Product Brief · Cluster Capstone
A product idea has every decision in it and none of the numbers. Write one sheet in eight stages, tag every figure as published, weighed, tested or assumed, and buy in production quantity only what no test can still change.
₹1,885.00
the test stage for a 120-tin product idea — 8 tins, 2 loads, 2 wick candidates — bought before the ₹18,662.00 production half · CSI listed prices, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
What are the stages? Brief → spec → per-unit BOM → test plan → allowance stack → round to packs → buy-now/after split → order.

What makes it reliable? Tag every number: Published, Weighed, Tested or Assumed. Untested Ts and As are not bought deep.

What does the example need? 120 × 85 g tins at 8%: 10,158 g of wax and 883 g of oil for production, after an 8-tin test.

What does it cost? ₹1,885.00 now for the test stage; ₹18,662.00 after it at 8% (₹20,594.00 at 10%).
The short answer
Answer: Write the brief and spec, split the unit weight into oil and wax, list what is unproven and test it, stack allowances once each, round to real packs, and buy production quantities only after the tests.
Why: A purchase made from the idea commits to a load, a wick and a fill nobody has proven. The sheet separates published and weighed facts from tested and assumed ones.
Method: Eight stages; P/W/T/A tags on every number; test plan sized to the unknowns; production half written now, placed after the tests.
From product idea to purchase order: eight stages, one sheet Worked example: 120 travel tins, 85 g published fill, Gilli Mitti (Patchouli), Luxury Soy Wax Chunks · every number tagged by where it came from 1 · BRIEF what, how many, for whom, by when 2 · SPEC container, weight, wax, oil, colour 3 · UNIT BOM oil = W × L wax = W − oil 4 · TEST PLAN what is unproven and how many 5 · STACK tests · rejects loss · breakage 6 · ROUND real in-stock CSI packs 7 · SPLIT buy now vs after tests 8 · ORDER CSI subtotal + example lines stage 4 (test plan) decides what stage 7 (split) holds back until the tests pass Tag every number on the sheet with its source: [P] Published — CSI product page or listing (85 g tin fill, 13% ceiling, prices) [W] Weighed — your scale (fills of unpublished jars, finished weights) [T] Tested — your burn or warmer test (wick, load, cure) [A] Assumed — labelled working figure until replaced (rejects, loss)
The eight stages in order, from the brief to the order. Stage 4 (the test plan) decides what stage 7 holds back until the tests pass. The key below shows the four source tags that go next to every number on the sheet; the worked example's 85 g fill is a published figure, its load and wick are tested ones.
Straight answer
How do I turn a new candle product idea into a complete BOM before buying any raw materials?
Write one sheet in eight stages — brief, spec, per-unit BOM, test plan, allowance stack, rounding to real packs, buy-now/buy-after split, order — and tag every number as published, weighed, tested or assumed. The per-unit BOM splits the finished weight (oil = W × L, wax = W − oil); the test plan lists what is unproven, usually load, wick and cure; allowances go in once each (tests, rejects, pour loss on wax and oil, breakage on glass); rounding uses real in-stock packs. Worked for 120 travel tins in the Golden Aluminium Tin (85 g published fill) with Chunks and Gilli Mitti: test 2 loads × 2 wick candidates × 2 tins first (₹1,885.00), then place the production half — 10,158 g of wax, 883 g of oil, tins, the winning wick — for ₹18,662.00 at 8% or ₹20,594.00 at 10%. Non-CSI items stay as labelled example lines.
One line: tag every number by its source, and buy deep only what no test can still change.
Before buying anything for a new candle, write one sheet: the brief, the spec, the per-unit BOM, the test plan, the allowance stack, the rounding to real packs, the buy-now/buy-after split and the priced order — with every number tagged as published, weighed, tested or assumed. Worked here for 120 travel tins in the Golden Aluminium Tin (85 g published fill): a ₹1,885.00 test stage, then a production order of ₹18,662.00 at 8% or ₹20,594.00 if the test picks 10%.

Why the BOM comes before the first purchase

Most first orders are bought from a picture of the finished candle. The sheet is what turns the picture into quantities.

A product idea — "a small patchouli travel candle in a gold tin" — contains almost every decision a purchase order needs, but none of the numbers. The usual sequence is to buy what looks right, pour, discover the wick or the load is wrong, buy again, and end up with half-bottles of the first attempt. A bill of materials written before the first purchase reverses that: it forces each decision into a number, says where the number came from, and separates what you know from what you still have to test. Only then does it become a shopping list.

This page is the capstone of the cluster: every sibling took one product brief — a bubble candle, a hundred sculptural shapes, wax melts, a three-size range, fifteen SKUs, a five-scent collection, ten standardised SKUs — and turned it into a list. Underneath, every one of them followed the same eight stages. Here they are as a template, with a fresh worked example so the numbers have somewhere to land.

The CSI principle
Every number on the sheet has a source: published, weighed, tested or assumed. Buy in production quantity only what is not still waiting for a test.
If you cannot say where a number came from, it is a guess. Guesses are fine — as long as they are labelled and replaced.

The eight stages

1
1 · Brief: what, how many, for whom, by whenOne paragraph. "120 travel tin candles, 85 g, patchouli, for a festive market, needed by early November." The count and the date are what turn a product into a purchase.
2
2 · Spec: container, finished weight, wax, oil, colourName each material. For the container, record its fill: published (only the 85 g tin and the 50 g velvet jar at CSI) or weighed (every other jar — fill one with water, convert, confirm with a wax pour).
3
3 · Per-unit BOM: split the weightOil = W × L; wax = W − oil. At 8% of 85 g: 6.80 g oil and 78.20 g wax. One container, one wick, one sticker per unit. Never treat the finished weight as all wax.
4
4 · Test plan: list what is unprovenUsually the wick, the load and the cure. Give each its candidates and a candle count. Anything on this list blocks a production purchase of the materials it could change.
5
5 · Allowance stack: tests, rejects, loss, breakage — once eachTests as whole units; rejects as ÷ (1 − r) on consumables; pour loss on wax and oil only; breakage on glass only. In that order, each once.
6
6 · Round to real packsCheapest in-stock CSI combination that covers each need. Show the leftover and what it is worth. Compute — some bigger packs are not cheaper per gram.
7
7 · Split: buy now versus buy after the testsThe test stage buys small. Production quantities of anything the test plan can change wait. Shared, unchanging items can be bought early.
8
8 · Order: CSI subtotal, then example linesCSI items with listed prices; non-CSI items (labels, boxes, lids not sold with the container, courier) as labelled examples outside the CSI subtotal.
Tag every number
Write P, W, T or A next to every figure on the sheet: Published (a CSI product page or listing), Weighed (your scale), Tested (your burn or warmer test), Assumed (a labelled working figure). When the sheet is finished, every A and every untested T is a line you should not buy deep yet.

The template, filled in for a travel tin

The worked example is deliberately small and deliberately precise. The Golden Aluminium Tin is one of only two CSI containers with a published fill — 85 g — so the finished weight is a P, not a W, and no test pour is needed to set it. The wax is Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, whose page states a 13% maximum load, leaving headroom to test 10%. The oil is Gilli Mitti (Patchouli), priced at ₹8.96 a gram from 50 g to 1 kg. Nothing on this page claims how it will throw; CSI publishes no throw data for any oil, which is why the load is a T.

Copy this sheet · P = published, W = weighed, T = tested, A = assumed · batch figures at 8% with tests, rejects and loss

Read the source column before anything else. Three lines are still T — the load, the wick and the throw — and two are A. That tells you exactly what the test stage has to settle and which purchases to hold. It also tells you what does not need testing: the tin's fill is published and the wax's ceiling is published, so the sheet does not waste test candles on them. For a jar with an unpublished fill, the weight line would be a W, and the first step would be a weighed pour.

The shortcut: buy from the brief. "120 tins of 85 g at 8% — 816 g of oil and 10,200 g of wax." The wax figure treats the whole 85 g as wax and the oil figure carries no tests, rejects or loss; and it commits to 8% and to a wick before either is tested. The oil alone would be 1 × 500 g + 3 × 100 g + 2 × 15 g for ₹7,448.00 of a scent you have not yet burned. Fix: stages 3 to 7, in order. The same discipline applies to a jar candle; only the weight line changes from P to W.

Stage 4: the test plan, and what it costs

The test plan is the part of the BOM that protects the rest of it.

Two things are unproven: the load and the wick. Two loads (8% and 10%, both inside Chunks' published 13%) × two wick candidates (Eco Thin C1 and Cotton Braided Ready Made) × two candles each = 8 test tins. CSI publishes no wick size for the tin, so both wicks are candidates, not recommendations. Cure all eight to the same labelled checkpoint — Chunks' page states at least 48 hours, ideally one to two weeks — and burn them in matched sets.

Wick Stickers every test wick 12 1 × 40 ₹100.00
Test stage total ₹1,885.00
Scale, thermometer, jug (if not owned) 1 each ₹1,239.00

Very little of this is wasted. The 12-tin pack leaves 4 tins for production; the Eco Thin C1 pack leaves 16 wicks, which carry into production if that candidate wins; the oil and wax leftovers (0.7 g and 350.3 g) are deducted from the production need below. The genuine sunk cost is the losing wick pack and eight tins of candles you will not sell. Size the test to the unknowns, not to a habit.

Stages 5 and 6: stack, then round

Production after the test · 120 tins · tests already bought · rejects 3% · pour loss 5% · no breakage (aluminium)
Allowance stack and rounding at both candidate loads
Line At 8% Buy (8%) Price At 10% Buy (10%) Price

Wax (minus test leftover) 9,807.7 g 2 × 5 kg ₹5,990.00 9,586.9 g 2 × 5 kg ₹5,990.00
Tins (minus test-pack spares) 120 10 × 12-pack ₹3,600.00 120 10 × 12-pack ₹3,600.00
Wicks (winner; Eco Thin C1 shown; test-pack spares deducted) 129 1 × 100-pack + 1 × 20-pack ₹708.00 129 1 × 100-pack + 1 × 20-pack ₹708.00
Wick stickers (test-sheet spares deducted) 129 3 × 40 ₹300.00 129 3 × 40 ₹300.00
Production order ₹18,662.00 ₹20,594.00

The difference between the two loads is ₹1,932.00 on this run, almost all of it oil — Gilli Mitti is a flat ₹8.96 a gram at every size from 50 g, so every point of load is ₹7.62 a tin. That is the number to weigh against the throw difference your test shows. Per tin, materials come to about ₹146.17 at 8% and ₹160.38 at 10% (tin ₹30.00, Eco Thin C1 ₹5.90, sticker ₹2.50), excluding labour, packaging, freight and GST.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. A full sheet before the first order means a small first order: ₹1,885.00 instead of a production-sized basket bought on a guess. And the oil in this example has no bulk step at all — ₹8.96 a gram from 50 g to 1 kg — so there is no reason to buy a kilo early; buy the 500 g and 100 g bottles that cover the run you have tested. If the 10% tins are not clearly better than the 8% tins on your sheet, choose 8% and buy less of our oil.

The order is in two halves on purpose. The test half is bought now and is small. The production half is written now — so you know the total commitment before you start — but placed only when the test candles have cured, burned and been scored. If the test changes the load, swap the 8% column for the 10% column; if it changes the wick, swap the wick line. Nothing else moves.

After the first order: from one BOM to a procurement system

Once a product has a proven BOM, it stops being a one-off sheet and becomes a line in a system. The next part of this series takes it there: turning a finalised formula into a 30-day purchase order, converting monthly sales into requirements, consolidating every SKU into one monthly order, and finally the full chain from product BOM to CSI purchase order. Every one of those starts from the sheet on this page.

Your idea uses a jar with no published fill? The only change to the sheet is the weight line: it becomes a W. Fill the jar with water to your line, weigh, multiply by a labelled 0.86–0.90, split at your load, and confirm with a weighed wax pour before stage 3. The Heart Cutout Velvet Jar (50 g wax capacity) is the other CSI container whose fill is published.
Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A supplier's shopping list is easy to pad. Every line on this page is computed from a per-unit quantity and an allowance you can see, rounded to the cheapest in-stock pack combination we list, with the leftover shown — including where a smaller or cheaper option means a smaller order from us.

Oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 4 October 2026. Soy-wax prices are CSI live pricing, re-checked 1 October 2026. Wick and jar prices were re-checked 4 October 2026. Grams, pack rounding, leftovers and ₹ totals are computed to two decimals so you can check them.

The 120-unit brief, the 8% and 10% loads, the 8-tin test plan, 3% rejects, 5% pour loss, five spare wicks and the example label, box, lid and courier figures are illustrative; the 85 g fill is CSI's published figure. They are labelled working assumptions, not standards, and every non-CSI line is an example you replace with your own quote. Frequently asked questions

What is a BOM for candles?
A bill of materials: every material per candle (wax, oil, wick, container, sticker, dye, packaging) with its quantity, multiplied up for the batch with allowances, then rounded to the packs you can buy.
How do I calculate raw materials for a new candle?
Fix the finished weight (published or weighed), split it at your load (oil = W × L, wax = the rest), add tests, rejects and pour loss once each, and round each material to real packs.
What should I test before buying candle supplies in bulk?
Whatever your BOM cannot prove on paper — usually the wick, the fragrance load and the cure. Buy those materials in production quantity only after the test candles pass.
How many test candles should I make for a new product?
Enough to compare each unknown side by side, with at least two candles per variant as a working practice. Two loads × two wicks × two candles = eight is a common small plan.
Which CSI candle containers have a known fill weight?
The Golden Aluminium Tin (85 g) and the Heart Cutout Velvet Jar (50 g wax capacity). For every other jar, weigh a water fill and confirm with a wax pour.
Should packaging be in my candle BOM?
Yes, as its own lines — labels, boxes, lids not sold with the container — but as example figures from your own quotes, kept separate from the raw-material subtotal.

Not published: wick size per container, throw for any oil, whether the tin ships with a lid. The brief, loads, test plan, 3% rejects, 5% pour loss, spare wicks, the 0.86–0.90 water-to-wax factor and every non-CSI figure are labelled illustrations.
