CSI Troubleshooting · Weak Hot Throw
If 10% smells like 8%, the oil quantity was never the limit. Here is what is, what the extra 2% has been costing you, and a three-candle test that tells you what to change instead.
₹15.93
extra oil per 150 g candle going from 8% to 10% with Pumpkin Spice at the 1 kg price · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Why didn't 10% smell stronger than 8%? Because the load was not what was limiting the candle. The usual limits are the melt pool (the wick decides it, and more oil does not widen it), the wax ceiling (10% is the top for Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464), and oil that the wax is not holding. Beyond a point, more oil tends to add less and less.

What did the extra 2% cost? 3 g of oil per 150 g candle, 25% more oil every time. At 1 kg prices that is ₹8.50 to ₹22.94 per candle for the seven oils on the chart, or ₹849.60 to ₹2,293.80 per 100 candles.

What should I do instead? Go back to 8% and spend on the actual limit: a wick one size up (₹94.40 for a C2 pack), a later judging day, or, if the candle sweats, a binding fix. Only then test the oil against a control.

Is the oil the problem? Not proven. A load step that changes nothing is evidence that something other than oil quantity is holding the candle back.
The short answer
Why 10% did nothing: one of five limits: the ceiling, oil not binding, an unchanged wick, an unchanged melt pool, or diminishing returns. More oil fixes none of them.
The cost of the 2%: 3 g of oil per candle; 17 fewer candles from every kilogram (83 at 8%, 66 at 10%); Pumpkin Spice at 1 kg, for example, ₹15.93 per candle and ₹1,593.00 per 100.
The test: a three-candle step-back: 10% vs 8% on your current wick, then 8% on a wick one size up. One change per comparison. New spend ₹94.40.
Never: go past the lower of the wax page's and the oil page's stated maximum. 12% in CSI 464 is over its ceiling.
What the extra 2% costs, candle by candle Oil in one 150 g candle at the 1 kg price. 8% = 12 g, 10% = 15 g: 3 g more oil, 25% more, every candle. 8% load 10% load EXTRA / CANDLE Citrus Lemon ₹2.83 per gram at 1 kg ₹33.98 ₹42.48 +₹8.50 Eucalyptus Spearmint ₹3.07 per gram at 1 kg ₹36.82 ₹46.02 +₹9.20 Roasted Coffee ₹3.74 per gram at 1 kg ₹44.86 ₹56.07 +₹11.21 Jasmine ₹3.92 per gram at 1 kg ₹47.08 ₹58.84 +₹11.77 Japanese Cherry Blossom ₹4.84 per gram at 1 kg ₹58.10 ₹72.63 +₹14.53 Pumpkin Spice ₹5.31 per gram at 1 kg ₹63.72 ₹79.65 +₹15.93 Dark Vanilla ₹7.65 per gram at 1 kg ₹91.75 ₹114.69 +₹22.94 If 10% throws no better than 8% in your candle, the right-hand column is money spent for nothing. Across 100 candles it is ₹849.60 (Citrus Lemon) to ₹2,293.80 (Dark Vanilla). One kilogram makes 83 candles at 8% but 66 at 10%: 17 fewer. CSI live pricing, verified 25 September 2026. Oil only; wax, jar, wick, labour, freight, packaging and GST excluded.
The price of the extra 2%. For seven CSI oils at their 1 kg prices, the grey bar is the oil in one 150 g candle at 8% and the black bar the same candle at 10%. The right-hand column is what the step costs every time you pour; if your 10% candle throws no better than your 8% one, that column buys you nothing.
Straight answer
I increased my fragrance oil from 8% to 10% and the hot throw did not improve. Why?
Because oil quantity was not the limit. Hot throw comes from the melt pool, and adding oil does not make the pool wider or deeper; the wick does. If you use Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, 10% is also its stated ceiling, and past what the wax holds, extra oil tends to sit on or sweat from the surface rather than throw. Beyond that, returns diminish: 10% is 25% more oil than 8%, but it is unlikely to smell 25% stronger. So step back. Pour three candles: 10% and 8% with your current wick, and 8% with a wick one size up. If 8% matches 10%, the extra 2% was wasted; if the larger wick beats both, the pool was the limit all along. New spend is ₹94.40 for a C2 wick pack. Meanwhile, go back to 8%: the 2% costs ₹15.93 per candle with Pumpkin Spice at 1 kg, ₹1,593.00 per 100 candles, for nothing you can smell.
One line: when 10% smells like 8%, the candle is telling you the bottle was never the bottleneck.
Spend the 2% on the wick instead. One pack of 10 Eco Thick (C2) wicks is ₹94.40; upgrading 100 candles from C1 to C2 in packs of 100 costs ₹354.00, less than the extra oil for 100 candles of any of the seven oils on the chart. In stock on 25 September 2026.

Five reasons more oil stopped helping

An 8% candle that smells weak and a 10% candle that smells the same are giving you one clear message: look somewhere else.

The general theory of why more oil is not always stronger is on its own page. Here we deal only with your case: a candle that was weak at 8%, was stepped to 10%, and did not move. Five things can cause that, and they often travel together.

1. You reached the ceiling

Two ceilings apply, and the lower one governs: the wax page's stated maximum and the oil page's. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states up to 10%; Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 up to 13%; other waxes do not state one in the text we hold. Most CSI oil pages that give a candle maximum give 10%. A few go higher: Japanese Cherry Blossom "6-13% for candles", Cinnamon Vanilla "Up to 13% load for candles", Autumn "7-11% for candles". In CSI 464 all three stop at 10%. At the ceiling you have used all the headroom the wax maker allows. These are formulation limits, not regulatory ones, and the ceiling is not the best-performing load; it is simply the most you should put in.

2. The wax is not holding the extra oil

Past what the wax binds, extra oil tends to sweat, pool, or leave a wet film, and oil sitting on the surface of a jar is not throwing from a hot pool. Look at the 10% candles after a week: oily beads, a greasy top, mottling, or oil in the lid. In an Indian summer, warm-cool cycling can make sweating worse. If you see these signs at 10% and not at 8%, the extra 2% is partly outside the wax. The fix is less oil, not more; sweating with weak throw is covered in depth in My Fragrance Oil Is Sweating Out of the Candle but the Hot Throw Is Still Weak — Am I Already Using Too Much?.

3. The wick did not change

You changed the fuel and kept the burner. A wick sized at 8% may be marginal at 10%, because more oil changes what the wick is drawing, and heavy or viscous oils (dense gourmand, resinous, vanilla-rich) often need a wick adjustment; both are tendencies to test, not rules. Symptoms: a smaller flame than before, mushrooming, or a pool that is slower to reach the glass at 10% than it was at 8%. How load and wick interact is on the load-and-wick page.

4. The melt pool did not change

This is the commonest reason, in our judgement. Hot throw is fragrance leaving the surface of a heated pool. If the pool stalls short of the glass at hour 4, the wax in the solid ring contributes nothing, at 8% or at 10%. Adding oil puts more fragrance into wax that is not melting. As commonly cited rules of thumb, not CSI data: a container candle's pool often reaches the glass within about 3 to 4 hours, a depth of roughly 0.5 to 1 cm is a common target, and a very rough guide is about one hour per 2.5 cm of jar width.

5. Diminishing returns, and your nose

Even in a candle whose pool, wick and wax are all fine, 10% is unlikely to smell 25% stronger than 8%. More oil does not raise throw in a straight line, and a nose judging a familiar scent in a familiar room is a poor instrument for small differences. If you compared the candles on different evenings, in different rooms or at different ages, a real but small gain may have been lost in the noise. Judge blind, same room, same age.

Argued against our own interest: we sell 25% more oil to every maker at 10% than at 8%. If your 10% candle throws no better, we would rather you went back to 8% and bought a ₹94.40 pack of wicks. The extra 2% of Dark Vanilla alone costs ₹2,293.80 per 100 candles at the 1 kg price, and it buys nothing you can smell.

Which reason is yours? Read the candle

Burn one 10% candle and one 8% candle of the same age, on separate evenings, in the same closed room, and log the pool at hours 2, 3 and 4. Then read across. This is the "is it actually the fragrance oil?" check for this case: until the pool, the wick and the binding are cleared, the oil has not had a fair test at either load.

Symptom to reason · 10% no better than 8% · tendencies, not certainties
What you see, what it usually means, and the one test that confirms it
What you see at 10% Likely reason Confirming test Fix (not more oil)
Pool short of the glass at hour 4, at both loads 4 · pool (and 3 · wick) 8% with one wick size up beats 8% with your wick Wick up: C2 ₹94.40 for 10; braided for jars over 8 cm
Smaller flame or mushrooming at 10% than at 8% 3 · wick struggling with the extra fuel 10% with one wick size up beats 10% with your wick Wick up, or back to 8%
Oily beads, wet film, mottling, oil in the lid at 10% only 2 · not binding A blotting-paper press on the top after 7 days: oily at 10%, dry at 8% Back to 8%; test Vybar as one change if you want to stay higher
Wax is CSI 464 and you went to 10%, or higher 1 · ceiling None needed: read the wax page Stay at or below 10%; test 8%
Full, deep pool at both loads; both weak; clean surface 5 · returns, or the oil itself 8% of a control oil beside 8% of yours, same wick and age If the control wins, test a replacement at 8%
Full pool, both "weak", but judged on different days or in different rooms 5 · the comparison Rejudge blind: same room, same age, one per evening Nothing yet
The blotting-paper press
After 7 days of cure, press a square of plain blotting or tissue paper flat on the unlit top of each candle for ten seconds. A translucent oily mark on the 10% candle and not on the 8% one is a practical sign that some of the extra oil is not bound. It is a rough check, not a lab measurement.

What the extra 2% cost you

Two percentage points sounds small. It is a quarter more oil in every candle you pour.

A 150 g candle at 8% holds 12 g of oil; at 10%, 15 g. The 3 g difference is 25% more oil per candle, and it shrinks what a kilogram makes from 83 candles to 66, 17 fewer. What that costs depends on the oil. Figures use each oil's 1 kg price, the lowest or equal-lowest price per gram for all seven.

Oil cost of 8% vs 10% · 150 g candle · 1 kg prices, 25 September 2026
Per candle and per 100 candles; wax, jar and wick excluded
Oil 8% (12 g) 10% (15 g) Extra per candle Extra per 100 candles
Citrus Lemon ₹33.98 ₹42.48 ₹8.50 ₹849.60
Eucalyptus Spearmint ₹36.82 ₹46.02 ₹9.20 ₹920.40
Roasted Coffee ₹44.86 ₹56.07 ₹11.21 ₹1,121.40
Jasmine ₹47.08 ₹58.84 ₹11.77 ₹1,176.90
Japanese Cherry Blossom ₹58.10 ₹72.63 ₹14.53 ₹1,452.60
Pumpkin Spice ₹63.72 ₹79.65 ₹15.93 ₹1,593.00
Dark Vanilla ₹91.75 ₹114.69 ₹22.94 ₹2,293.80

At the lower end of CSI's range, the step costs ₹8.50 a candle with Citrus Lemon, the lowest per gram at 1 kg of the oils whose pages state a candle load; at the upper end of this chart, ₹22.94 with Dark Vanilla. None of these figures include the other things a 10% candle can cost you: a wick that needs upgrading anyway, more sweating returns in summer, or a batch that pools and has to be remelted. If 10% had made the candle sell, the 2% would be an investment. If it smells like 8%, it is a leak.

Worked example for a festive run: 500 candles of Pumpkin Spice at 10% instead of 8% use 1,500 g more oil, ₹7,965.00 at the 1 kg price. That is more than one extra kilogram of oil (₹5,310.00) bought to change nothing, if your step-back shows 8% throws as well.

The three-candle step-back test

You already know 10% did not beat 8%. The step-back tells you why, with three candles and one variable per comparison. Candles A and B differ only in load; B and C differ only in wick. All are 150 g, poured on the same day from one wax melt in the same jar type, and judged at the same age.

Step-back layout · one variable per comparison

Materials: 39 g of your oil, 411 g of wax, 3 jars and 3 wicks (two of your current size, one a size up). Valued as CSI 464 at ₹0.51 per gram (₹208.54), three 150 g clear jars at ₹94.40 each (₹283.20) and wicks at pack prices (₹21.24), the three candles consume ₹512.98, excluding your own oil. New spend is ₹94.40 if you own C1 wicks and need a C2 pack; with candle D and 50 g of Lavender as the control, new spend is ₹364.40 and consumption ₹751.64. All figures exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST. The control-oil method in full is on the hub page.

1
Weigh on total weightA: 15 g of oil into 135 g of wax. B and C: 12 g into 138 g each. Use a scale; a spoon can be well out, because oils differ in density.
2
Pour all three from one meltSame add temperature from your wax page, same stir, same jar type, wicks centred. Label the bases: A, B, C and the date.
3
Day 7: blot and lookBlotting-paper press on all three. An oily mark on A only points to reason 2. Note any sweating.
4
Day 7 and 14: burn one per eveningSame closed room, fan and AC off, someone else carries them in. Log pool width and depth at hours 2, 3 and 4 and a doorway score 1 to 5 at hours 1, 2 and 3.
5
Read A against BIf A is no stronger than B, the extra 2% bought nothing. Go back to 8% in production today.
6
Read C against BIf C is stronger with a fuller pool, the wick was the limit: adopt it. If C and B are both weak with full pools, pour D at 8% against a control; only a control that clearly wins convicts your oil.

Where to spend the 2% instead

The money you save by going back to 8% can pay for the change that actually limits the candle. For 100 candles, the comparison is stark.

If the step-back points at the oil (C and B both weak with full, deep pools, and a control at 8% clearly stronger), then a replacement is justified, and you should test it at 8%, not 10%. The two oils on the cards below both state ranges that start at 6%, which suggests they are meant to work at moderate load; which structural features to look for in a moderate-load oil is covered in What Type of Fragrance Oil Gives Strong Hot Throw at 6–8%?, and whether a pricier "concentrated" oil at lower load is worth it in Should I Buy a More Concentrated Fragrance Oil Instead of Increasing Fragrance Load?. For the deeper case where 6%, 8% and 10% have all been tried and all failed, see I Increased My Fragrance Load From 6% to 8% to 10% but My Candle Is Still Weak — Should I Change the Fragrance Oil?.

What to buy

In the order the step-back usually points: a wick for jars the Eco range cannot fill, an additive for oil that is not binding, then two oils to test at 8% if the oil itself is convicted. The oils are chosen for a stated range that starts at 6%, a named base, every size in stock on 25 September 2026, and a spread of family (floral and spiced); not for any measured throw, which CSI does not have. If your jar is a standard 150 g size, start with Eco C2 wicks (₹94.40 for 10) before any of these.

1
wick · reasons 3 and 4 · for jars wider than about 8 cm
Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made
If your step-back shows a pool that will not reach the glass even with an Eco C2, the wick range, not the oil load, is your ceiling. The page says these wicks are "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm", that their braided construction is meant to prevent tunnelling, and that the wick height is 10.16 cm. Every pack size is in stock on 25 September 2026; the 500 and 1,000 packs are also listed. Who it is for: wide tumblers, bowls and three-wick-style vessels where a single eco wick stalls. Limitation: in a standard 150 g jar (the clear jar page gives an outer diameter of about 7 cm) a braided wick may be too much, so bracket it against a C2 rather than swapping blind. It does not replace a pool test.
Size Price Per unit What it covers

additive · reason 2 · only if the oil is visibly not binding
Vybar Additive For Candle Making
If your 10% candles sweat, show a wet film or mottle, some of that extra oil is not staying in the wax, and it cannot throw from the surface of a jar. The Vybar page says it "improves fragrance retention, creates smooth glossy surfaces, prevents mottling and sweating, and enhances wax hardness and burn quality", is "Compatible with soy wax, paraffin wax, and wax blends", and should be used "at 0.5%-2% of total wax weight": 0.69 g to 2.76 g in a 150 g candle's 138 g of wax. Those are the page's claims. Results vary by wax and must be tested, and in our judgement Vybar is more commonly associated with paraffin work than with soy containers. Limitation: it is a fix for binding, not for a small pool; if the step-back shows the wick is the limit, Vybar will not help. Test it as one change: two candles at 8%, with and without.
Size Price Per gram What it covers
50g ₹156.00 ₹3.12 36 candles at 1% of 138 g of wax
100g ₹312.00 ₹3.12 72 candles at 1% of 138 g of wax
At 1% (1.38 g of Vybar per candle) it adds ₹4.31 per candle at the 50 g price. Buy Vybar 50 g — ₹156.00

floral · replacement to test at 8% · a range that starts at 6%
Japanese Cherry Blossom Fragrance Oil
A floral whose page is written for a range of loads: "6-13% for candles". Read that carefully. The top of that range is above the 10% ceiling of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, so in CSI 464 your maximum is 10%, whatever the oil page allows; in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks or CSI 468 (up to 13%) the two ceilings agree at 13%, but the maximum is still not the best load. The bottom of the range, 6%, is the useful part here: it suggests the oil is meant to work at moderate load, which is where you want to be after an 8%-to-10% step failed. Notes: "sweet cherry and soft pink petals opening into a rose and jasmine heart, grounded by warm sandalwood and musk". Limitation: the page states no cure time in the text we hold, so judge at day 14; and a named sandalwood-and-musk base is a reason to test, not a promise of throw.

spiced gourmand · replacement to test at 8% · festive
Pumpkin Spice
The festive candidate. The page states "Recommended fragrance load is 6-10% for candles and 8-12% for wax melts" (the 8-12% is for melts, not candles) and lists a full pyramid: "Top Notes: Fresh Pumpkin, Ginger, Cinnamon Bark Middle Notes: Nutmeg, Clove, Allspice Base Notes: Vanilla Bean, Caramelized Sugar, Cedarwood". It describes its own strength as "Medium to Strong", which is the page's wording, not a CSI measurement, and it tells you to "Use a lower percentage for a subtle autumn backdrop or increase for a more prominent pumpkin pie aroma": the page's own reminder that load is a style choice, not only a strength dial. Limitations: no cure stated, so judge at day 14; vanilla in the base with no vanillin figure, so watch colour in pale wax. One price fact worth knowing: the 1 kg is 10.0% cheaper per gram than the 500 g, so two 500 g packs cost ₹590.00 more than the kilogram.
Size Price Per gram 150 g candles at 8%
15 gm ₹106.20 ₹7.08 1
50 gm ₹330.40 ₹6.61 4
100 gm ₹590.00 ₹5.90 8
500 gm ₹2,950.00 ₹5.90 41
1 kg ₹5,310.00 ₹5.31 83
Oil per candle at 1 kg: ₹63.72 at 8%, ₹79.65 at 10%; the extra 2% is ₹15.93 a candle. Buy Pumpkin Spice 50 g
When the right purchase is nothing: if the step-back shows A and B the same and C no better, and your surface is dry, go back to 8% and judge at day 14 in a small closed room. That costs nothing and may be the whole answer. We sell the 1 kg; do not buy a replacement kilogram until a 50 g of it has beaten a control at 8% in your own candle.

Festive production at 8%

Diwali falls on 8 November 2026 and Christmas on 25 December 2026. If you were planning a festive run at 10% because 8% felt weak, the step-back takes 14 days; pour it this week and you will know by mid-October whether the run can go at 8% with a better wick. Every kilogram at 8% makes 83 candles instead of 66. Confirm dispatch times on WhatsApp before you promise a customer a date.

Festive run at 8%: step-back poured by early October, verdict by mid-October, production at 8% with the winning wick. For 500 Pumpkin Spice candles, 8% instead of 10% saves ₹7,965.00 of oil. Ask for a 1 kg and wick-pack quote with GST invoice.

The CSI principle
When more oil changes nothing, the oil was not the limit.
Step back to the load that throws as well, and spend the difference on the wick, the pool or the binding that is really holding the candle back.
"The cheapest 2% of fragrance oil is the 2% you stop pouring into a candle that could not use it."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the oil you would save by going back to 8%, and the page tells you to save it. We would rather sell a ₹94.40 pack of wicks that fixes the candle than a kilogram of oil that does not.

Every price and per-gram figure was verified on CSI's live store on 25 September 2026; every size on the pick cards is in stock on that date, and any that was not would be flagged as out of stock. Wax ceilings, oil ranges, notes and the Vybar wording are quoted from product pages and are those pages' claims.

The five reasons, the symptom table, the blotting-paper press and the step-back design are editorial judgement; CSI has no measured throw data for any oil, and the melt-pool benchmarks are commonly cited rules of thumb. Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't more fragrance oil make my candle smell stronger?
Because something else is usually the limit: a melt pool that does not reach the glass, a wick not sized for the extra oil, a wax already at its ceiling, or oil the wax is not holding. More oil does not raise throw in a straight line.
Is 10% fragrance oil too much for soy wax?
It depends on the wax page. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states up to 10%, so 10% is its ceiling; Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and CSI 468 state up to 13%. The lower of the wax and oil page maximums governs, and the maximum is not always the best load.
How much does going from 8% to 10% fragrance load cost?
3 g more oil per 150 g candle. At 1 kg prices that is ₹8.50 (Citrus Lemon) to ₹22.94 (Dark Vanilla) per candle, ₹849.60 to ₹2,293.80 per 100 candles, and 17 fewer candles per kilogram.
Do I need a bigger wick if I increase fragrance load?
Often, especially with heavy or vanilla-rich oils, but test rather than assume: pour 8% and 10% with your wick and one size up, and compare the pool at hours 2 to 4.
My candle sweats at 10% but not at 8%. What does that mean?
Some of the extra oil is probably not binding to the wax. Go back to 8%. If you want to stay higher, the Vybar page says it "prevents mottling and sweating" at 0.5%–2% of wax weight; that is the page's claim, so test it as one change.
Should I change my fragrance oil if 10% did not help?
Not yet. First check whether a larger wick fixes the 8% candle. Only if the pool is full and deep and a control oil at 8% clearly beats yours is the oil the problem; then test a replacement at 8%, 50 g first.
10% did not help
Step back to 8%, test the wick: ₹94.40.
Three candles, one variable per comparison, 14 days. You will know whether the extra 2% ever did anything, whether the pool was the limit, and whether the oil deserves the blame, before you pour another 3 g into every candle.

About this guide: the 8%-to-10% page of CSI's weak-hot-throw cluster: five reasons a load increase stops helping, a symptom table, the ₹ cost of the extra 2% per candle and per 100 candles, a three-candle step-back test and where to spend the money instead. Non-price figures: candle maths assume a 150 g candle with load as a percentage of total weight (8% = 12 g oil + 138 g wax; 10% = 15 g + 135 g); candles per kilogram are floor(1000 ÷ grams per candle). Wax ceilings are as stated on the wax pages (formulation limits, not regulatory limits). Vybar amounts use the page's "0.5%-2% of total wax weight" applied to 138 g of wax. Melt-pool benchmarks are commonly cited rules of thumb; the blotting-paper press is a practical check, not a measurement. The festive-run figures are worked examples. Costs exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST.
