I Changed from Untreated Cotton Wicks to Pre-Waxed Wicks — Should I Expect Exactly the Same Burn Behaviour?
Aktie
What should I retest? CONFIRM wick setting and the first 15 minutes; REPEAT flame, pool, soot, heat, throw, g/h and end-of-life. Keep fragrance, colour and storage results.
Are CSI's wicks primed? Not published in this data. Check the product page or ask us on WhatsApp, and let a side-by-side test decide.
How many candles? Six — three untreated control, three pre-waxed (working practice). The kit is ₹1,976.82 on CSI's listed prices.
What priming actually changes
A pre-waxed (primed) wick has been soaked in wax by its maker so that the braid is filled and coated before it reaches you. An untreated wick is bare cotton: it either gets primed by you, by dipping it in melted wax, or it primes itself during the pour and the first burn by soaking up the candle's own wax. Once a candle has burned for a while, both kinds of wick are running on the same fuel — your wax and fragrance — so the long-term burn depends mainly on the braid and fibre. The early part does not. Priming changes how stiff the wick is while the candle sets, which wax burns first when it is lit, and how quickly the flame settles.
So the honest expectation is: not exactly the same burn behaviour, but differences concentrated at the start — unless the new wick is also a different braid or fibre, which is common when you change from one product to another. A pre-waxed wick from a different maker is a new wick in every sense, not just a primed version of your old one. The table below separates the differences priming alone can cause from the ones that come with a different product.
| Difference | What changes | What it can affect | Retest status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stiffness | An unprimed braid is soft; a primed wick is stiffer | How upright the wick stays during the pour and while the wax sets; how much centring help it needs | CONFIRM on every candle |
| Priming wax | Pre-waxed wicks carry the maker's coating; an untreated wick has none, or yours | The wax that burns first; ignition and the first few minutes of flame | CONFIRM on burn 1 |
| Saturation | A primed wick is already filled with wax; a raw wick soaks up fuel as it burns | How quickly the flame settles; a raw wick can splutter or start small | CONFIRM on burn 1 |
| Air in the braid | Priming is commonly said to push air out of the braid | A steadier start, fewer early flickers | CONFIRM on burn 1 |
| Your own dip | If you primed untreated wicks yourself, your wax and dip time varied by batch | Consistency between batches; your old results were measured on your own priming | Record as a process change |
| Braid and fibre | A pre-waxed product may also be a different braid or fibre | Everything after the first minutes — flame, pool, heat | REPEAT, as for any new wick |
What CSI publishes about its own wicks
Honesty first. CSI lists Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made (₹12.00 each at every pack size), Eco Candle Wicks, Performance Wooden Wicks and a Braided Wick Roll of 100 tabs and 61 m of braid for ₹706.82. Whether any of these is primed, with what wax, and how the braid is built is not published in the data behind this guide. Check the product page, or ask us on WhatsApp — and if we cannot confirm it, treat the wick as unknown and let the test tell you. Do not assume a ready-made wick is primed because it is ready-made, or that a roll is unprimed because it is a roll.
That matters for the test design. If you are moving from cutting your own wicks off an untreated roll to buying ready-made pre-waxed wicks, you are changing three things at once: the priming, possibly the braid, and your own process (no more cutting, tabbing or dipping). The test below treats the whole thing as one wick change against your old wick as control. If you need to know which of the three caused a difference, you would need more groups — for most makers, the release decision is what matters, and one side-by-side answers it.
What stays valid and what you retest
| Earlier result | Status | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Fragrance load, cold throw, colour, storage | KEEP | Unlit-candle results; wax and oil unchanged |
| Wick setting method and centring | CONFIRM | Stiffer wicks may need less support — or a different sticker |
| Ignition and first 15 minutes | CONFIRM | The line most directly changed by priming |
| Flame height, soot, mushrooming | REPEAT | If the braid or fibre also changed, these can move |
| Melt pool, depth, time to full pool | REPEAT | Every burn |
| Jar-side heat | REPEAT | Every burn |
| Hot throw | REPEAT | Burns 2–3 |
| Consumption rate and end of life | REPEAT | Weigh every burn; burn to the end |
| Priming step removed from your process | NEW (record) | Change the work instruction; note the date on batch records |
The NEW line is a paperwork line, but it is real. If your old wicks were primed in your own workshop, every result you hold was measured on your priming — a wax you chose, a dip time that varied a little from batch to batch. Removing that step is a process change: update the work instruction, note the date on your batch records, and you have also removed a source of variation. The mixing-process post and the melter-scale post cover process changes of the same kind in other parts of candle making.
The six-candle test, weighted to the start
Scoring sheet
| Line | Untreated (control) | Pre-waxed | Acceptance (written in advance) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wick upright after setting (yes / slight lean / lean) | No worse than control | ||
| Seconds to light; minutes to a steady flame | No slower than control | ||
| Spluttering or flicker in first 15 min (0–3) | No worse than control | ||
| Flame height at 1 h and 3 h (cm) | No higher than control | ||
| Pool diameter and depth at 3 h (cm) | Reaches glass by control's burn; depth within tolerance | ||
| Soot · mushroom (0–3 each) | No worse than control | ||
| Jar-side reading at 3 h | No hotter than control | ||
| Weight lost ÷ hours (g/h) | Close to control | ||
| End: flame-out, wax left, base heat | No worse than control |
Acceptance is the same across this series: no worse than your approved control on every safety line, and within your jar supplier's guidance and the candle fire-safety standard you work to. CSI publishes no numeric flame-height or jar-temperature limit; ASTM F2417 is a commonly cited US standard, and we quote no numbers from it. A faster, cleaner start is a welcome improvement — it cannot offset a worse line later in the candle.
Roll and dip, or ready-made: the cost side
On CSI's listed prices, the Braided Wick Roll is ₹706.82 for 100 tabs and 61 m of braid — ₹7.07 per tab, with up to 61 cm of braid for each. Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made are ₹12.00 each. The difference is ₹4.93 per wick, or ₹2,465.90 across an example 500-candle run. Against that, a roll means cutting, fitting tabs and, if you prime, dipping — your time. Whether the ready-made wick pays for itself depends on how long that takes you and what your time is worth. The table below shows the break-even in minutes per wick at example labour rates you should replace with your own.
| Your labour rate | Per minute | Break-even prep time per wick |
|---|---|---|
| ₹60.00 per hour (example) | ₹1.00 per minute | 4.93 min |
| ₹100.00 per hour (example) | ₹1.67 per minute | 2.96 min |
| ₹150.00 per hour (example) | ₹2.50 per minute | 1.97 min |
| ₹200.00 per hour (example) | ₹3.33 per minute | 1.48 min |
Read it this way: if cutting, tabbing and priming one wick takes you longer than the break-even time at your rate, ready-made wicks are cheaper overall; if it takes less, the roll is. Most makers who prime by hand do it in batches, so time the whole batch and divide. This is a genuine cost question, but it comes second: the wick has to pass the test first. The ₹2-per-candle post shows how to set a per-candle saving against the one-off cost of testing.
The priced test kit
Six 200 g candles in Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 with Citrus Lemon Fragrance Oil at 8% and a 5% pour-loss allowance (a labelled working assumption). The three control candles use your existing untreated wicks. If you have none left and your old wick came off CSI's roll, the roll line below covers it. Use your own production wax and oil if they differ.
| Item | Need | Buy | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 6 × 184 g + 5% = 1,159.2 g | 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g | ₹767.40 |
| Citrus Lemon Fragrance Oil | 6 × 16 g + 5% = 100.8 g | 1 × 100 g + 1 × 15 g | ₹381.42 |
| Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made (the ready-made wick under test) | 3 test candles + spares | 1 × 10 | ₹120.00 |
| White Matte Glass Jar (only if it is your production jar) | 6 jars | 2 packs of 5 | ₹708.00 |
| Test kit | ₹1,976.82 | ||
| Braided Wick Roll (only if you need control wicks cut from a roll) | 100 tabs, 61 m of braid | 1 | ₹706.82 |
Citrus Lemon is the cheapest oil per gram in CSI's collection at 50 g and above (₹3.00 a gram at 100 g), so it keeps the test inexpensive; if your production candle uses a different oil, test with that one instead. Labour, electricity and time are not included.

Releasing and recording
If the pre-waxed wick passes every line, release it with three records. The recipe card: replace "cotton wick, self-primed" with the full description of the new wick. The work instruction: remove the cutting, tabbing and dipping steps, add any change to how the wick is set, and date it. The change record: what changed, why, which SKUs, which results were KEEP and which REPEAT, test dates and sign-off. Keep ten of the new wicks and one finished candle from the first batch as retained samples; CSI does not publish lot numbers, so your own order date is the reference. The approved-specification post explains why "cotton wick" alone is not enough on a recipe card.
Related wick changes: if the pre-waxed product also looks slightly different, the same-length post shows the bench checks for braid and core; if its flame is larger, the bigger-flame post helps isolate why. The storage-testing post explains why a wick-only change rarely needs new storage tests, the full wick-change checklist lists every combustion line, and the emergency 1,000-candle post covers the minimum when time is short.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. We sell both a roll and ready-made wicks, and the ready-made ones earn us more per candle. This page shows the break-even honestly and says plainly that we do not publish whether either is primed.
Wax and oil prices are CSI live listings pulled on 24 September 2026; wick and jar prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026, with wick packs rechecked on 25 September 2026. The roll's per-tab figure (₹7.07) and the break-even minutes are arithmetic; the labour rates are labelled examples for you to replace.
The effects of priming are general candle-making knowledge, phrased as what can happen. Candle counts, burn cycles, the 0–3 scales and the 5% loss allowance are working practices.
