Share the oils and the brand story; formulate wax, load, wick, colour and QC separately for jars, tealights and melts, and let a scent skip a format if it must.
9 sheets
three scents × three formats: one specification sheet each
Quick answers — read this first
What can be shared across jar candles, tealights and wax melts? The fragrance oils, the scent names and the brand palette. Wax choice, fragrance load, wick, colour method and quality checks need to be set and approved separately for each format.

Can I use mica in my wax melts but not my candles? Yes, and you should. Mica suits melts and decorative surfaces but can clog a burning wick, so keep it out of jars and tealights.

Does every scent need to be in every format? No. If an oil's stated range starts too high for a tealight's small wick, drop it from the tealight line rather than ship a tealight that drowns.

What does a three-format launch cost for one scent? In the worked example, Juicy Orange needs 1,293 g of oil for 40 jars, 200 tealights and 60 melt packs, which is ₹11,248.00 in oil alone.
The short answer
Shared layer: Oils, names and palette are shared; formulation is per format.
Colour split: Liquid dye or chips for jars, usually none for tealights, mica allowed in melts.
Oil fit: Juicy Orange's stated 8–10% equals 7.41–9.09% of total weight, a demanding floor for tealights.
Juicy Orange needed per format for one launch40 jars at 9%720 g200 tealights at 7.5%195 g60 melt packs at 9%378 g
The forty jars use more oil than the two hundred tealights and sixty melt packs combined.
Straight answer
I Want One Fragrance Collection Across Jar Candles, Tealights and Wax Melts — What Needs to Be Formulated Separately for Each Product Type?
Share the fragrance oils, scent names and palette; formulate everything else per product type. Jar candles need a container wax, a load set by what the wick tolerates and a wick tested per oil. Tealights need a modest load and the smallest wick that reaches the base. Wax melts need a wax that releases cleanly, a load capped by the oil page, no wick, and they can take mica. Fill weights for tealights and clamshells must be weighed. Some oils will not suit every format: Juicy Orange's stated range starts at 7.41% of total weight, which a tealight may not handle.
One line: a collection shares its oils, but each product type needs its own wax, load, wick, colour and test sheet.
Juicy Orange states soy 8–10% and a low discolouration risk on its page, so it suits pale melts, but its high range floor needs testing in tealights.

What the collection shares, and what it cannot

A collection is shared at the level of the scent names; underneath, each product type is a separate formulation that happens to use the same bottles.

When a brand launches one fragrance collection across jar candles, tealights and wax melts, the customer sees a single story: the same names, the same mood, the same look on the shelf. What you share behind the scenes is narrower than it looks. The fragrance oils are shared. The brand palette can be shared. Very little else carries across unchanged.

The reason is that the three products work in different ways. A jar candle melts a wide pool around a wick for hours. A tealight melts a tiny pool in a thin aluminium cup, briefly. A wax melt has no wick at all and is warmed from below. Each mechanism puts different demands on wax, oil load, colour and testing, so each needs its own sheet in your specification file.

This page lists what to formulate separately, then costs a three-scent launch across all three formats with CSI materials, so you can see where the quantities and the money actually go.

The formulation matrix: element by element

Formulate separately
Jar candle vs tealight vs wax melt
Element Jar candle Tealight Wax melt
Wax Container wax (e.g. CSI 464) Container wax, often the same as the jar Test for clean clamshell release (e.g. CSI 468 vs CSI 464)
Fragrance load Set by the wick's tolerance Kept modest for a tiny pool Set by wax retention, capped by the oil page
Wick Tested per oil in your jar Smallest that survives to the base None
Colour Liquid dye or chips, tested last Usually left undyed Mica allowed (melts and surfaces)
Fill weight Jar listing or weighed Weigh your own; not published Weigh your own; not published
Key QC check Full burn: pool, flame, soot Burn to the base Release, surface oil, scent strength when warmed
Oils in range Most of the collection Only oils that work at low load Most oils, inside their stated ranges

Two rows deserve emphasis. Colour is genuinely different: mica is fine in a wax melt, where it adds shimmer, but it does not belong inside a burning candle, where it can clog the wick. So a shimmering melt and a plain candle in the same scent is a normal, sensible result, not an inconsistency.

The last row matters even more. Not every oil in a collection has to appear in every format. Some oils have a stated range whose lower end is already a demanding load for a tealight, and some are so delicate that a tiny pool cannot carry them. Dropping one scent from the tealight line is better than shipping a tealight that drowns.

Choosing which oils go into which format

Take a three-scent collection built from CSI oils: Juicy Orange, Eucalyptus Spearmint and Dark Vanilla Oud. It covers a bright citrus, a fresh herbal and a warm gourmand-wood, which suits a collection meant to sell across moods.

Juicy Orange is the interesting case. Its page states soy 8–10% on the wax-weight basis, which is 8 ÷ 108 = 7.41% to 10 ÷ 110 = 9.09% of total weight. Its floor is therefore higher than the modest load many makers like in tealights. A suggested starting point for its tealight is 7.5% of total weight; in a weighed 13 g cup that is 0.975 g of oil in 12.025 g of wax, or 0.975 ÷ 12.025 = 8.11% of wax weight, just inside the page's range. If the tealight wick cannot cope at that load, Juicy Orange may simply not belong in the tealight line.

Eucalyptus Spearmint lists up to 10% in soy, a 199°C flashpoint and 0% vanillin, which makes it flexible across all three formats. Dark Vanilla Oud lists a 6–10% load with a vanilla and cardamom top; its vanillin percentage is not published, so run a colour check in each format, because a slight warming of tone is far more visible in a pale melt than in a coloured jar.

Low flashpoints need care in every format
If you add an oil with a low published flashpoint to the collection later, such as Gardenia at 98°C or Neroli at 85°C, add it below that figure in every format, including melts, and never at the melter's maximum setting.

Costing a launch across all three formats

Suppose the launch per scent is 40 jars, 200 tealights and 60 wax-melt packs (your figures). Fill weights: the 200 ml matte jar at 200 g; tealights at a weighed 13 g; clamshells at a weighed 70 g (weigh your own). Juicy Orange loads, as suggested starting points: jar 9%, tealight 7.5%, melt 9%.

1
Oil for Juicy Orange. Jars 40 × 18 g = 720 g; tealights 200 × 0.975 g = 195 g; melts 60 × 6.3 g = 378 g. Total 1,293 g, so a 1 kg and a 500 g pack: ₹7,499.00 + ₹3,749.00 = ₹11,248.00, with 207 g spare.
2
Container wax. Jars 40 × 182 g = 7,280 g plus tealights 200 × 12.025 g = 2,405 g gives 9,685 g, inside one 10 kg pack of CSI 464 at ₹5,074.00.
3
Melt wax. 60 × 63.7 g = 3,822 g. If CSI 468 wins your release test, one 5 kg pack at ₹3,185.00 covers it.
4
Vessels. Jars 4 × 10-pack = 4 × ₹708.00 = ₹2,832.00; tealight cups 2 × 100 = 2 × ₹649.00 = ₹1,298.00; clamshells 50 + 10 = ₹1,475.00 + ₹295.00 = ₹1,770.00.
5
Repeat per scent. Do the oil step separately for Eucalyptus Spearmint and Dark Vanilla Oud with their own approved loads; the wax and vessel steps scale with your total unit count.
Material cost per unit
Juicy Orange at ₹7.499 per g (₹7,499.00 ÷ 1,000 g), excluding packaging
Format Wax Oil Vessel Wick Total
200 g jar at 9% 182 g × ₹0.5074 = ₹92.35 18 g = ₹134.98 ₹708.00 ÷ 10 = ₹70.80 ₹9.44 (if C2 is approved) ₹307.57
13 g tealight at 7.5% 12.025 g × ₹0.5074 = ₹6.10 0.975 g = ₹7.31 ₹649.00 ÷ 100 = ₹6.49 ₹5.90 (if C1 is approved) ₹25.80
70 g melt pack at 9% 63.7 g × ₹0.637 = ₹40.58 6.3 g = ₹47.24 ₹29.50 none ₹117.32

The wick figures are illustrations; your burn tests decide which Eco size each format uses, and CSI lists no dedicated tealight wick. The clamshell price is ₹1,475.00 ÷ 50 = ₹29.50 each; wax is priced at ₹0.5074 per g for CSI 464 (₹5,074.00 ÷ 10,000 g) and ₹0.637 per g for CSI 468 (₹3,185.00 ÷ 5,000 g). Packaging, labels, labour, shipping and GST are your own figures on top.

Buy this to test, then buy this once validated

Test-first, per scent: the 50 g oil pack (Juicy Orange ₹379.00, Eucalyptus Spearmint ₹212.40, Dark Vanilla Oud ₹320.00), plus shared items: CSI 464 1 kg (₹507.40), CSI 468 500 g (₹325.00), a 5-pack of matte jars (₹354.00), 10 tealight cups (₹94.40), 10 clamshells (₹295.00), Eco C1 20 (₹118.00) and Eco C2 10 (₹94.40). That is ₹379.00 + ₹212.40 + ₹320.00 + ₹507.40 + ₹325.00 + ₹354.00 + ₹94.40 + ₹295.00 + ₹118.00 + ₹94.40 = ₹2,699.60.

Sequence the production run with the formats in mind. Pour the jars first, since they need the longest cure before you can confirm them; melts and tealights set and cure quickly by comparison and can follow. Keep the melt wax and the container wax in clearly separate, labelled containers once you are working with two waxes, because a mix-up between them is invisible until a melt sticks in its clamshell or a jar pulls away from the glass. Clean the pitcher between scents so a trace of Dark Vanilla Oud does not travel into an Eucalyptus Spearmint batch.

Run each scent through each format, approve or drop it format by format, and only then place the launch order above. Your specification file should end with nine sheets, three scents by three formats, or fewer if a scent did not earn its place in one of them. That file, not the collection name, is what keeps the products consistent as you grow.

Argue against interest
Leave a scent out of a format rather than force it in.
A collection with one fewer tealight is better than a tealight that drowns. Customers forgive a missing option far more readily than a failed candle.
One collection name, nine specification sheets.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general candle-making practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly where CSI publishes no figure (wick sizes, burn times, hardness), and labels every wick, load, test count or margin as a starting point for your own validation.

Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as a wick size for your jar, a mould's cycle life or a wax's survival temperature — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Frequently asked questions

can i use the same wax for candles and wax melts
Sometimes, but test it. Container wax suits jars and tealights; melts need clean release from clamshells and good fragrance retention. Compare CSI 464 with CSI 468 in your own clamshell before deciding.
do wax melts need a different fragrance load from candles
Usually a separately approved one. Melts have no wick, so the limit is how well the wax holds oil, capped by the oil page's stated range. Test them alongside the jar load, not instead of it.
should tealights have the same scent strength as jar candles
They cannot quite match a jar's wide pool. Keep the load modest so the small wick survives, and accept a gentler throw. Some oils with high range floors may not suit tealights at all.
can i put mica in candles and wax melts
Use mica in wax melts and on decorative surfaces only. Inside a burning jar or tealight it can clog the wick. A shimmering melt beside a plain candle in the same scent is normal.
how much fragrance oil for a candle collection launch
Calculate per scent and per format. In the example, Juicy Orange for 40 jars, 200 tealights and 60 melt packs needs 1,293 g, so a 1 kg and a 500 g pack.
how many specification sheets does a candle collection need
One per scent per format. Three scents in jars, tealights and melts means nine sheets, each with wax, fill, load, wick or none, colour and the QC result that approved it.
