Quick answers — read this first
Do wet spots affect the burn? No. A wet spot is air trapped between the wax and the jar wall, and burning is decided by the wick, the fuel and the melt pool. Burn time, pool width, throw and safety are unchanged.

Is there any case where it matters? One. A large detachment low on the jar can let molten wax escape sideways and pool against cold glass. That is a jar to pull; the test is below.

The short answer
No, in almost every case. A wet spot is an air gap between wax and glass. It does not change the wick, the fuel, the melt pool or the throw — so it does not change the burn. It is not moisture either.
The exception: a large detached area low on the jar. Molten wax can run down behind the wax column and pool against the glass. Pull those units.
What does change the burn: wick size, fragrance load, wax grade, jar diameter and cure. Check those five, in that order, before you blame a patch on the glass.

Straight answer
Do wet spots affect how a candle burns?
No — in almost every case they change nothing you can measure. A wet spot is a small pocket of air where the wax has contracted away from the glass on cooling; there is no water in it, and the causes are thermal, not a fault in your process. Burning is decided by four things: the wick, the fuel it draws, the melt pool the flame maintains, and the vessel that holds the heat. An air gap on the wall is none of them. It sits below the pool, sealed behind a solid wall of wax, and the wax it would have touched is still there — the same mass, the same fragrance load, the same wick. Burn time, pool width, time to a full pool, scent throw and safety all come out identical. The exception is narrow and worth knowing: a large detached area low on the jar, where molten wax can escape sideways and run down against cold glass. That is a jar to pull. Everything else is cosmetic contraction, and the fix is a care card, not a remake.
One line: a wet spot is air in a place that does no work — the burn is unchanged unless the detachment is large and low, in which case pull the jar.

Why makers assume it must matter

The intuition is not stupid: it is the most visible flaw on a clear jar, it appears where the flame is working, and it looks exactly like something coming apart.

First, it looks like damage. Every other mark that resembles a wet spot genuinely is a problem — a crack in the glass, a delaminated label, a bubble under a coating. The visual grammar of "patch on a surface" reads as failure. A wet spot borrows that grammar while being nothing like it: the wax has not cracked, the glass has not failed, the candle has lost no mass. A piece of wax has simply stopped touching the glass, which it never needed to do in order to burn.

Second, the timing implicates the flame. Wet spots are most often noticed after the first burn, because heating and re-cooling expands and contracts the wax again and pulls fresh patches loose. A maker who sees nothing at pour, burns the jar for two hours and then finds three patches has watched the flame apparently create the defect. It only changed the temperature of a jar that was always going to contract that way — the causes guide sets the mechanism out in full. Burning reveals the gap; the gap does not affect burning.

Third, it appears near the burn line. The top of the jar is warmest and cools most unevenly, so patches cluster in the upper third — the same band the customer stares at while the candle is lit. Proximity is not participation. The melt pool is a shallow disc of liquid sitting on a solid column; on a 70 mm jar it is roughly 38.5 cm² of surface in the top 8–12 mm. A patch 30 mm below that line is behind a solid barrier the flame never reaches.

Do the proportion on paper. A nominal 70 mm jar with a 90 mm wax column has about 220 mm of circumference by 90 mm of height — roughly 19,800 mm² of wall contact. A patch 15 mm by 20 mm is 300 mm², about 1.5% of the wall. Five of them still leave 92.5% intact, and none of that contact was carrying heat into the burn anyway. Measure your own jar; the arithmetic is the point, not the 70 mm.

A fourth reason is commercial rather than physical: the maker sees forty jars at once, the customer sees one. Lined up on a table the patches read as a pattern, and a pattern reads as systematic failure. That difference in viewing conditions explains most of the panic in maker groups and none of the physics.

What the gap actually touches — and what decides the burn

A container candle burns through a very short chain. Wax at the top melts into a shallow pool; the wick draws it up by capillary action; the flame vaporises it and burns the vapour; the vessel holds enough heat at the wall to keep the pool open to its full width. That is the whole system. Change a link and the burn changes. Change something outside the chain and it does not.

The last row is where the argument sits. Adhesion is real and worth having — clean wall contact photographs better and sells better, which is why the adhesion guide and the prevention guide exist. But it is a finish property, exactly as a smooth top or an even colour is: it changes what the candle looks like on a shelf, not what happens after someone strikes a match.

Test it yourself in one evening, for the cost of nothing
Take two jars from the same pour — one patched, one clean. Weigh both. Burn them side by side in the same closed room, lit at the same minute, and record time to a full melt pool, pool depth at three hours and total burn time. You will not find a difference outside your own measurement error. It costs two candles you were going to burn anyway.

Two objections deserve direct answers. "Air is an insulator, so the gap must change how heat moves." It does — by an amount swamped by everything else. The gap is thin, discontinuous and sits outside the column, not between flame and fuel, and the pool is heated from above rather than conducted sideways through the glass. The room varies more between a Chennai afternoon and a Shimla night than a fraction of a millimetre of trapped air ever will. "Then the wax must burn unevenly where it is not attached." Wax does not burn at the wall at all. Only the wick burns; wax is fuel delivered as a liquid, and the pool is level because liquids are level. Uneven pools come from an undersized or off-centre wick, or a draught, and they show up as tunnelling or a crescent — nothing like a wet spot.

Adhesion is a finish property. Wick, fuel and pool are function. Only one of those decides how a candle burns.

The one case where it does matter

The honest "no" has a boundary, and a supplier who will not tell you where it is has not earned the "no".

Everything above holds while the detached area is small and the column is still supported by the glass around it. It changes when the detachment is large in area, low on the jar, and open at the top. Then it stops being a pocket and becomes a channel.

The sequence runs like this. The melt pool descends as the candle burns, until the liquid level reaches the top edge of a large detached area. The wax there is not bonded to the glass, so liquid can run sideways and then down behind the remaining column into the void, where it pools against cold glass and sets. Fuel is stranded where the wick cannot reach it, the visible face gets a dried run of wax that looks like a leak, and the unsupported column above can slump or crack. That is a genuine defect and a genuinely worse candle — which is why it is worth separating from a 15 mm patch in the upper third.

Look at where it sits, not how many there areDivide the jar in half by eye. Patches entirely in the top half are cosmetic without exception: the pool reaches them near the end of the candle's life, when almost no wax is left to run anywhere. Eight small patches high up are less serious than one large patch low down.

Measure the width against the circumferenceOn a nominal 70 mm jar the circumference is about 220 mm. The working rule: one continuous detached area wider than roughly a third of it — about 73 mm — and extending below the halfway line is a fail. A sorting rule, not a laboratory threshold; tighten it for narrow jars or tall candles.

Check whether the top edge is open or sealedThe decisive test, and it takes two seconds. If the wax meets the glass cleanly at the top of the patch, the void is sealed and nothing can enter it. If a continuous line of separation runs upward from the patch toward the wax surface, wax can get in. Sealed is fine at any size. Open and low is not.

Burn oneIf a batch is borderline, burn one unit for four hours before deciding on the rest. A candle that will run wax down the void usually shows it within two burns, and one sacrificed candle at roughly ₹215 of materials is cheaper than a wrong call on forty, in either direction.
What to do with a fail. Do not sell it, and do not re-melt the surface with a hot air gun and hope — that fixes the top of the candle, not the wall bond forty millimetres down, and it will not close a channel. Strip the jar: warm it gently, lift the wax out whole, recover it for wax melts or seconds, wash and reuse the jar. You lose the wick at ₹5.90 and the labour; you keep the jar at ₹70.80 and most of the wax. Then read the prevention guide — large low detachment is nearly always a pour- or jar-temperature problem, and it is fixable at the bench.

One distinction, because these get confused in photographs: large detachment is not white patching or frosting on the surface of soy wax, which is crystalline and cosmetic, and it is not the general pull-away every soy candle shows to some degree. What actually changes how a candle burns

Attention is finite: three weeks chasing wall patches are three weeks not spent on the five variables that decide whether the candle is any good. Notice what is not on that list. Wall adhesion, frosting, surface dips, colour variation between batches — all finish, all worth improving because finish sells candles, but none of them is why a candle burns 32 hours instead of 40. When a customer says a candle burnt badly, the answer is almost always in the first row of that table and almost never in the glass.

The variable that actually decides the burn

Selling it, photographing it, and answering the message

The physics question is settled. The commercial question is separate, and it has a different answer for a single retail jar and for the eighth candle in a matched hamper.

Should you sell a candle with wet spots? For most of them, yes. The product performs as specified; discarding sound stock is not a higher standard, only a more expensive one. Sell them, and put one honest sentence on the care card so the customer meets the explanation before the patch. Against a 200g candle costing roughly ₹215 in materials that is 0.39% of unit cost, and it is the highest-return 0.39% on this page.

Say no in two situations. First, if the detachment fails the test in the exception section — large, low, open at the top. That is a functional judgement, and those units leave the batch. Second, if the candles are a matched set: a gift box, a corporate order, a wedding hamper. There the problem is the mismatch, not the patch — a customer who opens a box with two clean jars and one heavily patched has a built-in comparison and reads it as a quality-control failure. Sort matched sets so units in a box look alike, and sell the odd ones singly.

The care card sentence
"Made with natural soy wax. As soy cools it contracts slightly and can pull away from the glass in small patches. This is normal, it does not affect how your candle burns, and it often disappears once the candle is lit." That fits a 1.5 inch care sticker at ₹0.70 a unit, and it turns a complaint into a mark of a genuine soy candle — which is what it is.

Scrapping or discounting every patched jar absorbs a cost that does not exist in the product, straight out of margin. Work it against your own unit economics using the 2026 candle pricing guide before you call a batch "seconds".

Photographing candles that have wet spots, honestly. Retouching the patches out is a bad trade: the customer gets a jar that does not match the listing, which turns a non-issue into a returns conversation and a lost review. Photograph what you ship.

Do wet spots make a candle burn faster or slower?
Neither. Burn rate is set by how much fuel the wick draws and vaporises per hour, which depends on the wick, the wax and the melt pool. A wet spot is an air pocket outside the wax column and takes no part in that. Burn one patched and one clean candle from the same pour: the difference sits inside your own measurement error.
Are wet spots dangerous?
No. There is nothing flammable in the gap — it is air, not trapped moisture or leaked fragrance oil — and it does not weaken the glass, which is not under load from the wax. The real safety variables are wick size, keeping the wick trimmed, and not burning down past the last centimetre of wax. A patch on the wall changes none of them.
Will the wet spot disappear when the candle is lit?
Often, partly, and temporarily. Heat softens the wax nearest the wall and lets some of it re-wet the glass, so patches near the burn line can vanish during a burn and return as the candle cools. It is why a lit photograph is the most representative listing image, and why customers who light the candle before inspecting it rarely mention it.
When should I actually reject a candle for wet spots?
When a single continuous detached area is wider than roughly a third of the jar's circumference, extends below the halfway line, and is open at the top — meaning a line of separation runs upward from it toward the wax surface. That combination lets molten wax run down behind the column and pool against cold glass. On a nominal 70 mm jar a third of the circumference is about 73 mm. Treat it as a shop sorting rule, not a laboratory threshold.

Sell them at full price with a care-card line explaining the patch. If wet spots do not matter, why bother preventing them?
Because finish sells candles even when it does not change them. Clean wall contact photographs better, presents better in a hamper and generates fewer messages — and the fixes (pour temperature, jar temperature, cooling rate) are free once you know them.
