Starting Budget · Inventory Before Data
₹1 lakh can buy a kilo of eight fragrances on day one. It should not. This page commits about a third of the budget to a 120-candle discovery batch, uses the sales from it to size the next order scent by scent, and keeps the rest until the pattern is clear.
₹43,074.01
still uncommitted after testing, a 120-candle discovery batch and a data-led reorder, from ₹1,00,000 · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How much inventory should I buy with ₹1 lakh? About a third up front: ₹36,425.79 for tools, eight 15 g testers and a 120-candle discovery batch in six scents. Then ₹20,500.20 once the first sales come in, and hold ₹43,074.01.

How do I know how much of each fragrance to reorder? Use a written rule. Here: target stock = 2 × candles sold in the window, minus candles still unsold. A scent that sold 17 of 20 gets a big reorder; one that sold 5 gets none. See the reorder rule.

Should I buy 1 kg of every fragrance to save money? No. 1 kg of all eight scents is ₹30,971.60 and makes about 500 candles. For most oils the kilo is not cheaper per gram. Scale to 1 kg only the sellers with a real break, such as Mango Coconut (20.7% cheaper per gram at 1 kg).

How many candles should my first batch be? Enough per scent to see a difference in sales: 20 each across six scents, 120 candles. Fewer and one gift order distorts the picture; more and you are guessing at volume.
The short answer
Tranche 1: Tools + melter ₹3,835.00 · 8 testers ₹733.96 · 6 × 350 g oils ₹8,682.83 · CSI 464 25 kg ₹12,685.00 · 130 jars ₹9,204.00 · 150 wicks ₹885.00 · 160 stickers ₹400.00 = ₹36,425.79.
Tranche 2: 86 more candles sized by sell-through: oils ₹5,266.40, wax ₹8,625.80, jars ₹6,018.00, wicks ₹590.00 = ₹20,500.20.
Held: ₹43,074.01 for tranche 3 (kilo packs of proven sellers), packaging and courier at your own quotes. Planning opening inventory to reorder only after sales is the same idea at ₹50,000.
₹1 lakh released in tranches — sales data decides where tranche 2 goes Committed before any sale Not yet committed ₹36,425.79Tranche 1 · test + discovery₹20,500.20Tranche 2 · reorder by sales₹43,074.01Held · tranche 3 and cash The alternative: 1 kg of all eight scents on day one = ₹30,971.60 of fragrance alone, 31.0% of the budget, about 62 candles per scent (500 in all) before you know which two scents customers ignore. Tranche 2 is sized from an example sell-through, not from data. Replace it with your own sales after the first selling window.
The bar is the full ₹1,00,000 at CSI's listed prices. Tranche 1 is everything bought before a single candle is sold. Tranche 2 is sized by the example sell-through on this page and will look different with your own sales. The dashed section is not idle: it funds kilo packs of the scents that prove themselves, packaging and courier, and it is the cushion that lets you say no to a slow scent.
Straight answer
I have ₹1 lakh to start a candle business. How much inventory should I buy before I know which fragrances will actually sell?
Buy enough to find out, not enough to guess. Commit ₹36,425.79 (36.4%) first: tools including a 1-litre melter, eight 15 g testers, then 350 g each of the six scents that pass, 25 kg of CSI 464, 130 jars and 150 wicks. That makes a discovery batch of 120 candles, 20 per scent. Sell through a first window, then size the next order with one written rule: target stock equals twice the candles sold, minus what is still unsold. On the example sales on this page, that rule reorders 86 candles for ₹20,500.20 and buys nothing at all for the slowest scent. That still leaves ₹43,074.01 uncommitted for tranche 3, where proven sellers with a real price break, like Mango Coconut and Eucalyptus Spearmint, move to 1 kg. The alternative, a kilo of all eight scents on day one, costs ₹30,971.60 in fragrance alone and makes about 500 candles in scents you have never sold.
One line: a big budget buys you the right to wait for data — use it.
Eight 15 g testers cost ₹733.96 together: Citrus Lemon ₹81.42, Eucalyptus Spearmint ₹68.44, Cucumber Green Tea ₹93.22, Mango Coconut ₹93.22, Orchard Pear ₹105.02, Cinnamon Vanilla ₹106.20, Woody Oud ₹93.22, Blue Ocean ₹93.22. Test all eight in your jar before a single 100 g is bought.

Why a big budget needs a small first batch

₹1 lakh does not change what you know about your customers. It only changes how expensive a wrong guess can get.

With ₹10,000, overbuying is limited by the budget itself. With ₹1 lakh it is not, and that is the risk. A new brand with no sales history cannot know which of eight scents will lead. The honest answer to "how much inventory should I buy?" is therefore enough to generate sales data, and then more of whatever the data favours. That means a discovery batch big enough that the differences between scents are real, and small enough that the slow scents cost you little.

The plan on this page uses three tranches. Tranche 1 tests eight scents and pours 120 candles in the six that pass. Tranche 2 is placed only after a first selling window, and each scent's share is set by how many it sold. Tranche 3 moves the proven sellers to larger packs, but only where the larger pack is actually cheaper per gram. Most of the budget is still in your account when you place tranche 3, which is exactly where it should be.

What "selling window" means here
It is whatever period gives you a real read: four weeks for a steady online shop, one exhibition weekend, or the fortnight before Diwali. Pick it in advance and do not reorder mid-window because one day went well. The sales figures on this page are an example to show the method, not data about any scent.

Tranche 1: test and discover

Tranche 1 buys the tools once and never again. The standard set (scale, pen thermometer, pouring jug, stirring sticks, wick centering devices) is ₹1,475.00, as in the ₹10,000 plan. At this budget the Mini Electric Wax Melter (₹2,360.00) earns a place too, because 128 pours from a double boiler is slow and uneven. Melter throughput is not published, so treat it as a steadier heat source rather than a speed promise.

Woody Oud 3 × 100 g + 50 g = 350 g · 20 candles ₹1,630.76
CSI 464 wax 2 × 10 kg + 5 kg = 25 kg (need 23,560 g + 5%) ₹12,685.00
White Matte Glass Jars 26 packs of 5 = 130 (128 used) ₹9,204.00

Wick stickers 4 × 40 = 160 ₹400.00
Tranche 1 ₹36,425.79

Each discovery scent gets 350 g of oil, bought as three 100 g bottles and one 50 g. Twenty candles at 16 g use 320 g, leaving 30 g per scent, or just under 10%, to cover pour loss and a couple of made-to-order candles. Orchard Pear and Blue Ocean are assumed to drop out at the test stage. That is a choice for the worked example; your burn decides. Wax is CSI 464 at ₹507.40 a kilo, identical at 1 kg, 5 kg and 10 kg, rated up to 10% fragrance by the wax maker. The 8% production load sits comfortably inside that formulation ceiling.

Why 20 candles per scent? Because with five or ten, one friend buying three candles is a trend. With twenty, a scent that sells 17 and a scent that sells 5 are telling you something. Twenty per scent across six scents is also the most this budget should commit before seeing a sale: tranche 1 is 36.4% of the budget, and 3.8% of it is tools you keep regardless.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. For a ₹1 lakh budget we could reasonably sell you 1 kg of every scent and call it "production ready". On our own listed prices, two of those eight kilos would be scents that fail the test, and several of the rest save little per gram: Woody Oud's 1 kg is ₹4.53 a gram, exactly what its 100 g costs, and Cinnamon Vanilla's saves 5.9%. The kilo buys stock you do not yet know you need. Buy 350 g, sell, then decide.

Tranche 2: the reorder rule

A reorder rule you wrote down before the launch is worth more than any instinct you have after it.

Here is the rule used on this page. For each scent, target stock for the next window = 2 × candles sold in the last window. Subtract the candles still unsold. What remains is what you pour. Oil is then bought for that many candles, less the 30 g already in hand, plus 5% for pour loss, rounded up to the cheapest combination of in-stock packs. The factor of 2 is a working assumption that covers one more window and a buffer. Change it if your windows are long or your supplier lead time is short.

Tranche 2 · example sell-through, not data · oil packs at CSI prices
Six scents, one rule, six different reorders
Scent Sold (example) Unsold Target Pour Oil bought Oil cost
Citrus Lemon 17 of 20 3 34 31 500 g ₹1,420.00
Mango Coconut 16 of 20 4 32 28 500 g ₹1,982.00
Cinnamon Vanilla 12 of 20 8 24 16 50 g + 2 × 100 g ₹1,239.00
Eucalyptus Spearmint 9 of 20 11 18 7 100 g ₹354.00
Woody Oud 8 of 20 12 16 4 50 g ₹271.40
Cucumber Green Tea 5 of 20 15 10 0 — ₹0.00 — do not reorder

Look at what the rule does. Citrus Lemon and Mango Coconut, the two strongest sellers in the example, get the largest reorders, and for both the cheapest way to cover the need is a single 500 g pack. Cucumber Green Tea sold only 5 of 20 and still has 15 on the shelf, so the rule buys nothing. It does not say drop the scent; it says sell what you have first. The total is 86 more candles and ₹5,266.40 of oil, against the ₹8,682.83 spent evenly across six scents in tranche 1.

Tranche 2 · the rest of the order
Wax, jars and wicks for the reorder
Material Need Already in hand Buy ₹
CSI 464 wax 86 × 184 g + 5% = 16,615 g about 262 g left from 25 kg after tranche 1 and its 5% pour loss 17 kg ₹8,625.80
White Matte jars 86 2 17 packs of 5 ₹6,018.00
Eco Thin C1 wicks 86 22 100 ₹590.00
Tranche 2 total (with oils) ₹20,500.20

Wax, jars and wicks are shared by every scent, so they are the safe place to carry a little extra. Fragrance is not shared, which is why the rule is applied to oil scent by scent. How much oil to buy per scent when launching five and whether to cut scents or buy smaller quantities look at the same problem from the launch side, before any sales exist.

Tranche 3: when a kilo makes sense

Tranche 3 is where the ₹43,074.01 starts to be spent, and only after two windows agree on the leaders. Moving a proven seller to 1 kg is right when two things are true: you will use the kilo within a few months, and the kilo is actually cheaper per gram. On CSI's listed catalogue the second condition is rarer than most makers expect. Of 91 oils that list both 100 g and 1 kg, 52 are within 1% per gram. Only 24 show a saving of 5% or more.

1 kg vs 100 g per gram · CSI live pricing, 24 September 2026

Cucumber Green Tea ₹3.53 ₹3.33 5.7% ₹3,327.60 ₹223.30
Woody Oud ₹4.53 ₹4.53 0.0% ₹4,531.20 ₹242.56

Five of the six discovery scents are among the 24 oils with a 1 kg saving of 5% or more, but the size of the saving varies a lot. Mango Coconut saves 20.7% per gram and Eucalyptus Spearmint 13.3%; for those two, if they keep selling, the kilo saves real money as well as reorders. Citrus Lemon, Cinnamon Vanilla and Cucumber Green Tea save between 5.6% and 5.9%, which is worth having but not worth buying early for. Woody Oud is priced the same per gram at every size from 100 g, so there is no money reason to buy its kilo; buy it only when reorder frequency makes 100 g bottles a nuisance. Per-candle figures use CSI 464, an Eco Thin C1 wick and a White Matte jar, and exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST.

1
Week 1 — tranche 1 test orderTools, the melter and eight 15 g testers. Pour eight test candles at 7.5% in White Matte jars with Eco Thin C1 wicks. Nothing else is bought until they have cured and burned.
2
Week 2 — tranche 1 production350 g of each of the six scents that passed, 25 kg of CSI 464, 125 more jars and the wicks. Pour 20 candles per scent. Record weights, re-pours and breakages, because these become your real wastage figure.
3
Set the window and the rule in writingDecide the selling window and the reorder factor before the first candle is sold. This page uses target = 2 × sold − unsold; a shorter supplier lead time or a longer window might justify 1.5.
4
End of window — tranche 2Count sold and unsold per scent, apply the rule, and buy oil for each scent separately. Wax, jars and wicks are bought for the total.
5
After a second window agrees — tranche 3Move a scent to 1 kg only if it led both windows and its 1 kg is meaningfully cheaper per gram. Otherwise keep buying 100 g or 500 g and leave the money in hand.

The upfront alternative, priced

For comparison, here is what the same ₹1 lakh looks like if it is spent the way many new brands spend it: a kilo of every scent on day one. The fragrance alone is ₹30,971.60, 31.0% of the budget. At 16 g per candle, each kilo makes 62.5 candles, so eight kilos make 500 candles. Those 500 candles also need about 92 kg of wax and 500 jars, which the budget cannot buy after the oil.

Blue Ocean ₹4,956.00 62.5 Dropped at test
Total ₹30,971.60 500 ₹12,021.60 locked in the three weakest

In the example, ₹12,021.60 of that order sits in the two scents that failed the test and the one that sold slowly. The staged plan spent ₹1,433.11 on the same three. That difference, not any per-gram saving, is the real economics of a first inventory. A lean inventory for three months and buying 1 kg only for bestsellers follow the same logic further down the line. Which materials to buy in bulk and which in trial sizes and the order in which a new brand should buy everything fill in the rest of the purchasing sequence.

The CSI principle
Let the first 120 candles choose the next 500.
The cheapest market research a candle brand can do is a discovery batch in its own jar and its own scents. It costs a third of this budget and it tells you where the other two thirds should go.
The mistake that looks like data. Reordering after the first week because one scent sold six candles to one customer. A single gift order or exhibition sale can make any scent look like a leader. Wait for the window you set, count the candles, and apply the rule. How much wax to hold before marketing covers the same patience from the wax side.
₹1 lakh is not a reason to buy more. It is a reason to be able to wait.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A ₹1 lakh buyer is exactly the customer a supplier would like to sell eight kilos to. This page advises against that, shows that most of those kilos are not cheaper per gram on our own listings, and names the three discovery scents where a kilo does save money.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. White Matte jars, Eco wicks, scale and thermometer are Blog 760 figures, verified 10 September 2026. The melter, jug, stirring sticks, wick centering devices and wick stickers come from CSI's pull of 24–25 September 2026. Pack choices in tranche 2 are the cheapest in-stock combination covering each need, computed from those prices.

The sell-through figures, the reorder factor of 2, the 5% pour-loss allowance, the 7.5% test and 8% production loads, and which testers drop out are working assumptions to show the method. They are not sales data about any scent. For a quote on a tranche, GST invoicing, MSDS or IFRA documentation, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

How much stock should a new candle business keep?
Enough for one discovery batch that shows which scents sell: here 20 candles each in six scents. With ₹1 lakh, that first commitment is ₹36,425.79 including tools. Reorder by sell-through after a first selling window, not before.
How do I decide which candle fragrances to reorder?
Write a rule before launch. This page uses target stock = 2 × candles sold in the window, minus unsold stock. In the example, a scent that sold 17 of 20 gets a 500 g reorder and one that sold 5 of 20 gets nothing until its stock clears.
Is buying 1 kg fragrance oil cheaper for a candle business?
Only for some oils. On CSI's listings, 52 of 91 oils cost within 1% per gram at 1 kg and at 100 g. In this plan, Mango Coconut (20.7%) and Eucalyptus Spearmint (13.3%) save clearly at 1 kg, Citrus Lemon (5.6%) modestly, and Woody Oud not at all.
How many fragrances should I launch with ₹1 lakh?
Test eight, launch six. Eight 15 g testers cost ₹733.96. Six scents at 20 candles each keeps every scent's sample large enough to compare without tying up money in all eight.
How much soy wax do I need for 120 candles?
120 × 184 g = 22,080 g at an 8% load in a 200 g candle, plus 1,480 g for eight test candles and 5% for pour loss. This plan buys 25 kg of CSI 464 for ₹12,685.00, ₹507.40 a kilo at every pack size.
What should I do with money left after buying candle inventory?
Hold it for the reorders your sales justify, kilo packs of proven sellers with a real price break, and packaging and courier at your own suppliers' quotes. On this plan that is ₹43,074.01 after tranche 2.
Let sales size the order

Non-price figures and assumptions: Production candles are 200 g at 8% (16 g oil + 184 g wax); test candles 200 g at 7.5% (15 g oil + 185 g wax). Pour loss is planned at 5%, the top of the 3–5% working assumption used across this series. Sell-through figures (17, 16, 12, 9, 8 and 5 of 20) are illustrative, not sales data. The reorder factor of 2 is a working assumption. Per-candle material cost is wax + oil + wick + jar and excludes labour, packaging, freight and GST. Price-break statistics (52 of 91 oils within ±1% between 100 g and 1 kg; 24 with a saving of 5% or more) are from the 24 September 2026 pull. The 10% ceiling for CSI 464 is the wax maker's stated formulation maximum, not a regulatory limit. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
