I Have 10 Kg of Wax Melt Wax — How Many 50 g Wax-Melt Packs Can I Produce After Adding 12% Fragrance?
How much fragrance oil do I need? To bring all 10 kg of wax to a true 12%: 10,000 × 0.12 ÷ 0.88 = 1,363.64 g. In Cinnamon Vanilla the cheapest cover is 1,365 g for ₹6,383.80.
Why isn't it 10,000 ÷ 50 = 200 packs? Because the oil is added to the wax, not taken out of it. The 10 kg is only the wax; the finished melts weigh 11.36 kg. Dividing the wax by the pack weight under-counts by 27 packs. The maths.
Which wax can carry 12%? Of CSI's waxes, only Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (rated up to 13%). CSI 464 is rated up to 10%. CSI lists no melt-specific wax. If your 10 kg is another maker's melt wax, use that maker's stated maximum. Details.
Working backwards from the wax
Most production questions start from the order: so many packs, how much wax. This one starts from the stock: this much wax, how many packs. The direction changes the formula. With the finished-weight convention, each pack of weight W at load L contains W × (1 − L) of wax. The number of packs your wax can make is the wax divided by that: packs = wax ÷ (W × (1 − L)), rounded down, after allowances. The oil you need is whatever brings that wax to the load: oil = wax × L ÷ (1 − L).
| Method | Oil added | Finished melts | Packs | True load | Problem |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10,000 g ÷ 50 g | not considered | — | 200 | — | Ignores the oil's weight: under-counts by 27 packs |
| 12% of 10 kg added on top | 1,200 g | 11.20 kg | 224 | 10.71% | Load lower than planned |
| Formula: 10,000 ÷ 44 g; oil = 10,000 × 0.12 ÷ 0.88 | 1,363.64 g | 11.36 kg | 227 | 12.00% | Before loss and tests |
The first shortcut is the most common, and it is costly in a quiet way: you promise a client 200 packs, make 227, and the extra 27 either sit unlabelled or were never needed, while the oil you bought was sized for a different number. The second shortcut is the percentage-of-wax habit: adding 1,200 g of oil to 10 kg of wax gives 11.2 kg of melts at 10.71%, not 12%. Every pack smells slightly weaker than the test you approved. Only the formula gives 12% and the real pack count. Ordering for 100 × 250 g at 10% runs the same convention from the other direction.
| Load | Wax per pack | Packs on paper | Packs poured after 4% loss | To sell after 3 tests | Oil to buy |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8% | 46.0 g | 217 | 209 | 206 | 869.57 g |
| 10% | 45.0 g | 222 | 213 | 210 | 1,111.11 g |
| 12% | 44.0 g | 227 | 218 | 215 | 1,363.64 g |
| 13% | 43.5 g | 229 | 221 | 218 | 1,494.25 g |
Higher loads make more packs from the same wax, because more of each pack is oil. Going from 8% to 12% adds nine sellable packs from the same 10 kg, and costs about 494 g more oil. That is not a reason to push the load: the ceiling is set by the wax, not by the yield. It is simply how the arithmetic works when the wax is the fixed input.
Is 12% allowed in your wax?
The question calls it "wax melt wax". CSI does not list a wax sold specifically for wax melts, and we will not pretend a container wax is one. What matters for the load is the maximum that wax's maker states. In CSI's catalogue only two waxes have one:
| Wax | Stated maximum | 12%? | If not, what to do | 10 kg costs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | Up to 13% | Within the maximum | — | ₹5,999.00 |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | Up to 10% | Over — not allowed | Plan at 10% or below: 210 packs to sell | ₹5,074.00 |
| Soy Pillar Wax, Natural Soy Pearl, coconut and other waxes | Not published | Unknown | Ask CSI for the maker's stated maximum | — |
| Another maker's melt wax (yours) | Your supplier's figure | Only if their maximum is above 12% | Treat their figure as given | — |
Two cautions go with the Chunks row. The 13% is the wax maker's stated formulation maximum, not a regulatory limit and not a target. And 12% leaves one point of headroom, so weigh every batch's oil on a scale; rounding up a few grams per batch across a 10 kg run can nudge the true load towards the ceiling. Chunks are a container soy wax; how they release from your mould and hold their edges at 12% is a test result, not a promise. In general practice high-load melts are watched for oil seeping to the surface and soft edges, so check your test packs after your cure checkpoint before pouring the rest. Mould water-weight conversion covers cavity sizing.
How much oil to buy for 10 kg
The oil need is 1,363.64 g. It is sized for all 10 kg of wax, not only the wax that ends up in packs, because the loss happens to the blended melt: wax and oil are lost together in the jug and mould. Buying oil only for the 218 poured packs would leave the last batch short. Oils are listed up to 1 kg a bottle, so this is a 1 kg plus smaller sizes.
| Option | Bottles | Grams | Price | Spare |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cheapest cover | 1 kg + 3 × 100 g + 50 g + 15 g | 1,365 g | ₹6,383.80 | 1.36 g |
| Fewer bottles | 1 kg + 500 g | 1,500 g | ₹6,855.80 | 136.36 g |
The cheapest cover leaves barely more than a gram spare, which is fine if your weighing is exact and your loss allowance was honest. The 1 kg + 500 g option costs ₹472.00 more and leaves 136 g spare for a re-pour or a second test. Cinnamon Vanilla is used here as a festive example; it is one of the oils with a small 1 kg saving (5.9% against the 100 g per gram). No per-oil load, throw or melt behaviour is published: test your chosen oil at 12% before the full batch.
| Pack | Price | Per kg | 50 g packs at 44 g wax |

| 500 g | ₹299.00 | ₹598.00 | 11 |
| 1 kg | ₹599.00 | ₹599.00 | 22 |
| 5 kg | ₹2,995.00 | ₹599.00 | 113 |

|---|---|---|---|
| 15 g | ₹106.20 | ₹7.08 | 2 |

Packs, moulds and containers
A 50 g pack could be one container, a clamshell of small cubes or a bag of shapes. CSI publishes no fill weight for its Wax Melts Containers Empty (Heart or Square) and no cavity weights for its melt moulds, so the per-pack packaging count must come from weighing. If one container holds your 50 g (weigh one filled with your blend to check), 215 containers are two 100-packs, a 10 and a 5: ₹6,342.50, ₹29.50 each. If your pack is several small pieces from a mould, weigh one set piece and divide.
| Route | What to weigh | Count rule | CSI item | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| One container per pack | One filled container of blend | 215 containers if one holds 50 g | Wax Melts Containers 2 × 100 + 10 + 5 | ₹6,342.50 |
| Small cubes per pack | One set cube | 50 g ÷ cube weight, per pack | 40-cavity square mould | ₹472.00 per mould |
| Shaped pieces per pack | One set piece | 50 g ÷ piece weight, per pack | 15-cavity rose mould / 30-cavity cloud mould | ₹153.40 / ₹529.82 |
Measuring clamshell capacity goes through the weighing step in detail, and 500 × 75 g melt packs shows the packaging count for a larger run.
The whole plan, priced
| Item | Packs | Price | Per sellable pack |
|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (if buying) | 10 kg | ₹5,999.00 | ₹27.90 |
| Cinnamon Vanilla Fragrance Oil | 1 kg + 3 × 100 g + 50 g + 15 g | ₹6,383.80 | ₹29.69 |
| Wax Melts Containers (if one per pack) | 2 × 100 + 10 + 5 | ₹6,342.50 | ₹29.50 |
| Total | ₹18,725.30 | ₹87.09 |
Per sellable pack the materials come to about ₹87.09, including the share of wax and oil lost and poured into test packs, and excluding labels, labour, freight and GST. That per-pack figure is the one to price against, not the 44 g of wax and 6 g of oil in the pack itself, because the loss and tests are real costs of making the 215.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles or melts. We list no melt-specific wax and this page says so. It also tells you not to run CSI 464 at 12%, though it is our cheaper wax, because its maker rates it up to 10%.
Wax and oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. Container and mould prices are from the catalogue addendum pulled 24–25 September 2026. Pack counts, oil quantities and per-pack costs are arithmetic, shown in full.
The 4% loss, three test packs and the one-container-per-pack route are labelled working assumptions. The 12% load is the reader's plan; ceilings (Chunks up to 13%, CSI 464 up to 10%) are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits.
