Cold throw is the only part of your candle a customer judges before they have paid any attention to it. It comes from a very small quantity of oil, two wax pages that say something useful, a lid, and a cure that costs nothing — and no supplier on earth publishes a number for it.

Quick answers — read this first
What actually produces cold throw? Oil at the surface of solid wax, evaporating slowly into the headspace above it. So it depends on how much oil is in the wax, how well the wax holds it, how long it has cured, and whether a lid kept the headspace — not on how hot the candle burns.Which wax? Two CSI wax pages state a cold-throw position and no others do. Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 at ₹650/kg states "excellent hot and cold throw"; Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at ₹507.40/kg states "strong scent throw (both cold and hot)". Start with one of those two.
Which oils? Ones whose pages state a cure window, because that is the published fact most relevant to cold throw. Jasmine states "strong cold and hot throw" and a 48–72 hour cure; Woody Oud says oud "benefits from full cure for best cold throw development"; Royal Oud asks for 72–96 hours before you even assess cold throw.
What is the cheapest lever? Time. Cure is free. Every stated cure window in the CSI oil range is a minimum, standard practice for soy containers is 14 to 21 days, and a fortnight of patience moves cold throw further than ₹15.32 of extra oil will.
The short answer
Buy the wax for its stated throw position, then the oil for its stated cure window. Those are the only two published facts in the CSI range that bear directly on cold throw. Everything else you will read about it — including on this page — is either arithmetic or bench practice, and should be labelled as such.
Use the lower of the two stated ceilings, then stop. CSI 468 states up to 13%; Woody Oud states 6–10% for soy; Royal Oud states a candle maximum of 10% and suggests starting a test batch at 6–8%. So 10% governs, and past it the surplus oil does not bind — it sweats, which is the opposite of cold throw.
Then protect the headspace. Cold throw is a sealed-container effect. A jar with a lid holds it; an open jar on a shelf loses it. The 150 g apothecary family's page describes its metal lid as a snug fit that protects the scent — that is a design feature worth ₹94.40 a jar.

The same fragrance costs very different money per gram depending on the bottle it came out of, and the gap is largest exactly where beginners buy. A 15 gm trial is the right way to shortlist a scent and the wrong way to pour a batch: on Woody Oud it is ₹24.92 more per candle than the 100 gm bottle, on Jasmine ₹37.99 more. Woody Oud goes flat at ₹4.53 a gram from 100 gm upward; Jasmine keeps falling to ₹3.92 at 500 gm and 1 kg. Neither number tells you anything about cold throw — that is what the cure and your own panel are for.

What should I consider in the wax and the oil if I want strong cold throw when the box is opened?
Four things, in this order. First, the wax's stated throw position. Only two CSI wax pages say anything about cold throw at all: Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 at ₹650/kg states "excellent hot and cold throw", and Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at ₹507.40/kg states "strong scent throw (both cold and hot)". Every other container wax in the range is silent, so those two are where a cold-throw brief should start. Second, the oil's stated cure window, because cure is the published fact most closely tied to cold throw: Jasmine states "strong cold and hot throw" with a 48–72 hour cure; Woody Oud states 6–10% for soy and that oud "benefits from full cure for best cold throw development"; Royal Oud says to "cure for 72–96 hours before assessing cold throw"; Vetiver warns its "fragrance layer builds slowly". Third, the load — at the lower of the two ceilings. In a 200 g candle at 8% of total wax weight you have 14.8 g of oil, which is ₹67.06 of Woody Oud at ₹4.53 a gram. Ten per cent takes it to 18.18 g and ₹82.38. Past the lower stated ceiling the extra oil does not dissolve; it migrates to the surface, and a sweating candle smells wrong rather than strong. Fourth, the headspace. Cold throw is a sealed-jar phenomenon — it is the concentration of fragrance in the air above the wax — so a lid is a functional component, not decoration, and the box is where that air is held until the customer opens it. And then wait. Every stated cure window is a minimum; 14 to 21 days is standard practice for soy containers; and it is the only lever on this page that costs nothing at all.
One line: pick a wax that states a cold-throw position, an oil that states a cure window, hold the load at the lower ceiling, give the candle a lid, and then give it three weeks.

What cold throw is, and what nobody publishes
Hot throw is a performance. Cold throw is a first impression — and first impressions are made in a closed box.
Cold throw is the scent a candle gives off unlit. Physically it is a small amount of fragrance evaporating from the surface of solid wax into whatever air is trapped above it. That single sentence explains most of what follows: the quantity of oil matters, how well the wax holds and releases it matters, time matters because the oil needs to distribute through the wax, and the volume of air it evaporates into matters enormously — which is why a candle smells strong in a closed jar and unremarkable on an open shelf.
Now the honest part. CSI publishes no cold-throw rating, no intensity scale, no distance figure and no room-size figure, and neither does anyone else who is being careful. Of the fragrance-oil pages in the range, only a small minority mention cold throw at all, and where they do it is qualitative — "strong cold and hot throw", "benefits from full cure for best cold throw development". What a great many more pages do state is a cure window, and that is the fact you should be shopping on, because it is the supplier telling you how long the oil needs before it is fair to judge it.

The mistake: judging cold throw on day one and buying more oil. A candle poured yesterday has not finished becoming itself. The oil is still distributing through the wax, and on the heavier oriental and woody profiles the pages say so explicitly — Royal Oud asks for 72 to 96 hours before you assess cold throw at all, and Vetiver's page warns the fragrance layer "builds slowly". A maker who smells a day-old jar, panics and lifts the load from 8% to 13% has spent ₹37.13 more per 200 g candle on Woody Oud, exceeded that oil's own stated 6–10% range, and thrown away the free fix. The oil: fifteen grams and what they cost
Work in grams of oil, not bottles. A 200 g candle at 8% of total wax weight contains 14.8 g of fragrance; at 10% it contains 18.18 g. That is the whole budget — everything the customer smells through a closed lid comes out of fifteen grams or so of liquid. Priced per gram, the CSI range for a cold-throw-led candle looks like this.

Woody Oud Fragrance Oil
An oriental woody oud whose page addresses cold throw directly: the recommended candle load is 6–10% (10–15% for wax melts), the cure is 48–72 hours, and the page states that "oriental fragrance oils like oud benefit from full cure time to develop their best cold throw". Its page states no flash point, so do not borrow one from another oud — ask for documentation instead. Pricing is flat at ₹4.53 a gram from 100 gm right through 500 gm and 1 kg, which means there is no scale reward for over-buying before the formula is proved. One CSI customer, Payal Patel, describes it as a "good quality wood fragrance oil with a warm, long-lasting scent and strong performance in candles".

The oil · the only page that names cold throw in its throw claim
Jasmine Fragrance Oil
The clearest published cold-throw language in the shortlist: the page states "strong cold and hot throw" and specifies a cure of 48 to 72 hours "for strong cold and hot jasmine throw", with a load of up to 10% for soy, a measured flashpoint of 185°C and 0% vanillin — no discolouration. It is also the cheapest per gram in the shortlist and the only one that keeps falling with the pack: ₹4.30 a gram at 100 gm, ₹3.92 at 500 gm and 1 kg. That flashpoint is safety information about handling, not an instruction about when to add the oil — your add temperature comes from the wax page.

Shortlist in 15 g, pour in 100 g and above
A 15 gm bottle is the right tool for deciding whether you like a scent and the wrong tool for making candles: at ₹6.21 a gram, Woody Oud in 15 gm costs ₹24.92 more per 200 g candle than the same oil out of a 100 gm bottle, and 15 g barely covers one candle at 8%. Buy three or four 15 gm bottles to smell and compare, pick two, then buy those two at 100 gm for the pour. Wax matters to cold throw because it is what holds the oil and what releases it at room temperature. But almost nothing about that is published, so the useful filter is again: which pages take a position? Exactly two.

Two things follow. First, the dearest waxes in the range say nothing about throw at all, so price is not your guide here. Second — and this is the part most makers get backwards — the wax's 13% ceiling is almost never the binding one. Every oil in the shortlist above states 10% or less for soy, and Woody Oud states 6–10%. So choosing CSI 468 for its 13% headroom and then pairing it with an oil that stops at 10% gives you a candle at 10%, not 13%. The extra headroom is only useful if you find an oil whose page permits more, and on the current range you mostly will not. The wax · states a cold-throw position explicitly
Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 (Flakes)
One of only two CSI waxes whose page mentions cold throw at all, listing "excellent hot and cold throw" among its key features alongside a "rich, opaque appearance with minimal frosting", "excellent glass adhesion" and a one-pour finish. Stated melting point 50–53°C, pour 58–60°C, load up to 13% — and the page also states a shelf life of 60 months in cool, dry storage, which is unusual in the range and worth knowing if you buy in quantity. The low stated pour window means a ₹354 thermometer is not optional. Price steps down from ₹650/kg to ₹637/kg at 5 kg and 10 kg.

Cure: the free lever, and the only one with a stated number
Here is the whole economic argument for patience, in one comparison. Lifting a 200 g candle from 8% to 10% of total wax weight adds 3.38 g of oil — ₹15.32 on Woody Oud, ₹14.53 on Jasmine — and takes you to the top of the lower stated ceiling, with nowhere left to go. Waiting an extra ten days costs ₹0, is recommended by the oil pages themselves, and is repeatable on every batch you ever pour.

Do not use flash point as a cure or add temperature, and do not treat "> 93°C" as a measurement. Several oils in this shortlist publish a measured flash point — Jasmine 185°C, Sandalwood 203°C, Vetiver 206°C — and several publish only the threshold line "flash point > 93°C (suitable for alcohol-based products)", which is a perfume-grade template statement, not a measured value for that oil. Royal Oud and Mint Sandalwood fall into the second group, and Woody Oud's page states none at all. Never fill that gap from a similar scent. And in every case your add temperature comes from the wax page — 58–60°C for CSI 468's pour, 80–90°C for a soy add — never from the oil's flash point.
Lid, headspace and the box
You are not selling a scent. You are selling a volume of scented air that has to survive a journey.
This is the section most cold-throw advice leaves out, and it is the one that matters at the moment described in the question — the box being opened. Between your bench and that moment, the fragrance evaporating from your candle's surface accumulates in whatever enclosed space surrounds it. A lidded jar inside a box is two nested reservoirs of scented air; a lidless jar in a padded envelope is neither.

A practical consequence for anyone selling a lidless vessel: the box is your lid. If you pour into the matte glass family at ₹70.80 — which is ₹23.60 cheaper than the lidded apothecary jar — then the ₹22.42 corrugated box is not optional packaging, it is the component that preserves the thing the customer is about to judge you on. That is a genuine trade rather than a saving. On storage, be careful what you claim: no CSI fragrance-oil page states a shelf life, an expiry or any storage instruction, so "keep it cool and dark" is sensible general practice, not a published specification. The CSI 468 and CSI 464 wax pages do state a 60-month shelf life in cool, dry storage, and those are the two figures on this subject that come from a page rather than from folklore.
Panel passed? Woody Oud holds ₹4.53 a gram to 1 kg, Jasmine falls to ₹3.92 at 500 g and 1 kg, and CSI 468 steps to ₹637/kg at 5 kg. One kilo is the largest listed fragrance pack — above that, pricing, GST invoicing and documentation are handled on WhatsApp.

Your own nose adapts within seconds and you already know which jar is which — both of those quietly invalidate a solo test. Three people scoring independently will disagree, and the disagreement is the data: a scent that two out of three rate highly at day 14 is a real result.

Run one boxed jar as a controlTake one jar of the winning combination, box it with tissue as you would ship it, and leave it sealed until day 21. Open it in front of your panel exactly as a customer would. This is the only version of the test that measures the thing the question actually asks about — cold throw at the moment of unboxing, not cold throw on your workbench.

Then burn them, because cold throw is half a candleA jar that smells superb unlit and tunnels once lit is not a product. Burn all eight to check the melt pool and the hot throw with the wick you chose, and remember that the oil and the load both change the burn — so a 10% jar is a different burn from an 8% jar even in the same wax. Cold throw is not bought by the gram. It is bought by the fortnight.
The oil pages tell you the cure window because that is the honest lever. Ten extra days cost nothing, apply to every batch forever, and are recommended by the supplier of the oil. Two extra percentage points of load cost ₹15.32 a candle, take you to the top of a stated ceiling, and leave you nowhere to go next time a customer says it could be stronger.
The candle a customer opens on day twenty-one is a different product from the one you smelled on day one. Only one of them is the one you are selling.

What is cold throw in a candle?
The scent a candle gives off unlit — fragrance evaporating from the surface of solid wax into the air above it. It is what a customer meets when a box or a lid is opened, and it is governed by how much oil is in the wax, how well the wax holds and releases it, how long the candle has cured, and how enclosed the air around it is. No CSI page rates cold throw, so it is measured by your own blind panel, not read off a listing.
Which wax gives the best cold throw?
Judged only on what is published: Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 at ₹650/kg states "excellent hot and cold throw" and Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at ₹507.40/kg states "strong scent throw (both cold and hot)". No other CSI container wax mentions cold throw. Those are the manufacturer's descriptions, not measurements — start with one of the two and let your panel decide between them.
Does more fragrance oil mean stronger cold throw?
Up to the lower of the two stated ceilings, more oil can help. Beyond it, it cannot: the surplus does not dissolve, it migrates to the surface, and a sweating candle reads as wrong rather than strong. Woody Oud states 6–10% for soy while CSI 468 states up to 13% — so 10% governs. Lifting 8% to 10% in a 200 g candle adds 3.38 g and ₹15.32. Cure first; it is free.
How long should I cure a candle before judging cold throw?
At minimum, the window the oil's page states — 48 to 72 hours on most CSI oils in soy, and 72 to 96 hours on Royal Oud, whose page says to cure that long "before assessing cold throw". For a candle you intend to sell, use the standard practice of 14 to 21 days for soy containers. Vetiver's page warns that its fragrance layer "builds slowly", which is a useful reminder that day-three is a checkpoint, not a verdict.
Does the jar lid affect cold throw?
It affects what the customer experiences, which is the same thing commercially. Cold throw is a concentration of fragrance in enclosed air, so a lid holds it and an open jar disperses it. The 150 gram apothecary jars at ₹94.40 describe their metal lid as a snug fit that protects the scent; the matte glass jars at ₹70.80 mention no lid, so a ₹22.42 box has to do that work instead.
Will the cold throw fade while the candle sits in stock?
Nobody publishes an answer, and we are not going to invent one. Zero CSI fragrance-oil pages state a shelf life, an expiry date or a storage instruction, so any figure you see quoted for fragrance fade is somebody's estimate. The CSI 468 and CSI 464 wax pages do state a 60-month shelf life in cool, dry storage. Practically: lids on, boxed, out of sunlight and heat, and rotate your stock oldest-first.
