Quick answers — read this first
Should fragrance compatibility be retested whenever wax changes? Yes. Compatibility belongs to the wax–oil pair. The oil's documents stay valid; how the new wax holds it — sweating, surface, cold and hot throw — moves to REPEAT.

Why would 8% sweat in the new wax? In general practice, waxes hold oil differently through warm–cool cycles, and CSI publishes no oil-retention data for any wax. A load that sat inside one wax can sit at the edge of another.

How do I test it? 16 tins: old wax at 8% as control; new wax at 8%, 7%, 6%; two of each in your hottest storage spot, one in a cool spot, one burned. Checkpoints at 48 h, 7, 14, 28 days (labelled examples).

Is lowering the load the fix? Only if the lower load stays dry and still throws against the control. It is a formula change, tested on its own — see the lower-load post.
The short answer
Answer: Yes. Whenever the wax changes, sweating, surface, cold throw and hot throw are repeated for each oil against a control; the oil's IFRA/MSDS documents are kept.
Cause: Oil retention is a wax–oil pairing result that CSI does not publish for any wax. Rule out process, cure, weather and oil lot with a matched control.
Test: Storage ladder 8/7/6% in the new wax vs 8% in the old, hot and cool spots, four checkpoints, one burn candle each. Method: wax-change hub.
The summer storage test: four variants, two spots, four checkpoints Example: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (control, 8%) vs Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 at 8% / 7% / 6% · Jasmine · 85 g Golden Aluminium Tin 48 h 7 days 14 days 28 days Control · Chunks 8% hot spot ×2 · cool spot ×1 hot □ cool □ hot □ cool □ hot □ cool □ hot □ cool □ CSI 468 · 8% hot spot ×2 · cool spot ×1 hot □ cool □ hot □ cool □ hot □ cool □ hot □ cool □ CSI 468 · 7% hot spot ×2 · cool spot ×1 hot □ cool □ hot □ cool □ hot □ cool □ hot □ cool □ CSI 468 · 6% hot spot ×2 · cool spot ×1 hot □ cool □ hot □ cool □ hot □ cool □ hot □ cool □ □ = wipe, photograph, note droplets on top, at the tin edge and under the lid. Record the spot's thermometer reading. Pass: the CSI 468 variant is no worse than the Chunks control at every checkpoint, in both spots.
Each row is one variant — the old wax at 8% as control, then the new wax at 8%, 7% and 6% — with tins in a hot spot and a cool reference spot, inspected at four checkpoints. The loads, spots and checkpoints are labelled working practice; the 85 g fill is CSI's published figure for the Golden Aluminium Tin. A new-wax variant passes only if it is no worse than the control in every box.
Straight answer
I changed wax and my 8% fragrance formula now sweats during summer — should fragrance compatibility be revalidated whenever wax changes?
Yes — because compatibility belongs to the wax–oil pair, not to the oil. Your approved formula was 8% of this oil in the old wax. When the wax changes, the oil's identity, IFRA and MSDS documents stay valid (KEEP), the load must be checked against the new wax's stated ceiling (CONFIRM), and everything about how the wax holds the oil — sweating, the surface after warm days, cold throw, hot throw — goes to REPEAT. In general practice waxes hold oil differently through warm–cool cycles, and CSI publishes no oil-retention data for any wax, so a load that sat comfortably in one can sit at the edge of another. Separate the causes with a storage test: the old wax at 8% as a control, the new wax at 8%, 7% and 6%, stored in your hottest realistic spot and a cooler reference spot, inspected at fixed checkpoints, with one of each burned for throw. In the example — Chunks to CSI 468, Jasmine in 85 g Golden Aluminium Tins — that is 16 tins and ₹2,021.00 in CSI materials.
One line: keep the oil's paperwork; retest how the new wax holds the oil, at your load, in your summer.
To revalidate an 8% formula that sweats in the new wax, run a 16-candle storage test: the old wax at 8% as control, and the new wax at 8%, 7% and 6%, in your hottest storage spot and a cooler reference spot. In this example — Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 replacing Chunks, Jasmine, 85 g Golden Aluminium Tins — the kit is ₹2,021.00 with control wax from stock.

Yes — compatibility belongs to the pair, not to the oil

Your 8% formula was never "8% Jasmine". It was 8% Jasmine in one particular wax.

Makers often think of fragrance compatibility as a property of the oil: this oil is fine at 8%, that one is fussy. In practice it belongs to the pair — this oil, at this load, in this wax, cooled and cured this way, stored in this climate. Change the wax and every part of that sentence except the oil is open again. That is why sweating can appear in a formula that behaved perfectly for a year: the oil has not changed, but the wax that was holding it has.

So yes: whenever the wax changes, fragrance compatibility moves from KEEP to REPEAT — not as a paperwork formality, but because the most common compatibility failures (sweating, oil at the edges, weak cold throw, a wet-looking surface after a hot week) are exactly the ones a new wax can change. What you do not have to do is start the oil's development from scratch. The oil's identity, IFRA and MSDS documents stay valid, and the question narrows to one: does the new wax hold this oil, at a load you can sell, through an Indian summer?

The worked example moves a Jasmine candle in 85 g Golden Aluminium Tins (CSI's published fill) from Luxury Soy Wax Chunks to Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468. Chunks carry a wax maker's stated ceiling of 13%; CSI 468 has no ceiling quoted in this series, so 8% in CSI 468 is a test value, not a carried-over spec. We are not saying CSI 468 holds less oil than Chunks — CSI publishes no oil-retention data for any wax. We are saying that your sweating result is the evidence, and here is how to read it. The wax-change hub sets out the full matrix.

The CSI principle
When the wax changes, the oil is the same — the compatibility is not.
Keep the oil's documents. Retest how the new wax holds it, at your load, in your summer.

What "fragrance compatibility" actually covers

The phrase hides several separate results. Sorting them shows which ones a wax change can reach and which it cannot. The vocabulary is the series' own: KEEP, CONFIRM, REPEAT, NEW.

Fragrance compatibility after a wax change · change-control reading

"Jasmine is compatible — we tested it last year." You tested Jasmine in Chunks. That result is still true for Chunks. It says nothing about CSI 468. Fix: write the wax on every compatibility result you file. A line that reads "Jasmine 8% — OK" is unfinished; "Jasmine 8% in Chunks, 85 g tin, passed 28-day summer storage, date ___" is a result.

Why a formula that never sweated can start in a new wax

Sweating is oil the wax has stopped holding. Heat is usually what reveals it; the wax is usually what decides it.

In general candle-making practice, fragrance oil is held within the wax as it sets and crystallises. When the wax cannot hold all of it under the conditions the candle meets — warm days, cool nights, a hot delivery van — some of it can migrate to the surface or the container edge as droplets. How much a wax holds, and how it behaves through warm-cool cycles, differs between waxes; CSI publishes no oil-retention or crystallisation data for any of them. So a load that sat comfortably inside one wax can sit near or beyond what another holds in the same conditions. That is the most common reason an unchanged formula sweats after a wax change.

Other causes can coincide with a wax change and deserve ruling out: a pour or fragrance-addition temperature that followed the old wax's instructions rather than the new wax maker's; faster cooling in a different room or season; a shorter cure before storage; or simply a hotter month. The table sorts them with a quick check for each.

Sweating causes to separate · general candle-making practice, not CSI measurements
Is it the wax, the load, the process or the weather?
Possible cause Quick check What the storage test shows if it is this
New wax holds less of this oil at this load Does the Chunks control at 8% stay dry beside it? CSI 468 at 8% sweats; 7% or 6% stay dry; control dry
Load too high for any wax in this heat Does the control sweat too? Control and CSI 468 both sweat — not a wax-change problem
Process followed the old wax's instructions Did you use the new wax maker's temperatures? Re-pour per the product page and compare
Fast cooling or short cure Same cooling space and cure checkpoint? Differences shrink when process is matched
Hotter month than your original test Record the storage spot's thermometer reading Cool-spot candles dry, hot-spot candles sweat, in both waxes
Oil lot changed at the same time Same bottle for control and new wax? Split one lot; the result becomes clean
Record the room, not the forecast
Put a thermometer in each storage spot and write the reading at every checkpoint. We will not give you a target temperature — none is published for any CSI wax — but you need to know that your hot spot really was hotter than your cool one, and how hot your own summer storage gets. The Pen Thermometer (₹354.00) will do for a consistent reading.

The summer storage test

This test is built around the shelf, not the flame. It asks one question per variant: does it stay dry, at every checkpoint, in your hottest realistic storage spot, at least as well as the control? Counts, spots and checkpoints are labelled working practice.

Pour all sixteen on the same dayOne Jasmine lot split across every variant; same Eco Thin C1 wick pack; same tins; same cooling space. Follow each wax maker's temperature instructions — for CSI 468 that means its product page, not the Chunks routine.
2
Cure to one checkpoint before storageGive every tin the same cure before it goes to its storage spot. This series uses 48 hours, 7 days and 14 days as labelled examples.
3
Split into hot and cool spotsTwo tins of each variant go to the hottest place a finished candle realistically meets — a top shelf in a stockroom, a spot near a window. One of each goes to a cooler reference spot. Record both spots' thermometer readings at every checkpoint.
4
Inspect on a fixed scheduleAt each checkpoint (48 hours, 7, 14 and 28 days are labelled examples), photograph each tin in the same light, lift the lid, check the surface, the tin edge and the lid underside, and dab with a plain tissue to see whether it picks up oil.
5
Burn the fourth candle of eachOne tin per variant is burned beside the control for hot throw and melt-pool behaviour. A load that stays dry but throws poorly is a different problem — the capacity post covers the load side.
6
Score cold throw blindAt the 14-day checkpoint, someone who does not know which tin is which scores the unlit tins 0–5 at a fixed distance.
7
Decide on the worst checkpointA variant passes only if it is no worse than the control at every checkpoint, in both spots.

Reading the result

The ladder of loads turns a yes/no into a map. The decision rule below uses it.

Decision rule · sweating after a wax change
What the storage test tells you to do
Result Meaning Next step
CSI 468 at 8% dry in both spots, like control The earlier sweating was process or weather Match the process; KEEP 8% once the burn candle also passes
CSI 468 at 8% sweats; 7% dry; control dry The new wax holds less of this oil at 8% in your heat Approve 7% only after hot and cold throw pass against control
CSI 468 sweats at 8% and 7%; 6% dry Wide gap with this oil in this wax Decide on throw at 6%; if it fails, this oil may not suit this wax
All CSI 468 variants sweat; control dry Pairing problem Stay on the old wax for this oil or test another wax
Control sweats too Load or storage problem, not the wax change Review load and storage for both waxes

Lowering the load is a formula change, not a free fix. It changes throw and it changes the cost per candle — and a lower load should never be combined with a wick change in the same round. The lower-effective-load post covers redesigning a formula around a lower load, and the fragrance-change sweating post asks the mirror question: when the oil changed, should you test lower loads before changing wax?

Wiping the tins and shipping them. The sweat wipes off, the candles look fine, and the parcel reaches a customer after three hot days with oil pooled under the lid. Fix: a wiped candle is still a failed candle. Only a variant that stays dry through the checkpoints is approved.

The priced storage-test kit

Grams use the CSI convention (oil = candle weight × load) plus a 5% pour-loss allowance, labelled as a working assumption. The three CSI 468 variants need 996.0 g of wax together — which just fits one 1 kg bag, with 4.0 g to spare, so pour carefully or buy a 500 g top-up. The control needs 328.4 g of Chunks and the Jasmine for all sixteen tins is 103.5 g.

Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (only if you hold none) 328.4 g 1 × 500 g ₹299.00
Kit, control wax bought ₹2,320.00

The 85 g tin is useful here for two reasons: its fill weight is published (so the grams are exact, not a guess), and tins are what most makers ship in summer. Two packs of twelve give 24 tins, so eight are spare for a repeat round at a different load. Jasmine's 103.5 g is cheapest as a 100 g and a 15 g bottle (₹533.00).

What a lower load does to the cost per tin

If the storage test sends you from 8% to 7% or 6%, the cost per tin moves too — down, because Jasmine costs more per gram than CSI 468. At the 1 kg Jasmine rate (₹3.92 a gram) and the 5 kg CSI 468 rate, with a ₹5.90 wick and a ₹30.00 tin, material cost per 85 g tin is ₹112.39 at 8%, ₹109.60 at 7% and ₹106.80 at 6%. The Chunks control at 8% costs ₹109.42. Excludes labour, packaging, freight and GST.

Per 85 g tin · Jasmine at 1 kg rate · wax at 5 kg rate · ₹5.90 wick · ₹30.00 tin
Material cost per tin by load
Variant Oil Wax Material cost vs control
Control · Chunks 8% 6.8 g 78.2 g ₹109.42 —
CSI 468 · 8% 6.8 g 78.2 g ₹112.39 ₹2.97
CSI 468 · 7% 5.95 g 79.05 g ₹109.60 ₹0.18
CSI 468 · 6% 5.1 g 79.9 g ₹106.80 -₹2.61

The saving from a lower load is small per tin and never the reason to choose it. The reason is that the candle stays dry. The risk is that it throws less — which is why the burn candle and the blind cold-throw score sit in the same test. Comparing total finished-candle economics is where load, wax price and throw are weighed together.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. CSI 468 is our wax, and in this example it costs more per tin than the Chunks it replaces. If the storage test shows it cannot hold your Jasmine dry at a load that still throws, keep Jasmine in Chunks — also ours — or in whichever wax your candle was proven in. We publish no oil-retention data for any of our waxes, so your storage shelf is the only honest judge.

Making "retest compatibility on every wax change" workable

One oil is a test. Twenty oils is a system.

If you sell one fragrance, the test above is the whole job. If you sell many, retesting every oil on every wax change quickly becomes impossible — and that is how makers end up retesting none. The workable rule is to retest every oil's compatibility, but not every oil with the full ladder. Group your range, run the full storage test on the oils most at risk (the highest loads, the SKUs sold in summer or shipped in tins, the oils that were ever borderline in the old wax), and run a shorter single-load storage check on the rest. The ten-fragrance post and the twenty-fragrance qualification post set out the grouping.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. Both waxes here are ours, and the incoming one costs more per tin in this example. We publish no oil-retention, crystallisation or sweating data for any of our waxes, so we cannot tell you CSI 468 will hold your Jasmine at 8% — only your storage shelf can.

Every wax and oil price here comes from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026. Tin, wick and thermometer prices are CSI's listed prices (Blog 760 figures verified 10 September 2026, wick packs rechecked 25 September 2026). The 85 g fill is CSI's published figure for the Golden Aluminium Tin. Grams, per-tin costs and pack choices are arithmetic shown to two decimals.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my soy candle sweating after changing wax?
Most often because the new wax holds less of that oil at that load through warm–cool cycles. Rule out process, cure, weather and oil lot by storing the new-wax candles beside control candles in the old wax.
Do I need to retest fragrance load when I change wax?
Confirm it against the new wax's stated ceiling, then retest how the wax holds it: sweating, surface, cold and hot throw. Chunks are rated up to 13%, CSI 464 up to 10%; CSI 468 and Natural Soy Pearl have no ceiling quoted in this series.
How do I test candles for summer sweating?
Store identical candles in your hottest realistic spot and a cooler reference spot, record each spot's thermometer reading, and inspect surface, edges and lid at fixed checkpoints. Compare every variant with a control.
Does coconut soy wax hold fragrance differently from soy wax?
Any two waxes can, and CSI publishes no oil-retention data for any of its waxes. Only a side-by-side storage test with your oil, load and container shows how yours behave.
Is it safe to sell a candle that sweated if I wipe it?
Wiping removes the symptom, not the cause; the oil can reappear in transit. Treat a sweating variant as failed and approve only one that stays dry through the checkpoints.
Should I retest every fragrance when I change wax?
Every fragrance needs its compatibility retested, but not every one needs the full ladder. Prioritise high loads, summer and shipped SKUs, and borderline oils. The twenty-fragrance post shows the grouping.

Non-price figures and assumptions: CSI convention: load is a share of finished weight (85 g at 8% = 6.8 g oil + 78.2 g wax; 7% = 5.95 g + 79.05 g; 6% = 5.1 g + 79.9 g). The 85 g fill is CSI's published figure for the Golden Aluminium Tin. The load ladder, four tins per variant, hot and cool spots, checkpoints and the 5% pour-loss allowance are labelled working practices. CSI publishes no oil-retention, crystallisation, sweating or burn data for any wax, and no storage temperature targets. Sweating mechanisms are general candle-making knowledge. Costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
