Quick answers — read this first
Can a heat gun fix a rough candle top? Yes, cosmetically. It remelts a shallow skin of wax — call it two to three millimetres — and surface tension pulls that liquid flat as it re-sets. The top looks smooth within a minute.

Does it fix the cause? No. Frosting runs through the whole wax column, a wet spot sits against the glass, a void sits deep in the body. A heat gun reaches none of them. It also does not stop the top going rough again — the roughness returns if you cool it fast, which is what caused it in the first place.

What is the one step everybody skips? Cooling slowly afterwards. Sweeping the gun across takes forty seconds; letting the jar sit undisturbed and unfanned while it re-sets is what decides whether it stays smooth. Full method below.

The short answer
Yes for the surface: a hot air gun at ₹531 melts the top skin and lets it re-level. Held moving, at distance, on the low setting, it takes about 30–45 seconds a jar and it genuinely works.
No for the cause: it cannot touch frosting, it cannot fill a sinkhole or hidden void, and it cannot re-bond wax to glass. It also will not stop the top from going rough again overnight if the jar cools fast.
The step that decides the result: cool it slowly. Fast cooling is what roughened the top the first time, and blasting it hot then standing it in front of a fan reproduces the fault exactly.

Both panels use the same depth scale: an 80 mm deep container candle, measured down from the surface. The solid black band is everything a heat gun remelts — the top two to three millimetres. The rough crystal structure that produced the uneven top runs roughly twice that deep, so even the fault you are treating is only half addressed; the gun flattens its visible surface and leaves the rest. Below that, nothing the gun does reaches at all: a void sitting between 15 and 55 mm gets sealed over rather than filled, and frosting is distributed through the entire 80 mm column. Straight answer
Can I fix a rough candle top with a heat gun?
Yes for the surface, no for the cause. Warm air remelts a shallow skin of wax — realistically two to three millimetres — and while that skin is liquid, surface tension pulls it flat. Let it re-set and the top is smooth. That part is real, it takes under a minute a jar, and a hot air gun at ₹531 does it well. What it does not do is address why the top was rough. A rough soy top is a crystallisation event: the wax set too fast, or too unevenly, and grew coarse crystals instead of fine ones. Those crystals continue below the depth you melted. Frosting runs through the whole column, a wet spot sits against the glass, and a void sits deep in the body where hot air will never reach — a sinkhole needs a top-up pour, not a gun. Worse, the repair is reversible: remelted wax has to crystallise again, and if it cools as fast as it did the first time, you will find the same rough top waiting for you in the morning. Treat the gun as a finishing tool for a handful of jars, and fix the pour itself for the rest.
One line: a heat gun re-levels the top 2–3 mm of wax and nothing deeper — it is a finishing tool for a few jars, not a repair for a batch, and cooling slowly afterwards matters more than the heating.

How deep a heat gun actually reaches

Hot air is a surface tool. It heats what it touches, and wax is one of the worst conductors on your bench.

The reason a heat gun is a two-millimetre tool rather than a twenty-millimetre one is not the gun. It is the wax. Solid wax conducts heat very poorly — that is precisely why a candle works at all, why the melt pool stays shallow, and why you can hold a burning jar by its base. Blow hot air across the top and the surface layer softens almost immediately, but the heat travels downwards slowly, and while it is travelling the surface is getting hotter. You reach the point where the top is running liquid and starting to scorch long before the heat has moved a centimetre down. In practice that ceiling sits at two to three millimetres of properly remelted wax, with a softened but not liquid zone perhaps a millimetre or two beyond it.

Now compare that with the depths the defects live at. A rough soy top is the visible face of a coarse crystal structure that typically runs five to eight millimetres deep — you can prove it yourself by scraping a rough top back with a spoon and finding that the wax two or three millimetres down is grainy too. Frosting is not a layer at all: it is the whole wax column, and the reason you only notice it on the top and against the glass is that those are the two faces you can see. A void from a slow-forming shrinkage cavity may have its ceiling fifteen millimetres below the surface and its floor at fifty. A wet spot is against the glass wall, on the other side of a wax column the gun cannot heat through.

The practical consequence: the gun changes the top face, not the top layer. Melt three millimetres of a five-to-eight-millimetre coarse zone and you have made the surface glossy and flat while leaving most of the coarse structure sitting under it. That is fine if the reader is a customer who will look at the jar once. It is not fine if you are treating the smooth result as evidence that you have fixed something — you have not, and the next batch will do exactly the same thing. It also means that where the roughness is genuinely deep — a badly pitted top after a very fast cool, or a top that has cracked — the gun makes a shiny lid over a mess and the first burn reveals it.
One test that tells you whether the gun is the right tool
Take a spoon or a butter knife and scrape a small area of the rough top back by two millimetres on a jar you are not going to sell. If the wax underneath is smooth and even, the fault is genuinely a surface skin and the heat gun is a legitimate fix. If it is grainy, pitted or shot through with tiny bubbles all the way down, the fault is in the crystallisation of the whole pour and hot air will only hide it. Two minutes of destruction on one jar saves an hour of gunning fifty.

There is one useful exception. The very common overnight roughening — smooth on Tuesday evening, matte and lumpy on Wednesday morning — really is shallow. That effect comes from the surface continuing to crystallise after you stopped watching, and it is often a genuine top-skin phenomenon. Those jars respond beautifully to a heat gun and, provided you cool them slowly the second time, frequently stay smooth. The technique, step by step

Everyone gets the first six steps roughly right. Almost nobody does the seventh, and the seventh is the one that decides whether the top is still smooth tomorrow.

Work on a cool, fully set candle — at least a few hours old, ideally overnight. Never on a candle that has been lit. Set up before you switch anything on: the jar on a heatproof surface, the gun where you can put it down safely, and a clear space where the jars can stand undisturbed afterwards for an hour.

Use the low setting.If your gun has two heat settings, use the lower one, and if it has an airflow control, use the lower one there too. You are melting a wax skin, not stripping paint. High heat gets you to a liquid surface faster and gives you a much smaller window between "level" and "scorched, discoloured and running down to the wick tab". Slower is more controllable, and the difference in total time across a jar is a few seconds.

Hold it at a distance and keep it moving.Start around 15–20 cm above the wax and come closer only if nothing is happening after fifteen seconds. Never let the nozzle hover over one spot. A static gun makes a crater — the wax directly under it goes liquid and mobile while the wax at the rim of the jar is still solid, so you get a dished centre that sets into a worse shape than the one you started with.

Sweep across, do not dwell.Move in slow passes from one side of the jar to the other, then turn the jar a quarter-turn and sweep again. Think of it as painting the surface with air rather than pointing at a target. Angle the nozzle slightly so the air moves across the wax rather than straight down into it; a perpendicular jet at close range physically pushes liquid wax to the edges and up the glass.

Watch the sheen, not the clock.The wax tells you where it is. Matte and opaque means still solid. A darkening, wet-looking gloss spreading out from where you are working means the skin has gone liquid. That gloss front is your guide: work it outwards until it reaches the glass all the way round. On a typical 200 g jar this is 30 to 45 seconds of gun time. If you are past 90 seconds and the surface has not glossed over, the gun is too far away, not too weak.

Melt the skin, not the candle.The moment the whole surface is glossy, you have your two to three millimetres. Going further buys you nothing — the extra depth does not improve the finish, it only increases the chance of reaching the wick tab, softening the glue dot, and letting the wick lean. If you can see the wax around the wick base moving as a small whirlpool, you are already deeper than you need to be. Stop.

Stop the moment it levels.Liquid wax finds its own level in a second or two; there is no benefit in holding it liquid to "let it settle". Cut the heat, put the gun down on its heel or hang it, and leave the jar alone. Do not tap the jar to help it flatten and do not tilt it to chase a low corner — a jar tilted while the skin is liquid sets with a slope you cannot undo without doing the whole thing again.

Cool it slowly — this is the step that matters.You have just melted wax and it now has to crystallise again. Fast, uneven cooling grows coarse crystals; that is what made the top rough in the first place. So do not put a freshly gunned jar in front of a fan, on a cold stone floor, next to an air conditioner or out on a balcony. Leave it standing on a wooden board or a folded cloth, in still air, away from draughts, for at least an hour. Loosely covering the batch with an inverted carton is the single cheapest way to slow it down. Do this and the top stays smooth; skip it and you have spent forty seconds a jar to produce the same fault by morning.

Judge the result at 24 hours, not at ten minutes.Soy keeps crystallising for days. A jar that looks perfect ten minutes after gunning may be matte again the next morning, and a jar that looks slightly cloudy at ten minutes often clears. Photograph one jar, leave the batch overnight, and look again before you decide whether the technique worked. If you are running this as an experiment, change one thing at a time and write down the ambient temperature — the same method gives different results in a Chennai afternoon and a Delhi January.
If you have never done it before
Practise on a jar you have already written off. The failure modes are all recoverable on a candle nobody is paying for, and the cost of the lesson is a few rupees of wax — Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 is ₹260 per 500 g, so a 200 g jar of wax is about a hundred rupees of material. Five things that go wrong

None of these is exotic. All five are ordinary outcomes of pointing a few hundred degrees of moving air at a jar of wax, and all five are avoidable by keeping the gun moving, keeping it far away, and stopping early.

1. Thermal shock in the glass. Glass fails when one part of it expands and the part next to it does not. A stationary nozzle 5 cm from the rim heats a band of glass fast while the wax-filled body below stays cool, and the stress goes into the wall. The candles most at risk are the ones just brought in from a cold store, jars with condensation on the outside, thick-walled or heavily moulded glass, and anything with an existing chip. Cracks do not always appear at the time — some show up as a ring failure on the customer's first burn, which is far worse than losing the jar at your bench.

Fix: keep the gun moving and above the wax, not aimed at the rim or the wall; work at room temperature, never straight out of cold storage; wipe the outside of the jar dry first; and do not do this on a jar you already know is chipped.
2. Melting down to the wick tab. The wick is held by a metal tab and usually a glue dot. Melt deep enough and the wax around the tab liquefies, the glue softens, and the tab can shift, tilt or float off the base. You may not see it happen — the surface looks perfect — and the fault only shows on the burn, as a wick sitting off-centre that burns into one wall and tunnels down the other side. On a shallow votive or tin, where there is less wax between the surface and the tab, the margin is much smaller.

Fix: stop at gloss. If you have gone deep enough to see the wax circulating around the wick, hold the wick upright with a bamboo wick holder at ₹118 for a set of five while it re-sets, and check the wick is central and vertical before you box the candle.
3. Discolouring a dyed candle. Dye that has been sitting happily in wax at pouring temperature can shift when you heat a thin surface layer much hotter than that. Pale shades go yellow or muddy, some reds shift towards brown, and because you are only heating the top, the change is a two-tone candle: a re-levelled top skin that no longer matches the body under it. In a clear jar that boundary is visible from the side and it looks like a manufacturing fault, because it is one.

Fix: test on one jar of that colour before you do a batch, use the lowest setting, and accept that some shades in the candle dyes range will not survive the treatment. If they do not, put those candles in an opaque jar or fix the pour instead.
4. Driving off surface fragrance. The fragrance that gives you cold throw is the fragrance sitting in the top few millimetres — the part nearest the customer's nose when they open the lid in a shop. Remelt that skin and you flash off the lightest and most volatile molecules first, which are also the top notes that sell the candle. The candle still smells the same when burning, because the melt pool reaches wax you never heated, but the cold throw on that jar can be noticeably weaker. Citrus, mint and green notes lose most; heavy woods, ouds and vanillas lose least.

Fix: if cold throw is the selling point, do not gun the candle at all — or gun it and then let it cure with the lid off for a few days before you seal it. Buying oil to compensate is the wrong answer; the 92 oils in the fragrance collection all have a stated ceiling per wax and you should stay under it. Those ceilings are wax-manufacturer formulation limits, not regulatory ones: up to 13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and up to 10% for Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464.
5. A glossy top that does not match your other units. This is the one that catches production runs. A heat-gunned soy top sets glassier and more reflective than a naturally cooled one. Do it to the twelve bad jars out of fifty and you now have two visibly different products in the same box — and a customer who buys two candles from the same batch will see it immediately. It reads as inconsistency, which is exactly the impression a small brand cannot afford.

Fix: gun the whole batch or none of it. If twelve out of fifty are bad, that is a pour problem, and the honest answer is to treat all fifty the same way — either all gunned, or all re-poured, or all sold as they are with a care sticker at ₹413 per 500 (₹0.83 each) explaining that a natural soy top is not a machine-made one.
Does it change how the candle burns?
No — if you only touch the top skin. The fuel is the same wax, the wick is the same wick, and the first burn melts a pool deeper than the two or three millimetres you re-levelled, so within an hour of lighting there is no trace of what you did. It changes the burn in exactly three situations, all of them from going too deep or too hot: you shift the wick tab and the wick sits off-centre, so the candle burns into one wall and tunnels; you soften the wax around the wick enough for it to lean, which does the same thing more slowly; or you seal a smooth lid over a void, so the first burn drops through into a cavity and the flame flares as the pool suddenly deepens. Stop at gloss and none of the three happens.
The CSI principle
A heat gun is a finishing tool. It belongs at the end of a good process, not in the middle of a broken one.
If you reach for it once a month to rescue three jars, it is doing exactly the job it should. If you reach for it after every pour, it has stopped being a tool and become a symptom — and the thing to change is the pour temperature and the cooling, not the technique with the gun.

Safety with hot air and hot glass

A heat gun is not a hairdryer. It is the one tool on a candle bench that will burn you without touching you.

Most candle-making equipment is forgiving. This is not. The air leaving the nozzle is far hotter than anything else in the room, the nozzle itself stays dangerous for minutes after you switch off, and the jar you are working on becomes hot to hold. None of the rules below are complicated; they are the ones people skip because the job takes forty seconds and feels trivial.

Ventilate — an open window or a door, not a fan pointed at the bench You are volatilising fragrance oil off the surface, and the smell in a closed room gets unpleasant quickly. A fan solves the air and ruins the cooling; open a window instead.
Keep the jars you have finished away from the ones you have not Freshly gunned jars need still air for an hour. Stacking them next to a working bench means somebody moves them, and a jar tilted while the skin is liquid sets crooked.

One more, which is about the business rather than your hands: do not do this the morning a courier is collecting. A gunned candle needs an hour of still air and a day before you can be confident of the finish. Boxing a jar with a still-soft top produces a smeared surface against the packaging, and a candle that was rough but honest becomes a candle that looks damaged. The batch question — what 50 jars actually costs you

Forty seconds a jar sounds like nothing. Do the multiplication before you commit a production run to it.

The gun time is the small part. The real figure is end-to-end handling: pick the jar up, set it on the board, sweep it, inspect it, decide whether it needs a second pass, move it to the cooling area, pick up the next one. Ninety seconds a jar is a realistic average once you include the jars that need doing twice and the ones you decide to leave. Here is what that turns into.

Read the last row. A studio pouring 200 candles a month and gunning all of them is spending five hours a month, sixty hours a year, on a cosmetic step — and the cooling space is a real constraint too, because fifty jars that all need an hour of undisturbed still air is a table you cannot use for anything else. Now price the alternative. A pen thermometer is ₹354, once. Getting the pour temperature consistent and the cooling slow costs you no minutes per batch at all — it is a change in how you do the same work, not extra work.

The break-even, in one line
₹354 divided by 5 hours a month is ₹71 an hour. Put your own value on an hour of your time. If an hour of it is worth more than ₹71 to you, the thermometer has paid for itself inside the first month and the heat gun has not — and that is before you count the jars you crack, the wicks you shift and the cold throw you lose. This is the arithmetic we would rather you did, even though we sell both tools.

There is a volume above which the gun stops being an option at all. Somewhere around a hundred jars a run, heat-gunning becomes a second production shift, and no amount of technique makes it faster — the ninety seconds is mostly handling, not heating. If you are at that volume and your tops are rough, the problem is not that you lack a finishing step. What to do instead — and when the gun is genuinely right

There are three other answers to a rough top, and two of them are better than hot air.

The second pour, for a dip you can measure. If the fault is a defined depression — a dished centre, a shallow well around the wick, a sinkhole that opened as the wax shrank — the correct repair is not to remelt the surface but to add wax to it. Hold back roughly 5% of the batch wax, remelt it, and pour a thin top-up layer once the first pour has set firm but is still slightly warm to the back of the hand. Pour it thin: a top-up more than a few millimetres deep shrinks in its turn and gives you a second dip. Pour it at a lower temperature than the main pour, so it does not remelt a channel down the middle of what has already set. And know the limitation — a top-up pour on a merely rough top leaves a visible tide line where the new wax meets the old, which is worse than the roughness you were fixing. Fixing the pour, so you never need either. This is the real answer and it is not a product. A smooth soy top comes from a controlled pour temperature, a warmed jar, and slow, even, undisturbed cooling in still air at a stable room temperature — the same three variables that decide whether the wax stays in contact with the glass. Change one variable at a time, pour at least three jars per variation, and write down the wax, the pour temperature, the ambient temperature and how the tops looked at 24 hours and at 7 days. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at ₹260 per 500 g and ₹5,074 per 10 kg is the single-pour container wax in the range; Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹299 per 500 g and ₹5,999 per 10 kg take a higher fragrance load, up to 13%; Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 at ₹325 per 500 g is the softer premium tier; and Eco Soy CSI 400 at ₹399 per kg is the simplest one-pour option. So when is the gun genuinely right? Small numbers, high value, shallow fault. Three jars out of a run of thirty that went wrong for an identifiable reason. A photography sample. A wedding order where the tops must match and you have the evening to do it properly. An overnight roughening on an otherwise good batch, which is the one case where the fault really is only skin-deep. In all of those the gun earns its ₹531. Frequently asked questions

Can I use a hair dryer instead of a heat gun?
Usually not effectively. A hair dryer moves a lot of air at a temperature designed to be safe against skin, so on most soy candles it will warm the surface without ever melting it — you end up holding it there for minutes, warming the whole jar and the wick with it, which is the opposite of what you want. If it does eventually gloss the surface, the result is fine. But the tool that does this in forty seconds is a hot air gun at ₹531, and the tool that means you do not need either is a pen thermometer at ₹354.
Will the rough top come back after I heat-gun it?
It can, and the deciding factor is how you cool it. You have just melted wax; it now has to crystallise again, and fast or uneven cooling grows the same coarse crystals that made the top rough the first time. A jar gunned and then left in front of a fan or on a cold floor is very likely to be matte again by morning. A jar gunned and then left in still air, on a wooden board, loosely covered, for an hour usually stays smooth. Does a heat gun fix frosting?
No. Frosting is not a surface film — it is fine white crystal growth distributed through the whole wax column, and you can only see the part of it that meets a face you can look at. Remelting two or three millimetres removes the frosting in those two or three millimetres and leaves the other seventy-odd. Worse, the remelted skin re-crystallises as it cools and frequently frosts again within days, sometimes more visibly than before because the surface is now glassier. Can I heat-gun a candle to fix a sinkhole?
Only in the narrow case where the cavity is open to the surface and shallow enough that the melted skin can flow into it — and even then you are moving wax from the top into the hole, which lowers the overall level. A closed void deeper in the candle cannot be filled by hot air at all; melting the surface over it produces a smooth top with the cavity intact underneath, which is a worse candle than the one you started with, because the first burn drops into it. Will heat-gunning weaken the fragrance?
It can weaken the cold throw — the scent someone gets from an unlit candle — because the fragrance nearest the surface is the fragrance they smell, and remelting that skin drives off the lightest molecules first. Citrus, mint and green top notes lose the most; heavy woods, ouds and vanillas lose least. The hot throw is essentially unaffected, because the melt pool reaches wax you never heated. If cold throw is what sells the candle, do not gun it, or let it stand uncovered for a few days afterwards before you seal it. Do not compensate by raising the load: the ceilings are wax-manufacturer formulation limits — up to 13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, up to 10% for Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464.
Is there any risk of cracking the glass?
Yes, and it is the one failure that can reach the customer rather than staying at your bench. Glass breaks when one part expands faster than the part beside it, so a stationary nozzle near the rim, a jar straight out of cold storage, condensation on the outside, or an existing chip are all ways to create a crack — sometimes one that only fails later, during a burn. Keep the gun moving, keep it above the wax rather than aimed at the wall, work at room temperature, wipe the glass dry, and never treat a jar you know is chipped. Losing a ₹70.80 matte jar at the bench is cheap; a failure in a customer's home is not.
