ₹706.82 ÷ 100 tabs = ₹7.07; Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made ₹12.00 a wick; roll wick at ₹11.59 a metre × 0.12 m = ₹1.39; Candle Wick Stickers ₹100.00 for 40, ₹2.50 each. Live CSI pricing, September 2026, taxes included. The sticker appears on every row because both routes need something to hold the wick to the base, and a line that lands on both sides of a comparison cancels — it is shown here only so the totals are complete. Labour has its own row and no number, because it is not a CSI cost.

It is worth keeping the size of the prize in view. On 200 g of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at ₹507.40 a kilogram in the 5 kg pack with 16 g of Orchard Pear Fragrance Oil at ₹3.74 a gram, the scented wax alone is ₹161.29. A ₹5.90 wick is 3.53% of wax, fragrance and wick together; the ₹12.00 wick is 6.92%. Even winning this argument outright moves a candle by a rupee or two. That is a real saving at volume and a poor use of an afternoon at ten candles a week, and knowing which of those you are is most of the decision.

Costing home-made wicks at the price of the cotton. ₹1.39 of braided cotton is not a wick, it is an input to one. Leaving out the tab makes in-house look six times cheaper than it is and produces a decision that reverses the moment you count what is actually in the kit. If you do have a separate tab supply, cost it explicitly at your own price — it is not a CSI product and no figure for it appears on this page.

The 100-tab ceiling, and the metres it strands

Sixty-one metres sounds generous until you count what can be crimped.

The roll is sold with 61 metres of wick and 100 tabs, and those two quantities are wildly mismatched for container work. At any cut length a container candle actually uses, you run out of tabs long before you run out of cotton. The table below runs five cut lengths through both limits so the gap is visible.

The roll against its own two limits
What 61 metres and 100 tabs really make
Cut length Wick material a wick Wicks the 61 m could supply Metres the 100 tabs use Metres left with no tab
8 cm ₹0.93 762 8 m 53 m
10 cm ₹1.16 610 10 m 51 m
12 cm ₹1.39 508 12 m 49 m
15 cm ₹1.74 407 15 m 46 m
20 cm ₹2.32 305 20 m 41 m
Computed above: Braided Wick Roll with 100 wick tabs at ₹706.82 for 61 metres and 100 tabs, which is ₹11.59 a metre, live CSI pricing September 2026. Cut lengths are the reader’s own choice and are shown across a realistic range rather than recommended — the right length depends on your vessel depth plus enough to trim, which is your measurement. CSI does not list wick tabs as a separate product, so the metres in the last column have no hardware on the store to pair with them.

At a 12 cm cut the kit uses 12 of its 61 metres and leaves 49. Treated honestly, that is either a write-off or a reason to find a tab supplier, and it is the single biggest reason the in-house route prices badly against a ₹5.90 wick. If you do find tabs elsewhere, the arithmetic changes completely: the wick material is only ₹1.39 and the remaining 49 metres would make around 408 more wicks. That version of the sum is worth running, but it runs on a price this page cannot supply.

THE HONEST USE FOR A WICK ROLL
The roll earns its place when you need a length no finished wick gives you — a deep vessel, a tall pillar, a multi-wick arrangement where you are still finding the geometry, or a test rig where cutting six lengths in an afternoon is the point. Its page makes exactly that case: custom-sized wicks for your own container. Buying it to undercut a ₹5.90 wick on price is the one job it is not good at, and its own page does not claim otherwise.
A spool of cotton is not a hundred wicks. A hundred tabs is.

What your minutes are worth, without anyone assuming a wage

A labour budget is a fact about the materials. A labour rate is a fact about you.

Where in-house does win on materials — against the ₹12.00 Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made — the saving is ₹4.93 a wick, or ₹493.18 over the kit’s hundred. That figure is the budget: the most your assembly time can cost before the exercise stops paying. Converting it into an hourly figure needs one input, and it is yours: how many finished wicks you produce in an hour, measured rather than imagined.

Labour budget · what the material saving buys you per hour
Against the ₹12.00 ready-made wick, and against the ₹5.90 C1 wick
Wicks an hour (your figure) Budget against the ₹12.00 wick Against the ₹5.90 C1 wick Your own hourly cost

90 ₹443.86 an hour ₹105.14 an hour short Your figure
120 ₹591.82 an hour ₹140.18 an hour short Your figure
Computed above: a material saving of ₹4.93 a wick against Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made at ₹12.00, and a material deficit of ₹1.17 a wick against Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) at ₹5.90, each multiplied by the assembly speeds in the first column. The speeds are the reader’s own units, shown across a range rather than recommended. The last column is blank and stays blank: labour is not a CSI cost, CSI publishes no wage figure, and this page will not supply one, not even a typical one. Live CSI pricing, September 2026, taxes included.

Read the third column carefully, because it is the one that decides most cases. Against a C1 wick every row is negative: at 60 wicks an hour you are ₹70.09 an hour worse off on materials alone, and then you pay yourself on top of that. There is no assembly speed at which a material deficit turns into a saving, which is why the material half has to be settled first. The second column is the only place a genuine make-or-buy question lives, and even there the budget is modest unless you are fast.

Treating your own time as free because you are not paying anyone. If you are a one-person brand, an hour spent crimping tabs is an hour not spent pouring, photographing or answering a wholesale enquiry, and that is a real price even though no money moves. The honest way to fill the last column is to ask what else that hour would have produced — not to write zero. Writing zero makes every make-or-buy comparison come out the same way, which is how you can tell it is the wrong number.
Forgetting the first-batch learning curve. Your first fifty crimps are slower and some of them are wrong, so a rate measured on day one understates the cost and a rate measured after a thousand overstates the saving available to a small maker. Time a batch of fifty after you have already done a hundred, and use that. And remember the wicks you spoil: at ₹7.07 each, ten ruined crimps are ₹70.68, which is most of an hour’s budget at 30 wicks an hour.

When assembling genuinely does pay

There is a real case here. It is just not the one the question usually assumes.

Three situations make the in-house route sensible, and none of them is “to save money against a C1 wick”. Work out which one you are in before you buy the roll, because they need different quantities and different tooling.

1
1. You need a length no finished wick suppliesA deep vessel or a tall pillar needs more wick than a pre-cut one gives you, and a roll is the only way to get it. Here the comparison is not against ₹5.90 at all — the finished wick simply does not fit the job, so the roll’s ₹11.59 a metre is the only price on the table.
2
2. You are still finding the geometryDuring wick testing, being able to cut ten lengths in an afternoon is worth more than a rupee a wick. Use the roll as a test rig, settle on a size, then buy that size finished. Pair it with the wick guide by diameter and a proper burn test, because price has nothing to say about which wick is right.
3
3. You have your own tab supplyThe whole case against in-house rests on the kit’s 100-tab ceiling. With tabs of your own at your own price, the wick material is ₹1.39 at a 12 cm cut and the roll’s remaining 49 metres become usable. Cost your tabs explicitly and rerun the table above; that figure is not on this store and is not assumed here.
4
4. Whatever you choose, spread the tooling honestlyA Wick Centering Device at ₹118.00 for five and a Wick Setting Tool at ₹399.00 together come to ₹517.00. Over a hundred candles that is ₹5.17 each; over a thousand it is ₹0.52. Tools amortise; wicks do not. Put them in separate rows so a one-off purchase never distorts a per-wick comparison.

One route worth knowing about for contrast, because it is the only wick named here whose per-piece rate falls with pack size: Performance Wooden Wicks are ₹59.00 a wick in the pack of ten and ₹41.30 in the pack of a hundred, ₹17.70 less a wick. That is a published per-pack rate on the variant itself, not a general quantity ladder across the store — on the cotton wicks, C1 is ₹5.90 and C2 is ₹9.44 at every pack size, and Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made is ₹12.00 from the pack of ten right up to the pack of a thousand. Buying more cotton wick does not lower the rate; it only lowers the number of parcels.

That last point is where a real saving hides. The Braided Wick Roll with 100 wick tabs stores 0.2 kg packed and a sheet of Candle Wick Stickers stores 0.1 kg, so ordering both together is a 0.3 kg parcel, which sits in the store’s lowest published Standard band at ₹80.00 as at September 2026. Ordering them a fortnight apart bills that band twice. Since a wick decision is worth a rupee or two a candle, the parcel you avoid is frequently worth more than the wick you optimised.

What this page will not put a number on

The blanks are the honest half of a make-or-buy sheet.

Labour is the obvious one and it is absolute: no hourly rate, no minutes-per-wick figure and no “typical” wage appears anywhere on this page, because CSI does not sell labour and publishes no figure for it. The same applies to wick tabs bought elsewhere, to scissors and rulers you already own, and to the electricity and bench space an assembly session uses. Add them as named rows with your own numbers and total the sheet as materials from CSI plus your own costs.

Priced above: only the first row, from live CSI stock in September 2026, taxes included. Every other row is deliberately blank. CSI does not sell labour, wick tabs on their own, scissors or bench time, publishes no figure for any of them, and this page will not invent one. Note the direction they push: every blank sits on the in-house side of the comparison, so filling them in can only make assembling look worse, never better. The ₹4.93 budget against a ₹12.00 wick is therefore a ceiling, not an estimate of the real saving.

A final word on what none of this decides. Price does not choose a wick. Wick size answers to the melt pool diameter, the wax and the fragrance load, and it is settled with a test burn — the wick guide by diameter and how to choose the right wick are the right starting points. A wick chosen because it costs ₹4.93 less and then tunnels has cost you the whole candle, which on the 200 g example here is ₹161.29 of scented wax before any vessel. Get the size right first, then argue about the rupee.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA sells both the finished wicks and the roll-and-tabs kit on this page, and the page still says that assembling your own is ₹1.17 a wick dearer than buying an Eco C1 wick, that the kit’s 100 tabs strand 49 of its 61 metres at a 12 cm cut, and that CSI does not sell wick tabs separately to use them up. The honest case for the roll is a length or a test rig, not a saving, and its own page makes that case rather than a price one. Nothing here recommends a wick size: price has no bearing on which wick suits a candle, and no CSI page publishes a wick-size table by diameter.

Every CSI price here is live stock in September 2026, taxes included, and the linked product pages are authoritative if anything changes. Assembly speeds in wicks an hour are the reader’s own units, shown across a range rather than recommended; the reader’s hourly cost, wick tabs bought elsewhere, tools they already own, bench space and electricity are not CSI products, carry no figure anywhere on this page, and are left as blank rows. The finished-wick pages describe the wick and do not state whether a tab is attached, so this page states that rather than inferring it, and points to WhatsApp to confirm. Where a 200 g candle is costed for context, fragrance load is a percentage of wax weight as CSI product pages state it: 200 g of wax at 8% carries 16 g of oil. The Orchard Pear Fragrance Oil page publishes no candle usage range, so the wax grade’s stated maximum is the only published limit that applies — Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states up to 10% of total wax weight, which is the wax manufacturer’s stated formulation maximum, not a limit of any other kind. Shipping figures are the store’s published Standard weight bands as at September 2026, read against the stored packed weight of each variant; rates are merchant-set and can change, and there is no free-shipping threshold on the store.

Frequently asked questions

Is it cheaper to make my own wicks than to buy them?
Against an Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) at ₹5.90, no — the Braided Wick Roll with 100 wick tabs at ₹706.82 carries 100 tabs and therefore makes 100 wicks at ₹7.07, which is ₹1.17 dearer per wick. Against Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made at ₹12.00, yes — it saves ₹4.93 a wick, which is your labour budget. Settle the material half before you think about time.
How do I turn the material saving into an hourly figure?
Multiply the saving per wick by the wicks you finish in an hour. At ₹4.93 a wick that is ₹147.95 an hour at 30 wicks an hour, ₹295.91 at 60 and ₹591.82 at 120. Then compare it with what an hour of yours is worth — a figure this page deliberately leaves blank, because labour is not something CSI sells or publishes.
Why divide the roll by the tabs instead of the metres?
Because a length of cotton with no tab is not a usable container wick. The kit contains 61 metres and 100 tabs, and at any realistic cut length the tabs run out first: at 12 cm, 100 wicks use 12 metres and 49 metres are left with no hardware. CSI does not sell tabs separately, so dividing by metres gives a figure that is true about cotton and false about wicks.
Do wick stickers change the comparison?
No, and that is exactly why they are shown on every row. Candle Wick Stickers are ₹100.00 for 40, ₹2.50 each, and both routes need something to hold the wick to the base, so the cost lands on both sides and cancels. Large Candle Wick Stickers are ₹249.00 for 40 (₹6.23 each) if you need the larger diameter.
Does buying wicks in bigger packs lower the rate?
On the cotton wicks, no. Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) is ₹5.90 a wick and Thick (C2) is ₹9.44 at every pack size, and Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made is ₹12.00 from the pack of ten to the pack of a thousand. The clearest exception among the wicks named here is Performance Wooden Wicks, which is ₹59.00 a wick at ten and ₹41.30 at a hundred. Buying more cotton wick saves parcels, not rupees per wick.
How much of my candle cost is the wick anyway?
On 200 g of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at 8% with Orchard Pear Fragrance Oil, the scented wax is ₹161.29 and a ₹5.90 wick is 3.53% of the two together. Winning this argument moves a candle by a rupee or two. Worth doing at volume, not worth an afternoon at ten candles a week, and never worth choosing the wrong wick size for.

About this guide: Written by the CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA team. The method — settle the material half of a make-or-buy question first, divide a kit by its binding component rather than its most plentiful one, and express the result as a labour budget per hour rather than as a verdict — works with any supplier, any component and any currency.

Figures verified September 2026 (CSI live pricing). The reader’s figures: assembly speed in wicks an hour, shown across 30 to 120 as their own units, and their own hourly cost, which is left blank throughout because labour is not a CSI cost. Live CSI prices, September 2026, taxes included. Finished wicks: Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) ₹5.90 a wick at every C1 pack — 20 for ₹118.00, 50 for ₹295.00, 500 for ₹2,950.00, 1000 for ₹5,900.00 — and Thick (C2) ₹9.44; the page describes cotton and paper fibres for natural waxes and does not state whether a tab is attached. Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made ₹12.00 a wick at every pack from 10 (₹120.00) to 1000; the page states a height of 10.16 cm and suitability for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm. Performance Wooden Wicks ₹59.00 a wick at 10 and ₹41.30 at 100. Assembly route: Braided Wick Roll with 100 wick tabs (61 metres) ₹706.82, which is ₹11.59 a metre or ₹7.07 a wick when divided by the 100 tabs supplied; the page states that the 100 metal tabs attach to one end of the wick and give it a stable base. CSI does not list wick tabs as a separate product. Adhesive and tooling: Candle Wick Stickers ₹100.00 for 40 (₹2.50 each, page states 10 mm round and heat resistant), Large Candle Wick Stickers ₹249.00 for 40 (₹6.23 each), Wick Centering Device ₹118.00 for a pack of five, Wick Setting Tool ₹399.00, Steel Wick Holder ₹1,250.00 for 25 (₹50.00 each). Candle context: 200 g of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at ₹507.40 a kilogram in the 5 kg pack (₹2,537.00) with 16 g of Orchard Pear Fragrance Oil at ₹3.74 a gram in the 1000 gm pack (₹3,738.00), giving ₹161.29 of scented wax; fragrance load is a percentage of wax weight, so 8% of 200 g is 16 g. The Orchard Pear page publishes no candle usage range, so the wax grade’s stated maximum of 10% is the only published limit that applies. Orchard Pear pack ladder: 50 gm ₹240.00 (₹4.80/g), 100 gm ₹380.00 (₹3.80/g), 500 gm ₹1,870.00 (₹3.74/g), 1000 gm ₹3,738.00 (₹3.74/g). Shipping: the roll stores 0.2 kg packed and a sticker sheet 0.1 kg, so the two together are 0.3 kg, which falls in the store’s lowest published Standard band at ₹80.00 as at September 2026; rates are merchant-set flat rates and can change, and no transit time for any city is stated. Illustrative and assumed: the cut lengths from 8 cm to 20 cm, the assembly speeds from 30 to 120 wicks an hour, and the 100-wick and 1,000-candle runs used to spread tooling. Not priced anywhere on this page: labour, wick tabs bought elsewhere, scissors, rulers, bench space, electricity, labels, cartons, courier to your own customer and gateway fees.
