Does Cold Throw Predict Hot Throw?

Does a weak cold throw mean a weak hot throw? Usually, but not always — and the exceptions matter. Heavy compositions such as oud, wood and dense gourmand bases are quiet unlit and can be powerful lit. The Woody Oud page notes that oud benefits from a full cure for cold throw development. Burn a heavy oil before you drop it.
Why does my candle smell strong in the jar and weak when lit? Measure the melt pool at three hours before blaming the oil. A 50 mm pool in a 70 mm jar exposes about 51% of the wax surface (19.63 cm² of 38.48 cm²), while the cold reading used all of it. Stepping from an Eco C1 to a C2 wick costs ₹3.54 a candle.
How should I test cold throw and hot throw together? On one jar, on one day, at day 14. Score cold 0–3 on opening, then light it and score hot at one, two and three hours in a closed room with the fan off, and record the pair. One 200 g candle in a lidded jar is ₹274.28 on Woody Oud.
The answer is yes in one direction and no in the other
The prediction is not symmetrical, and almost every argument about this question comes from treating it as if it were. A candle that is genuinely silent in the jar at day fourteen, opened in a small closed room, with a lid that has been on, will very rarely turn into a room-filler when you light it. That makes cold throw a genuinely useful negative screen: it costs nothing, it happens before you burn anything, and it flags candles worth investigating.
Run it the other way and it falls apart. A candle that is loud in the jar may be loud because the composition carries a large, light, fast-evaporating top — and those are exactly the materials that contribute least to what a burning candle puts into a room over three hours. Cold throw over-reports light compositions and under-reports heavy ones, so a strong cold reading tells you that something volatile is present and available, and very little about what happens at the melt pool.
The practical consequence is a rule of order rather than a rule of truth. Use the unlit jar to decide which candles you burn first, never to decide which oil you buy a kilogram of. At ₹4,531.20 a kilogram for Woody Oud against ₹271.40 for 50 gm, the difference between deciding on a sniff and deciding on a burn is real money — and the sniff takes two minutes where the burn takes three hours and a fortnight of cure first.
Two readings, two different machines
The two throws share an oil and share nothing else. Setting the two systems side by side explains every exception on this page without any need for chemistry beyond what a candle maker already knows.

One number from that table is worth doing properly, because it surprises people. The cold reading uses the entire wax surface of the jar. A 70 mm jar has a surface of about 38.48 cm², and every square centimetre of it is contributing to what you smell when the lid comes off. The hot reading uses only the melt pool. A candle whose pool is 50 mm across at three hours is exposing about 19.63 cm² — around 51% of the same surface. At 58 mm it is 26.42 cm² or about 69%; at 63 mm, 31.17 cm² or about 81%.
That is the single most common reason a candle reads loud cold and quiet hot, and the fix is a wick, not an oil. Stepping from an Eco Candle Wick Thin C1 at ₹5.90 to a Thick C2 at ₹9.44 costs ₹3.54 a candle. Buying a different oil at ₹4,531.20 a kilogram to solve the same symptom costs rather more, and does not solve it.
The second reason is compositional. Cold throw is a ranking of what evaporates at room temperature on its own. Base materials — ouds, woods, resins, ambers, vanillin-carrying gourmand bases — are heavier and do very little of that. In a heated pool they behave completely differently and are, in many compositions, the part that actually fills a room. An oil built mostly of those materials is structurally set up to under-read cold and over-deliver hot, which is the sleeper in the top-left of the grid.
The four outcomes, and what each one is telling you
Strong cold, strong hot — the readings agree
Nothing to diagnose. Both readings point the same way, the candle does what your listing says, and the only decision left is cost per candle. Blue Ocean at ₹79.30 of oil in a 200 g candle, Jasmine at ₹62.77 and Woody Oud at ₹72.50 all sit in this corner on their own page descriptions, and all three pages describe strength in cold and hot terms in the same sentence.
Weak cold, strong hot — the sleeper
The expensive mistake. An oud, a sandalwood, a heavy gourmand or a tobacco-and-coffee base is quiet in an unlit jar because there is not much in it that evaporates unaided at 28°C. Light it and the pool releases material the jar never could. This is the oil that gets dropped after a two-minute shelf sniff and reappears in a competitor’s bestseller two seasons later. The Woody Oud page itself notes that oud benefits from a full cure for cold throw development, which is a polite way of saying the unlit jar is the last part to arrive.
Strong cold, weak hot — the trap
Two possible causes, and they need separating before you touch the fragrance. Either the composition is genuinely top-heavy, which is normal for citrus, aquatic and light fresh families — the Citrus Lemon page places it in the citrus and fresh family and notes that citrus benefits from a full cure for best cold throw — or the burning system is not exposing enough wax. Measure the pool at three hours before drawing any conclusion about the oil. A 50 mm pool in a 70 mm jar is 51% of the surface at any load.
Weak cold, weak hot — a real problem, in a fixed order
Now the oil is a legitimate suspect, but still not the first one. Check the load against both ceilings — the wax grade’s stated maximum and the oil page’s stated candle range, with the lower governing. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states up to 10% of wax weight; Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 state up to 13%; Eco Soy CSI 400 does not publish a ceiling, so ask on WhatsApp rather than assume. Then check cure age — the Chunks page asks for a minimum of 48 hours and ideally one to two weeks. Only then change the oil.
Where the prediction breaks even when the oil is fine
Most reported mismatches between cold and hot throw are not the oil being inconsistent. They are the two readings being taken under conditions that were never comparable. Six of these account for nearly all of it.

What the product pages do and do not tell you
It is worth being exact about the evidence available, because it is thinner than the internet suggests. Some CSI oil pages describe throw strength in words. Some describe it for both cold and hot in the same phrase. Some describe only the hot side. Most say nothing about throw at all. None of them publishes a measurement, a scale, or a relationship between the two — and no supplier anywhere publishes a cold-to-hot ratio, because there is no agreed method to produce one.

Read that table as a map of what is described, not of what is true. The bottom four are the interesting ones: pages that talk about hot throw in strong terms and are silent about the jar. That silence is not a claim of weakness and should not be read as one — but it does mean that if you buy those oils on a shelf sniff, you are judging them on the one axis their own page never mentions. Mahogany Teakwood at 9% on a 200 g candle is ₹158.40 of oil; the honest way to evaluate it is a burn, not a sniff.
Reading both together: the paired score
Since neither reading predicts the other reliably, stop trying to make one stand in for the other and start recording them as a pair. Over eight or ten oils in your own wax, in your own jar, a pattern appears that is worth more than any supplier’s adjectives, because it is measured in the exact system you sell.
What the asymmetry costs, in rupees
Three decisions follow from this page, and it is worth pricing each of them at the series unit — 200 g of CSI 464 with 16 g of oil at 8% of wax weight, an Eco C1 wick and a lidded 150 gram jar.

The commercial version of the same arithmetic: a thirty-jar run of a Woody Oud candle is ₹8,228.38 in wax, oil, wick and glass. If a shelf sniff talks you out of that scent, you never see the loss. If a shelf sniff talks you into a scent that reads loud in the jar and disappears when it is lit, you see the loss twice — once in the stock and once in the customer who does not reorder. Both errors are removed by the same ₹819.96 of testing.
Two honest caveats to finish. Raising the load does not convert a 1/3 into a 3/3: going to 10% of wax weight on a 200 g candle is 20 g of oil, ₹90.62 on Woody Oud, and it raises both readings a little without changing the shape of the composition. And lids are the one lever that moves the cold side substantially without touching the oil at all — ₹2,832.00 fits lids across a thirty-jar batch, which is a far smaller number than a fragrance change.
