I Tested 1 Kg of Soy Wax Successfully — Is That Enough Evidence to Immediately Order 100 Kg from the Same Supplier?
Aktie
What should I buy next? One 5 kg bag of the same wax for a 3-oil qualification (12 candles + 12 controls), then a 10 kg pilot.
Does staging cost more per kilo? Not on CSI's ladders: Soy Pearl is ₹424.80/kg from 5 kg to 50 kg; Chunks ₹599.00/kg at 1 kg and 5 kg; CSI 464 flat from 1 kg.
What does the qualification cost? ₹5,391.52 in materials with Soy Pearl — 12.7% of the 100 kg order.
The short answer: no — one kilo is a screen, not a qualification
A successful kilo is good news. It tells you the wax is worth taking seriously: it poured, set, burned and smelt the way you hoped in the jar, oil and wick you tried. But look at what one kilo can physically hold. At 184 g of wax per 200 g candle (8% load), 1 kg makes 5.43 candles — so "tested successfully" means about five candles, usually with one oil, one wick and one cure, in one season, from one order. A 100 kg purchase stakes 543 candles' worth of wax on those five.
That is not enough evidence to order 100 kg immediately, for four reasons. Five candles cannot give you three burn candles, a full-life candle and a shelf candle for even one oil, let alone your range. A bench pour does not show how the wax behaves at your production batch size. The 100 kg will very likely come from a different order — and, as far as anyone can prove, a different lot — from the kilo you tested; CSI publishes no lot or batch-consistency data, and neither do most suppliers. And a single test cannot tell you whether the result was the wax or a lucky combination of wick, jar and cure.
The good news is that the fix is cheap and fast. Two intermediate steps — a 5 kg qualification across your main oils and a 10 kg pilot at batch size — turn five candles of evidence into dozens, and on CSI's Soy Pearl ladder they cost exactly ₹424.80 a kilo, the same rate as a 100 kg order. You lose nothing on price by waiting a few weeks. You lose a great deal if a problem appears in candle 150 of a 543-candle run.
What your successful kilo proved, and what it could not
Sort the questions a 100 kg commitment depends on into what a single kilo answered and what it left open. The middle column is generous — it assumes your kilo test was done carefully. The right column is what the next steps are for.
| Question for 100 kg | What 1 kg could show | Still open | Closed by |
|---|---|---|---|
| Does it pour, set and look right? | Yes, for one oil at bench scale | Your other oils; batch-scale pours | 5 kg qualification · 10 kg pilot |
| Is the wick right? | First burns of a few candles | Full-life burn; lower-third jar heat | Full-life candle per oil |
| Is the throw acceptable? | One impression, often not blind | Blind scoring vs control; cold throw after cure | 3 burn candles per oil, blind |
| Does it hold oil on the shelf? | Probably not observed yet | Sweating, frosting, wet spots after weeks | Shelf candle per oil |
| Does it work across my range? | One oil | Floral, fruit, woody, gourmand behave differently | 3 representative oils |
| Will my process scale? | Kitchen-size melt | Heat-up, stirring, last-jar temperature | 10 kg pilot |
| Is the next delivery the same? | Nothing — a different order | Lot-to-lot behaviour | Retained sample + delivery check |
| Is it better than what I use now? | Only if poured beside a control | Side-by-side scores | Controls in every step |
Notice that most of the open questions are not exotic. They are the ordinary things a candle has to do in a customer's home over weeks, and five candles in a week cannot see them. How many fragrance types to test before approving a wax and when a wax works with one oil but not another go deeper into the range question; comparing soy wax samples objectively sets the control conditions.
The evidence ladder: 1 kg → 5 kg → 10 kg → 100 kg
The table shows each step for Natural Soy Pearl, the wax used as the example here. Pearl is ₹450.00 a kilo in its 1 kg bag and ₹424.80 a kilo from 5 kg — including the 10 kg and 50 kg bags — so every step after the first is bought at the 100 kg rate. For Luxury Soy Wax Chunks the same holds: ₹599.00 a kilo in 1 kg and 5 kg bags, and a 100 kg order is 20 × 5 kg, ₹59,900.00.
| Step | Wax bought | Price | Per kg | Candles of wax | Evidence it adds |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 kg screen (done) | 1 kg | ₹450.00 | ₹450.00 | 5.43 | about 5 candles: one oil, one jar |
| 5 kg qualification | 5 kg | ₹2,124.00 | ₹424.80 | 27.17 | 3 oils × 4 candles + controls |
| 10 kg pilot | 10 kg | ₹4,248.00 | ₹424.80 | 54.35 | 51 candles in one batch at production size |
| 100 kg order | 100 kg | ₹42,480.00 | ₹424.80 | 543.48 | production |
The ratio between the first and last rows is the point: the 100 kg order is 94.4 times the money of the kilo you tested (100.0 times for Chunks), while the evidence behind it is the same five candles. The two middle steps change that. The 5 kg qualification runs 12 new-wax candles across 3 oils beside 12 controls; the 10 kg pilot pours about 51 candles at your real batch size, most of which you can sell if they pass. Whether to run a 5 kg or a 10 kg production trial sizes the pilot in more detail.
Step 2: the 5 kg qualification, candle by candle
Choose 3 oils that represent your range — this example uses Mango Coconut (fruit), Orchard Pear (fresh fruit) and Woody Oud (woody). For each oil, pour 4 candles in the new wax and 4 controls: three for burning (one of which goes to the end of its life) and one for the shelf. That is 12 new-wax candles needing 2,318.4 g of wax with a 5% allowance — comfortably inside one 5 kg bag.
| Line | Control | New wax | Pass rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pour and set: tops, glass contact | ___ | ___ | No worse than control |
| Full melt pool: time, diameter, depth | ___ | ___ | Within your tolerance |
| Flame, mushrooming, soot | ___ | ___ | Safety: no worse |
| Jar-side reading at each stage | ___ | ___ | Safety: no hotter |
| Full-life: tunnelling, last-third behaviour | ___ | ___ | No worse than control |
| Hot throw, blind (0–5) | ___ | ___ | Equal or better |
| Shelf: sweating, frosting, wet spots | ___ | ___ | No worse than control |
| Item | Need | Buy | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Natural Soy Pearl Wax | 2,318.4 g | 3 × 1 kg | ₹1,350.00 |
| Mango Coconut Fragrance Oil | 134.4 g | 1 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g | ₹750.00 |
| Orchard Pear Fragrance Oil | 134.4 g | 1 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g | ₹620.00 |
| Woody Oud Fragrance Oil | 134.4 g | 1 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g | ₹724.52 |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 | 24 + 2 | 1 × 20-pack + 1 × 10-pack | ₹177.00 |
| White Matte Glass Jar | 24 | 5 packs of 5 | ₹1,770.00 |
| Qualification total | ₹5,391.52 |
The qualification costs ₹5,391.52 in materials — about 12.7% of the 100 kg order it protects — and leaves you with most of a 5 kg bag still to use. The full soy-wax qualification test extends it to Indian heat and storage, and qualifying across manufacturing, warehouse, courier and customer use covers the summer-shipping lines.
What a late-found problem costs compared with waiting
The cost of skipping the steps is not the wax — wax that turns out to need a different wick can usually still be used once you have found the right one. The cost is the candles you have already poured, labelled and perhaps shipped before the problem shows itself. At the Pearl 10 kg rate, a 200 g candle in Mango Coconut carries ₹218.29 of materials (wax ₹78.16, oil ₹63.42, wick ₹5.90, jar ₹70.80), before labour, packaging, freight and GST. If an issue that a full-life burn would have caught appears after an example 100 candles, about ₹21,828.72 of materials are in jars that need rework or replacement — plus customer goodwill you cannot price.
| Route | Wax price per kg | Evidence before 100 kg | Money at risk if a late problem appears |
|---|---|---|---|
| Order 100 kg now | ₹424.80 | 5 candles, 1 oil | Up to ₹21,828.72 in poured candles (example 100) |
| 1 kg → 5 kg → 10 kg → 100 kg | ₹424.80 | 12 + 12 candles, 3 oils, full-life, pilot of 51 | Mostly the qualification kit: ₹5,391.52 |
| Same route in Chunks | ₹599.00 | Same | Per candle ₹250.34 if found late |

The decision rule
| You have… | Then | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| One successful 1 kg test | Qualify across 3 oils with controls | 1 × 5 kg (₹2,124.00 Pearl) |
| Qualification passed on every line, including full-life and shelf | Pilot one batch at production size | 1 × 10 kg (₹4,248.00) |
| Pilot passed; first, middle and last candles no worse than control | Order production quantity | 100 kg (₹42,480.00) — check the delivery |
| Any safety line worse than control at any step | Stop and adjust one variable (usually the wick) | Nothing more until it passes |
| A big customer order is waiting | Shorten cure checkpoints, never skip steps | Urgent replacements: 5492 |
For the reader who asked: do not order 100 kg yet. Buy one 5 kg bag of the wax that passed — ₹2,124.00 in Natural Soy Pearl or ₹2,995.00 in Chunks — and run the three-oil qualification beside your controls. When it passes, pour one 10 kg pilot. Then order the 100 kg at the same per-kilo rate, and give its first bag the delivery check in the first-carton post. What to have validated before a 500 kg order is the same ladder at the next scale.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A 100 kg order today would be the bigger sale. We recommend a 5 kg bag and a qualification instead, because the per-kilo price is the same and we publish no burn, throw or lot data that could replace your own test.
