How do I compare fragrance oils by cost per finished candle? Fragrance ₹ per candle = candle grams × load × price per gram at the pack you buy. A 200 g candle at 8% holds 16 g, so CSI's Lavender at ₹5.22 a gram (1 kg) costs ₹83.54 a candle and Citrus Lemon at ₹2.83 a gram costs ₹45.31. Use the load your own burn test approved; anything else is a planning estimate.

Why does price per kilo mislead? Because oils do not need the same load, and small packs cost far more per gram. Across seven CSI candle oils the kilo price spans 2.70 times, yet in our worked test Eucalyptus Spearmint at 8% (₹49.09) beats Citrus Lemon at 10% (₹56.64) per candle, though it costs more per kilo.

How much does pack size change it? More than most oil swaps. 16 g of Citrus Lemon costs ₹86.85 from 15 g bottles and ₹45.31 from a 1 kg pack. But some steps save nothing: Woody Oud costs the same per gram from 100 g to 1 kg, and Lavender's 50 g and 100 g are both ₹5.40 a gram.

What should I log? One row per oil: pack and price paid, ₹ per gram, approved load and the test that approved it, grams and ₹ per candle, and the date. The table below is a ready template at 6, 8 and 10% for 150 g and 200 g candles; replace our loads with your test results before you compare.
The short answer
Formula: candle grams × approved load × ₹ per gram (at your pack). For a full formulation cost add the wax: (candle grams − oil grams) × wax ₹ per gram.
The table: seven CSI oils at 6/8/10% in a 200 g candle run from ₹33.98 (Citrus Lemon, 6%) to ₹152.92 (Dark Vanilla, 10%), at 1 kg prices.
Effective cost: only at the load your test approves. Worked: Eucalyptus Spearmint 8% ₹49.09, Citrus Lemon 10% ₹56.64, Lavender 6% ₹62.65. The per-kilo order (lemon, mint, lavender) becomes mint, lemon, lavender.
Pack size: check every ladder. Lavender 100 g to 1 kg saves ₹2.86 a candle at 8% (₹6,864.00 a year at 200 a month, worked example); Woody Oud's 1 kg saves nothing over 100 g.
Price per candle, not per kilo Fragrance cost in a 200 g candle (load as % of total weight). Rows in order of price per kilo; darker = dearer per candle. CSI live prices, 4 October 2026. Outlined: worked-example approved loads (your test decides yours). at the 1 kg price 6% 8% 10% 8% from 15 g Citrus Lemon ₹2,832.00/kg · ₹2.83/g ₹33.98 ₹45.31 ₹56.64 ₹86.85 Eucalyptus Spearmint ₹3,068.00/kg · ₹3.07/g ₹36.82 ₹49.09 ₹61.36 ₹73.00 Roasted Coffee ₹3,738.00/kg · ₹3.74/g ₹44.86 ₹59.81 ₹74.76 ₹99.43 Jasmine ₹3,923.00/kg · ₹3.92/g ₹47.08 ₹62.77 ₹78.46 ₹109.87 Woody Oud ₹4,531.20/kg · ₹4.53/g ₹54.37 ₹72.50 ₹90.62 ₹99.43 Lavender ₹5,221.00/kg · ₹5.22/g ₹62.65 ₹83.54 ₹104.42 ₹112.02 Dark Vanilla ₹7,646.00/kg · ₹7.65/g ₹91.75 ₹122.34 ₹152.92 ₹138.67 Read across a row: two load points of Lavender cost ₹20.88 a candle. Read the outlines: at approved loads the per-kilo order breaks. Read the last column: a 15 g bottle can cost more than the oil choice.
Each row is a CSI oil, cheapest per kilo at the top; each cell is fragrance cost in a 200 g candle. Darker cells cost more. The per-kilo order holds down each 1 kg column, but not across loads: Dark Vanilla at 6% (₹91.75) is dearer than Citrus Lemon at 10%, and the 15 g column shows a small bottle adding more than many oil swaps save. Outlined cells are worked-example approved loads, not CSI claims. Prices live on 4 October 2026.
Straight answer
How do I compare fragrance oils by cost per finished candle rather than simply comparing price per kilogram?
Convert every oil to rupees per candle before you compare. Fragrance cost per candle = candle grams × load × price per gram, where the price per gram is what you pay at the pack you actually buy and the load is the lowest load your own blind, full-life burn test approved for that oil. A 200 g candle at 8% (load as a share of total weight) holds 16 g of oil: at CSI's 1 kg prices that is ₹45.31 for Citrus Lemon, ₹83.54 for Lavender and ₹122.34 for Dark Vanilla. Two things then decide the ranking more than the per-kilo price does. First, load: an oil approved at 8% can beat a cheaper oil that needs 10%, as Eucalyptus Spearmint (₹49.09) does against Citrus Lemon (₹56.64) in our worked example. Second, pack size: buying 15 g bottles can cost more than the gap between two oils (16 g of Citrus Lemon is ₹86.85 from 15 g against ₹45.31 from 1 kg). For a full formulation cost, add the wax that fills the rest of the candle. Log each oil as one row with its pack, price date and the test that approved its load, and compare only oils that could fill the same slot in your range.
One line: grams at your approved load × ₹ per gram at your pack = the only fragrance price worth comparing.
Building the table for your own oils? A ladder of three candles each at 6, 8 and 10% in a 200 g candle uses 144 g of one oil: two 100 g bottles plus a 50 g leaves 34 g spare. Citrus Lemon: ₹770.00; Eucalyptus Spearmint: ₹920.40; Lavender: ₹1,350.00. All sizes in stock on 4 October 2026.

Where fragrance sits in a real candle cost

Before you compare oils, know how big the fragrance line is.

A worked 200 g candle, so the comparison has a home: CSI Lavender at 8% bought as 100 g bottles, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, one Eco C2 wick, and your own jar and box (worked examples; use your own). The second set of columns shows the same candle with the oil bought as a 1 kg pack, nothing else changed.

Fragrance is about a third of this candle and wax about two-fifths. The pack change alone saves ₹2.86 a candle: at 200 candles a month (worked example) that is ₹572.00 a month, ₹6,864.00 a year. A kilo of Lavender makes 62 candles at 16 g; at 200 a month you use 3,200 g a month, so you would be reordering kilo packs several times a month. Here the bigger pack is a sensible buy. It is not a large one, and on this oil the load is the far bigger lever: if your test approved 6% instead of 8%, you would save ₹20.88 of oil a candle, less ₹2.40 for the wax that replaces it, ₹18.48 net, ₹44,352.00 a year. That is the order of attack this cluster's hub sets out in the 35%-fragrance decision tree: pack, then load, then oil.

Why rupees, not percentages
Fragrance at 31% of COGS tells you where to look; it does not tell you what a change is worth. A table in rupees per candle lets you multiply by volume and compare a pack change, a load change and an oil change on the same scale. Every figure in this guide is in rupees for that reason.

The reusable table: seven oils, three loads, two sizes

One table, filled once, answers most "which oil is cheaper" questions before they are asked.

Seven CSI candle oils, chosen to span the price list from the cheapest kilo to a premium gourmand, priced at the 1 kg per-gram rate, at 6%, 8% and 10% of total candle weight. Each oil's page states a candle range or maximum of 10%, so all three rungs sit inside the oil page's stated limit; check your wax's ceiling too. Use the table as a planning grid, then overwrite the column your test approves.

Lavender ₹5.22 ₹46.99 ₹62.65 ₹78.31
Dark Vanilla ₹7.65 ₹68.81 ₹91.75 ₹114.69

Three readings are worth making every time. Across a row, every two points of load is a fixed rupee step: ₹11.33 a 200 g candle for Citrus Lemon, ₹20.88 for Lavender, ₹30.58 for Dark Vanilla. The dearer the oil, the more a load test is worth. Down a column, the per-kilo order holds: at the same load, cheaper per kilo is cheaper per candle. Across columns, it breaks: Dark Vanilla at 6% is ₹35.11 dearer than Citrus Lemon at 10%, but Eucalyptus Spearmint at 10% is ₹1.29 cheaper than Lavender at 6%. Price per kilo only ranks oils correctly if they need the same load, and you do not know that until you test.

Mistake: filling the table with each oil page's top figure ("up to 10%") and comparing those. Why it fails: a stated maximum is a ceiling, not a recommendation, and it is the same 10% for all seven oils here, so you are just ranking per-kilo prices again. Fix: plan on the 8% column, then replace it oil by oil with the load your test approves. The science of finding that load is the lowest effective load guide; the formulation series' own version of this question, with the throw test behind it, is comparing oils by cost per finished candle.

Pack size: the lever people forget

The same oil can cost twice as much per candle depending on the bottle you buy.

On each of these seven oils the per-gram price falls more from 15 g to 100 g than from 100 g to 1 kg. A small maker comparing oils in sample bottles is mostly comparing bottle sizes. Here is the same 16 g (a 200 g candle at 8%) priced at three pack sizes:

Dark Vanilla ₹8.67 ₹7.90 ₹7.65 ₹138.67 ₹126.40 ₹122.34 ₹4.06

The 15 g column is where the money hides: 16 g of Citrus Lemon from 15 g bottles is ₹41.54 dearer than from a 1 kg pack, more than the gap between 16 of the 21 pairs of these seven oils at 8%. Citrus Lemon is 48% cheaper per gram at 1 kg than at 15 g; Lavender 25%. The 100 g-to-1 kg column is smaller and uneven: from ₹7.55 a candle on Eucalyptus Spearmint down to nothing on Woody Oud.

Argued against our own interest: the 1 kg is not automatically the saving. Woody Oud costs ₹4.53 a gram at 100 g, 500 g and 1 kg alike. Lavender's 50 g and 100 g are both ₹5.40 a gram. Jasmine's 1 kg costs ₹1.00 more than two 500 g packs. Across our list, of the 78 oils we sell in both 500 g and 1 kg, the 1 kg equals two 500 g on 24 and costs more on 20. Check the ladder before you buy big, and never buy a kilo of an oil whose load you have not tested: a kilo you do not use is the dearest oil of all. How many kilos a month justify a bulk order is the 5 kg bulk question; whether to consolidate 20 oils into fewer, bigger packs is the consolidation post.

Effective cost: only at the load your test approves

An oil's effective cost does not exist until a burn test gives it a load.

Suppose you are choosing an oil for one place in your range, a fresh, clean scent, and you test three CSI oils in the same 200 g candle, wax, jar and wick. In this worked example (hypothetical results, not CSI claims) your blind panel approves Citrus Lemon at 10%, Eucalyptus Spearmint at 8% and Lavender at 6%. Read the outlined cells in the diagram:

Effective cost · three oils at their approved loads · 200 g candle
Approved loads: worked examples · 1 kg prices · formulation cost adds Chunks wax for the rest of the candle · net-of-wax = (oil ₹/g − wax ₹/g) × grams
Oil Rank per kilo Approved load Fragrance per candle Oil + wax Net of wax Rank per candle
Citrus Lemon 1 (₹2,832.00) 10% (20 g) ₹56.64 ₹164.62 ₹44.64 2
Eucalyptus Spearmint 2 (₹3,068.00) 8% (16 g) ₹49.09 ₹159.47 ₹39.49 1
Lavender 3 (₹5,221.00) 6% (12 g) ₹62.65 ₹175.43 ₹55.45 3

The cheapest oil per kilo comes second: Eucalyptus Spearmint is ₹7.55 a candle cheaper than Citrus Lemon, worth ₹18,120.00 a year at 200 candles a month. Lavender stays dearest even with the lowest approved load, by ₹13.56 against the mint and ₹6.01 against the lemon, because its per-kilo price is too far above the others for a 6% approval to close. Adding the wax changes the size of the gaps, not the order. In a 150 g candle the same approvals give ₹42.48, ₹36.82 and ₹46.99: same order. When two oils' effective costs land within a rupee or two of each other, the wax term can decide the winner; the worked case of exactly that is the ₹4,500 at 6% against ₹2,500 at 10% sum.

Two cautions keep this honest. The three oils are different scents, so the cheapest is only the answer if any of them would do for your customers; if your range needs lavender, the comparison that matters is between lavenders. And an approved load is only as good as the test behind it: three candles per rung, full burns, blind judging. A load "approved" on one evening's sniff is a guess with a number on it.

Mistake: comparing your current oil's approved load with a new oil's suggested load. Why it fails: one number is a test result and the other is a hope. The new oil looks cheaper on paper and is re-priced upward after it needs more. Fix: put both oils through the same ladder in the same week, or compare at the same load until you have. Comparing suppliers rather than catalogue oils adds lines for rejects, minimums and documents: effective formulation cost at supplier level.

How to log it so the numbers stay true

A comparison is only as current as the last price and the last test in it.

Keep one log, one row per oil, and let a spreadsheet do the arithmetic. The columns below are the minimum; the example rows use CSI prices from 4 October 2026 and worked-example loads.

Template · fragrance cost-per-candle log
Example rows: CSI live prices · loads are worked examples · formulas: ₹/g = price ÷ grams; g per candle = candle g × load; ₹ per candle = g × ₹/g

1
Price the pack you actually buyWrite down pack size, price paid and grams, and divide: ₹ per gram, two decimals. Add freight per gram if it is charged separately. Re-do this line every time you change pack size or the price changes.
2
Enter the approved load, not the bottle's rangeThe load column holds the lowest load your blind, full-life burn test passed, in your wax, jar and wick. Until a test exists, leave it blank and fill in the 6/8/10% columns for planning only.
3
Convert to grams per candleCandle grams × approved load (as a share of total weight). 200 g × 8% = 16 g. If you work on wax weight, convert first.
4
Multiply outGrams × ₹ per gram = fragrance ₹ per candle. This is the number you compare across oils, never the per-kilo price.
5
Add the wax the load leaves room forFor a like-for-like formulation cost, add (candle grams − oil grams) × wax ₹ per gram, or use the short form (oil ₹/g − wax ₹/g) × oil grams. Same jar, same fill line, for every oil.
6
Stamp it with a date and a test referenceEach row carries the test batch that approved the load and the price date. A load approved in winter can be re-checked before summer production; a price can change; a stale row misleads.
7
Rank inside a scent slot, then multiply by volumeCompare oils that could fill the same place in your range. The gap × candles a month × 12 is what the choice is worth a year.

The test reference is the column most logs leave out and most mistakes come from. It ties the load to a batch sheet: wax lot, oil lot, wick, jar, pour and cure dates, burn results. When a price changes, update one cell; when a test changes a load, update one cell; everything downstream recalculates. When the price of an oil you already use goes up, the log tells you in seconds what it does to COGS, which is the fragrance price-rise post's first step.

The decision rule, and the test gate

Compare inside a scent slot, at approved loads, in rupees a year.

With the log filled, the rule is short. One: compare only oils that could fill the same slot. Two: rank them on ₹ per candle at approved loads, at the pack you would actually buy. Three: multiply the gap by candles a month × 12. Four: act when that annual figure clearly exceeds the cost of the test and any change you must make (labels, recipe cards, the old oil left on the shelf); a payback inside about six months is a sensible bar (judgement). The pack-size change on Lavender above (₹6,864.00 a year, no test needed, same oil) clears it immediately. An oil change needs the full gate.

What a three-oil comparison costs to run · 200 g candles
Three 9-candle ladders (6/8/10% × 3 candles) · two 100 g + one 50 g bottle per oil · Chunks wax · your jars at ₹55.00 (worked) · two C2 20-packs
Line Quantity ₹
Citrus Lemon, Eucalyptus Spearmint, Lavender 250 g each (144 g used each) ₹770.00 + ₹920.40 + ₹1,350.00
Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 1,656 g per ladder × 3 ₹993.43 per ladder
Jars and wicks 27 jars, 27 of 40 C2 wicks ₹1,485.00 + ₹377.60
Materials for the comparison 27 candles ₹7,883.29

Set that against the gap you are chasing: the mint-over-lemon difference of ₹7.55 a candle is ₹18,120.00 a year at 200 a month, so the comparison repays its materials within the year at that volume and well inside it at higher volumes. At 50 candles a month it may not, and the honest answer is to keep the oil you have. Which percentages to put on the ladder, and how many candles per rung, is the lower-load test design; what to retest when the oil itself changes is the fragrance-change retest list; and how to test cost-down alternatives without risking a bestseller is the 10% cost-reduction test plan.

Argued against our own interest, again: if your log shows the oil you already use, at the pack you already buy, within a rupee of the best alternative, stop. A rupee a candle does not pay for a retest, new labels and the risk of a customer noticing, and that holds whether the alternative is ours or anyone else's.

Citrus Lemon Fragrance Oil
At ₹2,832.00 a kilo it is the cheapest 1 kg of the 101 oils CSI sells in a 1 kg pack, and the steepest ladder of the seven here: 48% cheaper per gram at 1 kg than at 15 g. The page describes "zesty lemon and lime top notes, bright grapefruit and orange heart, and a tangy mandarin finish" and states "candles (6-10%)". Limitation: cheapest per kilo is not cheapest per candle if your test needs the top of its range; in our worked flip it loses to Eucalyptus Spearmint at 8%.

Eucalyptus Spearmint Fragrance Oil
₹3,068.00 a kilo; the page describes it as "combining crisp eucalyptus with cool spearmint", states "Recommended fragrance load up to 10% for soy wax, up to 6% for paraffin" and its page says "No vanillin - zero risk of discoloration" (vanillin is one cause of discolouration, not the only one: test anyway). Its 1 kg is ₹236.00 cheaper than two 500 g packs, the biggest 1 kg step of the seven. Limitation: the 8% approval in our flip is a worked example, not a CSI claim; mint reads differently from lemon, so this is a range choice as much as a cost one.

₹5,221.00 a kilo; the page describes "fresh lavender top notes, herbal green mid notes, and soft musk base" and states "Recommended fragrance load 6-10% for candles". Its ladder has a flat step that catches people out: 50 g and 100 g are both ₹5.40 a gram, so the 100 g bottle saves nothing over two 50 g. From 100 g to 1 kg it falls only to ₹5.22. Argued against our own interest: on this oil the load is a far bigger lever than the pack; test 6% before you buy a kilo for a ₹2.86 saving.

Dark Vanilla Fragrance
₹7,646.00 a kilo, 2.70 times Citrus Lemon. The page describes "rich vanilla and spice opening into deep caramel and cream, settling into dark amber and warm musk", states "candles (6-10%)", and notes "Vanillin present - note for light-coloured wax". It is here to show the width of the table: even at 6% it costs ₹91.75 a 200 g candle, more than Citrus Lemon at 10%. Limitation: vanilla-rich oils commonly need a wick check and can discolour light wax; test in your wax.

Luxury Soy Wax Chunks for Jar / Container Candles
Every gram of oil a lower load saves becomes a gram of wax, so the wax price belongs in the comparison. The page states "up to 13% fragrance load capacity", enough room for any rung of a 6/8/10% ladder. Argued against our own interest: the 10 kg bag at ₹5,999.00 is ₹9.00 dearer than ten 1 kg bags, and the 500 g is the cheapest per gram. Do not buy a bigger bag for a discount; it is not there.
Size Price Per gram Wax for a 200 g candle at 8% (184 g)
500 g ₹299.00 ₹0.60 ₹110.03

Christmas is 25 December 2026, 82 days from our 4 October 2026 price check. That is time to ladder two or three oils, cure, burn them down and still buy production packs for December. Test in 100 g bottles now; buy 1 kg only of the oil and load that pass. When they do, send us the list and we will quote with a GST invoice and a dispatch date.

The CSI principle
Grams at your approved load, times rupees per gram at your pack: compare nothing else.
Price per kilo ranks oils correctly only when they need the same load and come in the same bottle. That is rarely true, and you only know after a test.
"A cheaper kilo is a promise. A cheaper candle is a test result."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the oils and wax in these tables and does not sell finished candles. This page still points out that our cheapest kilo loses in the worked comparison, that Woody Oud's 1 kg and Lavender's 100 g save nothing per gram over smaller sizes, that our 10 kg wax bag costs more than ten 1 kg bags, and that a rupee a candle is not worth switching for.

Every CSI price was checked on the live store on 4 October 2026, and every size of every oil in the tables was in stock on that date. Product wording is quoted from the pages; where a page is silent in the text we captured, we say so.

The approved loads (Citrus Lemon 10%, Eucalyptus Spearmint 8%, Lavender 6%), the 200 g candle, the jar (₹55.00), box and label (₹14.00) and 200 candles a month are labelled worked examples; which load passes is your burn test's answer, not ours. This is practical business judgement, not financial advice. For bulk pricing, GST invoicing, and MSDS and IFRA documentation on request, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate fragrance oil cost per candle?
Candle grams × load × price per gram. A 200 g candle at 8% holds 16 g; at ₹5.22 a gram (CSI Lavender, 1 kg) that is ₹83.54. Use the price per gram of the pack you buy and the load your test approved.
Is the cheapest fragrance oil per kg the cheapest per candle?
Only if it needs the same load. In a worked test, Citrus Lemon (₹2,832.00/kg) approved at 10% costs ₹56.64 a 200 g candle, while Eucalyptus Spearmint (₹3,068.00/kg) approved at 8% costs ₹49.09.
How much fragrance oil is in a 200 g candle at 8%?
16 g of oil and 184 g of wax, with load as a share of total candle weight. At 6% it is 12 g; at 10%, 20 g. For a 150 g candle: 9 g, 12 g and 15 g.
Is buying fragrance oil in 1 kg cheaper than 100 g?
Often, but not always. Citrus Lemon falls from ₹3.00 to ₹2.83 a gram; Woody Oud stays at ₹4.53 from 100 g to 1 kg. On 20 of the 78 CSI oils sold in both 500 g and 1 kg, the 1 kg costs more than two 500 g packs. Check each oil.
Should I include wax when comparing fragrance oil costs?
Yes, for a full formulation cost. Every gram of oil a lower load saves becomes a gram of wax, so add (candle grams − oil grams) × wax price per gram, or use (oil ₹/g − wax ₹/g) × oil grams.
What should a fragrance cost log include?
Oil, pack bought, price paid, ₹ per gram, approved load with the test reference, candle size, grams and ₹ per candle, and the price date. Update one cell when a price or a load changes.
Cost per candle, not per kilo
Fill the table with your oils, overwrite the loads with your test results, and compare inside each scent slot.
Start with the pack you buy (no test needed), then the load, then the oil. Send us your candle size and oil list on WhatsApp and we will confirm current prices per size for your log.

About this guide: part of CSI's cluster on fragrance oil costing too much (6021–6040) in the series on candle cost reduction and raw-material optimisation. It owns the cost-per-finished-candle method: the formula, a reusable table across seven CSI oils at 6/8/10% for 150 g and 200 g candles, the pack-size effect from 15 g to 1 kg, effective cost at approved loads, and a logging template.

Customer reviews: The six reviews at the top of this page are genuine, published Judge.me reviews left by CSI customers on the product pages named on each card — Citrus Lemon Fragrance Oil, Dark Vanilla Fragrance, Jasmine Fragrance Oil, Lavender Fragrance Oil, Roasted Coffee Fragrance. They are general product reviews, not assessments of the cost-reduction advice on this page. Names, star ratings, dates and products are as recorded by Judge.me and wording is unedited. "Verified buyer" appears only on reviews Judge.me recorded as verified — Priyanka Purohit, Anonymous, Tina Raha, Avanthi Cheeli. Non-price figures: load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g at 8% = 16 g oil + 184 g wax). Approved loads (Citrus Lemon 10%, Eucalyptus Spearmint 8%, Lavender 6%, Lavender 8% current) are worked-example test results, not CSI performance claims. The jar (₹55.00), box and label (₹14.00), 200 candles a month and the three-ladder comparison are worked examples. Oil pages' candle wording as quoted (each of the seven states a candle range or maximum of 10%); wax ceiling as the Chunks page states it (up to 13%): formulation limits, not regulatory ones. Costs are materials only and exclude labour, freight, GST and marketing. Christmas 25 December 2026 is a calendar fact.
