How Do I Compare Candle Waxes for Adhesion Without Accidentally Changing Multiple Formulation Variables at Once?
Aktie
Same pour temperature for every wax? No — CSI's wax pages do not share a range. Pour each at its own page figure, measured and recorded.
How do I stop position bias? Rotate rack positions and pour order so every wax sits at every edge, and code the jars so the scorer cannot tell them apart.
What does it cost? ₹2,686.80 in CSI materials for four arms of three jars; one 500 g bag per candidate.
Change the wax and nothing else — then hide which is which
When you swap one wax for another, a surprising number of other things move with it. The new wax arrives with a fresh oil bottle because the old one ran low. It gets poured later in the afternoon when the room has cooled. It sits at the end of the bench nearest the window. It is filled to the same line, though it weighs differently. It is photographed a day earlier because you were curious. Each of those is a second variable, and any one of them can be the real cause of a better or worse result. Adhesion is especially vulnerable, because glass temperature, cooling position, cleaning and timing are all commonly described as affecting wet spots on their own.
The fix is a written comparison protocol with three lists: what is held fixed for every jar, what is legitimately part of each wax, and what is randomised so that no wax gets a systematic advantage. Add coded jars and a blind scorer, and a difference that survives is very likely the wax. This page builds that protocol. It does not tell you which CSI wax will win: the Chunks, CSI 464 and CSI 468 pages all claim excellent glass adhesion, so the claim cannot rank them, and CSI publishes no adhesion data for any wax.
The worked example compares four arms in CSI's 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar, filled to an illustrative weighed 170 g (the Salsa jar's fill weight is not published — weigh yours): your current wax as the control, plus three CSI candidates, all with Citrus Lemon at 8% — 13.6 g of oil and 156.4 g of wax per jar. 8% sits inside every published ceiling, including CSI 464's 10%.
Eleven things that change when you change the wax
Read the table as a checklist before pouring. The last column sorts each item into fixed, part of the wax, randomised or blind. Most makers find two or three items in the middle column that they have been letting slide.
| What can move | How it sneaks in | How to hold it | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fragrance load | CSI 464's page states 10%; a maker running 12% in Chunks and 10% in CSI 464 is comparing loads | One load inside every ceiling — 8% here | Fixed |
| Oil bottle and lot | A fresh bottle for the new wax and the old one for the control | One bottle, one lot, weighed per jar | Fixed |
| Fill | Filling to a line instead of a weight lets wax density decide how much candle each jar gets | Weigh every fill — 170 g here | Fixed |
| Pour temperature | Pouring every wax at the same figure puts some outside their own page range | Each wax at its own page figure, measured and recorded | Part of the wax |
| Melt history | One wax held hot for an hour while the others are melted fresh | Melt each wax just before its pour slot; log time at temperature | Part of the wax, logged |
| Jar lot and cleaning | New jars for one arm, older stock for another | One delivery, one cleaning routine, jars dealt to arms at random | Fixed / random |
| Wick | A different wick for one wax 'because it needs it' | One wick from one pack; wick is tested later, separately | Fixed |
| Rack position | All of one wax at the cold end of the bench | Rotated plan: each arm in each row and at each edge | Randomised |
| Pour order and time | Control poured first, candidates an hour later as the room cools | Rotated pour order; all arms within one session | Randomised |
| Cure age at reading | Photographing the control on day 7 and the candidates on day 5 | Every jar read at the same age from its own pour time | Fixed |
| Scoring | The maker scoring jars they know | Coded jars; a second person scores photographs blind | Blind |
The hard one: pour temperature is part of the wax
Pour temperature is where honest makers disagree. One view: pour every wax at the same temperature, so temperature is fixed. The trouble is that CSI's wax pages do not share a range. The Chunks spec table gives 75–80°C (its step list shows 70–80°C); the CSI 464 page gives an 80–90°C melt/pour working range; the CSI 468 page gives 58–60°C. Any single figure puts at least one wax outside its own page — pour everything at 78°C and CSI 468 is roughly 18°C above its page while CSI 464 is below its range. You would be testing how each wax copes with the wrong temperature.
The fairer comparison of waxes as they are meant to be used is each wax at its own page figure, measured with the Pen Thermometer at the moment of pouring and recorded. That makes temperature part of the wax, deliberately and visibly. It is a different question from "which wax adheres best at 78°C?", and if that is your real question — because your process cannot change temperature — run it as its own comparison and say so on the sheet. What you must never do is let temperature vary by accident: same thermometer, same moment of measurement, same jug, each arm inside its own figure.
| Wax | Page figure | Pour in this test (example) | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | Pour 75–80°C (spec table); steps show 70–80°C; fragrance addition 80–90°C | 78°C, measured | Middle of the spec-table range |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 80–90°C melt/pour range | 80°C, measured | Bottom of the range; confirm the Salsa jar's tolerance on WhatsApp before pouring hotter |
| Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 | Pour 58–60°C; melting point 50–53°C | 59°C, measured | Middle of the range |
| Your current wax | Its maker's figure | Your production figure | The control runs exactly as in production |
The jar matters here too. CSI's Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram) states hot pour up to 85°C; the Salsa jar's page publishes no limit. Follow the jar supplier's instructions, ask us before pouring at the top of CSI 464's range into a jar without a stated limit, and keep every pour at or below what the jar allows. The thicker-glass post shows how a jar limit can cut a wax's range short.
The rotated rack plan and the coded sheet
Three rows of four positions hold 12 jars — three per arm. In each row every arm appears once, and the order rotates so each arm sits at an edge at least once and in the middle at least once. Pour order rotates the same way: in row 1 arm K pours first, in row 2 arm P, in row 3 arm Q, so no arm always pours into the warmest or coolest part of the session. Code the arms K, P, Q and R on masking tape on the base, and keep the key in an envelope until scoring is finished.
| Row | Position 1 (edge) | Position 2 | Position 3 | Position 4 (edge) | Pour order |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Row 1 | K | P | Q | R | K → P → Q → R |
| Row 2 | Q | R | K | P | P → Q → R → K |
| Row 3 | R | K | P | Q | Q → R → K → P |
Photograph every jar through the glass against a plain light background from four marked sides at pour day, 48 hours, 7 days, after a temperature cycle and 30 days, in a shuffled order each time, and file the photos by code. A second person scores them on your house scale. Unblind only when every jar at every checkpoint is scored.
| Jar | Code | Row / position | Pour slot | Pour °C (measured) | 48 h | 7 d | After cycle | 30 d | Tops / frosting |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | K | 1 / 1 | 1 | ___ | _ | _ | _ | _ | _ |
| 2 | P | 1 / 2 | 2 | ___ | _ | _ | _ | _ | _ |
| 5 | Q | 2 / 1 | 1 | ___ | _ | _ | _ | _ | _ |
| 12 | Q | 3 / 4 | 2 | ___ | _ | _ | _ | _ | _ |
| Session | Room start/end ___°C | Fan / AC off | Oil lot ___ | Jar delivery ___ | Wax lots ___ | Wick pack ___ | Cleaning: IPA, dry | Scorer ___ | Key sealed: yes |
Write the decision rule on the sheet before pouring — for example, "a candidate beats the control if its arm mean is at least one grade lower at 7 days and after the cycle, with no jar above grade 1". The thresholds are your house standard; no industry figure exists. What to record when comparing adhesion lists further fields worth keeping, and how many jars per wax to pour goes deeper into arm size.
The session, step by step
Three jars per arm is a screening practice. Each extra Salsa jar costs about ₹180.50 in CSI materials (jar at the pack-of-5 rate, 156.4 g of Chunks at the 1 kg rate, 13.6 g of Citrus Lemon at the 100 g rate and an example Eco Thin C1 wick). Going to five jars per arm adds 8 jars and lifts the kit from ₹2,686.80 to ₹4,177.80 on listed packs. Do it when the screen produces a close call between two waxes, not by default.
The priced comparison kit
Priced from listed in-stock CSI packs with a 5% pour-loss allowance. Your current wax is the control and is not priced. Each candidate needs 492.7 g — inside a single 500 g bag.
| Item | Need | Buy | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar | 12 jars | 3 × pack of 5 | ₹601.80 |
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | 492.7 g | 1 × 500 g | ₹299.00 |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 492.7 g | 1 × 500 g | ₹260.00 |
| Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 | 492.7 g | 1 × 500 g | ₹325.00 |
| Citrus Lemon at 8% | 171.4 g | 2 × 100 g | ₹600.00 |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 (one pack, every jar) | 12 + 2 | 1 × pack of 20 | ₹118.00 |
| Wick stickers | 12 | 1 × sheet of 40 | ₹100.00 |
| Isopropyl Alcohol Spray | Every jar | 1 × 150 ml | ₹383.00 |
| CSI total | ₹2,686.80 |
The wick is held constant on purpose: this test is about the glass, and a wick that suits one wax is a separate burn test after a wax is chosen. CSI publishes no wick size for the Salsa jar. Natural Soy Pearl Wax is a fourth possible candidate, but its page publishes no pour temperature, ceiling or adhesion statement, so it cannot be placed on the "own page figure" footing — ask us on WhatsApp for the maker's instructions before including it.
What a fair test saves
The value of the protocol is that it stops you buying the wrong wax. In CSI materials, a 50-candle production run in this jar costs roughly ₹8,379.94 with Chunks at the 5 kg rate, Citrus Lemon at the 1 kg rate, an example wick and the Salsa jar at the 50-pack rate (₹29.50). If an unfair comparison picks a wax whose advantage was really a warm corner of the bench, that run can spot as badly as before — and the wax change will already have re-opened wick, load, cure and throw validation. A ₹2,686.80 comparison that you can believe is cheap insurance.
| Wax | 500 g | 1 kg | 5 kg | 10 kg |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | ₹598.00/kg | ₹599.00/kg | ₹599.00/kg | ₹599.90/kg |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | ₹520.00/kg | ₹507.40/kg | ₹507.40/kg | ₹507.40/kg |
| Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 | ₹650.00/kg | ₹650.00/kg | ₹637.00/kg | ₹637.00/kg |
Read the table before ordering production wax: Chunks is cheapest per kg in the 500 g bag and slightly dearer in the 10 kg bag than in two 5 kg bags; CSI 464 is flat at 1, 5 and 10 kg; CSI 468 drops from the 1 kg price at 5 kg and stays there at 10 kg. Quantities beyond listed packs are quoted on WhatsApp; no discount figure is published.
The decision rule
| If this is true | It means | Do / buy |
|---|---|---|
| All four arms score alike | The wax is not the cause | Buy nothing. Go back to process checks |
| The control is best or equal-best | No adhesion case for a switch | Keep your wax; buy nothing for adhesion |
| One candidate beats the control by your rule, through the cycle | A clear winner in this jar | Buy a 1 kg bag; run wick, load and throw validation next |
| Two candidates beat the control and tie | Adhesion does not separate them | Choose on throw, burn, frosting and cost — the capstone |
| A winner here, but you sell other jars | Qualified in this jar only | Confirm it in your other jar families — shape in qualification |
A winning wax is not yet a production wax. The retest-scope post lists what a wax change re-opens; stress-testing with your hardest oil and darkest dye is the natural next comparison, run on the same rack plan.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. Three of the waxes on this rack are ours, and all three pages make the same adhesion claim. We publish no adhesion data for any of them, and the protocol on this page is built so that your current wax can win — in which case the honest advice is to keep it.

Non-price figures and assumptions: Load convention: fragrance load is a share of the finished candle (oil = W × L; wax = W × (1 − L)). Illustrative Salsa fill 170 g (not published) at 8% (13.6 g oil + 156.4 g wax). Density figures 0.86 and 0.90 g/ml are labelled illustrations, not CSI data. Example pour temperatures sit inside each wax page's own range. Working practices: 3 jars per arm (5 priced as an option), rotated rack and pour order, coded jars, blind scorer, 5% pour loss, photo checkpoints at pour day, 48 hours, 7 days, after a temperature cycle and 30 days, example cycle 8 h warm / 16 h room for 3–5 cycles, example 0–4 scale and decision thresholds. Production example uses 5 kg Chunks, 1 kg Citrus Lemon, the Salsa 50-pack rate and an example Eco Thin C1 wick. What CSI's product pages state (quoted, not CSI test results): Luxury Soy Wax Chunks — maximum fragrance load 13%, fragrance addition 80–90°C, pour 75–80°C in the spec table (the step list also shows 70–80°C), stir 2 minutes, cure minimum 48 hours, ideally 1–2 weeks, and "excellent adhesion to glass and container surfaces reduces wet spots and pull-away"; Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 — fragrance load up to 10%, an 80–90°C melt/pour working range, "excellent glass adhesion", single-pour, low frosting; Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 — melting point 50–53°C, pour 58–60°C, fragrance load up to 13%, "formulated for excellent glass adhesion and a one-pour finish"; Natural Soy Pearl — no fragrance ceiling, temperature, cure or adhesion statement published. Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram) — thick-walled clear glass, approximately 150 g wax fill, about 8 cm tall with lid, rim about 7 cm, base about 6.5 cm, "safe for hot pour up to 85°C". All three wax pages make the same adhesion claim, so the claim cannot rank them. CSI publishes no adhesion, wet-spot, shrinkage, contraction or frosting data for any wax, oil, dye or jar, no glass thickness in millimetres, no internal jar diameters and no wick-size-per-jar chart; no industry acceptance threshold for wet spots exists. Mechanisms (wax contraction as it cools and crystallises, glass temperature, cooling rate, residues, temperature cycling, load and dye effects) are general candle-making knowledge, phrased as commonly described. Material costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November.
