On a thousand-candle run some candles will fail your inspection: a sunk top, a wick off centre, a scuffed jar. They still used wax, oil and a wick. This page works backwards from the thousand good candles you must deliver to the number you must pour, and prices every material for it.

candles to pour for 1,000 delivered + 5 QC samples at a 4% reject rate, plus 4 tests · 199.19 kg wax, 17.32 kg oil, 1,104 wicks at 8% with 3% loss · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How many candles to pour for 1,000 good ones at a 4% reject rate? Divide by the pass rate: (1000 + 5 QC samples) ÷ 0.96 = 1046.88, so 1,047, plus 4 pre-production tests = 1,051 poured. Multiplying by 1.04 gives 1,046, one short.

How much wax and fragrance? At 8%, 184 g of wax and 16 g of oil per 200 g candle. For 1,051 with 3% loss: 199,185.52 g of wax and 17,320.48 g of fragrance.

How many wicks? One per poured candle, rejects included, plus about 5% for wicks spoiled while setting: 1,104. One 1,000-pack plus 1 × 100-pack + 1 × 10-pack = 1,110 Eco Thin C1 wicks for ₹6,549.00.

What do the rejects cost? About 42 candles at ₹273.91 of material each, roughly ₹11,504.14. Remelting can recover some wax and oil, not the wicks, and only sometimes the jars. See the cost of rejects.
The short answer
Formula: Production candles = good candles needed ÷ (1 − reject rate), rounded up. Then add pre-production tests. Then pour loss on wax and oil.
This order: (1000 + 5) ÷ 0.96 → 1,047 + 4 tests = 1,051 poured · 199.19 kg wax · 17.32 kg oil · 1,104 wicks · 1,073 jars.
Order: Bergamot Amber ₹94,319.04 · wax ₹1,19,980.00 · wicks ₹6,549.00 · jars ₹76,110.00 = ₹2,96,958.04.

Work from the bottom up. The client needs 1,000; you keep 5 as QC retained samples, so 1,005 must pass. At a 4% reject rate only 96% of production candles pass, so you pour 1,005 ÷ 0.96, rounded up to 1,047. The 4 pre-production tests sit outside the reject rate because they are poured before production. All of these rates and counts are working assumptions.
Straight answer
I have a corporate order for 1,000 × 200 g candles. How much wax, fragrance oil and how many wicks should I order if production rejects are expected?
Work backwards from the candles that must pass. The client needs 1,000, and you should keep a few as QC retained samples, say 5, so 1,005 must pass inspection. If you expect 4% of production candles to fail (a working assumption; use your own history), only 96% pass. So divide: 1,005 ÷ 0.96 = 1046.88, rounded up to 1,047 production candles. Multiplying by 1.04 instead gives 1,046 and leaves you short. Add 4 pre-production test candles and you pour 1,051. Every one of them, rejects included, uses 184 g of wax, 16 g of oil and a wick. With 3% pour loss that is 199,185.52 g of wax and 17,320.48 g of fragrance. Wicks: 1,051 plus about 5% for wicks spoiled while setting = 1,104, which is one 1,000-pack of Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 plus 1 × 100-pack + 1 × 10-pack. In Bergamot Amber and Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, with 1,075 White Matte jars, the order comes to ₹2,96,958.04. The rejects account for about ₹11,504.14 of material. At this scale, ask us for a quote on the wax and oil: listed packs stop at 10 kg and 1 kg.
One line: good ÷ pass rate = 1,047; add 4 tests; buy for 1,051 — every reject still eats a wick.
Every poured candle takes a wick, including the ones that fail. Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 come in a 1,000-pack at ₹5,900.00, ₹5.90 a wick, the same rate as the smaller packs. For 1,104 wicks, the 1,000-pack plus 1 × 100-pack + 1 × 10-pack costs ₹6,549.00. Confirm the wick in your jar with a burn test; CSI does not publish wick sizes per diameter.

Divide by the pass rate, do not multiply

A 4% reject rate does not mean 4% more candles. It means 96% of what you pour is usable, and those are different sums.

If you pour P candles and 4% fail, you keep 0.96 × P. To keep 1,005, P must be 1,005 ÷ 0.96 = 1046.88, so 1,047. Multiplying 1,005 by 1.04 gives 1045.2, rounded up to 1,046, and 4% of 1,046 failing leaves you with 1004 good candles, one short of what you need. At 4% the gap is one candle. At higher reject rates, typical of a new jar, a new wax or a new team, it grows quickly.

Good candles needed: 1,005 (1,000 + 5 QC samples) · production pours only, before tests
Multiplying against dividing
Reject rate Pour if you multiply Good candles you get Short by Pour if you divide Good candles you get
2% 1,026 1,005 0 1,026 1,005
4% 1,046 1,004 1 1,047 1,005
8% 1,086 999 6 1,093 1,005
12% 1,126 990 15 1,143 1,005
20% 1,206 964 41 1,257 1,005

At 2% the two methods agree. At 20%, which is not unusual for a first run in an unfamiliar container, multiplying leaves you dozens of candles short. The rule is simple and worth memorising: production = good needed ÷ (1 − reject rate), rounded up. Then add pre-production tests, which sit outside the reject rate because they are poured before production starts, and then add pour loss to the material.

Where your reject rate comes from
There is no published reject rate for candle production, and CSI does not publish one. Use your own records: rejected candles ÷ candles poured, on your last few runs in the same jar and wax. If you have no records, run a pilot batch of 50 in the production jar and count. A figure from a real pilot beats any assumption, including our 4%.

What a reject consumes

A rejected candle is a finished candle that failed inspection. It used everything a good one did. What you can get back depends on why it failed and when you noticed.

General practice · outcomes depend on your process · no CSI measurements
Each material in a rejected candle
Material Consumed by a reject? Recoverable? Plan for it as
Wax Yes, 184 g Often, by remelting, if clean Full consumption; any recovery is a bonus
Fragrance Yes, 16 g Partly; remelted wax already carries it Full consumption; recheck scent on remelt
Wick Yes, 1 No Full consumption, always
Jar Yes, 1 Sometimes, after cleaning; not if chipped Full consumption; recovered jars are a bonus

Plan every reject as fully consumed. If you manage to remelt the wax and clean some jars, that is a saving on the next order, not a reason to buy less for this one. Remelted, already-scented wax is also not the same as fresh wax at 8%: some makers blend it back in small proportions and retest, others use it for their own testers. Decide how you will handle it before the run, not after.

The wicks that ran out on the last tray. A maker orders exactly 1,000 wicks for 1,000 candles, pours 1,047 to cover rejects, and runs out of wicks before the last tray. Wicks are the one material a reject never gives back. Buy one per poured candle, then add a setting allowance on top. I Need 1,000 Candles and Each Uses One Wick — Should I Order Exactly 1,000 Wicks or Keep Additional Pieces for Testing, Defects and Production Mistakes? covers wick extras on a 1,000-candle order in more detail.

Wax. 199,185.52 g is about 19.9 bags of 10 kg. The listed Chunks bags stop at 10 kg: 20 × 10 kg is ₹1,19,980.00, and 40 × 5 kg would be ₹1,19,800.00, ₹180.00 less, because the 5 kg bag is ₹599.00 a kilo against ₹599.90 for the 10 kg. At 200 kg, ask for a quote on WhatsApp; no volume discount is published, so do not assume one. Chunks are rated up to 13% fragrance load, well above 8%.

Fragrance. 17,320.48 g of Bergamot Amber rounds to 17 × 1 kg + 3 × 100 g + 2 × 15 g, ₹94,319.04. Bergamot Amber is ₹5.44 a gram at both 500 g and 1 kg, and ₹5.60 at 100 g, so the kilo bottles carry the order. Seventeen kilos of one oil is well past the listed 1 kg pack, so this is another line to quote on WhatsApp and to confirm in stock before you accept the order. Jars. White Matte Glass Jars at ₹354.00 for 5, 1,073 needed including 2% for glass broken in handling. The jar's fill weight is not published; weigh a 200 g test pour.

If your reject rate is different

The reject rate is the one number on this page most likely to be wrong for you. Here is the whole order recalculated at four rates, so you can see what each costs.

1,005 good + 4 tests · 8% · 3% loss · Chunks in 10 kg bags · CSI listed prices
The order at four reject rates
Reject rate Poured Fragrance Wax Order cost Per delivered candle
0% 1,009 16.63 kg 191.23 kg ₹2,89,638.04 ₹289.64
2% 1,030 16.97 kg 195.21 kg ₹2,93,593.00 ₹293.59
4% 1,051 17.32 kg 199.19 kg ₹2,96,958.04 ₹296.96
8% 1,097 18.08 kg 207.90 kg ₹3,10,475.04 ₹310.48

Each extra point of reject rate costs roughly eleven candles' worth of every material on a 1,000-candle order. That is why a pilot batch pays for itself: if a 50-candle pilot shows your real rate is 2%, not 8%, you avoid buying for 67 candles you will never need, about ₹16,882.04 at listed prices.

The cost of rejects, and what remelting recovers

Rejects are not free just because the client never sees them. They are in your material bill.

One candle here costs ₹86.99 of Bergamot Amber at the kilo rate, ₹110.22 of wax, ₹70.80 for the jar and ₹5.90 for the wick: ₹273.91 of material. About 42 rejects therefore cost about ₹11,504.14. If you can remelt all their wax and oil cleanly, you recover up to ₹8,282.74 of that as wax you can use again; the wicks are gone, and the jars come back only if they clean up without chips or residue. Put the full reject cost into your costing, and treat anything you recover as a gain on the next order. I Have a Corporate Order for 500 × 150 g Candles in One Fragrance — How Do I Calculate the Exact Raw-Material Requirement Before Sending My Quotation? shows how to carry allowances like this into a quotation.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. A higher reject allowance sells more of everything we list. We would still rather you ran a pilot and brought the rate down. At 8% instead of 4% this order would need 46 more candles' worth of material. Spend a little on a 50-candle pilot in the production jar and wax, find your real rate, and buy for that.
Corporate Diwali gifting peaks around 8 November 2026. A 1,000-candle order at this size needs around 200 kg of wax and 17 kg of one fragrance, both well beyond the listed packs. Send us the quantities and we will confirm stock and quote, with GST invoicing and IFRA documentation if your client's procurement team needs them.

Bringing the reject rate down

The cheapest material is the material you do not have to buy for rejects. These are general practice, not CSI measurements, and each is worth testing in your own setup.

1
Run a pilot in the production jarFifty candles, same wax, same oil, same wick, same pour temperature. Count and classify every reject. This gives you a real rate and tells you what to fix.
2
Fix the wick before the runOff-centre wicks are among the most common rejects. A Wick Centering Device (₹118.00 for 5) or Steel Wick Holders (₹250.00 for 5) held in place through cooling help. Confirm the wick size with a burn test first.
3
Follow the wax maker's temperaturesPour and cure conditions affect tops and adhesion. Follow the wax maker's instructions on the product page; we do not publish a pour temperature for Chunks here.
4
Warm the jars and control the roomMany makers warm glass slightly before pouring and avoid draughts while candles set, to reduce sinkholes and jump lines. Test it on your pilot.
5
Inspect early, not at packingA wick knocked off centre can be corrected while the wax is soft. A reject found the next morning is a remelt.
6
Record the reasonsSunk top, wet spots, off-centre wick, scuffed jar. Your next order's reject rate should come from these records.
The CSI principle
Rejects are candles you pay for and cannot sell. Plan them as candles.
Divide by the pass rate, never multiply. Give every reject a full share of wax, oil, wick and jar. Count what you recover afterwards as a bonus, not as a reason to under-buy.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. Every reject you plan for is material you buy from us. This page still tells you to run a pilot and cut your reject rate, and not to assume a high one "to be safe".

Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. Wick, jar and tool prices are CSI listings verified on 10 September 2026 and re-checked in the 24–25 September pull. At 200 kg of wax and 17 kg of oil this order is beyond the listed packs; volume pricing is quoted on WhatsApp and no discount figure is published. All figures are arithmetic on listed prices, shown to two decimals.

The 4% reject rate, five QC samples, four tests, 3% pour loss, 2% jar breakage and 5% extra wicks are working assumptions. CSI publishes no reject rates, cure times or pour temperatures for Chunks. The White Matte jar's fill weight is not published; 200 g is this series' standard candle. Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate production quantity with a reject rate?
Divide the good candles you need by the pass rate and round up: good ÷ (1 − reject rate). For 1,005 good candles at 4% rejects, 1,005 ÷ 0.96 = 1,046.88, so 1,047. Then add pre-production tests and pour loss.
How much wax for 1,000 candles of 200 g?
At 8% fragrance, 184 g each, 184 kg for 1,000. With QC samples, a 4% reject rate, tests and 3% loss, 199,185.52 g.
How many wicks for 1,000 candles?
One per candle you pour, rejects included, plus a setting allowance. On this example, 1,051 poured + about 5% = 1,104 wicks.
What is a normal reject rate for candle production?
There is no published standard, and CSI does not publish one. It depends on your jar, wax, wick, room and team. Measure it on a pilot batch of about 50 in the production setup and use that figure.
Can rejected candles be remelted?
Often the wax and its fragrance can be remelted if the candle is clean. Wicks cannot be recovered and jars only sometimes. Treat remelted, already-scented wax as its own material and retest before using it in customer candles.
Does CSI sell soy wax in bags larger than 10 kg?
Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are listed up to 10 kg bags; Natural Soy Pearl Wax is listed in a 50 kg bag. For larger quantities of any wax, ask on WhatsApp for a quote. No volume discount figure is published.
