Multiplying 100 × 200 g gives the finished weight of the order, not the wax. At a 10% load, 2 kg of that 20 kg is fragrance oil. Buy 20 kg of wax and oil on top and you have paid for 2 kg of wax the jars cannot hold.
18.0 kg
of wax (not 20 kg) and 2 kg of fragrance oil, net, for 100 × 200 g at 10% · 19.09 kg and 2.12 kg with 2 tests and 4% loss · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How many kilograms of wax for 100 × 200 g candles at 10%? 18.0 kg net — 180 g per candle. With two test candles and 4% loss, 19,094.4 g, bought in CSI 464 as 1 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg + 4 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g (₹9,900.60).

Why not just multiply 100 × 200 g? Because 20 kg is wax and oil. The oil is 2 kg of it at 10%. Buying 20 kg of wax plus oil over-buys wax by 2,000 g (11.1%), or ₹1,014.80 of bags once allowances are added.

How much fragrance oil? 2,000 g net, 20 g per candle; 2,121.6 g with allowances. Dark Vanilla as 2 × 1 kg + 100 g + 50 g costs ₹16,492.00.

Is 10% too much for CSI 464? It is exactly the wax maker's stated maximum for CSI 464 — allowed, but with no headroom. Weigh oil per batch and test whether 8–9% performs as well. See working at the ceiling.
The short answer
Wax: 100 × 200 g × 90% = 18,000 g net · 19,094.4 g with 2 tests + 4% · CSI 464 1 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg + 4 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g (₹9,900.60).
Oil: 100 × 20 g = 2,000 g net · 2,121.6 g with allowances · Dark Vanilla 2 × 1 kg + 1 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g (₹16,492.00).
The shortcut: Multiplying 100 × 200 g as wax over-buys 11.1% at 10% load. The hub page sets out the five-step method.
100 × 200 g at 10%: what the candles hold vs what each method buys Drawn to scale · 1 kg = 18 px · 2 test candles and 4% loss in both orders · Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 · Dark Vanilla In the candles 100 × 200 g, net 18.0 kg wax + 2.0 kg oil = 20 kg Split first wax × 90%, then allowances 19.1 kg wax → 19.5 kg of bags + 2.15 kg oil Multiply 100 × 200 g candle weight bought as wax 21.2 kg wax → 21.5 kg of bags + oil 2 kg more wax · ₹1,014.80 more Grey = wax needed · dashed = rounding to whole CSI bags · black = fragrance oil bought (Dark Vanilla, 2 × 1 kg + 100 g + 50 g)
Each bar is drawn to the same scale. The top bar is what 100 finished candles contain. The middle bar is the order when you split the candle into wax and oil first, then add two test candles and 4% loss, then round to whole CSI 464 bags (dashed). The bottom bar applies the same allowances to 100 × 200 g treated as wax — about two kilograms more wax for the same 100 candles.
Straight answer
I need 100 × 200 g soy candles at 10% fragrance load — how many kilograms of wax should I order instead of simply multiplying 100 × 200 g?
Order for the wax share, not the candle weight. At 10%, each 200 g candle is 180 g of wax and 20 g of oil, so 100 candles need 18,000 g of wax and 2,000 g of oil — not 20 kg of wax. Multiplying 100 × 200 g and then buying oil on top over-buys wax by 2,000 g, which is 11.1% more than the candles can hold. Add two test candles and a 4% pour-loss allowance (working assumptions; use your own) and the order becomes 19,094.4 g of wax and 2,121.6 g of oil. In Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 that rounds to 1 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg + 4 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g for ₹9,900.60, or 2 × 10 kg for ₹10,148.00 if you want fewer bags. The shortcut with the same allowances would buy 2 × 10 kg + 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g for ₹10,915.40. One more thing: 10% is CSI 464's stated maximum, so this formula has no headroom — weigh the oil per batch, and burn-test 8–9% before you commit to buying the full oil order.
One line: multiply by 180 g, not 200 g — the other 20 g of every candle is fragrance.
For 100 × 200 g soy candles at 10%, with two test candles and a 4% loss allowance: 19,094.4 g of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, bought as 10 kg + 5 kg + 4 × 1 kg + 500 g (₹9,900.60), and 2,121.6 g of fragrance oil — Dark Vanilla as 2 × 1 kg + 100 g + 50 g (₹16,492.00). Not 20 kg of wax.

Why 100 × 200 g is the wrong wax number

At 10% fragrance, one gram in ten of every candle is oil. Multiply the candle weight and you buy that gram as wax too.

The multiplication feels natural: 100 candles, 200 g each, 20 kg. But 20 kg is the finished weight of the order — wax and oil together. At a 10% load, each 200 g candle holds 20 g of oil and 180 g of wax. Across 100 candles that is 2,000 g of oil and 18,000 g of wax. Buy 20 kg of wax and then 2 kg of oil for it, and you have bought 22 kg of material to make 20 kg of candles. The surplus is 2,000 g of wax — 11.1% more than the candles can hold.

The higher the load, the bigger the error. At 8% (the hub example) the shortcut over-buys wax by 8.7%; at 10% it is 11.1%. That is why this question matters more for strongly scented candles than for lightly scented ones — and why the answer is always the same formula: wax = candles × weight × (1 − load).

100 × 200 g · 10% load · net, before allowances
Multiplying vs splitting first
Method Wax Oil Material bought Candle made
Multiply 100 × 200 g, buy oil on top 20,000 g 2,000 g 22,000 g 20,000 g
Split first: 180 g wax + 20 g oil 18,000 g 2,000 g 20,000 g 20,000 g
Difference 2,000 g 0 g 2,000 g 11.1% extra wax
The CSI principle
Multiply by 180 g, not 200 g.
At 10% load the wax share of a 200 g candle is 180 g. That single substitution is the whole answer to the title — everything after it is allowances and bags.

The worked calculation with allowances

The title gives no wastage figure, so the allowances below are labelled working assumptions: two test candles (one to burn, one to keep), and 4% pour loss — the middle of the 3–5% range most makers plan. Tests are added as candles; the loss percentage then multiplies everything melted, tests included.

100 × 200 g · 10% of finished weight · CSI 464 · Dark Vanilla
From the order to grams
Line Finished weight Wax (90%) Oil (10%)
One candle 200 g 180 g 20 g
100 candles, net 20,000 g 18,000 g 2,000 g
+ 2 test candles 20,400 g 18,360 g 2,040 g
+ 4% pour loss (assumption) 21,216 g 19,094.4 g 2,121.6 g
Shortcut with the same allowances 21,216 g 21,216 g (as wax) 2,121.6 g on top

So the order is 19.09 kg of wax and 2.12 kg of oil. The shortcut, given exactly the same tests and loss, asks for 21,216 g of wax — 2,121.6 g more — because it applies the allowances to a wax figure that was already too large.

What the shortcut costs in bags. 21,216 g of CSI 464 rounds to 2 × 10 kg + 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g (₹10,915.40). The split-first figure rounds to 1 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg + 4 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g (₹9,900.60). That is ₹1,014.80 of wax you did not need on one 100-candle order — about two kilos sitting in the store room, or the wax for another eleven candles you never planned to make.

Working at CSI 464's 10% ceiling

Ten per cent is not a target for CSI 464. It is the top of the range.

Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 is rated up to 10% fragrance load by the wax maker. That is a stated formulation maximum — not a regulatory limit, and not the optimum. A 10% formula in this wax has no headroom: a heavy hand on the oil jug, a mis-tared scale or topping up a weak batch all push you over the maker's figure. Two things follow for the order. First, weigh oil per batch, not per candle — 20 g at a time invites rounding up. Second, decide now whether 10% is really the formula, because if a test tells you to go lower, the oil order shrinks and the wax grows.

Dropping from 10% to 8% saves ₹3,426.00 of Dark Vanilla on this order and ₹30.58 of oil in every candle, while the wax goes up by only 424.3 g. If you want to keep a 10% formula with headroom, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13% — the 300 × 150 g post works a 10% order in Chunks. Either way, whether 10% smells better than 8% in your jar is something only a side-by-side burn test answers; CSI publishes no throw measurements for any oil.

Rounding to CSI 464 bags and Dark Vanilla bottles

CSI 464 is listed at ₹260.00 for 500 g, ₹507.40 for 1 kg, ₹2,537.00 for 5 kg and ₹5,074.00 for 10 kg (CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026). From 1 kg upward the price is flat at ₹507.40 a kilo; the 500 g bag is slightly dearer at ₹520.00 a kilo. So there is no bulk reason to prefer the 10 kg bag — only fewer bags to open.

The priced order

The jar is CSI's White Matte Glass Jar, the container in CSI's 200 g cost examples. Its fill weight is not published, so weigh one test pour to confirm 200 g at your line. Wick size per jar diameter is not published either, and a 10% load is exactly where the wick choice matters, so this order buys a small test pack of both Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 and Thick C2, then 110 production wicks of whichever passes (100 + 10, a labelled allowance of eight spares).

Pour the two tests before buying the production oilBuy the wax, jars, test wicks and the 100 g bottle from the order first — two test candles use 40 g of oil. Pour at 10% with each wick type.
2
Burn, then decide the loadIf 10% is right, order the remaining oil as above. If 8% or 9% performs as well, use the sensitivity table — the oil order drops and the wax barely moves.
3
Place the production order in two linesWax bags to cover the split-first figure; oil rounded to the cheapest bottles that cover it. Never round each and then add a percentage.
4
Weigh oil per batchAt 10% in CSI 464 you are at the maker's ceiling. Weigh 500 g of oil into 4,500 g of wax for each 5 kg batch, tare the jug, and never top up by eye.
5
Record the real lossWeigh leftovers after the run. If your loss was 2%, next time's order is smaller; the 3% wastage post shows how to fold your own figure in.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. The shortcut this page corrects — buying the candle weight as wax — sells more of our wax on every order. We would rather you bought the right amount, came back for the next run, and did not find two kilos of CSI 464 in the corner six months later.

Wax and oil prices come from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026. Wick and jar prices are Blog 760's, verified 10 September 2026, with wick packs rechecked on 25 September 2026. The 10% ceiling for CSI 464 is the wax maker's stated formulation maximum. The splits, allowances, bag rounding and cost comparisons are plain arithmetic and are shown so you can check them.

The two test candles, 4% loss and spare wicks are working assumptions. Wick size per jar diameter is not published; test both wick types. CSI publishes no throw data, so whether 8%, 9% or 10% suits your candle is a burn-test decision. Frequently asked questions

How much wax do I need for 100 candles of 200 g?
It depends on the load. At 10%, 18,000 g (180 g each); at 8%, 18,400 g (184 g each); at 6%, 18,800 g (188 g each). Add your test candles and loss allowance on top.
How do you calculate wax for candles with fragrance oil?
Wax = number of candles × finished candle weight × (1 − fragrance load). Oil = candles × weight × load. Then add test candles, then a loss percentage, then round to real pack sizes.
How much fragrance oil for 100 candles at 10%?
For 200 g candles, 2,000 g net, 20 g each; 2,121.6 g with two tests and 4% loss. The 10% fragrance-oil post covers ordering the oil on its own.
What is the maximum fragrance load for CSI 464 soy wax?
The wax maker rates Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 up to 10%. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13%. These are formulation maximums, not regulatory limits or targets.
Is 10% fragrance too much for a soy candle?
Not if the wax is rated for it, but it is not automatically better. Burn-test 8%, 9% and 10% side by side in your jar with the same wick and cure. CSI publishes no throw measurements, so your test is the evidence.
Is it cheaper to buy soy wax in a 10 kg bag?
Not for CSI 464: ₹507.40 a kilo at 1, 5 and 10 kg, with the 500 g bag slightly dearer at ₹520.00 a kilo. Choose bag sizes by convenience. Natural Soy Pearl Wax is the one CSI container wax with a bulk step, from 5 kg.

About this guide: Written by the CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA team. Product recommendations reflect the CSI range. The split-first quantity method applies to any wax and any supplier's fragrance oils.

Customer reviews: The six reviews at the top of this page are genuine, published Judge.me reviews left by CSI customers on the product pages named on each card — Eco Candle Wicks, Premium Candle Wicking Needle and Bamboo Wick Holder. They are general product reviews, not assessments of the guidance set out here. Names, star ratings, dates and products are as recorded by Judge.me and wording is unedited. "Verified buyer" appears only on the three reviews Judge.me recorded as verified — Monika Deep, Subhankar Roy and Sneha Tamang; the reviews from Ashwini, LJ and Lalitha Jagan are published but not recorded as verified, and carry no badge.

Non-price figures and assumptions: CSI convention: fragrance load is a share of finished candle weight. Two test candles, 4% pour loss and eight spare production wicks are labelled working assumptions. CSI 464 melt/pour 80–90°C is CSI's own guidance — confirm on the product page. The White Matte Glass Jar's fill weight and wick size per jar are not published — confirm by weighed pour and burn test. Material costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November. Prices and availability change — the linked product pages are always authoritative.
