At 10%, a thousand 200 g candles hold twenty kilos of fragrance. That is the number to have in the building, not on order.

CSI's convention puts the load on the finished candle: oil = 200 g × 10% = 20 g per candle, wax = 180 g. A thousand candles are 20 kg of oil and 180 kg of wax net. The allowances — 10 whole test candles, a 3% reject allowance and 3% pour loss on wax and oil, all labelled working assumptions — lift the oil to 21.45 kg. That is the quantity this page means by "available before production begins": every gram the run will pour, including the candles that will fail.

Which wax can carry 10% — and the weighing problem at a ceiling

Only three CSI waxes publish a fragrance ceiling, and 10% sits differently in each. CSI 468's page states up to 13%, as does Luxury Soy Wax Chunks's — so 10% leaves three points of headroom. CSI 464's page states up to 10%, so a 10% candle is at its ceiling. Natural Soy Pearl publishes no ceiling at all. These are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums, not targets, not optimums and not regulatory limits; a ceiling tells you where not to go, not where to aim.

At a ceiling, the weighing tolerance becomes part of the formula.

Running exactly at a ceiling has a practical cost that a recipe card hides: any over-pour of oil puts the candle over the stated limit. If your scale or your process lets a little extra oil into each batch, the true load creeps above 10%. The table shows how small that drift has to be.

That is why the worked order on this page uses CSI 468: not because it performs better — CSI publishes no throw data for any wax — but because a 10% formula inside a 13% ceiling tolerates normal weighing drift, and its page also states a melting point (50–53°C) and pour temperature (58–60°C) a team can follow. If you pour CSI 464 at 10%, weigh oil per batch rather than per candle, check your scale against a known weight, and treat any batch where the oil is over as a batch to correct, not to pour. Or run CSI 464 at 9.5% and accept the slightly smaller oil figure.

The mistake: "10% oil means 10% of the wax." 10% of 180 kg of wax is 18 kg, a true load of 9.09%; 10% of 200 kg of wax is 20 kg poured into 220 kg of candle — 220 g per jar. Fix: oil = finished weight × 10% = 20 g; wax = 180 g. If a recipe is written per kilo of wax, oil = wax × 0.10 ÷ 0.90 = 111.11 g per kilo. The overfilling post covers this at 100 candles.

All on hand, or staged? Why the oil should be in the building

You could buy the oil week by week as production runs. At an example four production weeks that is about 5.31 kg a week (5 × 1 kg + 3 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g, ₹41,010.00 each week), with 5.52 kg needed before the first production week once the trial is included. It spreads the cash. For a 1,000-candle order with a delivery date, it is usually the wrong trade, for three reasons.

Staging also costs a little more here — ₹1,374.00 — because each weekly order rounds up on its own. That is the general rule for oils on CSI's listing: per-gram prices are close to linear above 100 g for most oils (Dark Vanilla is ₹7.65 a gram at 1 kg against ₹7.90 at 100 g), so the only saving available is in rounding fewer times. Label every bottle the day it arrives
Order date, bottle number (1 of 21, 2 of 21…) and the oil name, in marker on the cap and the label. Pour the trial from bottle 1 and keep 50–100 g of it sealed as a retained sample. What CSI's product pages state (quoted, not CSI test results): Luxury Soy Wax Chunks — maximum fragrance load 13%, cure minimum 48 hours, ideally 1–2 weeks; Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 — fragrance load up to 10%; Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 — fragrance load up to 13%, melting point 50–53°C, pour 58–60°C; Natural Soy Pearl — no fragrance ceiling, temperatures or shelf life published. The 10 test candles, 3% rejects, 3% pour loss, 2% breakage, the four-week staging plan and the weighing-drift examples are labelled working assumptions.
