How Much Will the Raw Materials for 1,000 Candles Cost?
Aktie
What is in that total? Six lines, all priced from live CSI stock: wax ₹81,184.00, fragrance oil ₹47,136.00, wicks ₹6,195.00, wick stickers ₹2,800.00, care stickers ₹699.00 and vessels ₹97,232.00. Packaging, courier, labour and marketing are not in it — CSI does not sell them.
Which component costs the most? The vessel, in most builds. In the standard build the jars are 41.3% of the bill and the wax is 34.5%. The wick, which makers agonise over, is 2.6%.
Why is the total higher than price per kilo × quantity? Because you buy packs, not grams. At pure unit rates the standard build is ₹2,23,766.00; with a 5% wastage allowance on wax and oil, spares on wicks, breakage on jars and every pack rounded up, the invoice is ₹2,35,246.00 — ₹11,480.00 more, about 5.1%.
What a thousand candles means before it means anything in rupees
Any page that answers "what do 1,000 candles cost" without first saying what the candle is has given you a number you cannot use. A 70 g votive in a 40 ml glass and a 250 g three-wick jar with a metal lid are both "a candle", and they differ by a factor of five. So here is the specification every figure on this page is built on, stated once and held constant so that the comparisons mean something.
| Element | Specification | Why it is fixed here |
|---|---|---|
| Quantity | 1,000 finished candles | A typical single festive or corporate production run. |
| Fill | 150 g of wax per candle, 150 kg in total | The most common Indian container size; wax weight, not vessel capacity. |
| Fragrance load | 8% of wax weight, 12 g per candle, 12 kg in total | Inside the stated ceilings of every wax and oil named here; the lower of the two governs. |
| Wick | One cotton wick per candle, 1,050 ordered | Single-wick vessels; a 5% spares assumption. |
| Vessel | One per candle, 1,030 ordered | A 3% breakage-and-spoilage assumption. |
| Wastage on wax and oil | 5%, so 157.5 kg and 12.60 kg required | A stated assumption, not measured data. |
| Prices | Live CSI variant prices, September 2026, taxes included | Rounded up to whole packs, because that is what you buy. |
Three of those rows are assumptions rather than facts, and they are flagged as such wherever they appear: the 5% wastage on wax and oil, the 5% wick spares and the 3% vessel breakage. They are offered as starting figures for a maker who has never counted their own. After one run you will have real numbers, and yours should replace these. The rest — every rupee, every pack size, every per-gram rate — comes from live CSI product pages and can be checked in a browser while you read.
One more thing the specification does. Because the fill and the load are fixed, the wax and oil quantities are fixed too: 157.5 kg of wax and 12.60 kg of oil after the wastage allowance. Changing the vessel changes the fill, which changes both — which is why the vessel decision is not just a vessel decision. That is worth remembering when you look at the value build later and notice how much cheaper it is.
The standard build, line by line
This is the middle build: a soy candle a small Indian brand would be happy to sell at a gifting price point. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, whose page describes it as a single-pour container wax with a stated fragrance load of up to 10%. Roasted Coffee Fragrance Oil, whose page states 6–10% of total wax weight for soy — so 8% is inside both ceilings, and where they differ the lower one governs. An Eco Candle Wick Thin (C1), a wick sticker, a care sticker and a Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid, whose page gives a 150 g fill capacity and an 8 cm height.
| Line | Quantity ordered | Packs bought | Cost | Share of bill |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 160 kg (157.5 kg needed) | Sixteen 10 kg packs | ₹81,184.00 | 34.5% |
| Roasted Coffee Fragrance Oil | 12.60 kg (12 kg at 8%) | Twelve 1 kg + one 500 gm + one 100 gm | ₹47,136.00 | 20% |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) | 1,050 wicks | One 1000-pack + one 50-pack | ₹6,195.00 | 2.6% |
| Candle Wick Stickers | 1,120 stickers | 28 sheets of 40 | ₹2,800.00 | 1.2% |
| Candle Care Stickers Roll | 1,000 stickers | One roll of 1,000 | ₹699.00 | 0.3% |
| Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid | 1,030 jars | 103 packs of 10 | ₹97,232.00 | 41.3% |
| Materials from CSI | 1,000 candles | ₹2,35,246.00 | 100% | |
| Per candle | ₹235.25 | |||
| Your own costs | _____ | Not a CSI cost — see below |
Read the share column before the cost column. The vessel is 41.3% of the bill and the wax is 34.5%; together they are three-quarters of everything. Fragrance is 20%. The wick — the component that generates the most anxiety per rupee in this industry — is 2.6%, and all three sticker and finishing lines together are under 1.5%. A maker who spends a week comparing wax suppliers and picks a jar from a photograph has spent the week on the second-biggest line.
The same thousand candles, cheaper and dearer
Three specifications, all 1,000 candles at a 150 g fill with fragrance at 8% of wax weight, all priced with the same allowances and the same pack rounding. The value build uses the cheapest sensible soy, a keenly priced oil and a plain glass jar. The premium build uses a coconut-soy blend, a vanilla-family oil and a heavier vessel with a lid.
| Line | Value build | Standard build | Premium build |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wax |
Eco Soy CSI 400 ₹63,872.00 |
CSI 464 ₹81,184.00 |
Coconut Soy CSI 468 ₹1,01,920.00 |
| Fragrance oil, 12.60 kg |
Eucalyptus Spearmint ₹38,822.00 |
Roasted Coffee ₹47,136.00 |
Vanilla Bean ₹96,382.00 |
| Wicks, 1,050 | Thin (C1) ₹6,195.00 |
Thin (C1) ₹6,195.00 |
Thick (C2) ₹9,912.00 |
| Wick stickers | ₹2,800.00 | ₹2,800.00 | ₹2,800.00 |
| Care stickers | — | ₹699.00 | ₹699.00 |
| Vessel, 1,030 |
200ml Salsa jar ₹30,975.00 |
Clear glass, golden lid ₹97,232.00 |
Black glass, black lid ₹1,10,210.00 |
| Materials from CSI | ₹1,42,664.00 | ₹2,35,246.00 | ₹3,21,923.00 |
| Per candle | ₹142.66 | ₹235.25 | ₹321.92 |
| Your own costs | _____ | _____ | _____ |
The spread is ₹1,79,259.00 — the premium run costs more than twice the value run. Look at where it comes from. The vessel accounts for ₹79,235.00 of it and the fragrance for ₹49,246.00 between standard and premium alone. The wax contributes ₹38,048.00, and the wick — the difference between a C1 and a C2 across a thousand candles — contributes ₹3,717.00. If you need to take money out of a quotation, you now know which two lines to open first.
Each build carries a caveat that a costing table cannot show. Eco Soy CSI 400 is the cheapest soy here at ₹399.20 a kilo, but its page does not publish a fragrance ceiling — so before building a thousand candles on it, ask on WhatsApp what load it is formulated for. Vanilla Bean states 2.5% vanillin and the page notes potential discolouration, recommending testing with lighter waxes — cosmetic, but at a thousand units it is a consistency question. And the 200ml Salsa jar is a 200 ml vessel, so a 150 g fill leaves visible headspace; either accept it as a design choice or fill higher and re-do the wax arithmetic.
One honest point against our own interest. The value build is not a compromised candle — it is soy wax, a fragrance oil whose page states 0% vanillin and a flash point of 199°C, a cotton wick and real glass, for ₹142.66 a candle. Plenty of successful Indian brands sell exactly that. If your market is gifting volume rather than luxury retail, spending ₹92,582.00 more to reach the standard build should be a decision you can justify in the price you charge, not a default.
Why the invoice is bigger than the calculator says
Almost every cost-per-candle calculation online multiplies a per-kilo rate by a quantity. Do that for the standard build — 150 kg of wax at ₹507.40, 12 kg of oil at ₹3.74 a gram, 1,000 wicks at ₹5.90, 1,000 stickers at ₹2.50 and 1,000 jars at ₹94.40 — and you get ₹2,23,766.00, or ₹223.77 a candle. The actual order is ₹2,35,246.00. The difference is ₹11,480.00, about 5.1%, and it is made of four entirely predictable things.
| Step | What it adds | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Unit-rate total | ₹2,23,766.00 | Per-kilo, per-gram and per-unit rates × exact quantities. |
| Wastage on wax and oil | 5% assumption | Residue in the pitcher, overshoot on the scale, a re-poured batch. |
| Spares and breakage | 5% on wicks, 3% on vessels | Mis-stuck wicks, chipped rims, a jar poured wrong. |
| Pack rounding | Up to a whole pack on every line | 157.5 kg of wax is sixteen 10 kg packs, so you buy 160 kg. |
| Finishing line added | ₹699.00 | A care sticker on every candle — optional, but part of a real product. |
| What you actually pay | ₹2,35,246.00 | ₹235.25 a candle. |
The practical rule is short: quote from the invoice total, cost from the unit rate. Use the per-unit figures when you are comparing two waxes or two jars, because that is a fair comparison. Use the pack-rounded total when you are quoting a client or planning cash, because that is what leaves your account. A brand that quotes a 1,000-candle corporate order from the unit-rate number has given away ₹11,480.00 before it starts, and will not notice until the third order.
Leftovers are the other half of this. The standard build buys 160 kg of wax to use 157.5 kg, and 12.80 kg of oil in the five-scent version of this run to use 12.60 kg. That surplus is not waste — it is the first candles of the next batch, or the samples you send a gifting prospect. Log it, date it, and use it first. The only way leftovers become a real loss is by sitting open in a warm cupboard for a year.
Make one spreadsheet with a row per material and four columns: needed, allowance, packs, cost. Put the pack size and per-unit rate in a note beside each line. Then a 1,000-candle run, a 500-candle run and a 2,500-candle run are the same sheet with one cell changed, and you will never again quote a client from a number you worked out in your head at eleven at night. The pricing calculator guide covers the next step, turning the cost into a price.
Equipment: a CSI cost, but not a per-candle one
Tools are the one overhead CSI can actually price, because you buy them here — but they do not belong in the material total, and putting them there makes a first run look ruinous and every run after it look free. A working bench for a 1,000-candle run is a Mini Electric Wax Melter at ₹2,360.00, a Pen Thermometer at ₹354.00, a Steel Pouring Pitcher 600 ml at ₹708.00, a CSI Pro Mixer at ₹349.00, 75 Steel Wick Holders at ₹1,250.00 for 25 and a litre of Isopropyl Alcohol Spray at ₹520.00 — ₹8,041.00 together.
Spread that across the 1,000 candles of this run and it is ₹8.04 a candle; spread it across the three runs the same equipment will do next year and it is a third of that. Pick your own life for it and carry one line in the sheet. What you should not do is leave it out entirely, because the first candle you ever pour genuinely costs the whole bench.
At 160 kg of wax per run, throughput becomes a real question. A 1 litre melter is a bottleneck at that volume; the Electric Wax Melter (Imported) at ₹21,240.00 for the 10 kg capacity is the step up, and one reviewer who has used it describes 10 kg of wax melting in 20–30 minutes and calls it very cost effective. Whether that is worth ₹21,240.00 depends entirely on how many 1,000-candle runs a year you expect — a question about your order book, not about the equipment. If you are still testing whether the process suits you at all, a Scented Jar Candle Making Kit For Beginners at ₹555.78 is a far cheaper way to find out.
Colour is the other optional line. Candle Dye Liquid at ₹900.00 for 100 gm and Gold Mica at ₹1,119.82 for 100 gm are both in the catalogue, but the quantity depends on the shade you are aiming at rather than on a published percentage, so this page will not put a figure in your total. One reviewer describes the liquid dye as concentrated enough that a little gives a good pastel shade — the sensible approach is to measure what one test batch consumes and scale that, rather than guessing at a thousand candles.
Worked example: turning the total into an actual order
The last step matters more than it sounds. One reviewer, Manasa GN, writes that the products are great and of premium quality but that "the delivery charges are very high which is restricting me to purchase more" — a fair comment, and at this volume the answer is arithmetic rather than argument: a delivery charge spread across a 1,000-candle order is a fraction of what the same charge costs on a 60-candle order. Consolidate, ask for the quote, and put the number in your own worksheet, because CSI does not publish a delivery rate and this page will not invent one.
The half of the bill that is not on this page
₹2,35,246.00 is a complete answer to "what do the raw materials cost" and an incomplete answer to "what does the run cost". CSI sells wax, fragrance, wicks, vessels, dyes and tools. It does not sell cartons, mailers, labels, ribbon, courier services, electricity, rent, marketing or hours, and it does not publish rates for any of them — so they appear below as blank lines with a note on where your own number comes from. Fill them in before you quote anybody.
| Line | Your figure (per candle or per run) | Where your number comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Printed labels and hang tags | _____ | Print run bill ÷ usable labels, rejects included. |
| Outer cartons, dividers, wrap and tape | _____ | Your packaging invoice ÷ candles it will pack. |
| Inbound delivery on the materials order | _____ | The delivery charged on this order ÷ 1,000. |
| Outbound courier or transport to the client | _____ | Your courier's quote for the actual weight and cartons. |
| Breakage in transit to the customer | _____ | Your own record from last season, as a percentage of units shipped. |
| Labour: melting, pouring, wicking, cleaning, packing | _____ | Hours across the run × the rate you would pay someone else, ÷ 1,000. |
| Electricity and gas for 160 kg of melting | _____ | A pouring week added to your electricity metre reading, or a fair share of the bill. |
| Rent or workspace share for the production weeks | _____ | Monthly rent × the weeks the run occupies the space. |
| Payment gateway, marketplace or platform fees | _____ | Your platform's own statement for an order of this size. |
| Marketing, samples and photography | _____ | Spend attributable to this run ÷ 1,000. |
| Your own costs, total | _____ | Add the rows. |
| Run total | ₹2,35,246.00 + _____ | Materials from CSI plus your own costs. |
A quick sanity check on what the material figure implies, and every retail number here is illustrative rather than a CSI recommendation. If the standard-build candle sold at an illustrative ₹699.00, the 1,000 candles would bring in ₹6,99,000.00 against ₹2,35,246.00 of materials, leaving ₹4,63,754.00 — materials would be 33.7% of the price. That remaining pool is not profit: every line in the worksheet above comes out of it first. Whether it is enough is a pricing question, and the pricing formula guide and the profit guide take it from here.
Two closing notes on the paperwork side. CSI prices are inclusive of tax, as stated on the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page, and GST invoicing is available on request along with MSDS and IFRA documentation — useful when a corporate client asks for a compliance pack with their order. What any of that means for your own tax position, registration or filings is a question for your accountant, not for a supplier blog. And bulk rates are quoted on WhatsApp rather than published, so build the quotation on the prices you can see today and treat anything better as margin rather than as the basis of your number.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles, so this page prices only what is on the store and says several things that do not help a sale. The value build at ₹142.66 a candle is a genuine product, not a compromise, and a brand selling gifting volume should have to justify spending ₹92,582.00 more to reach the standard build. The wax grade everyone compares first is the second-biggest line, not the first. And Eco Soy CSI 400, the cheapest soy here, does not publish a fragrance ceiling — ask on WhatsApp before building a thousand candles on it.
Every price comes from live CSI stock in September 2026, taxes included, and the linked product pages are authoritative if anything changes. Stated page specs are attributed where quoted: CSI 464 fragrance load up to 10%, Roasted Coffee 6–10% of total wax weight for soy, Eucalyptus Spearmint up to 10% with a 199°C flash point and 0% vanillin, Vanilla Bean up to 10% for soy with 2.5% vanillin, and the Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid at a 150 g fill capacity. Where a wax ceiling and an oil range differ, the lower figure governs; these are the manufacturers' stated formulation maximums. The 5% wastage on wax and oil, 5% wick spares and 3% vessel breakage are stated assumptions, not measured data, and the retail figure of ₹699.00 used in the sanity check is illustrative arithmetic, not a CSI price recommendation. Costs CSI does not sell — labels, cartons, wrap, inbound delivery, outbound courier, transit breakage, labour, electricity, rent, platform fees and marketing — are left blank on purpose. Nothing here is tax, registration or business-compliance advice.
Message WhatsApp +91 7397976926 for bulk pricing on a run of this size, GST invoicing, MSDS and IFRA documentation, a delivery quote to your pincode, or confirmation that a single wax grade and a single vessel design can carry the whole order.
