Quick answers — read this first
Does a wider candle throw more scent? A wider candle can release from more surface, because a full pool in a jar of stated 10 cm diameter is 78.54 cm² against 28.27 cm² in a jar of stated 6 cm diameter. But a wider candle also holds far more wax per square centimetre, so per gram of fragrance you own it often releases less.

What is the number to compare on? Surface per gram of fill. Navy Blue Shiny Glass Jar — stated "6 cm diameter", stated "Capacity: 120 gm" — gives 0.236 cm² per gram. The Apothecary jar at a stated 10 cm and a stated ~500 g gives 0.157, and at ~700 g just 0.112.

So small jars always win? For scent per rupee of oil, small and wide wins. For burn life per candle, and for filling a large room from one point, the wide jar wins. Pick the trade deliberately instead of inheriting it from whichever jar was in stock.

At what diameter do I need a second wick? There is no universal figure, and CSI does not publish one. The only numeric clue in the range is on Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made, "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm". Past roughly that width the question stops being which wick and becomes how many.
The short answer
Diameter is a ceiling, not a dial: the widest pool you can ever have is the inside of the glass. The wick decides what fraction of that ceiling you actually reach; the diameter decided how high the ceiling was.
Compare vessels on cm² per gram: across CSI's stated-diameter jars that figure runs from 0.44 (a 5.3 cm heart jar holding up to 50 g) down to 0.11 (a 10 cm apothecary filled to ~700 g). Same oil, same load, four times the release surface per gram of fragrance.
Above about 8 cm, budget for more than one wick: wider glass needs more flame to reach the wall, and CSI's own large-diameter wick page draws the line at "exceeding 8 cm". Two wicks do not raise the ceiling — they help you reach it.

Every area here is π × (stated diameter ÷ 2)², using the diameter each product page states, and every "per gram" figure divides that area by the same page's stated fill. The bottom two bars are the same jar filled two ways: identical releasing surface, 40% more wax underneath it, and a candle that has to give its fragrance away through the same 78.54 cm².
Straight answer
Does the diameter of a candle change how strongly it smells when burning?
Yes — it sets the maximum. Fragrance leaves a burning candle by evaporating from the melt pool, and the pool can never be wider than the inside of the vessel, so diameter is the hard ceiling on releasing surface. Widening from a stated 6 cm to a stated 10 cm raises that ceiling from 28.27 cm² to 78.54 cm², because area grows as the square of the width. But the same step also multiplies the wax under the surface: the Navy Blue Shiny Glass Jar states 120 gm in 6 cm, while the Apothecary jar states ~500 g in 10 cm. Per gram of fill that is 0.236 cm² against 0.157 cm², so the big candle releases from less surface for every gram of fragrance you paid for. Wider also makes the pool harder to open: a single Eco Candle Wick that reaches the wall in a 6 cm jar will usually leave a solid ring in a 10 cm one, and CSI's large-diameter wick page is written for candles "exceeding 8 cm". So the honest answer is three answers: diameter raises the ceiling, lowers surface per gram, and raises the number of wicks you must test. Decide it first, because it is the only one of the five throw variables you cannot change after the wax has set — the others are covered in the wick guide and the wax guide.
One line: diameter buys you a bigger ceiling and charges you in surface per gram and in wicks — choose it for the room and the burn life you want, then let the wick chase the wall.

Diameter is a ceiling, and you build it before you pour

Every other throw variable can be revised next batch. This one is fired into glass.

A burning candle releases fragrance from one place: the warm liquid surface at the top. Everything below that surface is inventory. So the question "does diameter affect hot throw" is really the question "how big can that surface get" — and the answer is fixed by the glass. A pool cannot be wider than the vessel. Choosing a 6 cm jar is choosing a maximum of 28.27 cm²; choosing a 10 cm jar is choosing a maximum of 78.54 cm². Nothing you do later moves those two numbers.

The arithmetic is worth doing by hand once, because it is not intuitive. Area is π × (diameter ÷ 2)², so a jar that is 67% wider has 2.8 times the surface: from 6 cm to 10 cm the width goes up by a factor of 1.67 and the area by 1.67², which is 2.78. That squaring is why a modest-looking step up in jar size feels like a different product class, and it is also why the wick that suited the narrow jar is now undersized by a wide margin rather than a small one.

The mistake this page exists to prevent. A maker with a quiet 120 g candle moves the same recipe into a 500 g jar to "make it stronger", keeps the same wick, and gets a worse candle: the pool stalls somewhere in the middle of the glass, so the releasing surface is smaller in absolute terms than it was in the small jar, and there is now four times as much wax and oil sitting underneath doing nothing. The jar went up. The pool went down. Diameter only pays if the wick can reach the wall.

Two other stated numbers are worth keeping in view when you go wide. The Apothecary jar page states "Safe for hot-pour up to 85°C", which sits below the 80–90°C pour band stated on the Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 page — so a wide-jar recipe may need the cooler end of your wax's range, or a wax whose stated pour temperature is lower, such as Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 at a stated 58–60°C. And the Steel Wick Holder states it "Fits most jar diameters (up to 9 cm wide)" — at 10 cm you are outside the tool's stated span and will be centring wicks another way.

Surface per gram — the comparison the jar aisle never makes

Two candles, the same oil, the same load. One gives every gram of fragrance four times as much window to leave by.

Full pool area tells you what the vessel allows. It does not tell you what your fragrance budget is getting. For that, divide the area by the wax the page says the jar holds. The result — square centimetres of releasing surface per gram of fill — is the single most useful vessel number in this cluster, because at a fixed load, grams of fill and grams of oil move together. A jar with 0.24 cm² per gram is giving each gram of your oil roughly twice the exit that a jar with 0.11 cm² per gram gives it.

Most CSI jars state ml, not grams
The 7 cm matte and frosted jars state a "fill weight of 200 ml", which is a volume. Wax is not water, so do not treat 200 ml as 200 g in a costing sheet or a load calculation. Pour one jar to your fill line, weigh it, and use that figure for the rest of the run. Until you have, the 0.192 figure in the table above is per millilitre of stated capacity, not per gram — which is exactly why the weighing takes precedence over the label.

Depth is the other half of the same decision

Surface per gram has a mirror image: grams per square centimetre, which is how much fuel sits under every square centimetre of pool. Divide the stated fill by the pool area and you get the depth of the candle in the only unit that matters for burn life. The 6 cm jar at 120 gm carries 4.24 g of fill per cm². The 10 cm jar at 500 g carries 6.37 g per cm² — half again as much wax beneath each square centimetre of surface.

That is the trade, stated plainly. The narrow jar is louder per gram and empties sooner. The wide jar is quieter per gram and lasts longer per unit. Neither is a fault; they are two products. What is a fault is selling the wide one to a customer who wanted the loud one, or the narrow one to a customer who complained that the candle "ran out quickly". Diameter is a product-line decision disguised as a packaging decision.

Where the wide jar quietly wins. A candle in a 10 cm vessel has one advantage no small jar can copy: 78.54 cm² released from a single point, with a wide, visible pool and a long life. For a shop counter, a hotel lobby, a reception desk or a gifted centrepiece, that is the product. Just do not expect it to be the strongest thing per gram in your catalogue, and do not price it as if the oil in it were working as hard.

Matching diameter to the room — and why you must build this table yourself

No CSI page publishes a coverage figure in square metres, and no honest one could. Rooms differ more than candles do.

Makers ask which jar suits which room. There is no published answer: not one of the 107 CSI fragrance-oil pages states a room size, a coverage area or a throw distance, and a supplier who invents one is guessing on your behalf. What you can do is build the ratio for your own candles once, then reuse it. The ratio is releasing surface per cubic metre of room — pool area in cm² divided by room volume in m³ — and it is the only figure that connects a candle's physics to a customer's living room.

Read that last column carefully, because it is the commercially useful one. If a customer is happy with one 6 cm candle in a bedroom, the same satisfaction in a 52 m³ living room needs about twice the releasing surface — which you can supply as two 6 cm candles, or as one 10 cm candle whose 78.54 cm² over-delivers against the same ratio. That is a range decision, an upsell and a care instruction, all falling out of one division.

Calibrate the ratio, don't borrow it
Volumes here assume a 2.6 m ceiling and are arithmetic, not a claim about performance. The number you actually need is the ratio at which your oil, in your wax, at your load, satisfied a real customer in a real room — so write it down the first time it happens. One line per scent: room volume, candle diameter, pool area, load, cure days, verdict. After five entries you have a coverage rule nobody can sell you. Existing CSI reading on scent and room type sits in best fragrances for small bedrooms and for large living rooms.

Where one wick stops being enough

A wick heats wax outward from a point. The further the glass is from that point, the more heat has to travel, and heat spreads over area — the same squaring that gave you the bigger ceiling now works against the flame that has to fill it. This is why wide candles are multi-wick candles in almost every commercial range, and why the wick decision changes character as diameter grows: at 5 to 7 cm you are choosing a size, and somewhere past 8 cm you are choosing a count.

CSI publishes very little numeric wick guidance, and this page will not invent any. What exists is worth quoting exactly: Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made are "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm" with a stated "Height of the wick is 10.16 cm"; Eco Candle Wicks Loose are "designed specifically for 2 inch diameters", which is 5.08 cm; Eco Braided Wicks are called "the perfect solution for large diameter container jars" with no number attached. The Eco Candle Wicks that most makers start with state nothing about diameter at all: Thin (C1) and Thick (C2) are variant names, not sizing advice.

Two wicks do not raise the ceiling. This is the most common misreading of multi-wick candles. Two flames in a 10 cm jar still produce one merged pool capped at 78.54 cm² — the same ceiling one wick had. What the second wick buys is the ability to reach that ceiling, and it buys it by consuming more wax per hour, which shortens burn life. If a single wick already takes the pool to the glass cleanly in two to three hours, a second wick is not an upgrade; it is a faster candle with more soot risk.

One wide candle or several narrow ones — the arithmetic

Same wax, same oil, same load. The only difference is how many pieces of glass you divide it into.

Take roughly half a kilo of finished candle and spend it two ways. Option A is one candle in the 10 cm Apothecary jar at its stated ~500 g. Option B is four candles in stated 6 cm jars at a stated 120 gm each, which is 480 g. Both are poured at an 8% load, from Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹599 per kg and Palo Santo Fragrance Oil at ₹601.80 per 100 gm, which is ₹6.018 per gram at both the 100 gm and the 1 kg size.

Splitting the same materials four ways gives 44% more releasing surface for ₹45.45 less in materials, and it gives you four price points instead of one. What it costs you is four pours, four wick trials, four labels and a shorter burn life per unit. For a brand selling into Indian homes with more small rooms than large ones, that is usually the better side of the trade — but it is a trade, and the wide candle keeps the counter presence and the long life.

The CSI principle
The wick is a question you can re-ask every batch. The diameter is a question you answer once, in glass, for the life of the product.
Which is why diameter should be decided against the room you are selling into and the burn life you are promising — and why the wick trial that follows belongs to that diameter alone. A wick proven in 6 cm has proven nothing about 10 cm.

The six-jar diameter test, costed honestly

This is the most expensive test in this cluster, and that is the finding, not a complaint.

Every other variable in the hot-throw family can be tested inside one jar size. Diameter cannot: each width needs its own wick trial, because the wick that reaches the wall at 6 cm will not at 10 cm. So the honest test crosses three diameters with two wick options each — six jars, one pour session, one wax, one oil, one load, one cure length — and it costs real money, which is precisely the argument for settling diameter before a range is designed rather than after.

Measure the pool, then convert it to area before you form an opinion.At 60, 120 and 180 minutes, measure the widest point of the liquid pool with a steel rule and record millimetres. Convert with π × (width ÷ 2)². A pool "nearly at the glass" in a 10 cm jar can be 20% of the surface short; the same words in a 6 cm jar mean something quite different. Record flame height, soot and any mushrooming at each reading.

Score the room, not the jar.Walk out, wait ten minutes, walk back in, and score 1–5 on entry — by someone who did not pour the batch, from the doorway, with the room volume written down. Then divide each candle's measured pool area by that room volume and you have the first entries in your own coverage table.

Set that ₹3,447.30 against what it protects. If you design a range around a 10 cm jar and only afterwards discover that it needs three wicks to open the pool and still reads quieter per gram than your 6 cm candle, you are re-buying glass, re-testing wicks and re-costing a product line. The test is a week of patience and one evening of burning. The alternative is a catalogue built on a guess.

What diameter cannot fix

Diameter raises a ceiling. It does not put anything on the ceiling. If the candle is quiet for a reason that has nothing to do with surface, widening the glass simply gives the same problem more room. Three cases are worth naming, because each one wastes money on jars.

A short cure. A candle judged at 48 hours is being judged before the wax and oil have settled into each other; the honest comparison is a sister jar at day 14 or later, which is the whole argument of the cure-and-throw guide. A load below the wax's stated range. If you are pouring 5% into a wax whose page states 8–13%, there is headroom to use before there is glass to buy. An oil whose structure has nothing left in hour two. A bright, top-weighted blend can read loud cold and thin hot no matter how wide the pool is; that pattern has its own diagnosis in the strong-cold, weak-lit guide.

Do the free checks before the glass order. Cure a sister jar to day 14. Confirm your load against the number printed on your wax page. Measure the pool you are actually getting in the jar you already own, and convert it to cm². If the pool is reaching the wall and the candle is still quiet at a full cure and a full load, then diameter is a live lever — and you will know how much surface you are buying before you pay for it.

Frequently asked questions

Does a wider candle jar give a stronger hot throw?
It raises the maximum. A full pool in a jar of stated 10 cm diameter is 78.54 cm² against 28.27 cm² at a stated 6 cm, and fragrance leaves from that surface. Two conditions apply. The wick has to actually open the pool to the glass, which usually means more than one wick above roughly 8 cm. And the wide jar holds far more wax, so per gram of fragrance the surface is smaller — 0.157 cm² per gram at a stated ~500 g fill against 0.236 in the 6 cm jar.
What candle diameter is best for a bedroom?
No supplier can answer that honestly, and no CSI page states a coverage figure. What you can do is build the ratio. A 3.0 × 3.5 m bedroom at a 2.6 m ceiling is 27.3 m³, and one candle at a stated 6 cm diameter offers 1.04 cm² of full pool per m³. Score a real candle in that room, at a full cure, and write the ratio down. Then use it: a 52 m³ living room needs about twice that surface — two 6 cm candles, or one wide one.
How many wicks does a 10 cm candle need?
More than one, and the exact number is a test rather than a chart. CSI's only numeric statement on large diameters is on Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made, "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm" at ₹12 each. Start by comparing two against three in identical jars from the same pour, and judge on whether the pool reaches the glass in two to three hours without soot or mushrooming. Remember that extra wicks do not enlarge the ceiling — they help you reach it, and they shorten burn life.
Is it better to sell one large candle or several smaller ones?
On releasing surface per rupee, smaller wins. The same materials split into four candles at a stated 6 cm give 113.10 cm² for ₹719.21 of materials — ₹6.36 per cm² — against 78.54 cm² for ₹764.66, or ₹9.74 per cm², in one ~500 g jar at a stated 10 cm. Smaller also gives you more price points and more placement in the room. The large candle wins on burn life per unit, on counter presence, and on the number of pours and labels you have to manage.
My big candle smells weaker than my small one with the same recipe. Why?
Two likely reasons, and you can separate them with a ruler. Either the pool is not reaching the glass — measure its width at two and three hours, convert with π × (width ÷ 2)², and compare with the jar's stated diameter — or it is reaching the glass and the candle is simply releasing from less surface per gram of oil than the small one. The first is a wick problem with a ₹12 to ₹36 answer. The second is geometry, and the fix is a different diameter or a different product promise.
Do CSI jars state their diameter?
Some do, and only those are used for arithmetic on this page. Stated examples include "5.3 cm in diameter" on the Heart Cutout Velvet Jar, "6 cm diameter" on the shiny 120 gm jars, "Diameter - 6cm" on the Shot Glass Jar, "width 7 cm" on the 200 ml matte jars, "Base diameter Approximately 6.5 cm" on the 150 gram Clear Glass Jar, and "Base diameter: Approx. 10 cm" on the Apothecary jar. Many jars state only a capacity — often in millilitres rather than grams — in which case measure the inside of the glass yourself and weigh one filled jar.
