Production calculator · Scented mould candles
A scented mould candle is poured heavier than it is sold. The base is levelled, the seam is shaved and the wick end is cleaned up. Everything that comes off carries fragrance oil at the full load. On a thousand candles, the trimmings alone take about 492.48 g of oil.

fragrance oil for 1,000 finished 180 g mould candles at an 8% labelled test load (186 g poured, 2% failed releases, 5 tests, 3% pour loss) · with 1,80,836.19 g of Soy Pillar Wax · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How do I calculate fragrance when mould candles lose weight in trimming? Apply the load to the poured weight, not the finished weight. The trimmings carry oil at the same load. A 180 g candle that loses 6 g was poured at 186 g: 14.88 g of oil at 8%, of which 0.48 g leaves with the trimmings.

How much oil and wax for 1,000 candles? With 2% failed releases, 5 tests and 3% pour loss (working assumptions): 15,724.89 g of oil and 1,80,836.19 g of wax. That is 1,026 pours of 186 g, plus the loss.

Does trimming change the fragrance load of the finished candle? No. The wax and oil are mixed evenly, so the finished candle is still at 8%. What changes is the quantity of oil you need to buy, because the trimmed part was scented too.

What load can pillar wax take? CSI publishes no fragrance ceiling for Soy Pillar Wax. Check the product page or ask on WhatsApp for the wax maker's stated maximum. This page uses 8% as a labelled test load and shows 6% and 10% for sensitivity.
The short answer
Rule: Poured weight = finished + trimmed. Oil = poured × load × pours × (1 + loss). Wax = the rest. The finished candle stays at the same load.
Per candle: Poured 186 g at 8% = 14.88 g oil + 171.12 g wax. Finished 180 g keeps 14.40 g oil; the 6 g trim takes 0.48 g.
Priced: Cinnamon 15 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g + 2 × 100 g + 2 × 15 g: ₹83,992.40. Soy Pillar Wax 18 × 10 kg + 1 × 1 kg: ₹1,08,600.00. With 90% of trim remelted: 15,281.65 g oil. Unscented version has no oil to lose.
The trimmed-off slice is scented too — one candle, then 1,000 poured 186 g finished 180 g 14.40 g oil shaded base = trim 6 g → 0.48 g oil (drawn ×3) Fragrance oil to order for 1,000 candles at 8% 14,400 g · finished weight only 15,217.63 g · allowances, trim ignored 15,724.89 g · poured weight + allowances 15,281.65 g · with 90% of trim remelted Trim, failures, tests, loss and load are labelled assumptions
Left: one candle, poured at 186 g and trimmed to 180 g. The trim slice is drawn three times its real height so that it is visible. It carries oil at the same 8% as the rest. Right: the oil order under four methods. Planning on finished weight alone under-buys by 1,324.89 g. Ignoring the trimming but keeping the other allowances still under-buys by 507.25 g.
Straight answer
I need 1,000 fragranced mould candles. How do I calculate wax and fragrance when each candle loses a small amount during trimming and finishing?
Base the calculation on the poured weight. If a candle is sold at 180 g and you trim 6 g from the base, seam and wick end, you poured 186 g. The oil is mixed evenly, so the trimmings carry it at the full load. At an 8% labelled test load, each pour takes 14.88 g of oil and 171.12 g of wax. The finished candle keeps 14.40 g of oil and is still at 8%, and 0.48 g leaves with the trim. Then add the usual allowances, set here as working assumptions: 2% failed releases (1,021 production pours), 5 test pours (1,026 in all) and 3% pour loss. The order is 15,724.89 g of fragrance oil and 1,80,836.19 g of Soy Pillar Wax. If you plan on the finished weight and forget the trim, you under-buy oil by 507.25 g, and the run stops short. If you remelt clean trimmings into later batches, the need falls to 15,281.65 g of oil. CSI publishes no fragrance ceiling for pillar wax, so check the product page and test before the run. At this volume one oil runs past the listed 1 kg bottles, so ask on WhatsApp for a bulk quote.
One line: the load stays at 8% in the candle; the oil bill is 8% of everything you pour, trimmings included.
For a Diwali mould range, Cinnamon Fragrance Oil is one of the oils where the kilo is really cheaper: ₹5,310.00 a kilo, 10.0% less per gram than the 100 g. At 14.88 g a pour, a kilo covers 67.2 poured candles. Test in 15 g (₹106.20) before committing to a thousand.

Poured weight vs finished weight

Jar candles are sold at the weight you pour. Mould candles are sold at the weight left after the knife.

Most mould candles are finished by hand. The base is levelled so the candle stands straight, the mould seam is shaved, and the wick end is cleaned and trimmed. Each step removes a few grams of scented wax. In our example it is 6 g from a 180 g candle, a labelled working figure. Weigh your own before and after trimming. The customer's candle weighs 180 g, and 186 g went into the mould. The question is which weight to multiply.

One candle · 186 g poured · 6 g trimmed · 8% labelled test load · oil mixed evenly through the batch
Where the oil in one pour ends up
Part Weight Fragrance oil Wax Load
Poured into the mould 186 g 14.88 g 171.12 g 8%
Trimmed off (base, seam, wick end) 6 g 0.48 g 5.52 g 8%
Finished candle 180 g 14.40 g 165.60 g 8%
Across 1,000 good candles, trim only 6,000 g 480 g 5,520 g —

The load is the same in every row, because trimming removes a slice of an evenly mixed candle. It does not strip out oil selectively. So there is nothing wrong with the finished candle's fragrance. What goes wrong is the purchase. 0.48 g a candle sounds like nothing, but across 1,026 pours it is 492.48 g of fragrance oil, about ₹2,615.07 of Cinnamon at the kilo rate, all of it in a bin of shavings. The same logic holds for any mould candle with finishing loss, whatever the shape. My Silicone Mould Holds 240 g of Water — How Do I Estimate How Much Pillar Wax Is Required for Each Finished Candle? shows how the trim appears in a single weighed test pour.

Weigh the trim once, on ten candles
Weigh ten candles straight from the mould, trim them as you would for sale, and weigh them again. The average difference is your trim figure. Record it per design, because a flat-based pillar loses less than a flower whose petals need cleaning. I'm Producing Several Different Mould Candle Designs — How Do I Calculate the Combined Wax Requirement When Every Mould Has a Different Fill Weight? uses per-design trim and failure figures in a combined order.

Building the 1,000-candle order

With the per-pour figure settled, the order follows the usual steps, in the usual sequence. Failed releases and test pours are counted in candles. The pour weight includes the trim. Pour loss comes last. All three rates are labelled working assumptions.

1
Per pour: finished + trim180 g + 6 g = 186 g. This is the weight that goes into the mould every time.
2
Pours for 1,000 good candles1,000 ÷ (1 − 0.02) = 1020.41 → 1,021 production pours (21 failed releases). A failed release is trimmed or remelted like any other, so it is a full pour.
3
Add test pours+ 5 = 1,026 pours: first release, trim weighing, burn test, scent check and a retained sample.
4
Scented batch with pour loss1,026 × 186 g × 1.03 = 1,96,561.08 g of scented wax to melt over the run.
5
Split at the load× 0.08 = 15,724.89 g oil; × 0.92 = 1,80,836.19 g wax. Then round each to real packs.
Same 1,000 candles · 8% labelled test load · Cinnamon oil and Soy Pillar Wax, CSI live pricing 24 September 2026
Three ways to plan the same order
Method Oil Wax Oil short vs correct What happens
Finished weight only (1,000 × 180 g) 14,400 g 1,65,600 g 1,324.89 g The oil runs out around candle 915
Allowances, but trim ignored 15,217.63 g 1,75,002.77 g 507.25 g Short by about 34 pours' worth of oil
Poured weight + allowances 15,724.89 g 1,80,836.19 g — Covers 1,000 good candles
The half-kilo you only miss at the end. The second row is the common mistake among experienced makers. They add allowances for failures and loss but plan on the 180 g they sell. It feels thorough. The trim, though, is not in any of those allowances. It happens on every candle, good or bad, and it takes 507.25 g of oil with it. That shortfall shows up after about 992 pours, as a batch you cannot finish at the right load. Some makers then top it up with a different oil or pour the last batch at a lower load. Either way the last candles do not match the first.
The finished candle is correct at 8%. The purchase order is what goes wrong, by 8% of every gram you trim.

Scented trimmings: remelt or write off

Clean trimmings are a scented, correctly loaded batch of wax. Remelting them into the next pour is common practice, and it recovers most of the oil and wax. Keep them clean and sorted by scent and colour, and add them to a batch of the same formula. Test that the remelted batch still meets your scent standard, because reheating can dull some fragrances, and we have no measured figure for that. Here are both plans. We take 90% of the trim as recoverable, a labelled assumption for dust, floor drops and the last batch's trim, which has nowhere to go.

1,026 pours · 8% labelled test load · Cinnamon oil, Soy Pillar Wax · CSI live pricing 24 September 2026
Trim written off vs trim remelted
Plan Scented wax Oil Oil packs Oil cost Wax Wax cost
Trim written off 1,96,561.08 g 15,724.89 g 15 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g + 2 × 100 g + 2 × 15 g ₹83,992.40 1,80,836.19 g ₹1,08,600.00
90% of trim remelted 1,91,020.68 g 15,281.65 g 15 × 1 kg + 3 × 100 g ₹81,420.00 1,75,739.03 g ₹1,05,600.00
Saving 5,540.40 g 443.23 g — ₹2,572.40 5,097.17 g ₹3,000.00

Remelting saves about ₹5,572.40 on this run, oil and wax together. That is worth a clean bin by the trimming bench. For a first run of a new design, though, buy on the written-off plan. You do not yet know how clean your trimmings will be, or whether the remelt passes your scent check. Use the recovered wax to cut the next order, not this one. Coloured trimmings go back only into the same colour, and multi-scent ranges need one bin per scent.

Load sensitivity with no published ceiling

CSI publishes no fragrance ceiling for Soy Pillar Wax. That is the product's own figure to check, on the product page or by asking on WhatsApp. Freestanding candles have no jar to hold seeping oil, so a load that works in a container can show as a greasy surface on a pillar. Test before you scale. Here is the same order at three labelled test loads:

1,026 pours of 186 g · 3% pour loss · Cinnamon oil, Soy Pillar Wax · labelled test loads, not specifications
The 1,000-candle order at 6%, 8% and 10%
Load Oil in finished candle Oil in each trim Oil to order Oil cost Wax to order Wax cost
6% 10.80 g 0.36 g 11,793.66 g ₹63,130.00 1,84,767.42 g ₹1,11,000.00
8% 14.40 g 0.48 g 15,724.89 g ₹83,992.40 1,80,836.19 g ₹1,08,600.00
10% 18 g 0.60 g 19,656.11 g ₹1,04,866.60 1,76,904.97 g ₹1,06,200.00

Each two-point step moves the oil by about 3.9 kg and the oil bill by about ₹21,000 at Cinnamon's listed prices. The wax moves the other way, but at ₹0.60 a gram it barely registers. In a scented mould-candle order, load is the biggest cost decision. Set it by testing, not by the highest figure a forum mentions. The trim scales with the load too: at 10%, each 6 g trim carries 0.6 g of oil.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. A thousand candles at 10% would sell us about 3.9 kg more oil than at 8%. We do not know that your pillars need it, and nor do you until you have burned both. Pour ten candles at 6%, ten at 8%, cure them and compare them in a real room. Buy for the load that wins. And note that for this oil, the 1 kg bottle is where the per-gram saving stops. A 15,724.89 g order is 15 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g + 2 × 100 g + 2 × 15 g at listed prices. Anything beyond that is a WhatsApp quote, and no discount figure is published.

With Sandalwood instead, the oil line is 15 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g + 2 × 100 g + 2 × 15 g for ₹79,107.20. At 15 kilo bottles of one oil, this order is well past the point where a WhatsApp quote makes sense. Ask about supply in larger units and whether the whole quantity can come from one batch. A consistent scent across 1,000 candles matters more than a few rupees. Ask for the IFRA certificate and MSDS at the same time: no per-oil IFRA figure is published in our data. Wick size per mould is not published, and the 12 cm per pour is a labelled working length. Moulds, packaging, labour and freight are extra.

The CSI principle
Load the candle on its finished weight. Buy the oil on its poured weight.
Trimming does not change the candle's fragrance load, but it does change how much oil you use. Multiply the poured weight by the pours, add loss, then split. The half-kilo in the trim bin is then planned for rather than discovered.
Diwali is on 8 November 2026. A thousand scented mould candles need their oil in hand early enough to pour, trim, cure and pack. Send us your finished weight, trim figure, load and count. We will quote oil and pillar wax together, with GST invoicing and IFRA documentation, on WhatsApp.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. This page shows how to buy less oil by remelting clean trimmings, and it argues against a higher load until you have burned both. It also states plainly that no fragrance ceiling is published for our pillar wax.

Oil, wax and wick-roll prices are CSI live pricing pulled on 24–25 September 2026. Out-of-stock sizes are marked, never offered. The 180 g finished weight is the reader's figure. The 6 g trim, 2% failed releases, 5 test pours, 3% pour loss, 90% remelt recovery and 12 cm of wick are labelled working assumptions. Every derived figure is arithmetic shown to two decimals.

The 6%, 8% and 10% loads are labelled test values. No fragrance ceiling for Soy Pillar Wax is published in our data, and no per-oil IFRA, throw or reheating-loss figure is published either. Test before scaling. For a bulk oil or wax quote, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

Should fragrance load be calculated on finished or poured weight for mould candles?
The load is defined on the finished candle, and trimming does not change it, because the oil is evenly mixed. But the oil you buy must cover everything you pour, trimmings included. So use the poured weight (finished + trim) × load × pours, then add pour loss.
How much fragrance oil for 1,000 pillar candles?
For 180 g finished candles with 6 g of trim at 8%: 15,724.89 g of oil, with 2% failed releases, 5 tests and 3% pour loss. Planning on 1,000 × 180 g alone gives 14,400 g, which is 1,324.89 g short.
Can I reuse candle trimmings?
Clean trimmings can usually be remelted into a batch of the same scent and colour. It is common practice, and it recovers most of the wax and oil. Keep them off the floor, sorted by formula, and test that the remelted batch still meets your scent standard.
How much wax is lost when trimming mould candles?
It depends on the design and how you finish it, and no figure is published. Weigh ten candles before and after trimming and use the average. This page uses 6 g on a 180 g candle as a labelled example. Flat pillars lose less, detailed shapes more.
What is the maximum fragrance load for pillar wax?
CSI publishes no ceiling for Soy Pillar Wax. Check the product page or ask on WhatsApp for the wax maker's stated maximum. As a general practice point, freestanding candles show seeping oil on the surface, so test at 6% and 8% before committing a large run.
Can I buy more than 1 kg of one fragrance oil?
Yes. Order as many 1 kg bottles as you need, subject to stock, or ask on WhatsApp for a quote on larger quantities. No volume discount figure is published. For a 15,724.89 g order, also ask whether the whole quantity can come from one batch.
Poured weight × pours × loss, then split
