Quick answers — read this first
Can two similar fragrance oils age differently? Yes. Fragrance oils are blends, and two oils with a similar character can be built from different materials, so their top, heart and base can shift at different rates in storage.

Why would lemon oils differ in stability? As general practice, fresh citrus top notes tend to be volatile, while musks and woods last longer. A lemon with a different heart and base can hold its balance differently over time.

Does CSI publish stability data for its oils? No. CSI pages publish no shelf life or ageing data. The note pyramids on the pages show how blends differ; your own storage test shows what that means.

How do I choose between two similar oils? Make candles from both in the same wax, jar and load, store them together, and compare blind against fresh candles at dated points. Choose on the aged result.
The short answer
Short answer: Yes; similar scent profiles can sit on different ingredient structures, so storage behaviour can differ between them.
Evidence: Page note pyramids show the blends differ; only a side-by-side real-time test shows how much it matters.
Decision: Buy in bulk only the oil whose aged candles still match its fresh reference for your planned hold.

Suggested starting points: assess both oils at each point against fresh candles made the same week.
Straight answer
Can Two Fragrance Oils With Similar Scent Profiles Have Very Different Storage Stability Because Their Ingredient Compositions Differ?
Yes. A fragrance oil is a blend, and two oils that both read as “lemon” or “vanilla” on a strip can be built from quite different materials. As general practice, lighter, more volatile materials such as many citrus and fresh top notes can fade or change faster than heavier woody, musky and vanillic ones, so the proportion and choice of materials underneath shapes how a candle's balance shifts over months. CSI publishes no stability data, but the note pyramids on its pages show how blends differ — compare Citrus Lemon's grapefruit, orange and mandarin with Zesty Lemon's floral heart and clean musk base. Test both side by side in storage before you choose which to buy in quantity.
One line: similar on the strip does not mean similar on the shelf — let a paired storage test decide.
Zesty Lemon pairs with Citrus Lemon in this page's test: a lemon top with a soft floral citrus heart and a subtle clean musk base, against an all-citrus pyramid.

Why two similar oils can behave differently

The name on the bottle describes the first impression; the blend decides the sixth month.

When you smell two lemon oils on strips, you mostly meet their top notes, because those are the materials that leave the strip first. If both open with bright lemon, they seem close. But a fragrance oil is a mixture, and what sits underneath that opening can be very different from one oil to another: more or fewer fresh materials, different heart notes, a heavier or lighter base.

In general fragrance practice, lighter, more volatile materials — many citrus and fresh top notes among them — evaporate and can oxidise more readily than heavier woody, resinous, musky and vanillic materials. So over weeks and months in a candle or a bottle, the opening can recede and the base can seem more dominant. How far that shifts the overall character depends on what the base is, and how much of the fragrance relied on the top in the first place.

That is why two oils with similar scent profiles can have very different storage behaviour. Not because one is necessarily better made, but because they are built differently.

What the product pages already tell you

CSI publishes no shelf life or ageing data for any oil, and nothing on this page should be read as a stability rating. But the note structures on the product pages are a fair starting point for a hypothesis you can then test.

Reading the blends
Two pairs of similar CSI oils, compared on what their pages state
Pair Oil Stated notes and page statements What to watch in storage
Lemon Citrus Lemon Top lemon and lime, middle grapefruit and orange, base mandarin; page warns citrus top notes are volatile and fade faster than warmer families Whether the whole profile softens, since even the base is citrus
Lemon Zesty Lemon Lemon top, soft floral citrus heart, subtle clean musk base; 0% vanillin Whether lemon recedes while musk and floral heart carry on
Vanilla Dark Vanilla Top rich vanilla and spice, middle caramel and cream, base dark amber and musk; vanillin present, page says it will yellow light wax Balance between spice, cream and amber; wax colour
Vanilla Vanilla Bean Vanillin 2.5%; page notes potential discolouration and recommends testing with lighter waxes Creaminess and wax colour over time

Notice how much the lemon pair differs once you look past the name. Citrus Lemon is citrus from top to base; Zesty Lemon puts a lemon opening over a floral and musk structure. A reasonable hypothesis is that they will age differently in a candle. Whether that difference matters to you — and which way — is exactly what you cannot know without testing.

A paired storage test, priced

Buy 100 g of each lemon oil. Citrus Lemon's 100 g pack is ₹300.00 and Zesty Lemon's is ₹360.00, so the samples cost ₹300.00 + ₹360.00 = ₹660.00. From each 100 g, make five 200 g test candles at 8% load, which uses 5 × 16 g = 80 g and leaves 20 g to seal away as a retained oil reference — enough for one fresh candle at the end plus a few smelling strips along the way.

1
Fix every other variable.Same wax from one bag, same jar, same wick, same 8% load, same pour temperature, same day. Each candle is 184 g wax and 16 g oil. Add oil below each page's published flashpoint and check temperatures with a thermometer.
2
Make the sets.Five candles from each oil, one to be opened at each test point. Seal the remaining 20 g of each sample in a small, full glass bottle, label it, and keep it in the coolest, darkest spot you have.
3
Store together.Lidded, on the same shelf, in your real storage conditions, with a min/max thermometer. Do not give one oil the cooler corner.
4
Assess on schedule. At each suggested point, open one candle of each, code them, and compare cold throw blind. At day 90 and day 180, also burn one of each side by side, never unattended.
5
Refresh the reference. At the intermediate points, dip a strip from each retained oil beside the aged candles. At day 180, make one fresh candle from each retained portion, cure it, and compare it blind with the last aged candle. Comparing against fresh material stops you judging against memory.
Unfair comparisons. Testing one oil at 8% and the other at 10%, or in different jars, tells you about the recipe, not the oil. Keep everything identical except the fragrance.

Recording the result

Paired ageing log
Score each oil against its own fresh reference: same, slightly different, clearly different
Test point Citrus Lemon cold throw Zesty Lemon cold throw Hot throw (burn points) Wax appearance Notes
Day 0 (after stated cure) Reference Reference Burn one each Record Room temp
Day 30 —
Day 60 —
Day 90 Burn one each Strip from retained oil
Day 180 Burn one each Fresh candle from retained oil

Use words, not invented scores. “Lemon opening noticeably quieter, musk now leads” is more useful than a number you made up on the spot. If you have a second person, ask them to assess independently before you compare notes.

Run the vanilla pair too
If vanilla is a bestseller, the same method works for Dark Vanilla and Vanilla Bean, both ₹790.00 for 100 g. Add a check on wax colour, since both pages mention discolouration; a candle that yellows may still smell right, and that is a separate decision.

What the paired test cannot tell you

A side-by-side test is powerful because it removes almost every variable except the oil. That same tidiness sets its limits, and it is worth being honest about them before you lean on the result.

It describes your conditions, not everyone's. Candles that sat in a steady storeroom may behave differently in a hot courier van or a shop window. If your stock will travel or sit somewhere warmer, add a set stored there, or run a supervised warm-cabinet comparison of the two oils alongside the real-time one. Use the warm set only to rank the pair; it does not convert into months.

It describes the lots you tested. A later lot of either oil is a new material until you have checked it against your retained reference.

It does not explain the chemistry. You will learn that one oil drifted and the other did not, not which materials were responsible. For commercial decisions, that is usually enough. If you need more, ask the supplier whether they can advise on the oil's stability in your intended use, and get the reply in writing.

Choosing — and how much to buy

If both oils still match their fresh references at the longest point you plan to hold stock, choose on preference, price and performance. Citrus Lemon's 1 kg pack is ₹2,832.00 and Zesty Lemon's is ₹3,400.00, a difference of ₹3,400.00 − ₹2,832.00 = ₹568.00 per kilogram, which matters at volume.

If one oil holds and the other drifts, the decision is made for you, even if the drifting oil smelled better on day 0 or costs less. A fragrance that is lovely for four weeks is the wrong choice for a product that sits for four months.

And if both drift, you have learned that your planned hold is too long for a fresh citrus in your conditions. The answer then is smaller, more frequent production and smaller oil orders — even if that means buying 1 kg packs rather than several kilograms at once — and a modest best-within period that you can stand behind. Never tell customers either oil will smell unchanged indefinitely.

Whatever you choose, keep the paired log. When a supplier changes a lot or you consider a third lemon, you already have the test design and a result to compare against.

Argue against interest
Choose the oil that ages well, not the one that sniffs best on day one.
Fresh samples flatter top notes. Pay for a paired storage test before you commit kilograms to an oil that may only shine for a month.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general fragrance-ageing practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly that CSI's oil pages publish no shelf life, storage temperature or ageing data, treats the 60-month shelf life on the CSI 464 and 468 pages as a wax statement only, and labels every test day, cabinet temperature, candle count, reject rate or lead time as a starting point or the reader's own figure.

Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. No fragrance-oil pack above 1 kg is listed, so larger quantities are shown as multiples of the 1 kg price; ask for a quote rather than assuming a discount.

Frequently asked questions

Why does one lemon fragrance oil last longer than another?
Fragrance oils are blends. One lemon may be mostly citrus materials, while another sits a lemon top on floral and musk notes. As general practice, citrus tops tend to fade faster than musks and woods, so the structure underneath affects how the candle holds.
Do fragrance oils with the same name have the same shelf life?
Not necessarily. Similar names or scent profiles can come from different ingredient structures. CSI publishes no shelf life for its oils, so ask for guidance in writing and compare the oils side by side in your own storage.
How do I compare two fragrance oils for storage stability?
Make candles from both in the same wax, jar, wick and load on the same day, store them together, and compare blind against fresh candles from retained oil at dated points such as day 30, 60, 90 and 180.
Which CSI lemon fragrance oil is better for long storage?
CSI publishes no stability data, so neither can be called better for storage on the page's evidence. Citrus Lemon is all-citrus; Zesty Lemon has a floral heart and musk base. A paired storage test in your conditions answers it.
Does a stronger fragrance oil last longer in candles?
Not necessarily. Strength ratings on product pages describe the oil's character, not how it ages. An oil can be strong when fresh and still shift during storage. Test aged candles against fresh references.
Is it worth testing similar fragrance oils before bulk buying?
Yes. A 100 g sample of each costs far less than kilograms of an oil that drifts during your hold. Test both for as long as you plan to store stock, then buy the one that still matches.
