I Need 1,000 Candles and Each Uses One Wick — Should I Order Exactly 1,000 Wicks or Keep Additional Pieces for Testing, Defects and Production Mistakes?

Where the extra wicks go

Wax is forgiving: a failed candle can be melted down and poured again. A wick is not. Once it has been stuck to a jar and pulled off, set in wax and cut out, or burned in a test, it is gone. That is why wick counts drift away from candle counts on every real run, even when the candle count is exact. The table lists the five places they go, with the working allowance we use for a first 1,000-candle run in a new jar.

Two of the five lines are fixed numbers, not percentages. Burn tests do not scale with the order: ten test wicks cover a sensible test whether the run is 200 or 2,000. QC and retained candles scale only loosely; one per 200 is a working figure for a run where every candle is the same. The other three lines scale with the run because they are error rates: out of every hundred wicks set by hand, one or two will need replacing, however careful the team.

The remelt line is the one most people forget. A candle that sets with a sinkhole, a crooked wick or a cracked top can be recovered: melt out the wax, clean the jar, pour again. The wax goes back in the pot. The wick does not come back, and neither does its sticker. Wastage on larger orders covers how remelts affect the wax side of the budget.

Sizing the allowance to your run

Five percent is not a rule. It is a sensible first-run figure. The right allowance depends on how well you know the wick, the jar and the team. Three typical cases for 1,000 single-wick candles:

Across the three cases the wick bill runs from ₹6,077.00 to ₹6,372.00, a difference of ₹295.00. On a 1,000-candle run, that is small against almost any other line. The cheap way to sharpen the allowance is to count: on this run, keep a tally of every wick that does not end up in a sold candle and why. Next time you can size each line from your own rate instead of ours.

Rounding to real wick packs

Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 come in 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1,000, all at ₹5.90 a wick. Thick C2 comes in 10, 20, 100 and 1,000 at ₹9.44. Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made come in 10, 50, 100, 500 and 1,000 at ₹12.00. So you never save by buying a bigger pack; you only choose the packs that land closest to your count. For 1,050 wicks:

Choosing the wick type moves the bill far more than the allowance does. Thick C2 costs ₹3,717.00 more than Thin C1 for the same 1,050 wicks, and Cotton Braided ₹6,405.00 more. Neither is "better" in general; which wick your jar needs depends on its diameter, your wax and your load, and CSI does not publish wick sizes per diameter. Choose by burn test, then round. Test before you stock

The allowance above protects a run where the wick is right. It does nothing if the wick is wrong. The expensive wick mistake is not running short; it is committing ₹5,900.00 to a thousand wicks that tunnel in your jar, or ₹9,440.00 to a thousand that flicker and soot. So the order has two stages whenever the wick is new to the jar.

What a shortfall really costs

It helps to put the spare wick next to what it protects. A 200 g candle at 8% in a White Matte jar carries about ₹270.45 of materials: 184 g of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (₹110.22), 16 g of Lavender at its kilo rate (₹83.54), the jar (₹70.80) and the wick (₹5.90). The wick is 2.2% of that. When wicks run out, those other materials do not go bad, but they sit poured-out-of-order or unpoured while you wait, and the part that does cost money — a second delivery, a missed dispatch slot, a pourer standing idle — is not something we can price for you. Put your own example figures against it: a courier charge, an hour of labour, a late-delivery penalty on a corporate contract. In almost every real case, one of those is larger than the whole 50-wick allowance.

The same logic applies in reverse to wax and fragrance, where an allowance costs real money and is worth trimming carefully. Ordering wax and oil for 250 tested jars and converting 200 ml jars into a wax order show those allowances. For wicks, the cheap line on the sheet protects the expensive ones.

The rest of the wick kit

Wicks rarely go into jars alone. Two accessories scale with the wick count, and two do not. Getting that distinction right stops a surprise at the packing stage.

Stickers are the surprise. At 40 for ₹100.00 they cost ₹2.50 each, which is about 42% of the price of a Thin C1 wick. For 1,050 wicks you need 27 packs, ₹2,700.00, and they go in the same allowance maths: a lifted tab loses its sticker too. Centring tools are different. They are reused tray after tray, so buy enough for one tray's worth of jars, not one per candle; the tray size in the table is an example to replace with yours. When the run is done, count what is left. If you finish with 40 of the 50 spares untouched, your error rate is lower than our working figure and the next order can carry a smaller allowance. If you finish with none, and a few candles were poured with the last wick in the bag, raise the allowance or find out which line ran over. The tally sheet is the thing that makes the next wick order exact.
