I’m Choosing a Wick for a 7 cm Soy Candle — How Many Adjacent Wick Sizes Should I Test Before Selecting One for Commercial Production?
Aktie
Is three candles per size really necessary? For a production decision, yes. One candle can be a bad pour; three let a rung "fail" only when two of three fail the same way, and let the chosen wick pass only when all three pass through full life.
What if no size passes? Add a fourth arm, two C1 wicks in one jar, three candles, but only when neither neighbour closes the bracket around a passing wick. Otherwise, don't.
Honestly, how many sizes does CSI have? Few. The stepped, tabbed range is C1, C2 and Cotton Braided, whose page describes it for candles "exceeding 8 cm" (plus one wooden wick with no sizes to step between). At 7 cm, "adjacent sizes" may mean every one of them.
What "closing the bracket" means
Many makers stop testing at the first wick that passes. That answers "does this work in my candle today?" and leaves the production question open: is this wick in the middle of its window, or one hot day, one thicker wick batch or one slightly narrower jar away from failing? The bracket-closure rule answers it with evidence you can point to:
| Condition | Evidence needed | When it usually shows |
|---|---|---|
| The chosen wick passes | All three candles pass, burned to about 1 cm left | Only at the end of full life (the full-life calendar) |
| The size below fails under | Two of three candles: a ring that persists or widens by burn 3, a pool that stays shallow, a quiet, short flame | Often by burn 3; the catch-up rule is in the cluster hub |
| The size above fails over | Two of three candles: trimmed flame past your line (many makers use about 5 cm as the top of a 2.5–5 cm range), pool past about 1 cm, soot, carbon caps, a flame near the glass | Sometimes early (a very fast pool with a big flame), often only low in the jar |
The flanks don't have to go to full life once they have failed clearly: two of three candles failing the same way is enough, and you can stop burning that rung. That saves days, not candles, because all nine are poured together. The chosen wick is the only rung that must go all the way down.
How to pick the first three sizes to try when you have no idea where to start is a different question, answered in choosing the first three wicks for a 3-inch jar. This page starts after that: you have a candidate and want to know how many neighbours must fail before you trust it.
CSI's rungs at 7 cm, honestly
Wick makers who sell long numbered series let you bracket in small steps. CSI does not. Here is every CSI wick that could sit in a 7 cm single-wick bracket, in order, with what each page actually says:
| Wick | What the page says | Tabbed and sized? | Role in a 7 cm bracket |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eco Candle Wicks Loose | "designed specifically for 2 inch diameters" (5.08 cm) | Sold by the metre; no tabs mentioned | Not a rung here; at most a labelled lower probe with your own tabs |
| Eco C1 (Thin) | No size or jar range | Yes | The smallest tabbed rung: the lower flank, or the answer |
| Eco C2 (Thick) | No size or jar range | Yes | The usual middle |
| Cotton Braided Ready Made | "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm" | Yes, 10.16 cm tall | The over probe: 8 cm is about 27% wider than a 6.3 cm inside |
| Braided Wick Roll with 100 wick tabs | Cut to length, tabs included | Tabbed by you; no size stated | A different construction, not a step between C1 and C2 |
| Performance Wooden Wicks | One listing, no widths | Yes, one size | Its own bracket; no size to step up or down to |
So a three-rung bracket of C1, C2 and Cotton Braided is the whole of CSI's stepped, tabbed range. There is no sized, tabbed wick between C1 and C2, and no smaller sized, tabbed wick than C1. That is the honest answer to "how many adjacent sizes": at 7 cm, with CSI, all of them. If your closed bracket needs a finer step than that, CSI cannot give it to you, and the in-between options post lays out what can.
Why three candles per rung
Wick behaviour varies from candle to candle even when you do everything the same: a wick sets a millimetre off-centre, a jar is a little thinner, one candle sits nearer a door. With one candle per rung, any of that can decide your production wick. With two, a split (one pass, one fail) tells you nothing. With three, a majority is possible, and a rung can be failed on two of three while the chosen wick is held to three of three.
| Candles per rung | Candles for C1, C2, CB | What a result means |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 3 | A screen at best; one bad pour decides |
| 2 | 6 | Agreement is useful; a 1–1 split is a stalemate |
| 3 | 9 | A 2–1 majority fails a flank; 3–0 passes the chosen wick |
| 4 or more | 12+ | More confidence, more jars; worth it for a hero product, not for every scent |
If a cell splits 2–1 in a way that matters (the chosen wick has one failing candle), pour three more of that rung only. One extra C2 candle costs ₹216.34 in materials. Fragrance matters too: this bracket is for one oil at one load. Whether every oil needs its own full bracket is the sizes-per-fragrance calculator; the answer for a whole range is rarely "yes".
Running the bracket, step by step
Reading the nine candles
| C1 | C2 | CB | Reading | Next step |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| U | P | O | C2 closed on both sides | C2 to full life (its three candles continue); then production |
| P | O | not needed | C1 closed above, open at the floor: CSI lists nothing sized and tabbed below | Record "floor-bounded"; C1 to full life; if you need the lower flank, test another supplier's smaller wick as a labelled arm |
| U | P | P | C2 closed below, open above | Take C2, the smaller passing wick, to full life; re-check Cotton Braided's pass through full life before believing it at 7 cm |
| U | U | O | No single rung passes; the answer sits between C2 and Cotton Braided | The fourth arm: 2 × C1, three candles |
| U | O | not needed | The answer sits between C1 and C2, where CSI has no sized wick | Look at load, fill height and session length; ask us; a fourth arm is a long shot here |
| 2–1 splits in the chosen cell | Not decided | Three more candles of that rung only |
Two cautions. An over fail that only shows low in the jar takes a full life to see; if you want an early read on whether Cotton Braided or C2 overheats at the bottom, bottom-zone shortcut candles can screen that zone in a session. And the "U" on C1 must be a real under fail, with a centred wick, still air and sessions long enough (about 3 hours for 7 cm), not a first-burn ring that would have caught up.
The fourth arm: two C1 wicks, and when not to pour it
When C2 is under and Cotton Braided is over, no single CSI wick passes in between. The only other way to add heat in steps with CSI wicks is to change the construction: two C1 wicks in one jar. Two flames commonly deliver more heat than one C1 and spread it wider; whether a pair of C1s lands between C2 and Cotton Braided in your candle is exactly what the arm tests. CSI publishes no data on how these constructions compare, so don't assume the order: let three candles show it.
Geometry first, as a starting point for testing, not a rule. On a 6.3 cm inside the pool is 31.17 cm²; two wicks share it at about 15.59 cm² each. Placed 2.4 cm apart on a diameter, each wick sits 1.95 cm from the nearest wall. The Steel Wick Holder's holes sit in a line and its page gives no spacing in the text we captured, so measure its holes and choose the pair that is closest to your starting spacing. Pour three 2 × C1 candles alongside a fresh C2 control if the first round was poured more than a couple of weeks earlier.
| Situation | Fourth arm? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| C2 under, Cotton Braided over | Yes | The gap sits where a pair of C1s may land |
| C1 under, C2 over | Only as a long shot | Two C1 flames commonly add more heat than one; landing below C2 is uncertain |
| A single rung already passes between an under and an over | No | The bracket is closed; a fourth arm buys wicks, not information |
| C1 passes, floor-bounded | No | 2 × C1 can only be hotter than C1; it can't close the floor |
If 2 × C1 passes, you have a double-wick 7 cm product, with two wicks to trim and centre in every candle; decide whether that suits your production before you celebrate. Double-wick geometry in wider jars is covered in the 9 cm cluster of this series; at 7 cm, keep it simple.

| Eucalyptus Spearmint | 100 g ₹354.00 + 15 g ₹68.44 | 108 g (7 g left) | ₹390.50 |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 1 kg ₹507.40 + 500 g ₹260.00 | 1,242 g (258 g left) | ₹633.24 |

| Bracket, materials consumed | Cash from nothing: ₹2,466.24 | 9 candles | ₹1,955.36 |
Per candle, a C1 candle costs about ₹212.80 and a Cotton Braided candle ₹218.90 (oil at the 100 g price); the wicks are 4% of the whole bracket. The fourth arm, if needed, adds three candles: 36 g of oil and 414 g of wax, three more jars, six C1 and three steel holders, ₹839.01 in materials and holders, and ₹1,666.40 in top-up cash (a 50 g oil bottle, a 500 g wax bag, another jar 10-pack and a holder pack; the C1 20-pack already has spares). Costs are worked examples and exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST.
Days. All nine candles are poured together, cured together (the oil page says 48–72 hours for soy; many makers wait about a week) and burned in the same sessions. Under fails usually show by burn 3; clear over fails can show early; the chosen wick needs its full life, about two weeks from pour on one session a day. A fourth arm adds another full cycle. Diwali is 40 days from 29 September 2026: one bracket fits comfortably; a bracket plus a fourth arm fits if you pour this week.

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wicks, jars, holders, oil and wax named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page still says plainly that our wick range is short, that a maker needing finer steps should look at a longer numbered series, and that big wick packs save nothing per wick.
Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 29 September 2026. Stock was checked per size: the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock on that date and flagged wherever it appears; every other size shown is in stock. Wick, jar, holder, load and cure wording is quoted from the product pages; where a page is silent in the text we captured, we say so.
The bracket-closure rule, the two-of-three and three-of-three thresholds, the fourth-arm conditions and the 2.4 cm starting spacing are our judgement; the verdict matrix is a worked example; flame and depth lines are commonly cited rules of thumb.
