How to Test Hot Throw Before Launching a Candle Fragrance

One closed room of a stated size. An unscented control. A full 14 to 21 day cure. Two readings, at 30 minutes and 2 hours, judged from the doorway. Then a second nose that has not been in the room. Everything else is an opinion.

How do you test hot throw properly? Burn one cured candle in a closed room of about 12×12 ft next to an unscented control of identical wax, wick and jar. Light it, leave, return at 30 minutes and judge from the doorway. Return at 2 hours, confirm the melt pool has reached the glass, and score both readings on a fixed scale. Confirm with a second person who has not been in the room.

How long must it cure first? 14 days minimum for soy, up to 21 for oriental, woody and gourmand oils. Citrus and fresh oils are usually settled at 14. Judging at 48 hours is not a test.

What is a pass? On a 0–5 scale: ≥3 at 30 minutes, ≥3 at 2 hours, no more than a one-point drop between them, character unchanged, full edge-to-edge melt pool, steady flame, no soot, and a second nose within one point.

The reason: a human nose measures difference, not absolute intensity, and it stops registering a constant smell within minutes. Remove the control and remove the fresh nose, and you are not measuring anything.

Each bar narrows because each stage eliminates a variable. By the last bar there is nothing left to explain a low score except the fragrance itself — which is the only condition under which a hot throw result is worth acting on.

How do you test hot throw reliably enough to launch on it?
Make the room a constant, make the candle the only variable, and take the nose out of the equation twice. In practice: pour two candles per candidate scent plus one unscented control — same wax, same wick size, same vessel, same load. Cure them the full 14 to 21 days by family, because a candle judged at 48 hours is being judged before the fragrance has finished binding into the wax. Then burn one candle at a time in a closed room of a stated size, around 12×12 ft, with no cooking, no incense and no other candles. Light it, shut the door and leave. Come back at 30 minutes and score from the doorway before you walk in. Come back at 2 hours, check that the melt pool has reached the glass, and score again. Finally, send in a second person who has not been in the room, because a saturated space reads as neutral to anyone sitting in it. Record every number on a fixed sheet at the moment you take it. Three scents per session is the ceiling. Anything you cannot repeat next week is not a result — it is a mood.

The nine-step hot throw protocol

Hot throw is not a property of a fragrance oil. It is a property of a fragrance oil, in a specific wax, at a specific load, through a specific wick, in a room of a specific size. Test it as if only the first of those existed and you will get a different answer every time you try.

This is a narrower job than deciding whether an oil is worth buying at all. What follows assumes the oil has already passed that gate and you are now asking one question with money behind it: will this candle fill a room, and can I say so on a product page?

Define the room before you define the scentChoose one room, roughly 12×12 ft with a normal ceiling, that has a door you can shut. Nothing else burning, no incense, no reed diffuser, no plug-in, no cooking anywhere near it, no window open. Write the dimensions down and use the same room for every test you ever run. A test room is a measuring instrument; you do not change instruments between readings.

Prepare a controlPour one identical unscented candle from the same wax, wick and jar. If you already sell a candle whose throw you and your customers agree on, use that instead as a known-good reference. The control is not decoration. A nose is very good at ranking two smells and very bad at rating one, so without a comparator you are inventing a number.

Pour the test set with exactly one variableTwo candles per scent. Same wax, same fragrance load, same add temperature, same wick size, same jar, same fill weight, poured on the same day from the same batch of wax. One candle is for burning, one is your untouched cold-throw and character reference. If you change the wick between candidates, you have tested wicks.

Cure the full 14 to 21 days, by familyLids on, room temperature, out of sunlight. Fourteen days is the floor for soy. Heavy oriental, woody and gourmand oils commonly keep gaining body into the third week, while citrus and fresh oils are usually done by day 14 — the mechanics of that difference are set out in how cure time changes the smell of different fragrance families. Arrive with a clean noseNo coffee, no tea with spice in it, no perfume, no scented hand wash or moisturiser, no strong food for at least an hour beforehand. Do not test straight after a workshop, a pour session or a market. The nose is the instrument in this experiment and you would not calibrate a scale on a dirty bench.

Light it and leave the roomTrim the wick to about 5 mm, light, shut the door behind you and go and do something else. Do not sit with it. Do not "keep an eye on it" from a chair two feet away. Five minutes of standing over a forming melt pool costs you the reading you were going to take at thirty.

Score at 30 minutes, from the doorwayOpen the door and stop at the threshold. Record what you get in the first two seconds — that first impression is the closest a maker ever gets to a customer's experience. Note the throw distance and intensity on the sheet before you step in, and before anyone says anything out loud. Written first, discussed second.

Score again at 2 hours and read the candleRepeat the doorway reading. Then go in and look: has the melt pool reached the jar wall? How deep is it? Is the flame steady at roughly 25–35 mm or is it dancing and mushrooming? Any soot on the glass? Compare the smell in the room against the uncut cold jar of the same scent — has the character drifted or only the strength?

Bring in a second nose, then file itSomeone who has not been in the room, and ideally does not know which scent is burning, walks to the doorway and gives their own number. If their score is more than one point off yours, your reading was fatigued. Then write the whole file — oil, lot, load, wax, wick, jar, dates, both scores, verdict — and keep it with the scent forever.
The doorway rule
A candle is bought for the moment someone walks into a room, not the moment someone leans over a jar. Judge it in the posture the customer will judge it in. Almost every "this oil is weak" complaint we hear started with a maker standing over the candle, and almost every "this oil is far too strong" complaint started the same way.

A score you keep in your head is a score you will revise to suit the decision you already wanted to make. Print or copy the sheet below, fill one per candle per session, and fill it at the doorway rather than afterwards. How the verdict resolves. LAUNCH means every row passed and the scent goes to production and to a 500g or 1kg order. RETEST means the fragrance may be fine but something mechanical is not — a short melt pool, a mushrooming wick, a load at the wrong end of the range — so you change one variable and run it again. REJECT is reserved for character failures and for a scent that reads 2 or below at two hours after a clean retest. Most first-round results are RETEST, and that is the point: the sheet stops you from blaming an oil for a wick problem.

If intensity drops sharply between 30 minutes and 2 hours, you are probably looking at a load that is too high rather than too low. Oil that has not fully bound into the wax sits at the surface, flashes off early and leaves the second half of the burn hollow. Counter-intuitively, dropping the load by a point or two often raises the two-hour score — the mechanism is explained in can too much fragrance oil make a candle smell weaker. Work to the ceiling on your wax: up to 13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and up to 10% for Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464.

Six errors that invalidate a hot throw test

A hot throw test does not usually fail by producing a wrong number. It fails by producing a number that cannot be repeated — and the maker only finds out after fifty candles are poured. Each of the six below has ended a launch we have heard about.

1. Nose fatigue — the single biggest one

Olfactory adaptation is fast and total. Sit in a room with a burning candle and within a few minutes your receptors stop reporting it, which is why the maker is always the last person to know that a candle is strong. You cannot judge a candle you have been sitting with. This is not a matter of concentration or experience; it is how the sense works. Every structural element of the protocol above — leaving the room, judging from the doorway, capping the session at three scents, importing a second nose — exists to work around this one fact.

2. Testing in an open-plan studio

An open-plan working space has no defined air volume, usually has a fan or an open window, and generally smells of wax, oil and whatever was poured that morning. A candle that scores 2 there may score 4 in a closed bedroom. Worse, the error is not consistent, so you cannot correct for it. If the only room available is your studio, ventilate it thoroughly, shut it, wait an hour and treat the first candle of the day as a throwaway.

3. Testing more than three scents in a session

Each scent needs a full room reset: extinguish, ventilate, wait for the space to return to neutral, then start again. By the fourth candle your scores compress — everything lands on 3 — and compression looks exactly like agreement. Three is a ceiling, not a target. Two candidates plus the control is a better session than three, and enormously better than a hurried six the week before a launch.

4. Comparing across different waxes, wicks or vessels

The same oil behaves differently in soy, coconut soy and paraffin, and a candle in a narrow 250 ml jar burns and throws differently from the same wax in a wide 500 g apothecary jar. If candidate A is in Luxury Soy Chunks with a Thin C1 wick and candidate B is in Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 with a Thick C2, the comparison is meaningless. Fix the format first, then test scents inside it.

5. Judging before the melt pool reaches the jar wall

Hot throw is released from the surface area of the melt pool. A pool that has only reached half the jar diameter is releasing roughly a quarter of the fragrance the full pool will, so a 30-minute reading on an undersized wick is a reading of the wick, not the oil. This is the most common false negative in candle making. If the pool is still short at two hours, stop the test, size up the wick and start again — wick range here, and the full diagnostic sequence is in the weak throw diagnosis and fix guide.

6. Testing at very different ambient temperatures

Volatiles move faster in warm air. A candle tested in a 34°C Chennai afternoon and the same candle tested in a 19°C Delhi January morning will not score the same, and neither reading is wrong — they are just readings of different conditions. Note the room temperature on every sheet. If you test across seasons, retest your reference control alongside the new candidate so you have a fixed point to correct against.

The CSI principle
A test you cannot repeat next week is not a test. It is a memory of a smell.
Everything in this protocol — the fixed room, the control candle, the written sheet, the second nose — exists for one reason: so that the same candle, tested again a month later by a different person, produces the same number. Repeatability is the only property that makes a result safe to build a launch on.

Room-size calibration, and what to tell the customer

A 12×12 ft room is about 144 sq ft and, at a standard ceiling height, roughly 1,440 cubic feet of air. That is a normal Indian bedroom, and it is the format most 200g container candles are actually bought for — which is why it is the right default test room. It is not, however, the room every customer owns. A candle that comfortably fills a bedroom can genuinely disappear in an open living and dining space of 400 sq ft, and the customer who experiences that will report it as a weak candle rather than as a mismatch of scale.

The commercial move here is not to chase a bigger throw with a bigger load — you will hit the wax ceiling, and past it the candle sweats, pools badly and burns unevenly rather than smelling stronger. The move is to state the room size on the listing. "Scents a room of up to 150 sq ft" is a specification, and specifications convert. It also converts complaints into upsells: the customer with the large living room is not disappointed, they are told to buy two, or to move to a larger vessel. Put the same sentence in your product copy, on the care card and in the reply template your team uses.

Calibrate once, reuse forever
Burn your reference control candle in each of the rooms you actually sell into — a bedroom, a living room, an open-plan space — and score each on the same 0–5 scale. That gives you a conversion factor from your test room to real homes, and you only ever have to do it once. From then on, every new scent is tested in the 12×12 ft room and translated.

That is ₹760 per scent tested, and the jars, spare wicks and leftover wax roll into the next round. Two pieces of equipment are worth adding once and never buying again: a candle making weighing scale at ₹354, because a load stated as 8% and actually poured at 6.4% invalidates every number on your sheet, and a pen thermometer at ₹354, because add temperature is one of the variables you are claiming to hold constant. Recording the result so it travels into production

A score is only useful if the conditions that produced it are recorded next to it. Six months later, when a customer says the new batch smells weaker, the only thing that will settle the question is a file that says exactly what the passing candle was made of. Keep one page per scent — a notebook, a spreadsheet, a shared sheet the team can all write to — with these fields filled every single time.

Keep the second candle unburned. The uncut reference jar from a passing batch is worth more than the notes, because it is a physical standard. When a later production run is questioned, you burn the reference and the new candle side by side in the same room and the argument ends in twenty minutes. Label it, lid it, keep it out of sunlight, and replace it once a year.

Scaling a passing scent: 100g, 500g or 1kg

A LAUNCH verdict changes the order size, not the caution. Move to 100g for the first real production run, 500g once the scent has reordered at least once, and 1kg only for a proven seller or a confirmed festive, wedding or corporate order in hand. The per-gram saving from 100g to 1kg on these three oils is between 0% and 6% — real, but nowhere near enough to justify holding a kilogram on a single passing test. Note also that a new supplier lot deserves a shortened re-test: burn one candle from the new kilo against your kept reference jar before it goes into a production run.

Fresh · the hardest hot throw case
Citrus Lemon Fragrance Oil
Worth putting in every test rig because it is the scent most likely to be wrongly rejected. Light citrus top notes are volatile, so a lemon candle almost always reads a point below a gourmand poured the same day — and a maker who scores it at 48 hours, in an open studio, on an undersized wick will conclude the oil is faulty. Run it at the upper end of your load range, give it the full 14 days, and make sure the melt pool reaches the glass before you score it. Sandalwood Fragrance Oil
A useful second candidate because it is well behaved: heavier molecules carry from a low-temperature soy melt pool, the character holds between the 30-minute and 2-hour readings, and it does not discolour white wax. That stability makes it a good known-good reference once you have a passing batch — if sandalwood suddenly scores a 2 in your test room, the room or your nose is the problem, not the oil. It is also the festival and gifting workhorse, so a passing file here has commercial weight going into Diwali production.

Gourmand · the cure-length test
Vanilla Bean Fragrance Oil
The candidate that proves whether your cure discipline is real. Vanilla and other heavy gourmands frequently gain a full point on the 0–5 scale between day 14 and day 21, which means a maker testing at day 7 will systematically under-score them and a maker testing at day 21 will get the number the customer will actually experience. Wax compatibility: fix the wax before you test the scent

Your test result belongs to a wax, not to an oil. Choose the wax you will actually produce in, and hold it constant for the whole protocol. The load ceiling on that wax sets the top of your range, and overshooting it does not buy you throw — it buys sweating, poor pooling and unpredictable burns.

Add temperature is a variable you are probably not controlling. Fragrance dropped into wax that is too cool never fully binds and will separate; dropped into wax that is too hot, the light top notes flash off before the candle is even poured. For Eco Soy CSI 400 the instruction is 80–90°C with a full two minutes of stirring, and CSI 464 melts and pours at 80–90°C. Use a thermometer, not a guess — otherwise your three candidates were poured under three different conditions and the test compares nothing.

How do you test hot throw before launching a candle fragrance?
Burn one cured candle in a closed room of a stated size, roughly 12 by 12 feet, alongside an unscented control candle of identical wax, wick and vessel. Light it, leave the room, return at 30 minutes and judge from the doorway rather than standing over the jar. Return again at 2 hours, confirm the melt pool has reached the jar wall, and score both readings on a fixed scale. Finish by asking a second person who has not been in the room to score it independently. Test no more than three scents in one session.
How long should a candle cure before you test hot throw?
Fourteen days minimum for soy container candles, and up to 21 days for heavy oriental, woody and gourmand oils which continue to round out and gain body over the third week. Light citrus, aquatic and fresh oils are usually settled by day 14 and gain little after that. Testing hot throw at 48 hours is the single most common reason a maker rejects a fragrance oil that would have performed perfectly at launch.
What size room should you test a candle in?
A closed room of about 12 by 12 feet, which is roughly 144 square feet and matches a standard Indian bedroom. This is the format most 200g container candles are actually bought for. Test in the same room every time. An open-plan studio, a stairwell or a room with a window open cannot be scored, because the air volume is undefined and changing — and a candle that fills a bedroom can disappear entirely in a 400 square foot living and dining space.
Why does my candle smell strong to everyone except me?
Olfactory fatigue. The nose stops registering a constant smell within minutes of exposure, which is why a maker who has been pouring, curing and living with a scent cannot judge its strength. This is the single biggest source of false readings in candle testing. The fix is procedural, not chemical: leave the room while the candle burns, judge from the doorway on re-entry, and always confirm with a second person who has not been in the room.
How many fragrances can you test in one session?
Three, and three is a ceiling rather than a target. Each scent needs its own room reset, which means extinguishing, ventilating and waiting for the space to return to neutral before the next candle is lit. By the fourth scent the nose is compressing everything into a narrow band and the scores stop separating. Two scents plus the control is a cleaner session than three, and far better than a rushed six.
What counts as a passing hot throw score?
On a 0 to 5 scale, a launchable candle scores 3 or higher at 30 minutes, 3 or higher at 2 hours, drops no more than one point between the two readings, holds its character against the cold jar, reaches a full edge-to-edge melt pool by 2 hours with a steady flame and no soot, and is scored within one point by a second person entering the room fresh. Anything scoring 2 or below at 2 hours goes back for a load, wick or cure change rather than to launch.
