CSI Cost Reduction · Standard Box
Eight per-scent boxes mean eight print runs and slow-scent boxes that outlive their design. One box plus scent labels saves ₹4.58 a unit on the worked range and releases ₹42,600.00 of box cash.

Quick answers — read this first
Could one standard box with scent labels cut packaging cost? Usually yes, and most of the gain is cash and dead stock, not the box price. On a worked eight-scent range of 700 candles a month, a per-scent printed box at ₹32.00 becomes one printed brand box plus a scent label at ₹27.42: ₹4.58 a unit, ₹38,472.00 a year, and ₹42,600.00 less cash sitting in boxes.

Where does the money come from? One longer print run instead of eight short ones (lower unit price), one box to reorder instead of eight, and no slow-scent boxes that outlive their design: at a 500-box minimum, the slowest worked scent's run lasts 33.3 months.

What does it cost? A scent label and the time to apply it (₹3.00 + ₹0.42 a unit, worked), label design and photos, and the loss of one colour per scent on the shelf. Worked one-off: ₹13,500.00, paid back in about 4.2 months.

Can CSI supply the standard box? For shipping, yes: the plain kraft Corrugated Box 11 x 11 x 8 cm at ₹22.42 (option B, ₹25.84 with a label). CSI does not print boxes or labels, so a printed brand box stays with your printer.
The short answer
Rule: standardise the box when your slowest scents' print runs outlast your design life, or when box cash is more than a month or two of box spend.
Option A: one printed brand box ₹24.00 + scent label ₹3.00 + application ₹0.42 = ₹27.42, saving ₹4.58 a unit, ₹3,206.00 a month.
Option B: CSI kraft box ₹22.42 + scent label + application = ₹25.84, saving ₹6.16 a unit, for online orders that need no printed box.
Cash: boxes on the shelf fall from ₹86,400.00 to ₹43,800.00 (A) or ₹26,541.00 (B); a dropped scent leaves ₹375.00 of labels, not ₹8,000.00 of boxes.

Dark bars outlast the worked 12-month refresh: those boxes are the likeliest dead stock. Sales, run sizes and the refresh horizon are worked examples — use your own.
Months a 500-box printed run lasts for each of eight worked scents. Fast scents use up a run in two or three months; the slow ones hold boxes for a year or more, past a typical design refresh. One standard box shared by all eight turns over in under three months.
Straight answer
I use different boxes for every candle fragrance. Could one standard box with fragrance-specific labels reduce packaging costs?
Yes, and the bigger gain is usually not the box price but what eight separate boxes do to your cash. Each printed design has its own minimum run, so fast scents reorder often while slow scents sit on boxes for months or years; when you drop a scent or refresh the design, those boxes become waste. On a worked range of eight scents and 700 candles a month, moving from per-scent boxes at ₹32.00 to one printed brand box at a longer run plus a scent label costs ₹27.42 a unit, saving ₹4.58 and ₹38,472.00 a year, and cuts boxes on the shelf from ₹86,400.00 to ₹43,800.00. For online orders where a printed box is not needed, CSI's plain kraft shipper with the same label is ₹25.84. The costs are real: label printing, ten seconds of labelling per unit, design work, and losing a distinct colour per scent, which matters most on retail shelves. Price those, mitigate the colour with colour-coded labels, and use up old boxes before you switch each scent.
One line: put the variety on a cheap label and the volume on one box.
Trying one standard shipper? A 50-pack of the Corrugated Box 11 x 11 x 8 cm (₹1,121.00) covers a fit check across your jars and the first weeks of orders. The 100-pack costs the same per box, so buy 50s as you go.

What eight boxes really cost

The invoice shows a box price. The shelf shows eight piles of boxes.

Start with one candle. This is a worked example: a 200 g candle at 8% (16 g of oil, 184 g of wax, load as a share of total weight) with CSI wax, oil and wick, and your own jar, jar label and printed per-scent box. Citrus Lemon's page states "candles (6-10%)"; Eco Soy CSI 400 states no fragrance load ceiling in the text we captured (its page says to add fragrance at 85°C and stir gently for 2 minutes), so treat 8% as a starting point your own tests confirm.

The box is 14.6% of COGS, the third-largest line. But the per-unit price hides how it is bought. Printers typically quote a minimum run per design and a lower unit price for longer runs; with eight designs you buy eight short runs, each at the short-run price. The worked range below has eight scents selling from 220 down to 15 candles a month (700 in all), and a worked 500-box minimum per design.

Eight per-scent boxes · worked
Run per design: 500 boxes (worked minimum) · months of cover = run ÷ monthly sales
Scent Candles a month Months a 500-box run lasts Reorders a year
Scent A 220 2.3 5.3
Scent B 150 3.3 3.6
Scent C 110 4.5 2.6
Scent D 80 6.2 1.9
Scent E 60 8.3 1.4
Scent F 40 12.5 1.0
Scent G 25 20.0 0.6
Scent H 15 33.3 0.4

Scent A reorders about five times a year; Scent H's single run lasts 33.3 months. Every one of those eight piles needs its own reorder decision, its own shelf space and its own safety stock. Whether you should carry eight scents at all is a range question (consolidating a 20-scent range is the 20-fragrances post); here the range stays and only the box changes.

The cash and dead stock in per-scent boxes

Slow scents do not just sell slowly. They hold boxes for years.

Use a simple stock policy (a worked assumption: reorder a full run when a design falls to one month of safety stock). Average stock per design is then about half a run plus one month of sales. Across eight designs that is 2,700 boxes on the shelf on average, ₹86,400.00 of cash at ₹32.00 a box. At a worked 1.5% monthly cost of money, holding them costs ₹1,296.00 a month before you count the space.

The quieter cost is dead stock. When you drop a scent, rename it or refresh the box design, whatever is left of that design is waste. At half a run left on average, dropping one scent writes off about ₹8,000.00 of boxes. Scents E to H take 8 months or more to use a run, and F, G and H outlast a worked 12-month design refresh; those boxes are the ones most likely to end up in the bin.

With one standard box, the scent lives on the label. Labels are cheap, quick to reprint and usually have smaller minimums (a worked 250 per design). Dropping a scent then leaves about ₹375.00 of labels, and changing the box design affects one pile, not eight.

Count your piles
Walk to your packaging shelf and count boxes per design, then divide by each scent's monthly sales. Any design with more than 12 months on the shelf is cash you will probably not see again in that form. That number alone often decides the question.

Two standard-box options, priced

Both options keep the jar, jar label and candle exactly as they are. The box price at a 2,000 run, the scent label and the labelling time are worked examples: use your own quotes.

Per-unit cost and cash · worked at 700 candles a month
Scent label ₹3.00 (worked) · application ₹0.42 = 10 seconds at a worked ₹150.00 an hour · cash = average stock × unit price
Option What ships Per unit Saving per unit Saving a year Cash in boxes and labels
Today eight printed per-scent boxes ₹32.00 — — ₹86,400.00
A · one printed brand box + scent label 2,000-box run at ₹24.00 (worked), lasts 2.9 months ₹27.42 ₹4.58 ₹38,472.00 ₹43,800.00
B · CSI kraft box + scent label Corrugated Box 11 x 11 x 8 cm at ₹22.42, bought in 50s monthly ₹25.84 ₹6.16 ₹51,744.00 ₹26,541.00

Option A keeps a printed retail box, now one design with your brand, and moves the scent name, colour and notes to a label on the box. The longer run brings the unit price down (that is the worked ₹32.00 → ₹24.00); the label and labelling add back ₹3.42. Net, ₹4.58 a unit, ₹3,206.00 a month, ₹38,472.00 a year, and box cash falls from ₹86,400.00 to ₹43,800.00, releasing ₹42,600.00. Holding cost drops from ₹1,296.00 to ₹657.00 a month. Box plus label becomes 12.8% of a ₹214.62 COGS.

Option B drops the printed box for orders that do not need one. The plain kraft Corrugated Box 11 x 11 x 8 cm from CSI, with the same scent label, is ₹25.84 a unit: ₹6.16 saved, ₹51,744.00 a year, and only ₹26,541.00 on the shelf because you can buy 50s every month. It looks like a shipper, not a retail box, so it suits online self-purchase orders; whether a printed box earns its place on gift and retail orders is the ₹45 box post.

Cash, holding and dead stock side by side · worked
Average stock = half a run (or half a month for CSI boxes bought monthly) + one month of safety stock · holding at a worked 1.5% a month

B · CSI kraft + labels 1 (+8 label designs) 1,050 + 1,000 labels ₹26,541.00 ₹398.12 ₹375.00

Sensitivity: if the long run is not much cheaper. The per-unit saving in option A rests on your printer's price for a 2,000 run. If it is a worked ₹28.00 rather than ₹24.00, option A costs ₹31.42 a unit and saves only ₹0.58. At that point the case rests almost entirely on cash and dead stock, which is still ₹42,600.00 released, less a little because each box costs more. Get the long-run quote before you count the per-unit saving.

Many brands end up with both: option A for gifts, retail and corporate, option B for everyday online orders, and one set of scent labels used on either. That is still two box SKUs instead of eight.

Argued against our own interest: if you sell mostly through shops where each scent's box colour is how buyers find it on the shelf, our plain kraft box is the wrong standard; keep a printed box, standardise it to one design, and buy from your printer. And our 100-pack costs exactly the same per box as the 50-pack (₹22.42 against ₹22.42), so the standard-box saving does not come from buying more from us; it comes from fewer designs.

What you give up, and what it costs

A label is cheap. Losing a colour is not free.

Label printing. Eight label designs at a worked ₹3.00 each per unit, with their own small minimums. That cost is already inside both options above. Ask your printer for a combined run across designs on one sheet or roll; it often lowers the per-label price.

Application time. At a worked 10 seconds a label and 700 candles a month, labelling takes about 1.9 hours a month, ₹0.42 a unit at ₹150.00 an hour. A crooked label on a premium box looks worse than no label, so allow for a simple jig or a marked position on the box. Against that, packing gets simpler: one box size, one fill amount and no hunting for the right design, which tends to cut packing errors (judgement; your packing log will show it).

Per-scent colour. This is the real trade. Colour-coded boxes help buyers find a scent on a shelf and make a range look abundant in photos. A standard box loses that unless the label carries it. The cheapest fix is a colour per scent family on the label (citrus, floral, woody, gourmand) rather than per scent, so even a new scent fits the system without a new colour.

One-off costs (worked): label design ₹3,000.00, new product photos ₹2,500.00, and old boxes written off for the two slowest scents ₹8,000.00 (use up the rest). Total ₹13,500.00: paid back in about 4.2 months on option A, 3.1 on option B, before counting the cash released.

When it does not pay. If you sell three or four scents and all of them use a print run in two or three months, per-scent boxes cost you little in cash or dead stock, and the label and labelling time can cancel the unit saving; keep your boxes and look elsewhere. The same is true if your scents are seasonal and each box design is meant to be used up in one season: a limited-edition box that sells out is not dead stock. Standardising pays most when the range is wide, sales are uneven, and the slowest designs sit on the shelf longer than you keep a design.

Mistake: sizing the standard box to the average jar. Why it fails: the tallest jar will not close in it, and someone starts buying a second box "just for that one". Fix: size the one box to the largest jar with its lid and cushioning, and accept a little more fill for the small ones. If your jars vary a lot, the jar side of the problem comes first: the five-jars-to-two post, and the box-to-jar fit system is the compatible-sizes post.

Designing scent labels that do the box's job

Once the box is standard, the label carries everything that used to make each box different. A few rules keep it working and keep you out of trouble.

What the scent label should carry

The scent name, large; a short description of the scent character in your own words; a colour band by scent family; net weight; a batch or lot code so a complaint can be traced to a pour date; and your brand. Net-quantity and other mandatory declarations are covered by labelling rules: check current requirements (not legal advice), and how to work out the net weight to print is the net-weight-on-the-label post.

What it should not carry

Third-party brand names: even where a supplier's oil listing is named after a perfume or a store, do not put that name on your label. No health or mood claims either: describe the scent ("fresh citrus, green top") and the setting it suits, not what it does to the buyer. Keep the label honest about what is inside: a fragrance oil is not an essential oil.

What belongs on the standard layer instead

Anything identical across scents: burn and safety instructions, your website, care advice. Put it on the standard box print (option A), on a standard sticker such as the Candle Care Stickers Roll (₹0.83 a sticker), or on the jar's base label. Keep the scent label small and quick to change.

A colour system that survives new scents

Per-scent colour breaks every time you add a scent: you need a new colour, and eventually two scents look alike. A family system does not. Here is one way to set it up (judgement; choose your own colours and families).

Scent-family colour bands · example system
One band colour per family, printed on the scent label · a new scent takes its family colour, so no new box or colour is needed
Family Band What the label text describes Worked scents in this range
Citrus and fresh band 1 bright, zesty, green top notes Scent A, Scent D
Floral band 2 petals, soft or heady florals Scent B, Scent F
Woody and warm band 3 woods, resins, amber, smoke Scent C, Scent G
Gourmand band 4 vanilla, coffee, bakery notes Scent E, Scent H

Label stock is cash too, just much less of it. The first label order for eight designs at a worked 250 each and ₹3.00 a label is ₹6,000.00; ask your printer to gang all eight designs on one run, which often lowers the per-label price and lets you order the fast scents in larger quantities on the same sheet. Keep a little more stock of fast-scent labels and reorder slow ones in small runs: that is the flexibility per-scent boxes never gave you.

Mistake: putting the safety text on each scent label. Why it fails: every wording change means reprinting eight designs, and slow-scent labels go out of date like the old boxes did. Fix: one safety layer for the whole range, scent-specific information only on the scent label.

Switching without waste

A box and label change is a packaging change: wax, oil, wick and jar stay exactly as approved, so there is no burn retest (which changes count as a revised formulation is the which-changes-count post). The risks are fit, buyer reaction and wasted stock.

1
Count boxes per designMonths of cover per scent; anything past your design horizon is the write-off you are trying to stop.
2
Choose the standard box by the tallest jarFit-check every jar with its lid and cushioning. For CSI boxes, ask for inside dimensions on WhatsApp; the pages do not state them.
3
Design the label systemScent name, family colour band, net weight, batch code. Safety text on the standard layer.
4
Check reaction before the full switchPhotograph the new box beside the old for your listings; if you sell at stalls, put both out for a weekend. The perception-testing method is the customer-perception test post.
5
Switch scent by scent as old boxes run outFast scents switch within weeks; for slow scents decide whether to write off the remainder or wait. Do not reorder any per-scent box after the decision.
6
Write the packing specOne box, one fill amount, label position, tape length. Protection still needs test parcels if the box changes size: the packaging-without-breakage post.

Box standardisation is one step in a wider order: which components to standardise first across a range (wax, wick, jar, box, oils) is the standardise-first post, and lids have their own version in the jar-and-lid systems post.

This is for you if: you print a box per scent, your slow scents' boxes last longer than your design life, or box stock is a noticeable share of your cash. Wait if: you sell mainly on retail shelves where colour-per-scent drives choice; standardise the design to one box first and test whether colour-coded labels hold sales before removing per-scent colour.

What to buy, and what to skip

Four CSI items for a standard packaging layer, chosen on page statements, pack prices and stock on 4 October 2026. CSI does not sell printed boxes or custom labels; those stay with your printer.

1
standard shipper · one box for the whole range
Corrugated Box for Candle Packaging (11 x 11 x 8 cm)
"Extra small cardboard shipper boxes" with "self-locking tabs", "recycled corrugated cardboard", "Size: 11 x 11 x 8 cm", Kraft Brown. A plain kraft box is the simplest standard box there is: no print, so nothing to go out of date when you add or drop a scent, and the scent label does the talking. The page does not say whether the size is inside or outside, so fit-check your tallest jar with its lid; it sits in no store collection, so use the link here. ₹22.42 a box at 50 or 100.
Pack Price Per box Note

Pack of 100 ₹2,242.00 ₹22.42 same per box

2
standard shipper · for taller jars
Corrugated 3 ply box 7 x 5 x 4 Inch (Pack of 50)
"Tab lock boxes", 3-ply corrugated. If your tallest jar does not close in the 11 x 11 x 8 cm box, this is the other standard size CSI lists: ₹26.72 a box. One standard box means one size for the tallest jar in the range, so the shorter jars need a little more fill; price that into the comparison.
Pack Price Per box Note
Pack of 50 ₹1,336.00 ₹26.72 one pack size
₹26.72 a box. Buy 50 — ₹1,336.00
3
seal · plain, consistent
Craft Paper Tape (50 m and 200 m)
Brown gummed, water-activated tape; "a tamper evident seal" on corrugated, "not plastics". ₹4.72 a metre on 50 m, ₹4.13 on 200 m (a worked 60 cm per box is ₹2.48 on the bigger roll). With one standard box, one tape width and one tape length per box become part of the packing spec.
Roll Price Per metre Note
50 meters ₹236.00 ₹4.72
200 meters ₹826.00 ₹4.13 cheaper per metre
₹2.48 of tape a box on 200 m. Buy 200 m — ₹826.00
4
safety label · the same on every scent
Candle Care Stickers Roll (500 and 1,000 stickers)
The listing title calls it a "Candle Safety Sticker Roll", 500 stickers at 1 inch or 1,000 at 1.5 inch. Safety wording is identical across scents, so it belongs on the standard layer, not on each scent label: ₹0.83 a sticker on the 500 roll, ₹0.70 on the 1,000 roll. Check that the printed wording covers what you want to say; we do not quote it here.
Roll Price Per sticker Size
Pack of 500 ₹413.00 ₹0.83 1 inch
Pack of 1000 ₹699.00 ₹0.70 1.5 inch
₹0.83 a sticker. Buy 500 — ₹413.00

Skip for this decision: 100-packs bought for a discount that is not there, a new per-scent box run "to use up the design", and printed labels for scents you are about to drop.

Diwali is 8 November 2026, 35 days from 4 October 2026. Do not switch your fastest scents' boxes in the middle of festive volume. Use up per-scent boxes through Diwali, order labels now, and switch scent by scent in the quieter weeks after.

The CSI principle
Put the variety on the cheapest, quickest-to-change layer. Put the volume on one box.
On the worked range, one printed brand box with scent labels saves ₹4.58 a unit and ₹38,472.00 a year, and releases ₹42,600.00 of cash from box stock.

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells plain corrugated boxes, paper tape and safety sticker rolls, and does not sell finished candles, printed boxes or custom labels. This page still tells you that our plain box is the wrong standard for shelf-led retail, that our 100-pack saves nothing per box, and that most of the saving here comes from your printer's run lengths, not from us.

Every CSI price was checked on the live store on 4 October 2026, with stock checked per listing; the 4.5 x 3 x 2.5 inch box and the Eco C1 10-pack are out of stock on that date and are not used here. Product wording is quoted from the pages; where a page is silent in the text we captured (box inside dimensions, Eco Soy load ceiling, sticker wording), we say so.

The eight-scent sales, printer minimum, box and label prices, labour rate, labelling time, stock policy, cost of money, design horizon and one-off costs are labelled worked examples. Frequently asked questions

Should I use one box for all my candle scents?
Usually yes, if a label can carry the scent. On the worked range it saves ₹4.58 a unit and cuts box stock from ₹86,400.00 to ₹43,800.00. Keep per-scent colour if shelf buyers choose by box colour.
How much can standardising candle boxes save?
Per unit, it depends on your printer’s run pricing: ₹4.58 on the worked numbers, ₹38,472.00 a year at 700 candles a month. The larger gain is cash released (₹42,600.00) and less dead stock when scents change.
What should a candle scent label include?
Scent name, a short scent description in your own words, a family colour band, net weight, a batch code and your brand. Keep safety text on a standard layer. Check current labelling rules (not legal advice).
Can I put a perfume or brand name on my candle label?
No. Do not use third-party brand names on your label, even if a supplier’s oil listing is named after one. Describe the scent character instead.
Does CSI sell printed candle boxes or labels?
No. CSI sells plain kraft corrugated boxes (11 x 11 x 8 cm at ₹22.42, 7 x 5 x 4 inch at ₹26.72), paper tape and safety sticker rolls. Printed boxes and labels stay with your printer.
Will changing my candle box affect the candle itself?
No. A box is outside the burn formula, so no burn retest is needed. Check fit for your tallest jar and send test parcels if the box size changes.
