At 50 kg a month you pour 11.67 kg of wax during every one-week delivery — that is lead-time demand, not safety stock. The buffer is for the deliveries that are late and the weeks that are busy: one sealed 10 kg bag, and a reorder point of 21.67 kg.
10 kg
safety stock = one sealed 10 kg bag (6.0 days) · reorder at 21.67 kg · CSI live pricing, re-checked 1 October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How much safety stock at 50 kg a month? About 10 kg — one sealed 10 kg bag, six days of use. Three methods give 6.09–14.33 kg with the example inputs.

What is my reorder point? Lead-time demand 11.67 kg + safety 10 kg = 21.67 kg.

Isn't a one-week lead time already a buffer? No. The 11.67 kg you pour while waiting is certain to be used. Safety stock covers a late delivery or a busy week.

Which CSI pack fits a 50 kg month? Natural Soy Pearl 50 kg (₹21,240.00, limited stock) or 5 × 10 kg at the same ₹424.80/kg; CSI 468 5 × 10 kg, ₹31,850.00.
The short answer
Answer: Hold one 10 kg bag as safety stock; reorder 50 kg when stock falls to 21.67 kg.
Method: Safety stock = daily use × extra days, or worst lead × peak use − normal lead-time demand, or z × √(L·σd² + d²·σL²). Round to a bag.
Check: 3 candles from each new delivery vs 3 retained controls; rotate the safety bag into production when each order lands.
Safety stock is what is left when the delivery is late 50 kg a month · 1.667 kg/day · reorder at 21.67 kg · normal lead 7 days, logged worst 12 days (example) 0 kg 10 kg 20 kg 30 kg 40 kg 50 kg 60 kg Safety stock 10 kg (one sealed 10 kg bag) Reorder point 21.67 kg order (day 23.0) normal: lands day 30.0, 10.00 kg left late (12 d): 1.67 kg left Without the 10 kg bag the reorder point would be 11.67 kg and a 12-day delivery would leave you 8.33 kg short — 5 days with no wax. Lead-time demand is spent waiting for the normal delivery; safety stock is spent only when the delivery or the demand surprises you.
Stock falls at 1.667 kg a day. The order is placed at the 21.67 kg reorder point. A normal seven-day delivery lands with 10.00 kg left — the safety bag untouched. A late delivery at the example worst case of 12 days lands with 1.67 kg: the safety bag has been opened, but production never stopped.
Straight answer
I use 50 kg of soy wax per month — how much safety stock should I keep if my supplier normally takes one week to deliver?
About 10 kg — one sealed 10 kg bag — with a reorder point of 21.67 kg. At 50 kg a month you use 1.667 kg a day, so a seven-day delivery consumes 11.67 kg while you wait. That is lead-time demand, not safety stock. Safety stock covers the two things that vary: how late the delivery can be and how busy the week is. Three common methods — a fixed 7 days of cover, a worst case from your own log (example: 12-day delivery in a week at 1.3× normal use) and a statistical formula with example variation figures — give 6.09 to 14.33 kg. Rounded to a real bag, 10 kg covers 6.0 days of surprise. Order one month (50 kg) each time stock falls to about 22 kg. In Natural Soy Pearl that is ₹21,240.00 a month at ₹424.80 a kilo (1 × 50 kg, limited stock, or 5 × 10 kg) plus a ₹4,248.00 safety bag once; in CSI 468, ₹31,850.00. Check each delivery with 3 candles against 3 retained controls, and rotate the safety bag into production when each order lands.
One line: lead-time demand is certain; safety stock is for the delivery that is late and the week that is busy.
At 50 kg a month with a one-week lead time, hold one sealed 10 kg bag as safety stock and reorder 50 kg when stock falls to about 22 kg. In Natural Soy Pearl Wax that is 50 kg at ₹21,240.00 (one 50 kg bag, limited stock — confirm on WhatsApp — or 5 × 10 kg at the same ₹424.80 a kilo) plus the 10 kg safety bag at ₹4,248.00: ₹25,488.00 for the first order.

The short answer: one 10 kg bag, and the reason is the word "normally"

A one-week lead time does not need safety stock. A lead time that is normally one week does.

At 50 kg a month you use 1.667 kg of wax a day — about 9.1 candles of 200 g at an 8% load. In the seven days between ordering and receiving, you will pour 11.67 kg. That is lead-time demand, and it is not safety stock: it is the wax you will certainly use while you wait. If the delivery always took exactly seven days and you always used exactly 1.667 kg a day, a reorder point of 11.67 kg would land every order on an empty shelf, perfectly on time. Nobody runs a workshop like that.

Safety stock exists for the two things that wobble: how long the delivery takes and how fast you use wax while you wait. Your title already contains the clue — "normally" one week. Three reasonable ways to size it are worked below, and at your volume they land between about 6 and 14 kg. Rounded to a real bag you can keep sealed, the practical answer is 10 kg — six days of normal use — giving a reorder point of 11.67 + 10 = 21.67 kg.

CSI does not publish delivery times, so every lead time on this page is either your own figure or a labelled example. The seven days is yours; the twelve-day worst case and the variation figures used in the calculations are examples you should replace with numbers from your own order log. The method stays the same whatever the numbers are.

The CSI principle
Lead-time demand is spent waiting. Safety stock is spent only when something goes wrong.
Size the first from your average day; size the second from your worst delivery and your busiest week.

Three ways to size safety stock at 50 kg a month

There is no single correct formula. Small manufacturers commonly use one of three approaches, from simplest to most data-hungry. Use the one your records can support, and check the answer against the others.

50 kg/month · 1.667 kg/day · lead time normally 7 days · example inputs labelled, replace with your log
Same workshop, three safety-stock methods
Method Inputs Formula Safety stock Days of cover
1 · Fixed days of cover 7 extra days (your choice) Daily use × days 11.67 kg 7.0
2 · Worst case from your log Worst lead 12 days, busiest weeks 1.3× normal use (examples) Max lead × peak daily − normal lead-time demand 14.33 kg 8.6
3 · Statistical Daily-use SD 0.6 kg, lead-time SD 2 days, z = 1.65 ≈ 95% (examples) z × √(L × σd² + d² × σL²) 6.09 kg 3.7
Rounded to a bag One sealed 10 kg bag — 10 kg 6.0

Method 1 is honest about being a judgement: you choose how many days of surprise you want to survive. Method 2 is the most cautious, because it assumes your slowest delivery arrives in your busiest week. Method 3 needs at least a few months of records, but it shows something the other two hide: with these example inputs, 82% of the risk comes from the delivery time, not from your daily usage. If you only allowed for usage wobble, the safety stock would be 2.62 kg. Allowing for a delivery that can drift by two days lifts it to 6.09 kg.

That is why the word "normally" matters. A supplier who is reliably slow is easier to plan around than one who is usually fast and occasionally very late. Log the real lead time of every order — order date, payment date, arrival date — and after six orders you will know which kind you have. Setting a reorder point when you keep running out uses that log to move the trigger as you grow, and safety stock when monthly use swings from 30 to 80 kg handles the case where usage, not delivery, is the wobble.

Calling lead-time demand "safety stock". A maker reorders at 12 kg and believes they hold a 12 kg buffer. They do not: 11.67 kg of it is spent during every normal delivery. Fix: write the reorder point as two numbers — lead-time demand (11.67 kg) and safety stock (10 kg) — so that when someone asks "how much buffer do we have?" the answer is the second number, not the sum.

The reorder point and the order that follows it

Order when you are down to 22 kg. Not when you are down to the last bag.

With a 10 kg safety bag, your reorder point is 21.67 kg. In practice that means: when the open stock plus the unopened bags (not counting the sealed safety bag) falls to about 12 kg, place the order. The order itself should be one month of use, 50 kg, which on CSI's list can be bought in one of two ways for Natural Soy Pearl — a single 50 kg bag (₹21,240.00, listed in limited stock, so confirm on WhatsApp first) or five 10 kg bags (₹21,240.00). Both are ₹424.80 a kilo, so the choice is about handling, not price. For CSI 468 the order is 5 × 10 kg, ₹31,850.00.

Holding cost of the safety bag ₹63.72/month ₹95.55/month Example 1.5% a month — replace

Check the plan against your worst case. If a delivery takes 12 days at normal usage, you burn 20.00 kg while waiting and the order lands with 1.67 kg on the shelf — you have opened the safety bag, but you never stopped pouring. If that slow delivery also lands in a week running at 1.3× normal use, you would need 26.00 kg and would be 4.33 kg short — about 24 candles' worth. That is Method 2's warning: if your busiest weeks and your slowest deliveries really do coincide — a festive rush, for example — carry a second bag for those weeks only.

Keep the safety bag physically separate
Put the safety bag on a different shelf with a tag: "Safety stock — open only if the order is late. Replace on arrival." If it sits with the working bags it will be opened on an ordinary Tuesday, and your buffer will quietly become zero.

What the safety bag costs against what a stock-out costs

A 10 kg safety bag of Natural Soy Pearl is ₹4,248.00 of cash you do not use in a normal month. At an example holding rate of 1.5% a month that is ₹63.72 a month; in CSI 468 it is ₹95.55. Now price the alternative. Each day without wax is 9.1 candles not poured. If each candle contributes an example ₹150.00 after materials (your figure will differ — use your own), a single day's stock-out is about ₹1,358.70 of contribution delayed or lost, before counting late customer orders.

Example contribution per candle and holding rate are labelled — replace with yours · materials at CSI pricing

Contribution lost per stock-out day ₹1,358.70 ₹1,358.70 Example ₹150.00 a candle
Stock-out days that pay for a year of holding 0.56 0.84 Break-even

The arithmetic is lopsided in every realistic case: a year of holding a safety bag costs less than a single day without wax. That is why the question at 50 kg a month is never whether to hold safety stock, only how much. Overdoing it has its own cost — more cash on the shelf and more wax sitting through a hot summer — which is why the bag is rounded to one, not three. At 100 kg a month the next question becomes how often to order, and storing 100 kg through an Indian summer covers conditions.

Ordering a second month instead of a safety bag. A maker who once ran out starts ordering 100 kg every time. Average stock doubles, the cash tied up doubles, and the reorder point is still "when it's empty" — so the next late delivery causes the same stock-out, a month later. Fix: keep the order at one month and fix the trigger. Order size and safety stock solve different problems.

The check every delivery gets, and the one the safety bag gets

At 50 kg a month you receive a delivery roughly every four weeks, and each one is, as far as you can prove, a new lot. CSI publishes no lot numbers or certificates of analysis, and nobody can promise you that two deliveries are identical. So two small checks keep the system honest. The first is the delivery check: three candles from the new delivery against three controls from retained approved stock. The second is the rotation rule: when a delivery arrives, the safety bag goes into production and a fresh bag becomes the new safety bag — so safety stock is never the oldest wax in the building.

Two waxes with a 10 kg bag and a 50 kg-a-month route

Both are priced here because both reach a 10 kg bag at their lowest listed per-kg rate, which is what a safety-stock system needs. CSI publishes no data showing one performs better than the other; if you are choosing between them, run them side by side in your jar first — the soy-wax qualification test sets the full protocol.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. We could tell you to hold a whole extra month "to be safe" and sell you 50 kg more. At your volume that doubles the cash on your shelf and still does not protect you if you reorder too late. One bag, a correct trigger and an honest lead-time log do more than a second month ever will.

For the reader who asked: hold one 10 kg bag as safety stock and reorder 50 kg at 22 kg on hand. In Natural Soy Pearl the first order is 50 kg plus the safety bag, ₹25,488.00; in CSI 468, ₹38,220.00. After that, every order is one month — ₹21,240.00 or ₹31,850.00 — and every delivery gets the 3 + 3 check before it goes into production. What to verify when your first large-format pack arrives covers the inspection side, and the procurement system post puts pack size, trigger and safety stock into one table.

Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026, and festive weeks are exactly when slow deliveries and peak usage coincide. If you expect October to run above 50 kg, place the festive wax as its own order now and carry a second safety bag through the season. Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A supplier's easy answer to "how much safety stock?" is "another month". We recommend one bag and a correct trigger instead, because a second month ties up your cash without fixing a late reorder. CSI publishes no delivery times, lot numbers or batch-consistency data, so the lead times here are yours and every delivery gets your own check.

Wax prices are CSI live pricing re-checked on 1 October 2026 (Natural Soy Pearl 50 kg listed in limited stock); oil prices were pulled on 24 September 2026; wick and jar prices are Blog 760's, verified 10 September 2026. Lead-time demand, safety stock, reorder points and holding costs are arithmetic shown to two decimals.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate safety stock for candle wax?
Pick a method your records support: daily use × days of extra cover; or worst lead time × peak daily use minus normal lead-time demand; or z × √(lead days × usage variance + daily use² × lead-time variance). Round up to a bag you can keep sealed.
What is the difference between reorder point and safety stock?
The reorder point is lead-time demand plus safety stock. At 50 kg a month and a 7-day lead time, 11.67 kg is spent waiting and 10 kg is the buffer; you reorder at 21.67 kg.
Can I buy 50 kg of soy wax in one bag from CSI?
Natural Soy Pearl is listed in a 50 kg bag at ₹21,240.00 (₹424.80/kg), in limited stock — confirm on WhatsApp. Five 10 kg bags cost the same per kilo. Other CSI container soy waxes stop at 10 kg.
How many candles does 50 kg of soy wax make?
About 272 candles of 200 g at 8% fragrance load (184 g wax each), before pour loss.
Should safety stock be the oldest wax I own?
No. Rotate it: when each delivery lands, open the old safety bag for production and seal a new bag. First in, first out keeps your buffer fresh.
What if my soy wax supplier is sometimes very late?
Then lead-time variation drives your safety stock more than usage does. Log every order's real lead time; if late deliveries cluster in festive weeks, carry a second bag only for those weeks.
One bag, right trigger
Know your lead-time demand. Keep one bag sealed. Order at the trigger, not at empty.
