Correct purchase · two-combo scorecard
Stability and summer resistance are gates, not points. Only combinations that pass both get scored on throw and burn, and only then does cost per good candle decide.
₹273.10
cost per good candle for the dearer combination, below the cheaper one's ₹281.78 (example reject rates)
Quick answers — read this first
Should I add up scores for all five criteria? No. Stability and summer resistance are pass or fail. A combination that sweats cannot be rescued by good throw or low cost.

How do I score hot throw fairly? Same burn time, similar closed rooms, more than one person rating blind on a fixed scale.

What is cost per finished candle? Wax, oil, jar and wick per candle, excluding packaging, labels, labour, shipping and GST, divided by the share of candles that pass QC.

Where does the reject rate come from? Your own QC log from the trial and pilot. Do not borrow a figure; measure it.
The short answer
Method: Gate on stability and summer heat, score hot throw and burn quality, then compare cost per good candle using your own reject rates.
Worked example: CSI 464 with Lavender at 8% costs ₹253.60 per candle; Chunks with Lavender at 7% and a C2 wick costs ₹264.91.
Reject effect: At example reject rates of 10% and 3%, cost per good candle becomes ₹281.78 and ₹273.10.
Cost per candle vs cost per good candle (example reject rates 10% and 3%)A per candle₹254A per good candle₹282B per candle₹265B per good candle₹273
Combination B costs more to make and less to sell, because fewer of its candles fail QC in the example.
Straight answer
How Do I Compare Two Wax-Fragrance Combinations Using Stability, Hot Throw, Burn Quality, Summer Resistance and Cost per Finished Candle?
Compare them in three stages. Gate both combinations on stability (dry through your observation schedule) and summer resistance (dry after your own warm-room cycles); a fail on either removes it. Score the survivors on hot throw and burn quality using the same rooms, times and raters. Then cost each per good candle: materials ÷ (1 − your reject rate). In the worked example, CSI 464 with Lavender at 8% costs ₹253.60 per candle and Chunks with Lavender at 7% on a C2 wick ₹264.91. With example reject rates of 10% and 3%, the cost per good candle reverses: ₹281.78 against ₹273.10. The dearer candle on paper is the cheaper one to sell.
One line: gate on stability and heat, score throw and burn, then let cost per good candle, not cost per candle, settle it.
Luxury Soy Wax Chunks states a maximum of 13% of wax weight (11.50% of total); in this example it carries Lavender at only 7%, well inside that ceiling.

Five criteria, three stages

A candle that sweats does not earn points for smelling lovely.

When you have two candidate formulas, each a wax, an oil, a load, a wick and a jar, it is tempting to build a weighted scorecard: so many points for stability, so many for hot throw, and so on, then add them up. That method has a flaw for sweating problems. It lets a combination that fails stability win on throw and price. A candle that sweats in the warehouse is not for dispatch however well it scores elsewhere.

So split the five criteria by what they are. Stability and summer resistance are gates: pass or fail. Hot throw and burn quality are scores: better or worse, compared among survivors. Cost per finished candle is the decider, and it is only meaningful once it includes the candles each combination loses to QC.

The two example combinations

Both use Lavender, whose page states a candle load of 6–10% and rates it 'Strong' (the page's own rating, not a measurement). Both are 200 g candles in a matte 200 ml jar.

Combination A: CSI 464 with Lavender at 8% and an Eco C1 wick. Per candle: 184 × ₹0.5074 = ₹93.36 of wax, 16 × ₹5.221 = ₹83.54 of oil, the jar ₹70.80 and wick ₹5.90, giving ₹93.36 + ₹83.54 + ₹70.80 + ₹5.90 = ₹253.60.

Combination B: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks with Lavender at 7% and an Eco C2 wick. Per candle: 186 × ₹0.5999 = ₹111.58 of wax, 14 × ₹5.221 = ₹73.09 of oil, the jar ₹70.80 and wick ₹9.44, giving ₹111.58 + ₹73.09 + ₹70.80 + ₹9.44 = ₹264.91. Both totals exclude packaging, labels, labour, shipping and GST.

On the load bases: 8% of total is 16 ÷ 184 = 8.70% of wax weight, inside CSI 464's 'up to 10%'. 7% of total is 14 ÷ 186 = 7.53% of wax weight, well inside Chunks' 'maximum 13% of wax weight'. Being inside a stated maximum does not prove stability; that is what the gate is for.

Stage one: the gates

Stability gate. Pour at least six candles of each, cure for the stated 48–72 hours, and observe on a suggested schedule of day 1, 3, 7 and 14 with photographs and a tissue blot. Pass means no oil film or droplets on any candle by the last check.

Summer gate. Take two of each through your own warm-room cycles at a condition you choose to represent your worst storage or courier exposure, in a supervised cabinet or room and never a kitchen oven. CSI publishes no heat-resistance figure for either wax, so this gate is entirely your own evidence. Pass means no oil after the cycles, judged at room temperature.

Run both gates on candles poured in the same session, from the same oil bottle, with fragrance-addition and pour temperatures measured by thermometer and matched. If A is poured on a cool morning and B on a hot afternoon, the gates compare days, not formulas. Keep the candles side by side through the whole observation period, in the same room, so they see the same temperature swings.

If only one passes both gates. The decision is made. Do not keep scoring the failed combination to see whether it would have won on cost. It cannot be sold.

Stage two: the scorecard

Two-combination scorecard
Example results for illustration; record your own
Criterion Type How it is measured A: CSI 464, 8%, C1 B: Chunks, 7%, C2
Stability gate day 1, 3, 7, 14 observation and blot pass pass
Summer resistance gate your own warm-room cycles pass, light film on 1 of 2 pass
Hot throw score 1–5 blind rating, closed room, same burn time 4 4
Burn quality score 1–5 melt pool, flame, soot, burn to end 3: slow pool in hour 2 4
Materials per candle cost wax + oil + jar + wick ₹253.60 ₹264.91
Reject rate in pilot your log QC fails ÷ candles poured 10% (example) 3% (example)
Cost per good candle decider materials ÷ (1 − reject rate) ₹281.78 ₹273.10

Look at the summer row for A in the example: one of two candles showed a light film after cycling. Strictly, that is a fail, and A should leave the comparison. It is kept in the table here to show how the cost stage works, and because many makers would be tempted to call it a borderline pass. If your own result looks like this, repeat the summer gate with more candles before you score anything.

Score throw and burn in the same sessions for both combinations. For throw, burn each candle for the same time, move it to a closed room of similar size, and have at least two people rate it on a fixed 1–5 scale without knowing which is which. For burn quality, record melt-pool progress at each hour, flame steadiness, soot on the glass and how the candle finishes at the bottom. Burn to the end at least three candles of each, and never leave them unattended.

If the scores tie, as throw does in the example, do not invent a tiebreaker from the bottle smell. A tie means the customer will not notice the difference, which pushes the decision onto burn quality and cost. Record the raters' notes as well as the numbers; a comment such as 'softer but rounder' can matter more for a scent than a one-point difference. If one combination wins clearly on throw but loses on burn, look at the wick before the formula: a different wick may fix the burn without losing the throw, and that is a third combination worth a short test rather than a reason to accept a flawed one.

Stage three: cost per good candle

The materials line is what most makers compare, and on that line A wins by ₹264.91 − ₹253.60 = ₹11.31 per candle. But candles that fail QC cost the same to make and earn nothing. Divide by the share that pass. With an example reject rate of 10% for A, from frosting, a few late surface films and some uneven burns in the pilot, A costs ₹253.60 ÷ 0.90 = ₹281.78 per good candle. With an example 3% for B, it costs ₹264.91 ÷ 0.97 = ₹273.10.

Across a run of an example 500 good candles, that is 500 × ₹281.78 = ₹140,890.00 for A and 500 × ₹273.10 = ₹136,550.00 for B, a difference of ₹4,340.00 in B's favour, before counting the labour of making the extra A candles that fail. The reject rates are illustrations; yours come from your own trial and pilot QC log, counting every candle you would not ship.

Lower load, lower oil spend
Part of B's advantage is buying less oil: 14 g instead of 16 g per candle saves ₹83.54 − ₹73.09 = ₹10.45 per candle. The lower load, held cleanly by a wax with more headroom, also throws as well in the example. Use less of our oil when it does the job.

Record the winner as one formula

1
Write the whole combinationWax, oil, load on a stated basis, wick, jar, process temperatures and cure.
2
Attach the evidenceGate results, scorecard, reject log and the cost per good candle.
3
Retire the loser for this scentMark it not approved so nobody reverts to it for a cheaper batch.
4
Order to the validated runWax, oil, wicks and jars for the planned quantity, with a reserve for lot checks.

If neither combination passes both gates, neither goes on the sheet. Go back to the load ladder or a third wax rather than choosing the less bad of two sweating candles. And when the winner goes into production, keep logging rejects: the reject rate you measured in a pilot is an estimate, and the first few production runs will tell you whether the cost per good candle you decided on is the one you are actually achieving.

Argue against interest
The cheaper formula is the one that fails less, not the one that costs less to pour.
Gate on stability and heat, then divide by good candles. In the example, using less oil in a wax with more headroom wins on both stability and cost.
Cost per candle flatters the formula that fails. Cost per good candle does not.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general formulation practice from what CSI's own product pages state, converts the pages' wax-weight loads to the total-weight basis used here, says plainly where CSI publishes no figure (wax heat resistance, survival temperatures, oil composition beyond the page), and labels every load step, test temperature, observation day or reject rate as a starting point for your own validation.

Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as the temperature at which a wax starts to release oil — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Frequently asked questions

how do I compare two candle formulas
Gate both on stability and summer heat; remove any that fail. Score survivors on hot throw and burn quality using the same method. Then compare cost per good candle: materials divided by one minus your measured reject rate.
how do I calculate cost per good candle
Add wax, oil, jar and wick per candle, then divide by the share that pass QC. At ₹264.91 per candle and a 3% reject rate, ₹264.91 ÷ 0.97 = ₹273.10. Exclude packaging, labour, shipping and GST, or add them separately.
should stability be part of a weighted candle scorecard
No. Treat it as pass or fail. A weighted score lets a combination that sweats win on throw or price, and a candle that sweats cannot be sold however it scores elsewhere.
is a cheaper wax always cheaper per candle
Not once rejects are counted. In the example the cheaper combination costs ₹253.60 per candle but ₹281.78 per good candle at a 10% reject rate, more than the dearer combination at 3%.
how many candles do I need to compare two wax and fragrance combinations
A suggested starting point is six per combination for stability, two of those for warm-room cycles, and at least three burned to the end. Increase the count before trusting a borderline result.
where do I get a reject rate for my candles
From your own QC log. Count every candle from the trial and pilot that you would not ship, for any reason, and divide by candles poured. Do not use someone else's figure.
